Well that certainly spoiled my day

My student loans got screwed up! It should be fixed now, but won't know for ten days (at the most, they said), scary, what with bills and tuition to pay too. Add to that two exams (Kinematics and ceramic materials) and a presentation and a senior design report all in that time period. And my wife's so upset about the loans she's refusing to speak to me. School sucks kids! Okay, only some of the time, the rest of the time it freaking rocks. Spent the evening hiding out at a friends watching Hot Fuzz. Just wanted to unload.

What is the best way to fund graduate school?

Right now there are thousands of university employees rummaging through and scrutinizing even more thousands of graduate school applications all over America (as well as other places, I would presume). Five of those applications are mine. Let's assume one of those five is a Yes. Now that I've been accepted, next Fall will start a trend of large amounts of money leaving my bank account rather than entering it as is the case with my current full-time job. I am guessing that a good chunk of people on here have probably gone through a similar situation, and I would like to know what the best way to pay for graduate school is. I have $10k of loans still haunting me from undergrad. Not too much in the grand scheme of things, but it's there. Grad studies will add quite a bit to that heap. Summary: What is the best way to pay for graduate school? What are reasonable living expenses during graduate school? (not a big spender here)

Is there any way to encourage banks/lenders to make a loan on a foreclosure/bank owned home? or a home that needs work?

My wife had good credit when she married me, I've always had marginal/poor credit, but see that there are dozens of homes that could use some work in our town, and for really cheap ($20k-$40k). I would certainly do a lot of the work myself, but don't know how that would affect said lender's opinion.

misusing instructables

My husband and I caught this - https://www.instructables.com/id/10000-Fast-Bad-Credit-Personal-Loans-Easy-To-Q/ posted as an instructable and it is obviously an attempt to sneak an ad in as an instructable.  One of the reasons we love this site is because you aren't flooded with ads and we both suspect you'd appreciate being notified.  I'm sure you will see it addressed promptly.  Thank you.

What Do you think of these jokes

Hello, Daredevil 499 here, and I would like to introduce to you my new idea of posting 2 or 3 jokes, 2 or 3 times a week. I will post jokes almost every week, and I want You to vote For your favorite Joke. Just post a comment with a number (either 1, 2, or 3) representing which joke you like best. I'll keep posting if people like it. Here are the jokes: 1. Why did the cookie cry? Because his mother was a wafer so long! 2. What is it called when you loan money to a buffalo? A Buffa-loan! 3. What happened when the butcher backed into his meat grinder? He got a little behind in his work! Well let me know what you think, and don't forget to subscribe!   (the jokes will get better as time goes on, and I will add a link to this when I make my next post)

Moving Back In With Your Parents?!

Is this a good idea? Who ever thinks moving back in with your parents is a GOOD thing? Perhaps when it comes with free room and board and helping you pay back your college loans. Here's the deal:I move States and help work at my brothers' store in exchange for not having to stress about rent, paying back college loans - basically about life. But is it truly stress free? What about the stress attained after reverting back to your childlike role? Granted, I'll have more time to plan on grad school and writing on the side...I can't stand my Dad. He's going senile and has a short temper after he gets into your business and doesn't understand - and I lack the patience. He'll start yelling and reverting back to his "I'm the tyrannical boss" mode one moment and forget he wasn't as gentle as he is in the next.I see my brothers - they're both in their 30s and technically, it's their house they want me to move into, but they don't date, they don't have time what with working so much. And my mom cooks all the time and I've already gained 10 pounds from the Christmas break visit.I'm just wondering if life will ever be stress-free or if it just transcends...

How do you build an onion dome ? Like on St Basil's Cathedral in Red Square?

How did they build those domes on the towers ? Are the domes wood or brick ? Some have a neat spiral pattern to them also . Are they covered in sheet metal ? I have been researching this online and through inter-library loans and find nothing about how only who or why . Ivan the Terrible had it built by Postnik Yakovlev actually the Cathedral of The Intercession of the Virgin to honor a military victory in Kazan.

Question about three card brag in the film Lock,Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.? Answered

In the film Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, the  game comes down to two players; Hatchet Harry And Eddie, ( If you've seen the film please skip to the end for the question) Eddie does not have enough to continue. The croupier says- We'll have to see your cards if no one lends you the money. Hatchet offers to lend him the money. Eddie says- No, I think I'd rather turn 'em over. Hatchet-We don't have to turn 'em over because you can borrow....you need five hundred grand to see me.  Eddie-  That' s if I wanna see you. Hatchet- Your gonna have a problem carrying on, ain't ya? Eddie- I'll see you. I've never played this game  so my question is;   Is it in the rules that if you run out of money in this position in a game, that you have to carry on if someone offers to lend you the money; or was Hatchet  insisting that Eddie take the loan through intimidation alone? Thank you...you toerags.

Vacuum Pump Limit Switch System

Hey Everyone... I'm Alive! I've just been really busy with my senior design project :DSo today I acquired ToolUsingAnimal's vacuum pump on loan. I'm going to be doing some vacuum bagging.... To prevent his pump from blowing out, I need to make a limit switch so the pump shuts down when it reaches full vacuum and then turns back on if some of the vacuum bleeds of somewhere. So the method I cooked up today was to use a syringe with a weight. The weight will pull the syringe open and close a micro switch that turns the compressor on. If there's vacuum, the plunger will be fully retracted and the switch will be open (off position). This method will cost me all of $5 or so (10 cents for the syringe and $4 for the switch).I was just doing some math on how much weight I'll need for different syringe sizes - and it's totally plausible (we're talking less than a pound to 3 pounds depending on syringe diameter).Question - any other suggestions or blatantly obvious/easy/cheap solutions? I know this sounds Rube Golbergian, but it's not nearly as complicated as it sounds (or looks) :D Emphasis on cheap, I just put in an order for roughly $2000 of materials and supplies!

Diy LED strip light powered from a solar powered battery bank (for painting/drawing at night)

I like to paint nightscapes and so far headlamps are not working so well for me. I used a portable light bar one night that worked well (on loan) but it was too heavy. I've been through stores looking for the right thing...and harbor freight came close. But I need something lighter weight and less expensive.  Two or three led lights don't cast enough light and 30 led storebought lights are too much light. I have a solar powered phone charger with battery bank (with usb connections) that I now plan to use as the portable power source. I plan to use a pringles potato chip tube as the light housing that can be attached by clips to my pochade (really a mod'd cigar box) on top of a camera tripod. I guess my main concern is weight on the box, so I thought running a cable off a power source hanging from the tripod would be more secure and less likely to fall in my palette (as has already happened). I need help figuring out the circuit board; and also choosing the right white led for color purposes. Any thoughts?

For Sale-- Long Range Wireless Networking Equipment --- New and Used

I worked with a local business for 2 years helping to set up and maintain a long range wireless network system to provide DSL internet to rural people. It reached over 75 miles from end to end with several offshoot branches. The owner applied for an extension on a Small Business Incubator loan that had come due and for some reason they said no. They called in the loan and he shut everything down because he didn't have the cash to cover it. Anyway, 2 years later and the dust and lawsuits have settled and my former boss has asked me to sell off all the salvaged and new equipment for whatever I can get for it. Much of it is going to be going on E bay. But before I start with that I thought I would give the instructables community a first chance at it. I do not yet have a full list of the equipment, some is still out in the field yet to be recovered, and the rest is on its way to me from our former building to sort and evaluate. If you are interested please leave a comment and or send me a message. Some of the new radios will sell for a fair amount, although not as much as if you bought it from the manufacturer. Some of the well used but functional stuff will sell pretty cheap. What is included : Our radios have a reliable range of 25 miles, with directional antennas. The picture is the mast on my house. Some radios are 2.4 MHz and some are 5.8.    The 2.4 which is the standard frequency used for normal wireless served as client radios. The 5.8 ones we used for long reaches to connect the backbone. They can act as bridges in a network or as access points. All have built in router functions. It takes 2, one to send and one to receive to make a network bridge. What can you use them for? They can link up buildings across cities or towns or anything that is in line of sight. We set up an Omni from the internet source and then tasked the surrounding radios to it. One central omni radio can connect with 200 or more clients. The local  school district uses this same technology to link all their buildings together. With just a couple of them you can link your house to your friends house miles away, and have a local LAN with them. They would work for extending LAN game play. You can link your house to your barn or shop or whatever and share your internet  through a router. There are lots of possibilities. We have the radios, the antennas, the cabling, even antenna sections, but I don't know if those can ship UPS. We have it all and its all going to go, which is sad to me but good for you. Possibly the biggest plus is that I will provide you with some tech support to get it up and running if you decide to get anything. I can also pre program the radios here so they are matched and set to link up for you once installed. So, let me know if this is of interest to any of you. I believe the shipment of these radios is limited to the US and Canada but I can check into that if you are from outside those areas.

Linking four(maybe8)24v DC Motors to work together...also possibly a 72v motor as well for a small EV...is it feasible??

Is it possible to connect four,or more(maybe8-even possibly 16!!!is that crazy???) 24 volt dc motors together to run a small ev?The motors were used originally to drive hydraulics on tail lifts at 145bar pressure. Also i have a small 72volt motor as well....can all these motors be linked and run together. To get there'power' to the wheels is a different bridge to be crossed at a different time(so says I optimistically...LOL)!But basically can it be done and how?Is it even feasible?.I will be using the same controller I intend to use for a 48v 120amp DC motor in another EV-the controller runs at 144v and 500amps,but will be enquiring about doubling this. The 24v motors are guestimated to be about 12" in circumference and about 11-12"high(possibly slightly smaller by inch or so).I am not an electrical engineer but am mechanically minded.I also have had a lifelong fear of electricity since being blasted with 240v when i was 6yrs old!!SO PLEASE BE GENTLE!!I know that there are more then enough intelligent and knowledgeable people out there who can maybe help me with this problem which is why I chose to use this forum/site.I really really need your help people.I would be very very grateful for a loan of your knowledge and kindness for doing so.Many many many thanks for your time, your help and most importantly your patience....its very deeply appreciated.Again many thanks.Warren

D Day Fast Approaching

Yup, this weekend marks the deadline where kids pay their deposit to commit to the college that they will attend in the fall. It's a major landmark decision for all and I wish the best of luck to those part of the Class of 2020.  Hopefully all were able to make an informed decision of their choice and will be happy wherever they go. So here are some random thoughts on the process: Applying for college is way different now then from I went through it - Why did all of you do applications for more than 10 colleges? (Is it more trying to game the system for admissions, although colleges game it for their stats rankings, and raking up fees by those testing services/prep courses/financial aid forms) Many are emotionally unprepared for the rejection that comes along with it. Many are emotionally unprepared for the realization that most colleges are super expensive and may not be affordable even if you are accepted. It may appear senseless in who gets in and further who gets merit scholarships or full ride to some places. There is an air of mass hysteria during that wait period for the admission decisions to come out. Certain college forums out there seem to feed on that. Don't chance it. Hard to say what is worse, filling out the CSS Profile financial aid forms or going through a TSA checkpoint on a bad day. Gotta love the financial aid letters stating the school is pleased to offer you a sizeable loan to send your kid to college. I have to say we have been fortunate to be able to make our final decision a few weeks ago. I am also fortunate to have won many instructables contests with t-shirts as prizes. That will be her wardrobe for the next 4 or 5 years.

TechShop's $60M Expansion Plans - coming to a city near you?

This announcement is posted on behalf of Jim Newton, founder of TechShop. September 23, 2013 I have some very exciting news to share with you about the TechShop community and our aggressive expansion plans. Today, the "Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act", also known as the JOBS Act, became law in the United States.  The JOBS Act allows a small company to advertise that it is seeking to raise money through the sale of securities.  Before the JOBS Act, it had been illegal for companies to advertise the offering of securities, and the law restricting that advertising had been in place for 80 years!  That restriction tied the hands of small companies and made it very difficult or even impossible for them to legally attract funding. The JOBS Act, which is a bipartisan law overwhelmingly passed by the Senate and the House and signed into law by President Obama, became law today.  It will be invaluable to start-up companies because it will make it easier for them to seek investment, and will lead to the creation of many new companies and many new jobs. Today, in concert with the JOBS Act becoming law, TechShop has launched an aggressive campaign to raise up to $60 million in funding through the sale of TechShop stock in amounts of $25,000 or more, and through the acceptance of loans of $25,000 or more from individuals.  These funds will be used to build and support new local TechShop locations. Here is a link to the official press release about TechShop's $60 million crowd-funding campaign: When I opened the first TechShop in Menlo Park CA back in 2006, it was only possible to crowd-fund the money we needed because it was legal to advertise our fundraising efforts in the state of California.  California is one of only two states in the United States that allows such advertising...the other is the State of Texas. It was only because we were allowed to advertise that we were able to reach out to our community and ask individual people to loan us $25,000 each.  We crowd-funded TechShop San Francisco and TechShop San Jose the same way, raising about $2.5 million for each of those locations in a matter of weeks. Before the JOBS Act, TechShop has crowd-funded almost $10 million so far to open our existing locations, but we had to do it either within California, or through direct communication with potential investors and lenders.  It was difficult to do this because we could not advertise outside of California, so our tried-and-true method of crowd-sourced fundraising from our community was not scalable outside of the state.  This has limited our expansion. Now, because of the JOBS Act, we can pursue funding from individuals across the country and fulfill our mission to provide every person in every community with access to TechShop's tools, resources and information.  This will allow us to drive the restoration of American manufacturing, help to create new companies and new jobs, and empower even more people to be makers! Here are the next cities in which we would love to build TechShop locations: Baltimore MD Boston MA Cedar Valley IA Chandler AZ (opening Nov 2013) Chicago IL Grand Rapids MI Los Angeles CA Menlo Park CA (moving to a new location) New York City NY Pittsburgh PA Portland OR Seattle WA St. Louis MO Washington DC (in Arlington VA) If your city is not listed above, here's the most exciting part:  As part of our $60 million fundraising campaign, we have set up a way on our web site for people to vote to determine which community the next TechShop will be located! For more information about how individuals, companies, institutions, and governments can invest or become lenders in TechShop, and how they can vote for their hometown to be the next to have a new TechShop location, please visit our investment page. Please help us spread the word so we can open new locations in the communities that want, and need, TechShop the most. Sincerely, Jim Newton Founder and Chairman, TechShop, Inc. http://www.techshop.ws/

would you throw an unemployed lazy sibling out of the inherited house that was left to be divided between 6 others?

I am the eldest of 7 siblings. I helped my parents and 5 younger siblings to purchase their first house, which they could not afford any other way at that time. I lent them the down payment with the agreement that my husband and I had half of the interest. I also wanted to help them with their financial stature. Owning a house and paying a mortgage will help their credits. My mother being the adult and saner when it comes to financial issues, so I thought, that I had a serious talk with her about the half interest between them and my husband and I. Three years later, they bartered the house for a new townhouse, without our knowledge, not being in the title.  I made a big issue about not getting my half interest upon knowing they purchased a new townhouse. They gave me and my husband our money back from the second mortgage loan of the new townhouse. To this day, according to them since we received our money back, my husband and I are no longer entitled to any more profit. Our parents passed away and left a Will that the town house be divided to us, 7 siblings. Our lazy sibling who is unemployed for years does not want to move out of the townhouse and does not want to follow what the Will said.  Our talks always ended in a screaming episode each time by my telling her to do right thing. To have a meeting and not hide the Will so she could stay in the rent free house that our mother left for all of us. Our mother who survived longer than our father made the mortgage payments for my two siblings left living with her are unemployed. The others moved out and god married and only sibling left who is unemployed and wanting to live forever as she can and refuses to discuss about what to do with the Will left by our mother. What shall I do? Please help and pardon my explanation if not so clear. Thank you.

Upper Part of Window won't come down and its covering the screen?

Bought a home in November. After crazy requirements for my bank loan and township requirements, the past owner hired his nephew, and let's just say, he went a little paint crazy. Yes inspection wise and walk through wise we opened the windows. (These are the old chain windows)  I honestly don't remember if the top part of the window were pulled down to test. But I know the bottoms opened at one point. I moved in, and since it was winter, I never thought anything about it. Fast forward to today....dying to open some windows. Got the bottoms up with resistance and then realized the screens were pulled all the way up to the top behind the upper window with a lock on them. Went to pull down the top part of the window to get the screen and they won't budge at all. Can't pull the screen down from the outside because of the lock. This is only on 5 windows on the first floor and 1 in the upstairs bathroom. The two rooms downstairs that are the problems are my living room and dining room, yet we did not have a problem with two very small windows that frame the others . (same age and type of window, just half the size in width)We were able to do my bedroom no problem. Got chisels and putty knives etc....they aren't budging. I heard to also try on the outside since they may have been painted out there too. I also heard they may be nailed or screwed in. All of the windows appear to be the same type and age (the house was built in 1930...unfortunately I do think they are original to the house) We will try from the outside and also check for screws. My fear is that it is just the age of them. Any other ideas???? A side question that may sound stupid? If I can't get them down, is there any way to get temp screens already made to put in on the bottom since I can't get the ones that are there down? We have heavy duty screen that we used to redo my porch door after my dog put a hole in it...I'm very close to stapling it up to the windows or something because I'm already feeling hot and claustrophobic !!! : )

Not sure if there is an intro forum so I posted here

I posted this in the pro section as well under the "welcome" forum, not really sure where it belongs. . . Hey guys, I just wanted to introduce myself to the community here, and shoot some ideas off of you.  I have been a lurker going on a year now for instructables, and I decided to join when my friend submitted a project.  He did the www.instructables.com/id/Pallet-Playhouse/ Pallet Playhouse where he built a playhouse out of used pallet wood.  If you haven't seen if, I would suggest a quick look he did a good job on it! For me, I think I have decided on what I want to do, and I wanted some suggestions from you guys in terms of what I could do for my project.  I want to build a system to connect ski boots to skis and recharge the heaters on the boots via solar power on your skis.  Now, I am not sure of the surface area of solar cells that I would need, the power the boots usually run off of, if it is better to just buy an existing system, or if I should put in some kapton heaters and a control system, and do the board design myself.  I have seen even etching for board designs here, so I could theoretically do this very cheap in terms of monetary cost if I wanted to go that route.  What I am looking for is going through a good cost breakdown analysis, what my budget in time and money is, and what is doable.  I am pretty handy, and will mess with anything I can get my hands on, and I have a fairly high learning IQ so I would be able to replicate most of the instructables here just to give you an idea at what I could do. So here is what my ideas are initially.  Taking an existing boot and battery system, disconnecting the existing battery pack, putting on my own battery system, and using the solar power to top off/charge the batteries. . .or using the solar power to power the batteries.  I still need to see what the power requirement is for existing boots, and what the maximum power output per ski would be if I had solar cells on the ski, what to do with the excess power, if there is any, how to handle the overflow power, waterproofing the system etc, but I think it is doable.  I am unemployed, and I have a business that I am planning, but I am awaiting loan approval from the bank, so I have a few weeks of free time soon.  I was thinking of some cool projects to do, came to the sight and thought of my own.  I figured this would be a great project to learn some stuff about ee, since I am a me by trade.  Anyhow, I love the site, wanted to introduce myself, and if you have any ideas of suggestions, please let me know. Cheers, Michael

Arguably the original Heavy Metal band, Black Sabbath - Ozzy Osbourne (vocals and harmonica), Tony Iommi (guitars), Bill Ward (drums and vocals), and Geezer Butler (bass) - brought death, drugs, occultism, and all sort of things your Mother doesn't want you to know about to Rock 'n' Roll with 1970's self-titled album (released, appropriately enough, on Friday the Thirteenth). Following quickly on its' heels was Paranoid, then Master Of Reality (with the stoners' anthem, "Sweet Leaf"), and Vol. 4. For Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, they brought keyboardist Rick Wakeman onboard.. With controversial lyrics and song lengths that regularly ran to five and six minutes or more, you weren't likely to hear much of them on the local Pop radio station (shortened versions of "Iron Man" and "Paranoid" managed to get a bit of mainstream airplay in 1972), but they were a staple for Album-Oriented Rock stations and 8-track players everywhere during the '70s. Almost every song here is on my medium- or heavy-rotation list (four or five stars).. I bought the original CD reissues back in the early '80s and was impressed at how much better they sounded than the vinyl/tape I was used to - not great, but definitely better. A friend recently loaned me a set of 320k MP3s from the remastered CDs issued in 2004 by Sanctuary UK. I really wasn't expecting much from the early '70s recordings (and it _is_ Heavy Metal), but thought it would be a good excuse to sit down and have another listen. Was I ever in for a treat! The remastered recordings remove a lot of the "mud" from the recordings and really bring out the instruments, especially the drums - "Children Of The Grave" really benefits from the remastering. The title cut from the self-titled album sounds even more evil (count the number of bell tolls in the intro). Can't really say that the vocals sound any better (or worse, it's still Ozzy at his best) and, at times, there is still enough hiss to be distracting, but overall I was very impressed with the quality.. I'll call these discs a Must Buy for all Black Sabbath fans who have the vinyl, tape, or original CD issues - I'm shopping for my set. Any of the first four CDs would make a great introduction to their music for Heavy Metal fans (1972's "We Sold Our Soul For Rock 'n' Roll" is a 14-cut (two LPs, originally) Best-Of collection that has also been remastered and might be a better choice, even if it doesn't include "Rat Salad"). IMNSHO, Wakeman, although great with Yes and on his own, really detracted from the Black Sabbath sound, so I can't recommend Sabbath Bloody Sabbath for new listeners. -- nacho

McMADSAT make and do, show and tell. Scotland's first Maker Event 2009. Full report

Report of the McMADSAT event 14th March 2009, at the Glasgow Science CentreWe had a fantastic day. Outside it was a grey gale of a day, but inside was a riot of colour and activity. The aim was to enthuse the public with the fun of making things from a variety of technologies. Anyone who wanted to, could join in, make something and take it away with them, and all for free. Hundreds of people of all ages came along and had a great time. A general video of the event can be seen at https://www.instructables.com/community/Mc_MADSAT/ (Thanks to Les Oates for making this excellent film for us).I am happy to discuss further with anyone planning their own event, and you can see more about it and the process by which I got the event going, at http://mcmadsat.blogspot.com/ExhibitorsStar Guest, all the way from London, was Professor Maelstromme (AKA Amanda Scrivener), who brought her beautiful creationsWhat can you make from a dead umbrella? Display of the possibilities for reusing the fabric and structure of dead umbrellas. The Tea Party. 1950s style tea party made from a combination of hand made fabric and edible pieces.Cardboard structures from the students of the department of Architecture at the University of Strathclyde.Greensteam's steampunkery, 101 uses for a dead keyboard and other examples of her work as shown on Instructables. The Offline Mechanical Blog – a very old manual typewriter with continuous paper available for the public to type their messages and thoughts on for all to shareLemonie (another Instructables enthusiast, who travelled up from York especially) brought his amazing conversion of a VHS player-into-toaster that makes toast with VHS imprinted in it. He also brought his nice LEGO USB stick, a lantern made out of a tin-can & glass. and his *untested* wind-turbine, made from VHS player parts. On the Young Makers stand we had a display of virtuoso Lego constructions and an extensive collection of home made Steampunkery. The self-replicating machine from the department of Design Manufacture and Engineering Management at the University of Strathclyde, the Reprap, was on display and moving but sadly not reproducing on the day.ActivitiesThe public were offered a wide range of free hands-on activities, which ran continuously all day, to 'Make and Take'Soldering - make a solar theremin (or a robot). 16 of these were made and all worked first time. Some were taken for a trial run in the sun and a video of this can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzUZMon3vpA The Stemnet ambassadors helped visitors to make their own Musical Straw Oboes. One of the most popular activities – especially with children – the Stemnet ambassadors supervised the making of many handsfull of Gloop. The Stemnet ambassadors used the plastic Polymorph for visitors to make a fingerprint keyring to take away.Fishy things - Busy Bees Art studio provided painting and collage fishes to make, particularly for our very young visitors. The Glasgow Crocheted Coral Reef invited visitors to try their hands at crocheting and contribute to the growing coral reef, all made from wool and even strips of plastic bag. Many total novices not only tried their hands but actually completed a piece of coral to contribute to the reef. This workshop area was very busy throughout, with visitors typically spending 30 minutes or more participating. Many thanks to my civil engineer pal who ran this.House of Cards - visitors could make and take their own set of the design classic 'Eames cards', which slot together to form fantastical structures. Ideal for recycling old greetings cards.Cable necklets, keyboard bracelets and keyboard film wallets. All made from recycled/repurposed materials from dead keyboards. Popular with adults and children alike.Risk assessments were provided to the Glasgow science centre, for all the activities. There were no injuries and the 'emergency first aid bucket of water' was not needed as there were no soldering or gluegun burns.Participant Presenters30 people were involved on the day, either as exhibitors or as workshop facilitators. An essential component of the team was the group of11 Stemnet ambassadors, most of whom were there all day. It would have been impossible to run so many activities without them. Another group in the team was the members of the Glasgow Electron Club who, with some friends and a Stemnet ambassador, ran the soldering workshops continuously all day. We were particularly fortunate to have two exhibitors travel up specially to take part. Several exhibitors were entrepreneurs who gave their time for nothing, even though the venue rules meant they could not sell anything, nor charge for the activities being provided. This was especially generous given the harsh financial climate just now. Everyone said they had lots of fun.PublicOver 1,000 people visited the Glasgow Science Centre on the day. The BSA/NSEW assessment forms collected only represent <10% of the visitors to the McMADSAT area. Stallholders and workshop facilitators estimated a total of about 425 active participants (people who did an activity, or asked questions and generally interacted with the displays) by 1530 (GSC shuts at 1700). However, even these only represent a proportion of the people visiting the event which, although not recorded, probably amount to about double that, since most of the activities were taken up by children accompanied by other family members. The numbers at any given time were variable, depending upon the GSC's own activities/talks etc. I would estimate that the McMADSAT area was visited by at least 700-800 during the day. From the few assessment forms returned, and from chatting to the public, it was clear that most had come simply because they were coming to the GSC anyway, but some (mainly young adults) had come as a result of internet and email information or because of the Metro article. The GSC visitors seem to be mainly families with children of primary school age. The University of Glasgow Steampunk Society had come especially to make contact with the steampunk element, as featured in the Metro article. We also collected some contact details for future events. BudgetThe total budget for the event was the £500 grant provided from NSEW Scotland scheme. This had to cover all the exhibitors' costs and the costs for the free make and take activities, plus all publicity etc.In-Kind Sponsors:The Glasgow Science Centre provided free space, tables, cloths, technical assistance, without which the event would not have been possible at all.The publishers of Make and Craft magazines, O'Reilly's, did not feel able to sponsor us in the same extent as they did for the much larger event in Newcastle on the same day, but did send boxes of back issues of their magazines to give away, which probably amounted to an equivalent of about £300 at UK newsstand prices.Clockworkrobot.com provided more theremin kits than contracted for, which were themselves at cost price.Madlabs provided free batteries for all the kits they supplied at cost.Instructables.com assisted with publicity and allowed the use of their logo.VenueNone of this would have been possible at all, particularly on this minimal budget, without the kindness of the Glasgow Science Centre. The Director agreed immediately to offer us the space free, plus the use of tables and technical help to enable this event to take place. We were able to partially set up the night before which was very helpful in avoiding a scramble on the day. We were able to get the loan of 4 GSC soldering irons which avoided us having to get personal ones PAT tested. This was the ideal venue for us as it meant we really didn’t have to do a great deal of publicity as we could be sure of an audience from the GSC's normal throughput.PublicityThe event was listed in the NSEW diary and in the university of Strathclyde's NSEW information. Posters were distributed around venues in Glasgow and information posted on relevant websites. A blogspace http://mcmadsat.blogspot.com was set up as a temporary web presence to refer people to. The Metro published a small piece which was a wonderful boost.Lessons for the futureNeeded more helpers and more exhibitors. Outdoor displays would have been impossible as the weather was dreadful, but it is still necessary to have some more dramatic displays as well as the hands on activities. Successful soldering for novices really needs 1:1 or 1:2 supervision. The budget only worked because minimal publicity was done at low cost and all the participant presenters were generous with their time and resources. Anything more ambitious than what was done on this occasion would need a larger organising team and significant sponsorship.

Howtoons the Book Launches!

It's been a long journey since I first looked over Saul's shoulder in our shared 4th-floor MIT Media Lab office and saw the proto-sketches that would become Howtoons, but today the book finally launches! Here's the word directly from Saul:I along with my co-authors and illustrators, Nick Dragotta and Joost Bonsen are proud to announce that today is the official publication and release of our fully-illustrated, science-meets-adventure-and-mischief comic book, HOWTOONS ! The Possibilities are Endless. I know I personally am nervous, relieved, and all of the other things that a first time author can be. You can buy the book directly from AmazonAlthough all of the authors wish to compel you to walk, run, or ride a bike to your local book store and get one there (or demand that they carry copies!).We'd like to thank each and everyone on this email list for their moral and other support in the gestation of this exciting project. Thanks for loaning us your children, your ideas, your inspiration and your feedback. Hopefully we are now returning all of them to you in good healthy order and with interest on top! We'd love to encourage you all to buy hundreds and thousands of copies of this book for all of your favourite 4-94 year olds. The jacket copy says 8-12, but we know that our group of friends have nothing but the most intelligent children (hence extending the age range down to 4) as well as being fundamentally immature and appreciative of fart jokes (hence increasing it to 94).HOWTOONS seeks to put the joy, the story, the adventure, the free-spirit, the fun, the downright ridiculousness, and the real heroicism of science and engineering back into education. We do this through stories and illustrations designed to show children that science and engineering is not only one of the coolest possible things that you can study, but that it touches upon everything in modern life and can be found in the simple objects around you... One tag line we often like to associate with the book is: "See the world for what it can be, not for what it is." The world is increasingly technical, and many of the greatest challenges of the 21st century will require technically aware people whether they are working on science and engineering themselves, or whether they are the artists, writers, accountants, musicians, lawyers, politicians and educators who make the world a rich and interesting place to live. I believe the magnificent artwork of Nick also highlights that there is a genuine marriage between the arts and sciences and the oft cited tension between the two is un-necessary as both come from a desire to create and share new ideas and ways of representing them. You can see our new website, including many samples of HOWTOONS and a regularly updated blog at www.howtoons.com. We'd like to send an especially big thanks and shout out to Ryan McKinley for help with the website (if you don't know him you should! He's a programming powerhouse), and of course also to Phil Torrone, everyone's favourite blogger and DIY mastermind. We'd also love to thank all of the people at O'Reilly media, especially Dale Dougherty, Tim O'Reilly, Mark Frauenfelder and Carla Sinclair for including HOWTOONS in their fabulous magazines MAKE and CRAFT (www.makezine.com, www.craftzine.com). Also in the thank-you list should be Judith Regan who plucked us from obscurity to help us get started down the book-making path, and now the wonderful people of Harper Collins Children's Books for all of their help. We should include all of our apologies for editorial lateness!. Naturally we'd like to thank the people at Squid Labs and Eric and Christy of www.instructables.com fame for their support and work in bringing the make-it-yourself ethos to a much larger audience. MIT, MIT's media lab, and MITERS (MIT Electronic Research Society) are also to be whole-heartedly thanked for turning a blind eye to our insanity. The support of all these people and more (you) has been invaluable to us.Not to rest on our laurels — we are already working on a 2nd HOWTOONS book full of more wonderful projects and crazy storylines to encourage you to grab a 9-year-old and relive the joy of messing with world around you just because it's interesting, because rockets are cool, because bugs are fascinating, because flying is magnificent, because mechanisms are intriguing, because a sheet of paper isn't a sheet of paper, it's a work of origami art waiting to (un)fold.Furthermore, we are working on another book project, specifically a selection of DIY projects around the topic of renewable energy presented HOWTOONS-style, in order to encourage energy literacy and intuition amongst the next generation of engineers and scientists. Energy will be one of the key issues of this century and helping people understand all of the options and the promise and beauty of renewable energies is something we believe we can do to help.If you'd like to help support Howtoons in any way we'd love to hear from you; it is still a fledgling project in its infancy trying to wend its way towards fiscal sustainability. The biggest thing most of you can probably do to help is SPREAD THE WORD! Buy some books! Go out and give yourself the experience of reliving the joy of discovering the world by working on some Howtoons projects with your favourite kids (or even better, kids you don't know yet). If you have suggestions for future projects we'd love to hear about them. One of my favourite projects in HOWTOONS Book 1 is an open-source whooppee cushion that delighted my father (and haunted his teachers) when he was a 9-year-old and will hopefully induce raucous laughter everywhere.Again, thank you all.Saul Griffith, Nick Dragotta, Joost Bonsen,co-creators of HOWTOONS!www.howtoons.comPS. Finally, and most importantly I want to wholeheartedly thank my co-authors for their friendships, musings, and hard-work. It's tremendous to work with such great people at the top of their respective games. In case you don't know them (or me):Nick Dragotta first knew the power of comic art when he drew pictures of injuries on the blackboard at school that were so graphic that his fellow classmates had to leave the room to throw up. Since then he has tirelessly practiced the art of comics and researched the great artists of the field. Nick has drawn for Marvel and DC, including Spider-Man, X-men, Fantastic Four, and X-static titles. He is currently passionate about making more comic books for kids. Nick lives in a small apartment with walls lined by the shortened stubs of ruined pencils. He sleeps in a pile of eraser filings, drinks black ink, and exists on a diet of pureed superhero comic books.Joost Bonsen immigrated as a young boy to the United States from the Netherlands with his parents and his personal suitcase full of LEGOs. He grew up in Silicon Valley, California, immersed in that creative and entrepreneurial culture. While Joost was growing up, the vacant lot across the street from home served variously as play space, special effects set, race track, rocket launch pad and more as he and his friends made home movies, practiced being space explorers, and plotted space projects. Joost went to MIT for undergraduate studies in bio–electrical engineering and recently finished his graduate degree at the MIT Sloan School of Management looking at how labs are run, how research themes emerge, and how new technologies are commercialized.Saul Griffith grew up in Australia and his earliest memories of inventing things were of making grappling hooks for climbing trees and buildings. His childhood adventures included making his own rocket–powered toy cars, kites, and enormous puppets. He kept a diary of drawings of his inventions as a kid that included fantastic monorails and airplanes shaped like manta–rays. Saul ended up studying materials science—the structure of the materials we use every day—before going on to MIT to do a PhD in building self–replicating machines and a theory for folding 3–dimensional objects. He now works at Squid Labs in California inventing cool new things for making the world a better place. He still builds kites, they are just much, much bigger now.

Next, go to the convinience store and buy a whole bunch of smokes. Then, go stand one pace away from entering your mansion.
