Last year I bought a 5mw eBay laser (green 532nm wavelength) and it had an adjustable focus. I scratched the lens and it never focus right so I took the lens off. Now I am interested in fixing it again and I don't know how to get/make/buy/obtain a new lens for the laser. It always said it was 5mw but I think it was more powerful because it could burn through bags, light leaves on fire, pop balloons, light matches at 6 inches. I found a broken cell phone with it’s camera and wondered if the lens could be used as a microscope objective. Image A shows the lens and it’s mounting with the CCD. The back of the lens is shown. The lens is about 4 to 5 mm in diameter. The starters from florescent lights make good lens holders. Image B shows a starter along with my modifications to hold the cell camera lens. The starter tube has 4 slits along the length so it can be compressed to fit the turret of the microscope. Image C shows it mounted on the turret. Image D shows the resulting view of a feather. It’s quite bad. Image E shows, for comparison, the view through an ordinary 20x objective (.40 NA). Here are some more lenses that I tried: Lens from a discarded flatbed scanner..... Very good! Lens from a 8mm movie camera...... Fair. Lens from the laser pickup of a discarded CD player..... Almost worthless. To take pictures through the microscope, I used eyepiece projection with a wide angle eyepiece. The lens on the camera was set to wide angle and maximum aperture, with a remote used to trigger the shutter. The camera’s LCD was used to focus and adjust the image. The camera’s autofocus handles the rest. For even illumination, be sure to center the objective lens over the substage condenser.

Hi! I have no idea whether this is the right place to post this topic, but it does say 'burning questions' and that's what this is, so here goes. :-) I've had this idea for a kind of pinhole lense slide projector. The (very basic) diagram is pretty self explanatory, and I was wondering if anyone's tried/heard of anything like this, and whether it could work? Do you think a 100 LED torch would be bright enough? Also, if I'm right in thinking that LEDs don't get hot, there shouldn't be a risk of overheating/fire should there? Thanks! Looking forward to hearing what you think! :-)

It is a JVC GR-AX280, it is old, the batteries arent discharged yet, however it uses small VHS tapes and those are expensive and old, and tend to not work as well as they should. The other thing is it still woks perfectly fine its just i want a DSLR and i thought mabey making a temporary one out of the lense and etc from it. It also has a almost microscopic LCD type screen where they eye peice is and i thought about making like a hud or somthing. But i am at your mercy people of instructables, do your worst :D

Iv been looking at the laser cutter 'ables and am wondering it its possible to combine say 10 fairly high powered (cheap/er) lasers into a single beam to create a more powerful burn. id prefer not to go out and buy $2000 worth of laser which ill most likely break. or get arrested for trying to bring through customs. i was thinking of using a diverging lens to make the spread out rays in a parallel path. in diagram i understand that mounting the lasers will be a challenge.. but will constructive/deconstructive interference be a problem.. i didnt listen to well in physics. any ideas would be appreciated grim out.

I am looking all over the place and can't find an Over the shoulder camcorder under $1000. definition doesn't need to be HD but an external mic input would be nice. i need a camera that looks like you know what you're doing because it feels awkward asking people questions with a dinky HD cam. if over the shoulder isn't possible anything big would be nice. anything would be nice but SD or HDD would be nice.

Greetings; My projector currently has a high pressure fancy schmancy bulb and when it goes (after another few thousand hours hopefully) I want to replace it with a high power (~100 watt) LED. That's the easy part. I can interface with the projector and convince it there is a real bulb firing up - but I need the optics. Basically, it's a DLP projector so all the light has to be focussed on just under a 2x2cm square hole to hit the colour wheel. The LED in question is already over that size on the diode die alone. There are parabolic reflectors available (I think my best option) but they still have a positive beam spread - I need a shrinking beam. It doesn't have to be perfectly collimated, but I bet that helps. The original lamp definitely has a converging beam but its hard to measure as you can't operate the lamp with the cover open (safely). SO I'm thinking diode >> reflector (like flashlight) >> convex or fresnel lens. I can't get better measurements at the moment for I'm not near the machine and its finnicky to take off the ceiling. Penny for your engineering thoughts? How does a telescope work different from a camera lense? I'm specifically wondering about magnification. With a camera lense, a longer lense means higher magnification so to get really high magnification it needs a really long lense. With a telescope they just change the eyepiece to get higher magnification and don't change the length of the telescope.. How is it telescopes can change magnification like that and camera lenses can't?--tradingmic.com

This would be for a laser tag gun, more than one infra red LED could greatly improve distance (so it is theorized) but if you think it wouldn't, give us a yell. How it normally works in the gun, is a high powered infrared LED with an already tight beam of about 20 degrees is projected onto a double convex lense about 2 to 5 cm in diameter. The beam is focused by moving the LED back and forwards with snipers having tight beams for the longest range and others having very wide beams to limit range and but improve accuracy at close range. Any help is much APPRECIATED. OH and someone recommended a cube beam splitter but i have no idea what they are so you may want to look them up... THANKS COMMUNITY

If you had, say, light from a torch or whatever, directed it through a metal pipe or fiber optic to get it kind of directional, and then into some arrangement of lenses; what kind of maximum range could you expect before it completely lost focus? And would it still obey the inverse square law, or is that just for expanding spheres of light?

I want to make my own 3D video and I only have one camera. could I make a camera attachment in a "T" shape and use a prism to split the camera's focal point to the left and right then have each direction hit a 45 degree mirror to turn the focus back to the front of the camera and set a filter on each side of attachment that will correspond to filters on lenses of 3D glasses, and have this make a stereoscopic video with one camera? Could anybody who has experience with prisms and lenses verify if this would work before I start building a prototype...

Hi most brilliant community- Unfortunately, I'm very accident prone and dropped my Canon Powershot SD1100. The lense will not retract. When I turn it on you can hear the motor whirring, but it's not taking the lens in. An error message pops up sayin "lense error, restart camera" which I've done. I have also googled this error have been to many sites that tell you to hit it, or push this button while pushing that button but I can't seem to get it to budge. I did open it up to take a look and the lense is, of course fully enclosed. Most replacement lenses are arount $80 w/o labor. I am convinced that this camera can be saved (without mucho dollars) Has anyone ever taken one apart and more importantly, mended a camera such as this? Can a klutzy but resourceful girl (me) fix this on my own? I have a second camera (same type) that i spilled a melted frosty all over and now it wont turn on. I'll leave that situation for another time! Thank you to anyone and everyone who has any suggestions!

Hi Everyone, I am trying to make my own night vision headset/goggles following this kiplay's guide. I have a electric viewfinder from an old JVC GR-AX5 video camera. I have removed the viewfinder and dismantled it but I am not sure which of the 7 cables are, (i.e. ground, power, video etc). How would I identify this, and could you please go in-depth as I am not hugely experienced in electronics, but I am learning. I have enclosed pictures, if that helps, but I do apologise for the poor quality. As the picture is hard to tell, the cable colours are (not in this order); Black, white, red, redy/brown (i am unsure, i am colourblind), yellow, orangey and a pinky purply colur. How do I identify them? On a second note, for anyone who has followed this tutorial, can you recommend a good camera to get in the UK? Many thanks, and I hope someone can come through for me, Alex

I have seen somewhere a cut down digital camera rehoused in a wooden box. the thought strikes me- I have several redundant Olympus lenses could I successfully take a point and shoot digital camera, remove the lens, mount the camera body in a box and add my Olympus lenses to the front to make an exchangeable lens digital camera? I realize I would need to get the lens to CCD distance right but that doesn't seem to be all that difficult - I can engineer an adjustable mount if necessary. it seems a pity to have all these lenses and nothing to do with them. Opinions guys?

Hi, i would like to ask for opinion, i am building a solar system where my system start from using a fresnel lense to collect the sun and use it to heat up a boiler, the boiler transfer steam into my tesla turbine and the turbine will turn my generator to produce electricity. So, I had an idea some time back, to inset a rectangle cutting of a lens off a pair of glasses, into an eye cup for your camera. Costco sell their lenses to minors for 20 dollars, if I could get them to sell me just lenses, would a glass cutter like they have at home depot (i think) be able to cut it down to a small rectangle? I have a idea, to create digital soldering glasses but don't have any inclinations on what direction to go or what mats. to use. I have entertained microscope lenses, ben franklin-esk, lenses (not digital),surveillance pens( not sure how to zoom them),phone cameras( no idea how they zoom either (not in a diy fasion)) a small screen to a hacked digital camera scope, I am a experienced circuit developer with limited understanding of optics. so here is the question if not "think tank" disclosure. if you were to make "zoom glasses" what you use and why. other low tech to turn digital to be jewelry quality scopes. magnifying lenses for eyeglass repair, etc. thanks for your time and consideration.

I would like to make a 'solid' ray box (not out of cardboard!), preferably with more than one slot, and shine the rays from it to a set of mirrors, prisms, and all different kinds of reflective/refractive materials. The light would bounce off quite a few medias so I imagine it needs to be quite strong, but again, how strong? I know I need a fresnel lense in order to make the rays coming out of my ray box parallel but what is the rule, what distance does the lense need to be from the source of light, and does it depend on the size and strength of the light? Hello all, After using my Nikon D40 with the kit lens for about two years now, I think I'm ready to buy some extra lenses for it. I have two primary needs that I hope to satisfy with no more than two lenses, and hopefully just one. 1. Macro photography. For my work on Instructables I take a lot of macro shots, and I find the kit lens (or is it the camera?) difficult to use for this. When the minimum focal length is 8 inches or more it's just really hard to get a good shot. For this need I'd be happy with a manual focus lens since I'd be the only one using it. But, I really need tighter macro shots than the kit lens - whether this lens can get physically closer or whether it needs to be telephoto I don't really care. 2. Low Light. My wife and I often find ourselves in situations where we'd like to take photos of people (and especially children!) in low light, without a flash. Obviously, this leads to lots of blurring and other undesirable mistakes. I think a nice, fast lens on the order of f/1.8 or f/1.4 would do the trick, and Nikon makes a nice AF-S model for less than $200. The trouble is the lack of zoom - I think I could deal with it, but my wife uses the whole range of 18-55mm on the kit lens and would probably throw her hands up in despair if that ability were missing. So what's the solution here? Thanks for any suggestions you folks can provide, especially when it comes to older lenses. Apparently the D40 can mount old non-AI Nikon lenses which is good news I guess, because it opens up a whole world of used lenses. Beyond that I must plead ignorance... EDIT: I'm somewhat leaning towards the fast 35mm f/1.8 AF-S prime lens and an extension tube set for macro. Still researching, though.... EDIT 2: Still liking the looks of the 35mm prime, but now considering a Nikon 3T or 4T diopter macro filter, if I can find one... EDIT 3: SOLUTION: I ended up buying the 35mm f1.8 prime lens and a 10x achromatic macro filter (I didn't manage to find a Nikon filter, but I did find one that claimed to be a true achromat lens setup. We'll see when it arrives!)

So i was disassembling a toshiba rear projection for the fresnel lense, and figured i'd pull the rest of it apart and see what parts i could salvage, i got to the gun assembly (i think its called that) and was pulling one of the guns to bits to salvage the lens mount and discovered there was some sort of liquid between the gun and the lenses, it smelt strongly like alcohol and burnt when i held a flame to it long enough, i got some on my hands and my hands started getting a burning sensation so i washed it off and stored it in an icecream container can anyone tell me what the liquid is? why is it inside the tv/projection guns?

Old Neighbor of mine was a Senior Laser Technician for Liconix about 10-15 years ago probably still works there. Anyhow he always would always be working on lasers Argon, Helium, Krypton, and his classic cars and overtime his family became sort of family to me. I would watch in awe as he worked trying to learn as much as possible. So I would help him work on his cars or Fix a PC for him here and there or take care of his son. I was only 13 at the time, but he was nice enough to give me a couple lasers for helping that his work was going to discard, some helium, Argon. I had to give the Argon back though because he sold his house and was moving to a better neighborhood. Plus it kept blowing the fuses in my parents'house from the power load. PGE was getting angry cause for some reason the street light sensors in my neighborhood were somehow getting burned out all the time *shrug* I don't know how and had to keep repairing them. Before he left he gave me some extra tubes for when my others eventually died. Most helium and tons of lenses of various sizes which are all tucked away in a box. In my dad's Garage of Death yeah he's a pack rat. But I found a couple of the lenses when I came to visit that I had sitting around the house and thought to myself time to dig the box out, so I'm slowly digging my way to it. Just don't know what fun project to do with all of it other than making a Laser Beam of doom or putting them on Sharks with fricken laser beams attached to their heads I also have a Fresnel lens from a 45 inch rear projection TV. Any Idea what fun project I should make with all of it ? I bet it would make one hell of a laser pointer for my Celestron GPS-GOTO C11 Telescope haha.Thanks for any idea's.
