Studding leather

Hey guys, Okay so I came across a bunch of spiked studs which I throught were screw on, but it turns out they're not. The backs look like they should be able to hammer into the stud... but Im not sure of how. I've tried as many ways as I could think of to hammer them in but the stud always slips sideways preventing the back from going in .... Anybody have any ideas?

Staining leather with acetone?

I want to put a motif on my old black leather wallet I'm too lazy to go full screenprinting on it, and by the state of the wallet, it isn't really worth it either I've read something about acetone making stains on dyed leather, and thought of just using acetone to "paint" my design on the wallet The design is simple, so I'm thinking of just making a stencil. My only concern is: How do I make sure that the acetone doesn't "leak" beyond the borders of the stencil when painting? Will normal duct tape do?

Waterproofing a leather hat?

My day-to-day hat is a leather fedora. Most of the time, it's great, but it does leak through the crown if I'm out in heavy rain for more than, say, 30-45 minutes. This isn't normally a huge problem, since I'm not often out in heavy rain that long that often, but it is a problem on a wet camp, when I'm outdoors all day. Unfortunately, I can't polish it, as the finish is matt, borderline suede. Any ideas, folks?

looking for leather embelishments?

I am making cuff bracelets, where you wrap the leather or suede around the raw brass cuff.  however, before wrapping the leather, i sew on embelishments.  I have been unsuccessful in finding such large embelishments.  Conchos won't work because the metal on the bottom won't stick to the brass cuff.  any suggestions for website to check out?  i have been hitting dead ends for over a month.

High Quality Leather for a Journal

My friend and I really want to find a leather journal, but so far we've had no success so I thought it might be easier to just make one but for that we need to find some good leather.  I have no idea where to find leather, so any advice will help.  I live in Westerville OH but anywhere near columbus would be good too.  I don't want to have to buy leather off of the internet because then I can't feel it and assess its quality.

'Leather' channel under 'Workshop'?

I believe a 'Leather' channel under the 'Workshop' category would be a good idea. I say this, because I'm often looking for leather-related instructables, and I suspect that many other people are, too. Leatherworking is as much its own specialized skill as sewing, woodworking, electronics, etc. Maybe you could even inaugurate the grand opening with a contest. :)

How do a cut and etch a belt out on a laser cutter when the leather is larger than the machine?!

Hi I would like to cut and etch leather to make belts.  However, the hides are large and even if I roughly cut the size it may fit width wise but length wise it will be too long.  I could perhaps try to line it up then shift it along but this isn't very precise and if I'm etching a pattern I fear I wouldn't line it up very well....   Also does anyone know what to treat leather with after it's been etched? after my experimentation it smells and leaves a black residue on your skin if you touch it.  I appreciate all and any answers! cheers, Lara.

Cork Leather/Fabric Upholstery?

Can't find much information on this material, so I figured I would ask here. I'm rebuilding my motorcycle and was playing with the idea of upholstering the seat with cork leather/fabric. Has anyone here had any experience with it? Would it be durable enough for daily use? Is there any particular product I could use to seal it, possibly with a gloss finish? I appreciate any information you can provide. Thanks.

What kind of leather projects are you interested in seeing Instructables for?

I am new to this site, but I have been working with leather for a little while and I have over 200 projects done. I have also done work with metal fabrication (custom BBQ pits), foam sculpting, engraving, sand blasting, stained glass, and whatever else I can get my hands on. I am by no means an expert, but I am better at some things than I am at others. Is there anything in particular you would like to see instructions for or do you just want me to shoot from the hip?

heavy duty snap source for making leather bracelets?

Hi,   Have been looking at the tutorials for making leather bracelets.  Purchased a snap setter from a craft store but the snaps aren't deep enough.  The leather is too thick for the snaps, it barely gets through the leather.   There's no way it could make the connection to attach the snaps to the leather.  The leather I'm using is about 1/8" or 3mm thick; about the thickness of a belt.  Suggestions for sources? Thanks!

how to make a sprayable leather scent?

Many years ago I purchased an essential oils mixture from a small company that sadly is no longer in business.  This spay smelled exactly like leather, but I have no idea what the actual makeup was.  The closest thing I have found commercially is the leather scented air freshener from Yankee Candle.  Aside from running the inventory of a Wilson's Leather Store through a juicer, does anyone know a recipe for a leather scent?

My Experiment with a leather handle binding

So the other day i was bored, i got to thinking about dagorhir, it looked so fun, i just needed an awesome suit of armor and a sword. so i tried this, i took 2 strips of leather and tacked them into place, then i wrapped the leather around this dowel. after i got to the end of the stick i made a pommel out of more leather. then i took out the butane torch, i singed the leather so that it curled up at the edges causing a nice grippy feel. so, is this thing full of fail or full of win?

Pasting luggage labels to a leather suitcase

Hi everyone, Looking for a bit of advice, I found an old cow hide suitcase and bought some vintage style adhesive luggage labels. Only question is how to I stop them peeling off. Can I varnish over the whole thing? If so what kind of varnish? I’m worried about damaging the already pretty shabby leather case. Is there a special kind of adhesive I should have used rather than relying on the stickiness of the labels?

Leather Spine on Plastic Coated Binding? Answered

Hi All. My name is Craig and I've been binding books for a while and come up with a problem today. I hade some pages ring-bound (You know, where they punch the paper with those square holes and hold them together with the plastic ring strip.) Anyways, there were too many pages, making the binding weak and so I decided to bind them. I've done this before by simply sowing together through all the bindng holes and then creating and attaching a cover like with a standard book. However, this time I was (1) lazy and didn't feel like going through all the effort to make a proper binding cover, (2) there was already a perfectly good front and back cover page which I wanted to keep anyway, and (3) I liked the look of the current binding (it has a clear plastic sheet ove the back page and front page) and want to keep the same look. Okay, now my problem is that when sowing together the pages I kept the plastic sheets over the front and back pages to maintain that gloss look. (It's those plastic A4 sheets that they normally place on the front page when plastic-ring binding - though I had one placed over the back too.) The pages are bound perfectly fine and sturdy but the sowing looks unsightly. I cut a piece of leather to place over the spine and overlapping onto the front and back page edges by about 1cm. The leather is very thin and has thin fabric-like mesh on the back lining it. I have no idea what to do to hold them together. At the moment I scrapped the plastic a bit with a needle to create a slightly rough surface to try help with the glue and am holding the bond down with a heavy weight. Though I highly doubt this will hold even if I let it dry. If this doesn't work I thought of maybe trying to use a hot glue gun and putting glue on the leather and then trying the same weight method again. I'm a little weary of using hot glue though as I don't want to ruin the pages as they were expensive to print and took so much time to print and bind. Does anyone have any ideas what I could try? P.S. Apologies that there are no pictures to show what I'm working with.
