Laser cutting.

Hello (excuse my English really bad I'm Belgian and French) I would like to cut aluminum sheet of + - 5 mm thick and also cut paper without "burning the edges" I would like to know what kind of "laser head" the cheapest possible exists and what would be even better, whether this kind of "laser head" is recovering ... I was thinking of a DVD laser burner but, even though I I'm as good at DIY as an elephant is good at skydiving, I guess a DVD burner will not cut aluminum ... A big thank-you

Laser Cutting Fabric

I study product design and I'm designing a home craft laser cutter machine, I was hoping anyone who has experimented with laser cutting fabric/ clothing/accessories could share what tips they found made the process easier or the problems that occurred whilst doing this. I would appreciate if you could help me with a few questions  I have :) What did you use to keep the fabric straight whilst laser cutting? What would be the best material to put in between the fabric to prevent cutting through for example both sides of a t shirt, plastic sheet or cardboard or.. ? Would you find it beneficial if you could have a small machine to cut out smaller sized fabric to attach for dresses, tops etc of for accessories? If there is any aspect of the process that you think would benefit from being made simpler what would it be? Thank you for your time Any feedback would be much appreciated Kelly-Ann Moore Staffordshire University Student

I'm looking for help getting some new smaller drafting tools cut. The cut area is no bigger then 9"x6", I was hoping to get the part cut out of .04" clear Lexan, I can supply if needed. I'd also like to have the parts etched as well if that is possible as well. I have the rough drawing done in AutoCAD so far.

Laser cutting projects?

Woah!! I just found a laser cutting workshop near my home! Give me some links of projects which "You Like The Most"! Is there any portal for laser cutting ideas, projects and ready plans and tutorials? *** UPDATE: I have made some 3D models in 'Autodesk 123D'. But I how can I convert the surfaces to 2D, so that I can use them in laser cutter. I am unable to figure it out. Please Help! *** UPDATE: 123D has now a very cool feature for all Laser-Philic folks! Now we can add 2D sheets in 123D for laser cutting. btw, I am now well aquainted with Google Sketchup and using it for all of my laser cutting work. Laser Cutting Machines

I recently installed a Chanxan CW 1610T Laser Cutting Machine with two 95W CO2 laser tubes. Everything works including the cooling system, pumping system and the fan. I turned on the machine and turned on the two lasers. The thing is when I press the Pulse button on the control panel, none of the laser tubes fires. I want to adjust the optical path and I cant do that if the Pulse button has no response. When the machine is ON, the ammeters show a 0 reading and there is no deflection. I thought it was a Laser power problem so I removed the data cables on the laser power box and when I press the test button on the box, the lasers fire beams. So help me out and suggest if its a setting I have missed or something else cause the machine is preventing production to start.

Principles of Laser cutting

I have being repairing all forms of cutting & welding machines for some years. In my experience for example Plasma cutters work on a principle of momentous arc. This is formed by a High frequency arc it only gives you 30 milliseconds to start your current flow. Air is required to force this arc out of the plasma cutting head. Ok got your attention now getting back to a laser cutter it also uses air to force out cutting light to cut or engrave. so looking for more under standing to work on a problem.

Laser Cutting in the Classroom

After creating a makerspace at my elementary school, I was always on the lookout for fresh projects and new tools and a laser cutter was that one big item at the top of my wishlist that I just never got... but, I know some teachers and librarians who are brand new to the world of laser cutting and would love pointers from other teachers who have already worked through some of the challenges of starting something new. :) So, if you have a laser cutter in your classroom or school makerspace, please share any tips or suggestions you might have for any teachers who are just starting out with one at their school. Also, feel free to share any cool projects you and your students have done or programs you use.

Laser Cutting Digitally Printed Images?

Is it possible to laser cut full color, digitally printed images from fabric? For example, a full color image of a butterfly? Say, if I printed a series of butterflies onto white fabric and then want to have each butterfly laser cut individually from the fabric, is that possible? Can the laser be set up to cut on the outline of the butterfly and leave the colors in tact? Or is my only option to do digital printing after laser cutting the basic shape? Finally, is there anyone willing to help with a prototype that would use the described technique?

Full Spectrum Lasers

Hey Everyone, Recently I have been looking at different C02 laser manufacturers to see if there was anything that was affordable but still of professional quality, and I stumbled accross Full Spectrum Lasers.  I am wondering if anyone on the site has any experience with their products and their customer service. The reason I am asking is because their prices almost seem too low; comparable Epilog lasers seem to cost at least twice as much.  I know that Epilog is probably one of the biggest names in the industry and have apparently been around the longest, but I don't see how that alone could cause such a price difference. So basically, if any of you have had good or bad experiences with Full Spectrum your knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Nathanael Scheffler

Is neoprene suitable for laser-cutting? Answered

The manual of my school's new laser-cutter specifically bans the cutting of PVC, because the chlorine-based fumes generated would damage the mirrors and lenses. Since neoprene (polymchloroprene) also contains chlorine, would I have the same problems as with PVC?

Laser cut sheet metal

I just got a couple designs back form the laser cutters. This is 12 gage sheet metal cut with a 2400 watt laser. Pretty cool right? It’s amazing the kind of edge it can leave behind. Just wanted to share with everyone. This is part of my ambition for putting together project kits, which help you create items from metal. Soon I’ll have a kickstarter campaign going to help launch 13 kits. These particular designs are based off of the salamander pendant and Excalibur letter opener.

Diode laser cutting capabilities??

Hey guys, Im starting to build a 2 axis CNC for a laser. I was going to try the DVD burner laser and just cut through some paper for now but im wondering what the capabilities of the higher wattage lasers are. I know there are several 1-2+ watt lasers on ebay, what could they mange to cut through? Could I cleanly cut cardboard? What about vinyl for making stuff like decals and stickers? Im wondering if spending the extra money on a better laser would be beneficial or not so if anyone has some good comparisons or ideas let me know. Im on a tight budget for this build so a co2 laser is WAY out of the question. This is my first CNC build so its mainly to learn but the more capabilities of the CNC the better.

Need a 30 watt "LASER"

Looking for an inexpensive laser cutting/engraving system. I will be taking it apart and  customizing it to fit onto another machine.  Currently, we have a rotating blade to cut sheets of material, but this set-up causes many issues.  A contact free solution would be best.  So I want to mount the laser carriage above the cutting area; the rest of the laser parts will be contained in a metal cabinet under the machine.  The laser would need to be able to travel 12-16 inches in 1-2 seconds and cut through 1-5 mil paper/poly material. I have a fair amount of experience with lasers, I have know how to sight them in and understand the technology.  We currently have 45, 100 and 400 watt galvo head lasers, as well as a 90 watt XY laser set-up. So, what website would you direct me to, to purchase an inexpensive laser system?

Will a Laser Cutter cut Phenolic?

My dad's engineering company just "bought" a $20,000 engraver to engrave phenolic tags. (They cost $8 a piece normally, but the raw materials is only $0.25 a tag). The reason I say "bought" is because they have it, but theres been problems with it so they haven't paid for it yet, and can return it. The engraver takes 15 minutes to do 15 tags, and requires constant monitoring to make sure that the vacuum that sucks up the shavings doesn't suck the tag up itself. I thought a laser cutter would be much, much simpler. (And after engraving about 200 of these, in batches of 5, I know it would be) The major block is weather or not it can cut the phenolic tags, and if theres some way to create the layout from an excel spreadsheet.(IE importing an excel spreadsheet, and it creates a template with the vars in the spreadsheet) The latter is not as great an issue, as I can probably do some programming myself to fix it. Thanks!

?Anybody Want To Recommend or Do Right Up on Buying a Laser Cutter?

I want to buy one but feel overwhelmed in the vast amount of choice and price variation from Chinese ebay specials that cost less than $1000 all the way up to $15,000.  I can afford the ebay price range but bet the trouble in usage might make it worthless.  I have a very cheap vinyl cutter from ebay but doubt that good experiance will be replicated.   Also since I only have a mac are there any issues that might arise from this fact?

Laser cutting a spring - choice of material? Answered

I have a scheme that requires a flat, non-conducting spring. Acrylic it too brittle for my needs, but I know that some plastics can, when cut with a laser, give off fumes and gases that will damage the laser cutter (eg PVC gives off gases that will cloud the mirrors). What materials would you recommend? (I've attached a quick sketch of the general shape of the planned spring.) EDIT: I've added a rough sketch of the project - a torch, cut from acrylic. The four projections are to bind it together with an elastic band.  The switch operates like a syringe.

Advice on how to go from 3D model to laser cutting vector file?

Hello,   I've been getting my feet wet in 3D modeling to try to build board game inserts. These are generally a series of boxes and trays that fit together to hold components and fill the space of the box properly. I have access to a 3D printer, but I can't figure out how to go from my model (in tinkercad or sketchup, generally) to the 2D vector files of the components I need for Corel to print them on the laser cutter. I suspect the process is more than someone could explain to me in the confines of this forum, but if someone in the know could give me a push in the right direction to find the resources I need, even that would be great! I've done a lot of research trying to figure this out, and all I have come up with are some Sketchup plugins that no longer seem to work, or websites that will lonely let me build one box at a time with no extra features (like scallops for card draws). Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer. Todd

How to make files for laser cutting?

I have some psd files of some animals I'd like to make some acrylic lasercut figures out of. One layer for just the outline, and another layer for engraving details. I have no idea what files a lasercutter needs to be able to make these. I brought my psd files to one of the workshops where I work, but was told to email my files to this guy who could make them into vector. Unfortunately he only did one of the files (out of five), so I figured I might be able to just figure out how to make the rest myself, but I'm really confused how this works. He sent me two files, a pdf and a ai. I really only know Photoshop, and my experience with Illustrator is very limited (next to none). And I know nothing about pdf's. Is there any easy way to make whatever files a lasercutter needs, for a simple shape and a few engravings?

How to laser cut 90 degree interlocking gears? Answered

I am working on a project that involves laser cutting wooden gears, and I would like some of these gears to be at 90 degrees to each other. Ideally, a beveled gear would be the best for this, but I doubt I could make one with a laser (I could possibly modify this method, or make one with interlocking parts but...) So to do that do I need to make a special type of gear, or could I just use this and mount them at 90 degrees?

making a very powerful sun beam

Hi there,  I  have a question and perhaps you could be of help to me, So my question is ,  is it possible to use cheap Mylar blankets(parabolic form) to concentrate the sun light, so as it would be able to cut through metal. My idea is to use 3 Mylar sheets each  1m square  which will reflect the light towards another  one which will work as a collector and then further concentrate the light to about half a millimeter.  Doing the math (0.5mm²/3m²) is more than 16 million (ok there  will be a lot of loss , lets say 50 percent). The question is, is this worth trying cause i don't want to waste time and money on this. So if someone knows why this wont work , it would be very helpful. thanks in advance
