Lawnmower on a Stick

Our Stuff on a Stick Contest is just for food, but if it was for any crazy item on a stick, Steve McGranahan's lawnmower on a stick would be a strong contender. It's ridiculous and dangerous and mesmerizing at the same time. Check it out. via Neatorama UPDATE: Just wanted to add this other video of Steve doing some "skeet shooting." Action starts around :45.

Painting a Lawnmower?

Hey guys, I have an older lawn mower that I want to paint the handlebars, wheel rims, and some plastic pieces blaze orange. It's a gift for my girlfriends little brother who's birthday is in a couple weeks. I was wondering what paint I should use for it? I don't have a lot of money to play with so that is definitely a factor. I have a home depot, lowes, value home, and sears near where I live. Thanks for any help!

Idea

I'd like to see someone make a lawnmower that doesn't use a large stupid spinning fan, I'd like to see someone make something that uses the same principle as a harvester and makes little convenient bales or little grass blocks that could be easily used for other things. Its 2012, for gods sake, we should have some cool shit by now, and make it robotic too, where you can walk around your yard with your smart phone to let the mower know the perimeter as well as any other points of interest, like flower beds or dogs.

Electric lawn mower starts up as soon as it is plugged in. Needs new start button? Answered

Hello everyone, I have a Kobalt electric lawnmower that initially stopped working after I cut grass that was too high. I searched this forum and found out what I needed to do - replace the rectifier.  I was very excited! I replaced it and now when I plug the mower in, it starts as soon as the wires are connecting. I do not need to push the button and lift the handle in order for it to start as one normally does. In other words, it seems the start button is now malfunctioning. I am thinking that all my attempts to start the mower when the rectifier was not functioning , and me tripping the circuit breaker, etc. somehow damaged the start button. However, I don't know. So, my question is is it bad for the mower to start right up like that? Also, does it sound like it could be the start box up by the top or is it possibly something else? I would appreciate any ideas someone has.

Lawnmower engine: What to do?

I just came into posession of a completely rusted through push lawnmower, & the engine supposedly works fine (I haven't tested it yet) I thought it would be boring to just make another lawnmower out of it. Electric Lawnmower tripping circuit-breaker, Motor still runs.

I know you folks must have seen this question many times, but I still have to ask: my electric lawnmower tripped the circuit breaker (I suspect due to excessively long grass), and kept tripping it after I reset the breaker. The weird thing about it is that each time I reset the breaker and restart the lawnmower, the motor would actually start and run for half a second, before the breaker trips again. I infer that means the motor itself is not shot, and possibly not the rectifier either? Can anyone help with this? Thanks in advance!?

What should I power with my solar panels when they're not charging my lawnmower? Answered

So I built a solar charging setup for my electric lawnmower. It involves a 24V, 60W panel setup and a charge controller. It works fine, but it only takes a few days at the most to charge the lawnmower, and the rest of the time it just sits there producing unused power. I'm trying to think of what to do with the power when I'm not charging the mower, but I haven't come up with anything good. Any suggestions?

How do I fix a Black & Decker electric lawn mower motor?

A neighbor asked me to have a look at her B&D electric mulching mower (MM1800 Type 1) after it stopped working. When I pulled the control switch, the blade didn't turn, but there was a buzzing sound and kind of a burned plastic smell. I also found that it was very hard to turn the blade by hand. At home, after a lot of trouble I was able to remove the 6 screws holding down the big plastic cover. (You should see how much grass was under there.) I can now see the outside of the motor, but how do I figure out which parts need to be replaced? The owner's manual has a parts list. I assume that some parts (like the magnet ring and armature) are OK, and that the problem is with something like the brush spring/terminal/brush insert or rectifier. How do I find out? (I'm hoping it won't be that hard to replace the parts of the motor.) Thx.

Need help with PWM to Analogue conversion

I have a Futaba RC transmitter and receiver, and an electric wheelchair. I want to be able to control the wheelchair via RC (a-la battlebots), and I do not want to control the joystick via servo. I also want to leave the wheelchair's joystick controls intact and either solder another RC device in tandem with the joystick, or hijack the control by having an external switch that switches from either manual joystick, or RC Freq. I have some experience in electronics, but only in the troubleshooting arena. I can fix things if they are broken and can troubleshoot to the board level, but have no experience building bots and have no RC experience. The solution needs to be low cost please. I can solder build boards from directions. I just have no "vision" of how to put these 2 systems together. I think the words "pwm to analog" have been thrown around online, but I need to know more. Please point me to websites, or send me instructions and Ideas. The wheelchair will not be a wheelchair forever. R2-D2, Wall-E, and an RC Lawnmower are all in contention. Thanks in advance.?

Modding a Lawnmower into a Shredder / Mulcher

Hello everyone. I have a simplelawnmower with a briggs 6HP motor. I want to use it to shred/grind aged horse manure compost in the easiest way possible. The mower has a side shoot, but it has a spring loaded trap door covering it right now. It also has a trap door for a back discharge bag, which is also closed and I don't have the bag, I have thought of 2 options for this myself. 1) Cut a hole in the sheet metal base of the mower beside the motor, on the left hand side if you were pushing the mower, so that I can shovel in the manure.. Cover the bottom of the mower under the blades with 1/4 - 1/2" hardware cloth. Elevate mower off the ground on cinder blocks over tarp. Hoping it would shoot the shredded mulch out the bottom, through the metal hardware cloth onto the tarp to be collected. Problems I foresee : If the regular discharge outlet on the right side of the mower blows grass out, will my hole i cut in the left side of the mower suck inward, or also blow out? Obviously this wouldn't work if the area I'm trying to shovel in is blasting air out. Would the shredded compost be blown downward? It's really the only place for it to go except the hole I would be shoveling in at. This is the simplest way I can think of. I would prefer to do something like this. Perhaps if it wouldnt work stock like this then I could maybe reverse the blade? I don't have a welder, btw. 2) Much cooler option but I dont really have the time, material, or know how would be to run a pulley to a seperate trash can with its own blade at the bottom and wire mesh under that. Any idears?

Electric mower

I want to convert my old gas mower to an electric mower. 12v batteries are easy enough, and there is plenty of info re solar charging systems. I'm stuck on sourcing the motor. I was wondering if a car starter motor would be sufficient for running a lawnmower? It's a 12v motor, has enough oomph to turn over up to 12 cylinders of american steel, and there are plenty of 'em out there in junkyards waiting to be recycled. Sounds good on paper. Anyone have any insight into why this is or ain't a good idea? Thx- Rev. Bucky

Making a knife out of a lawnmower mulching blade? Answered

I am planning to use a lawnmower mulching blade to make my first knife. I need to know how should I heat treat the blade. Since I am planning to do this outdoors, I thought about using motor oil for quenching. Would you please provide some ideas or suggestions? Thank you very much for all your help.

Push-mower blade removal

Heylo everybody! :) I have a self-propelled mower that I am disassembling for a go-kart (probably). I've gotten everything off of it except for the engine. I know where the bolts are to take if off of the mower deck, but here's the problem: the blade won't come off. I've blocked the blade in both directions and tried to loosen the middle bolt by turning both left and right, but the mower is pretty old and the shaft and bolt are probably rusted to craps. I also attempted shearing off the bolt with a crowbar and hammer, as well as cutting the head of the bolt off with a Sawzall. The bolt dulled all the teeth on the metal blade for the Sawzall and dented the crowbar's edges. So does anybody have any suggestions? I'm really at a loss on this one. I don't have access to a grinder or plasma cutter, which would seriously help out a lot. I was thinking about picking up a cold chisel from the store, but if I'm just being an idiot and turning in the wrong direction or something obvious, I'd rather know that than lop off a bolt and lose some of the hackability of the engine. Thanks!   - basementhacker

My lawnmower left me saying "WTF" this morning...

Well, here's the deal.. Last night I took the mower deck off my rider, sharpened the blades, re-attached them, made sure it ran fine, which it did, worked like it has been for the past 3 months, parked it in the tarp shed and went inside. Well this is what really really made me snap. I was happy with it because I just fixed the tire and thought "Thank fuckin god it's back and working again" as it had sat up on cinder blocks for the past 2 weeks due to flat tires. Morning comes, beautiful day out, grass to mow. I go to start it, takes a few times (I thought it was odd, but didn't think much of it) and get it started. Well some past history first, this machine was fixed at a mennonite repair shop a year ago or so because apparently there was a peice of dirt stuck in the hole that a supposed pin drops into when the machine shuts off to stop the gas flow from going into the engine when it's off. They put a valve on the gas line aswell, well after that, it never went down all the way on the throttle or it would just stall. Well this morning, it seemed to be completely the opposite, it idled fine at the lowest throttle setting (I had a really confused look at the time) and at full open, it ran horrible and the whole frame was shaking because it was going up and down (the reving I mean). I tried to cut grass with it, and it goes for about 5 meters and then nearly stalls (still hasn't for some reason, but just barely) and then starts running again and spews out a shitload of smoke for a few seconds. I tried to "run" it off and it didn't even drained the gas and put new gas in, that was a wasted $10 trip to the gas station. As of now, it's sitting out in my yard, I don't want to touch it because it's pissed me off enough. Also, I took the air filter off and it seems that at one point it was spewing gas up out of the air inlet. Can someone please help me?!? I need this machine running as I cut grass for people. I vowed to myself I would permantly park this thing if one more thing broke, but it's getting it's last chance.** Forgot to add, it's a 12hp brigs and straton (type H I think?), and manufactured by murry (I know..sad).Second update:Uhhh...it appears to be fine?? It ran ok today, a bit touchy, but it seems ok, can someone care to explain how the hell this happened????!?, scrap that, it's fuxxored again. Arg, I need it for my lawn cutting needs!

Briggs & Stratton Lawnmower/Go Cart Engine to Power a Boat

I've heard of people mounting small (5 hp or so) Briggs engines in boats to power them. I have a couple of warn out 2-stroke outboards, but they are smelly, smoky, and unreliable. Does anyone know the best way to mount a Briggs (or Tecumseh, Robin, etc) as an inboard? I know there'd have to be shafts and seals, but I'm kind of looking for ideas before I start cutting on the old flatbottom. I have a couple of vertical shaft motors, and one good horizontal.

Cheap but powerful option for a go-cart motor? Answered

I'm pretty keen to build a motorized go-cart with my friend, but we both have run out of chores to do for money, too young to get a job and are on a pretty low budget. We've already got a go-cart that doesn't have a motor, but is well-built (welded frame) and has a proper steering mechanism (not just rope attached to the front axle). Two questions: Would it be easier to make an entirely new go-cart or to adapt the go cart we've got now to suit the engine we get? And What's a cheap option for a motor that has some torque and can go around 40-50km/h? I'm talking cheap like under $100NZ (around 70$US I think?) EDIT: PLEASE DON'T SAY BUY A LAWNMOWER ENGINE UNLESS YOU CAN GIVE ME A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF HOW TO USE A LAWNMOWER ENGINE ON A GO-CART - Lawnmower engines have vertical driveshafts, and you can't just tip them sideways. A V-belt is not ideal.

I'm going to build a Quadcycle from PVC pipe.  The plans are from American Speedster in Tallahassee, FL  The drive mechanism is from an old bicycle.   While researching my accessory options, I read about an electric conversion, built  from  an old B&d; lawn mower?   I don't have a cord long enough to continue the use of this  motor in it's AC configuration. ;=] Therefore, my quandary.  What is the procedure and what parts will I need to convert this motor to DC?  Also, I would like to know the difference in the wiring between different voltage ratings.
