The Last Question

Well, upon my wonderings today i came across this, a short story by Isaac Asimov. The Last QuestionFor a short story, (about 20min - 1 hour read) i found it was pretty good. Most of us are familiar with Isaac Asimov for his three robotic laws. For any sci-fi fan, this is a must read. Im now looking into some more of his writings.

Last Meal

I'm a television junkie and I recently watched an episode of King of the Hill in which Dale, Bill, Boomhauer and Khan get together to make what would be their last meal, if they knew they were going to be executed the next day.  I was thinking about this....what would my last meal be? A Japanese bento with tonkatsu, teriyaki chicken, tempura veg, various sushi, Grandma's green chile, and her black mole (mo-lay) and my Mom's rice......and some Ghiradelli dark chocolate. What would your last meal be? I think I want to get some friends together and do my own "Last Meal Party."....In time for Halloween.

Last Day at Instructables

It's my last day here at the Instructables office. It's been a wonderful summer, and I'm glad to have worked with everyone here: at the office, and the people I've interacted with on the site. Curious about my impact this summer, I did a bit of statistical analysis on the last three months, and I wanted to share it with you. It's not completely precise, but it gives a good ballpark. Ironically, though I have done laser cutting, 3D printing on both the UP printer and the Objet, CNC embroidery, and even CNC papercutting, I never bothered to install the office printer. So I had to show my graphs from a laptop screen. Here are my stats, as of August 17th: I published 69 Instructables total this summer in about 89 days, (65 official work days). (I have a lifetime total of 88 from some previous Instructables.) Here's a graph of the Instructables building up over time. (Blue is data; the thin black line is a fitted trend.) It's pretty linear (with a slight dip at the end of July, when I went camping and couldn't post). The averaged rate is about 75% of an Instructable every day this summer, or just over one per day if you only count work days. 63% of my summer’s Instructables were featured. I had a quick learning curve; after the end of May, 75% were featured. It was a little more difficult to extract further data, so the remainder of my statistics refer only to Instructables I published while working here this summer which received over 1,000 total pageviews. Overall, these Instructables generated 294,224 pageviews (almost three hundred thousand!), 89% of which were from unique viewers. People spent a total of 14 hours, 11 minutes, and 28 seconds viewing these Instructables. To the left, you can see my summer pageviews accumulate, and to the right, the day-by-day graph of my pageviews. The peaks on the right graph represent, in order, my Infinity Dress, the Clockwork Beetle, and the Plaster Face Cast. (Since I made these charts last Friday, it doesn't take into account my Temari, which whould have created a spike as big as that of the Infinity Dress over the weekend.) Although those are my top-viewed Instructables from the summer, my favorites are actually these ones: (and working on Psycho Scooter Scramble, of course) I'm glad to have such a measurable effect on the site and the Instructables community. The people of the site and in the office have made a strong impact on me as well. This is the first place where I feel a true sense of community among a group of people I know exclusively through the internet, and I want to thank all of you who I've never met in person for being my friends. In the office, I'll thank you personally. It's been a great summer, thanks to you. I'll still be around the site from time to time, but I can't devote every day to it. I'm finishing up my Neuroengineering degree at Olin and working on a few other things besides. But I'll be around, and I hope to talk to all of you from time to time. See you around, and happy making! -SelkeyMoonbeam

Last Weekend for Launch It! Challenge!

OK, everyone, this is the last weekend to enter the Launch It! Challenge. Remember that three people will be getting an engraved Leatherman. One for the highest rating, one for the most pageviews, and one will be chosen at random. Considering the number of eligible entries in the contest right now, the odds of winning randomly are 1 in 30. Not too shabby! Also, five runners-up for ratings will be receiving a t-shirt. A t-shirt with a robot on it!So make something fly and make a cool instructable and video about it. Just make sure to post it before 11:59 pm PDT on Sunday. After the entries are in there will be four days to get ratings and pageviews before the contest is truly over.

Is this the last step in an unstoppable robot?

I just saw this video via Laughing Squid's Twitter feed. It's a small robot from Boston Dynamics (the people that brought you the Mule walking pack-robot) that can jump 30 feet straight up. Now, imagine if they combined that leaping technology, and the ruggedness to survive the landings, with the terrain-crossing a flight capabilities of a Mini-Wheg MMALV, and you've got a robot that can get anywhere - as soon as the terrain gets too rough to clamber over, jump 30 feet straight up, and then either glide or fly under power to a better location! Come on, roboteers, get to it!

I Saw KITEMAN last week.....

During my vacation last week, the wife and I were out at a local restaurant that had a little "tourist trap shop" in it, and we stopped in to look around. Man was I surprised to see that Kiteman had been modeling for a stuffed doll they were selling. As soon as I saw it, I just knew I had to "get a picture of it" (it was nearly $50, so buying it was out of the question). I only had my phone with me, so no High def pictures, but I was able to capture him, one half at a time, in two photos I have attached. . . For those NOT familiar with Kiteman, I have linked to a Guide To Kiteman.

Did I Sleep Last Night?

Yet another benefit of getting an adequate amount of sleep: a more accurate memory. According to researchers in Europe, a lack of sleep increases the likelihood of forming false memories. However, there are two ways of avoiding this: test subjects who caught up on their sleep debt had a similar level of false memories as those who had not been sleep deprived at all. Or, you can try the classic morning method: drink coffee. They took two more groups of volunteers, deprived them of sleep, and then gave them either caffeine or a placebo in the morning, one hour before their memories were tested. The group given caffeine had 10% fewer false memories than those who did not receive any, an effect McCabe describes as "quite striking."Despite their recent closures, Starbucks must be very excited to hear this news.Take a look at the full sleep/memory article from naturenews. How much sleep are you getting each night?

Substantial lag in "last post by" for the four Help fora?

I've noticed that there seems to be a substantial lag in posting times propagating out from the four Help fora (Authors, Bugs, FAQs, and Feedback) to the top-level Forum summary page. For example, I recently posted two replies to bug reports, at 1:22 and 1:23 pm, 22 Dec 2008. Within the Bugs Forum my two comments are appropriately referenced as "last post by kelseymh 10 minutes ago", and the two topics are first and second in the list. However, on the top-level page, the Bugs Forum still shows that the last post was from Wingmaster700 more than 6 hours ago. I'll also note that other comments between 6 hours and now were also never reported at the top-level summary.

Not a bug, but a feature request

In the forum sections we can see who made the last comment and I find this info very helpful. In the Answers sections however we only see the number of replies given so far. A lot of us like to help out by providing more or less usefull answers and it would be great to see who provided the last. This way it is easy to see if the person asking for help actually came back and replied him/herself. As an alternative it would be almost as good to see a tick, point or "replied" info once the person asking replied again. Would of course also help during springclean to remove tons of questions that never got solved.... Not to mention user from the database ;)

How to make a long lasting battery pack for portable vaporizer that is small and long lasting?

What would the specs be to make a battery or buy a battery that would work for my portable vapir oxygen mini vaporizer? Can I just use any 12v battery pack or is it more complicated than that? The ac adapter says the output power is 12v----1.5A with a max output power of 18w. And I know the oxygen mini has an optional battery pack but it is expensive and doesn't last that long. The attached picture is of the ac adapter. Also how could I charge this pack?

"last post by" is substantially broken in forum summaries

Earlier today, RocketScientist2015 reported a bug with the forum topic lists, that "sticky" topics appeared to no longer be sticky. In addition, it seems that the "last post by " mechanism is broken. The attached three screenshots were taken within the past five minutes. You can see many "empty" fora, including the whole Marketplace (second). There appeared to be a server outage last night around midnight. Could this be fallout from that?

What was the last electronic device you broke?

In writing 62 Projects to Make with a Dead Computer I collected a lot of broken electronics to make projects with. However, the ones I had the most fun re-purposing were the ones I had broken myself. This is not say I enjoy breaking my electronics, but rather, I enjoyed finding new uses for the devices that I had grown rather fond of using. The last such thing I have that died on me was the digital camera I used to document all of the projects I made in the book (it survived over 20,000 photos before I dropped it for the last time). It's currently in pieces on my work bench while I try to figure out what to do with it. I'm wondering, what is the last thing you have that died? What do you plan on doing with it?

solar light last longer than flashlight

My husband was working on the fence, as it was getting dark i went to get the flashlight which if you have it on too long it will dimmer too soon, so i have this idea of using our only outdoor solar light which last 8 to 10hours and he could see very good with it.  I think it is a great idea for when the electricity goes out you can use the solar light in your home.

Technical pens how long do they last?

I have some old technical pens I think more the 20 years old. The kind that you refill and take apart when you need to clean them. I was wondering if any one knows if its time to throw them in the trash? They are Staedtler Mars Matic ink pens. They came in 3 classic standard sizes in a plastic case. I did know how to clean them nicely but haven't used them in a while. So when I did go to use them it made a mess. So I cleaned them again and it didn't improve anything.  I was wondering if the plastic distorts after awhile? So what do you think? Thank you for your answer.  :)
