Radioactive Legos!!!!!

Help me please! Yesterday, when I got home, I found these (legos in picture) in my lego city! Luckily, little other damage was done, but what can I do?! I have never come across this problem before! And when I tried to discipline the rouge legos for their radioactive behavior, they wouldn't listen!!! How do I stop the insolent radioactive leogs?! That;s right, they're even calling themselves leogs now!

Lego Creations

I came across not one, but two very cool Lego sculptures. The first is a perfect rendering of Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye, one of the most famous houses in architecture. Make sure to check out the original pictures of the house along with the Lego reproduction if you haven't seen the house before. The second is a must-see for all Star Wars fans: a nearly 4,000 piece, $400 dollar Lego Death Star diorama. It comes complete with Lego-ized versions of all of the major characters and depicts 14 scenes from the IV and VI. Bad news for all you Jar Jar Binks fans, though: Lego Jar Jar is not included in this set.Villa Savoye via MakeDeath Star

LEGO Kits

I'm putting together a few kits to make a LEGO Candy Dispenser. LEGO is usually pretty expensive but I'm trying really hard to make them all reasonably priced so I'm still working out what to charge for them.  My real question though is whether or not LEGO kits would have much demand. I would like to put together kits based off of my other Instructable projects like Bendy Lego because I know it can be difficult/pricey to get enough pieces for projects like that in the traditional way.  Any feedback about kits you would like to see made, either from projects I have already posted or something entirely new, or any tips would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for reading and be sure to keep a lookout for the candy dispenser kits which I'll try to post by the end of this week.

LEGO Sandcrawler

LEGO and Star Wars fans, get ready to have your mind blown! Flickr member Marshal Banana has created a scale replica of the iconic Sandcrawler, as seen in A New Hope. There are LED's inside and out, faux weathered exterior, an operable ramp that drops down and even a crane that can lift cargo and place it on a conveyor belt inside. And yes, it moves. The entire project took 9 months to plan and build. Here's some quick facts about the project, taken from his YouTube video page: Dimensions: 96 cm long, 100.5 cm long (lowered main ramp) Weight: ~20 kg Part count: over 10,000 Power functions: 4 xl motors, 5 m motors, 4 receivers, 4 battery packs, 22 Lego LED-lights Powered radio-controlled Functions: driving: forward reverse steering main ramp: up and down crane: up and down, in and out conveyer band: forward and reverse You can check out his Marshal Banana's Flickr page and see some amazing pictures of the inside of the Sandcrawler, as well as some of his other work.

Crazy LEGO animation

This LEGO animation has been bouncing all over the Interwebs this weekend. It's pretty stunning stuff since it was all done with LEGO and by one person who clocked 1,500 hours on it. It goes to show how much you can do with a pile of LEGO and a regular digital camera. That all said, the video is still a little slow and can do with about a minute less footage. So I'm definitely curious to see the next video from these guys in another year or so.

Lego CAD software

I just thought that the Lego-ers (?) would like to know about Ldraw, open source CAD software specifically for designing Lego models. Have a look at this BBC News story to see a chap who built a model of St Pancras' railway station to a scale suitable for minifigs. Of course, you may not wish to go "open" with your software (I doubt that Ldraw has been as thoroughly debugged as Firefox, for instance), so you may with to use the official Lego CAD software.

Smash atoms with Lego!

... or at least detect the debris of smashed particles with Lego: The LHC scientists do not yet have enough data to claim a discovery. But in the meantime, at home in Copenhagen, one physicist Sascha Mehlhase from the Niels Bohr Institute has made a part of the collider, the Atlas detector, out of LEGO toy bricks. »It took me about 48 hours to build the 3D model on my laptop and another 33 hours to actually put together all the pieces, this whole process spread out over several weeks,« explains Sascha. The model is made of 9,500 lego bricks and is about 1:50 in scale. There is no construction manual yet, but there will soon be one, he says on his website. The model is very intricate, even showing the innermost pixel detector. University Post article. Gallery of images.

Lego Printer == Awesome

The last Lego forum thread I started went down a storm so when I saw this Lego printer online at BoingBoing today I HAD to post it too. YouTube user Horseattack posted this video a few days ago of a printer that he made using Lego to move a felt tip pen across the page. He doesn't give much detail about how it was made or any instructions on how to do it, but the video is pure awesome. Here's what he had to say about it in the video description: "Lego felt tip 110" printer connected to an Apple Mac. This is not a kit you can buy and does not use mindstorms. I designed/built/coded it all from scratch including analog motor electronics, sensors and printer driver, the USB interface uses a "wiring" board.

LEGO Difference Engine

 Babbage never got a chance to build his difference engine. Ironically it is considered one of the most advanced and is arguably the most famous of these old mechanical computers. One was eventually made in 1991  for the Science Museum in London. Don't live in London? Too far to drive? Well, no worries, Andrew Carol has built a working difference engine from LEGO's and with a kind donation of server space from Steve Wozniak, he's posted a very detailed explanation of his project so you can build one too! acarol.woz.org/

Lego FIRST competition

Well, today I went along with Caitlin's school robotics club to see them participate in qualifying rounds in order to advance to the New York City city-wide champs. Woot, they made it enough in the rankings to advance and fun was had by all. It was my first time at one of these things and it was pretty well organized considering the number of teams shuttling back and forth between rooms to do the robotics challenges/missions and presentations to judges. Kids use Lego Mindstorm NXT robot kits and build/program them to accomplish a list of tasks to be performed in the "pit". Of course, everything can go wrong from your batteries not being charged, pieces falling apart, programs not working, forgetting the laptop charger, and worrying about the school bus making it home before the snow storm. Fourth graders did research projects and presentations on how robotics impacted environmental issues. Fourth and fifth grader teams did the robot challenges and presented their robots to the judges. The FIRST program is really to have fun while using technology, learn something, and to develop teamwork and good sportsmanship. One of our teachers even wrote up a school cheer and song just for Robotics. The second pic is of another school who happened to have a live team mascot(where else can you wear a propeller beanie and be proud?). The amount of geek-strogen present was incredible. This happened to be Tetranitrate's stomping grounds but I didn't find any evidence of charred walls. I might just have to make Robohoodies for all the kids when they compete again in March. Anyone else out there doing Lego FIRST robotic league?
