MacBook Pro/MacBook Pro 2010?

OK, I am in the market for my first laptop.        My family has been on a Gateway running Windows XP Home Edition since 2002. I have two siblings and a mother who is a pre-k teacher (uses this computer 24/7 for lesson plans). I hardly get anytime on this thing. I am looking at a 15" MacBook Pro. I am very cautious with my money and with college around the corner, I want a computer that will last. If anyone who happens to own one could tell me the pros and cons of the unit it would be greatly appreciated.      Another question: does anyone know anything about an early 2010 MacBook Pro release? If so would waiting for the next update be worth the wait?

15" Macbook Pro

Hello everyone,          I am in the market for my first laptop. Ive been researching for about two years now and Im ready to make a purchase. My research has lead me to the 15" MacBook Pro. I am very cautious with my money and I want to make sure my hard earned money goes into a good investment. I really like it just from looking at it online. Im a pretty hardcore computer nerd and have taken up the title of the  IT manager of my house. I need a good computer.  From the few people ive talked to Ive only heard good things about the unit. Is there anyone out there, who owns one, tell me its Pros and Cons? It would be greatly appreciated!

macbook pro wont power up?

Question by dlangan    |  last reply

Camera or MacBook?

Ok. So my birthday is coming up, and I want to get either a Nikon D3100 or a MacBook Air/Pro. I really can't decide which one I want more. I love photography and I don't have a DSLR, but I would also love a MacBook and I would probably use it quite a lot. I do already have a desktop, but I also have a point-and-shoot. I really need your help on which one I should get. Thank you in advance.

Re-anodizing a macbook pro? Answered

I am getting an old macbook pro in the mail soon and am going to have to pretty much tear it down completely to repair it. I have seen a few guides on anodizing aluminum, and was wondering if maybe, possibly I would be able to anodize my macbook to a different color! Would this require de-anodizing the aluminum? (the model is a late 08 macbook, so I dont know if that is a powder coated one).  It would be awesome If I could color it a nice matte black (my preferred color) Has anyone attempted doing something like this before? I have some scrap brushed aluminum to practice on.. would that work? I know this could be easily accomplished with a black case... but I kind of want to go a bit further than that...

Macbook Pro and Following Heartbreak

I have a problem and the people on Instructables are so smart I am hoping someone can advise me.   A year ago I used my Macbook Pro in my kitchen and happened to leave it on the kitchen table over night. I never did this before.  We had a huge storm that night and my roof leaked.  I had it repaired following Hurricane Ike and it had been fine but then something happened (I got it fixed - kind of like locking the gate after the cows get out)  and that one night was the only time I ever left my computer there or had a roof leak that was pretty bad and covered my entire table with water. When I saw my table and computer I thought I would fall out!  I picked up the computer and water ran out of it!  I didn't know then to take the battery out and let it dry out completely and I don't know if it would have worked anyway.  I whined for a day or two and then bought a new Macbook Pro.  Now I can get it to power up and it seems like it is working but there is no display. First I wonder is there a way to get that computer to work again.....Second - Is there a way to recover my videos and pictures even if that computer never works again so I can have the pictures of my best friend who recently passed away and have the pictures and videos of the wildlife I love to photograph? I am a principal so I take a lot of pictures and videos at school and make videos for students and staff.  Previously I was the assistant principal and my best friend was my principal and I have a lot of video and pictures of all the fun stuff we used to do just on off time or at school.  My best friend and principal ended up with a brain tumor and passed away a few months ago. She was young and vibrant and larger than life. The staff I inherited from her would love to see some of our videos and pictures from the days when she was healthy and our principal.  It really bothers me that I can't get my videos and pictures for both reasons, the loss of the videos that would remind me and my staff of fun times with my friend at school and because of the animal videos I feel I have lost that I would love to be able to see and use again.I spend my free time making videos and doing animal photography. I have 10 game cameras set up on my property in East Texas and I love to watch the animals.  All of my previous pictures, video, etc....is on that hard drive. I removed it and I can save to it but I can not open up the picture and videos on it. The new Macbook has updated software and I have not been able to open up iPhoto, IMovie, or IDVD and get my my pictures and videos from it.    I really wish I could get those images and videos back.   I now have that hard drive in a hard case to be used as an external hard drive.   If you read all of this, Thank you! If you have any helpful ideas I would love to hear them.  If you have any interest in the type of videos I make feel free to visit my Youtube channel at FoxysMyGirl@youtube.com  Foxy was my first great dane and I was crazy in love with that dog hence the username!   Thank you! Amy

MacBook Pro Case fix-up

So, I made this case last year in July-ish, It used to be a Speck(™) Fitted Case. The old fabric was white plaid but it was getting discolored, so I decided to be creative and take an old shirt of mine that didn't fit and cut it to the shape of the MacBook Pro case. I then peeled off the old fabric and placed the shirt on the case, and I bought Fabric Spray Glue from Michaels and sprayed the shirt till it stayed immobile and flat to the case. I then used a razor to cut off tattered pieces but now the glue wears off on the edges and the fabric isn't as stretchy anymore because I cut so much off the shirt.  I was wondering if anyone had any good tips for a nice "guy-styled" trim to put around the case to cover up the annoying saggy fabric? The material on this case already has black studs all over.

Buying a new macbook next week, shall i get the Macbook 13" or the Macbook Pro 13"? Answered

Hello guys! So i'm buying a new macbook coming next week (next week just in case apple wants to upgrade the core to an i5, in the pro, or add an anti-glare or hi-res upgrade...they've upgraded before mid-cycle, and i dont mind waiting till monday :) ). just so you know my background: i'll be entering the physics carreer later this year at the university.  I'm torn between buying a white macbook, or a macbook pro 13". Money is not a problem, but the most i can get is the macbook pro with a 500GB hdd, 2,4GHz, 4GB RAM. Should i get the cheaper or the pro? i mean, seeing how they're so much alike, same core 2 duo, same graphics card, is shelling out the extra cash worth it? Thanks for your help :)

How do I stream movies from iMac to Macbook Pro wirelessly, without buying any software?

I'm aware you can use the built-in file sharing system, but I've encountered problems with that. Yet I have no problems streaming 720p movies wireless to my PS3 with Vuze. Anyone know of any free software? All I'm aware of is "Orb". And obviously I'm looking for a Mac-to-Mac way to do this.

Good dead Macbook Pro Instructable ideas? Answered

Look, I am just not handy and practical minded but I am looking for good ideas? I have an old Macbook Pro that I am using for spares and one thing I would like to do is to make use of the the casing, (base and broken screen) and it would be great to use it for something practical and stylish, so any ideas? I wondered about the practicality of somehow making it into a speaker system for starters, but no idea how to do it! So come on folks, get your creative minds round it and come up with some fantastic ideas.

Logging out and logging back in doesn't help because finding the particular instructable becomes difficult. Can I Turn My Old Macbook Into a DIY Mac Pro Tower?

Preface/Background: I am fairly new to DIY tech projects. I have built two HTPCs, but I doubt that really counts. It does, however, give me a basic idea of how all of the components go together. I'm not terribly savvy when it comes to specs of computer components. I have an '08 Macbook that has just been gathering dust since I upgraded ~1 year ago. Recently, my side job as a freelancer (graphic design & video) has been picking up. My new machine is pretty powerful, but the time it takes to get my laptop setup with all of my peripherals is starting to get old. There are also times when I crave some extra speed & I often have to stop working in the middle of a project to clear up disk space or set up an external drive. I remembered seeing a project where Mosburn converted his macbook into a Mac Mini on Gizmodo a few years ago, which got me excited. It was written in 2008, and may be a little dated. I'm looking to do a similar project, but I'm not really looking for size/design. I'm looking for POWER! The Macbook in question is version 4,1. As I said, looks aren't a big issue for me (nor size). I now have an extra room in my house and it is going to be set up as an office. Everything still works on the laptop, although the battery no longer holds a charge. I initially planned to sell it, but with the dead battery and some cosmetic damage, I could only get about $200 for it. I think this project would be more valuable to me than that. Project Goals: -Use as much of my existing laptop as possible (the whole buffalo) -Use a case that allows upgrades (more memory, more drives) -Increase memory (current: 4 | desired:16+) -Increase disk space (current: 80gb | desired: 2tb+) -At least 1 Solid State I know the Mac OS is pretty picky when it comes to components, so the initial question is: Will the system accept my desired spec upgrades? I know that I have to use compatible brands, I just want to make sure there isn't some sort of "maximum" hard coded. Will I be able to use both Solid State and Disk drives? I would like to get a smaller Solid State as a primary, and a couple of large disk drives for storage and scratching. I may get a dock so I can quickly switch drives that are strictly storage, but for now I just want a couple TBs inside. Also, would you suggest using the existing power cable? Or would it be benificial to swap in a new power supply? I'm not sure how intensive that might be, but I'm guessing a few more drives will require it. I think it is safe to assume that I will need to use some advanced DIY techniques, as far as my experience goes. As I stated before, I've built a few PCs before, but these were all fairly simple. Connecting components to the motherboard were as easy as plugging them in. I've done a (very) small amount of soldering before on other DIYs, but they were all done on fairly big parts and precision was not an issue. If soldering might be needed, I will need some help with this as well. I am hoping there are some guides out there to help me understand what goes where on my particular motherboard. I'm also a little worried that I may have to do some cutting (as done in the project linked above). Hopefully the fact that I don't need a small case, I won't have to deal with that. I plan on buying a high res screen to use with this machine, but I'm not sure what I plan to do with the existing LCD yet. I'm not sure how much I might be able to sell it for, or how much it might cost to buy a stand to mount it with. It is a pretty nice screen, but it's long before the time of the Retina display, so it may not be worth messing with. If anyone has any suggestions for what approach to take, or a link to an existing guide, please share them below. Another fear I have is that the variations in MacBook models may make finding an applicable and useful guide more difficult. Another note: Cost isn't really an issue. I hope to first accomplish this project using mostly the materials at hand - worrying about upgrading my specs later. If this is possible, the only expenses should be a new case, a few cables, and possibly a new power supply. I'd like to preemptively thank anyone who might offer help. I've been wanting to make a move to tech DIY for years and this project seems to be a great starting point. I hope this leads to many more and that I can soon be a helpful contributor here as well.

Is it possible to virtually install from recovery discs?

I have a new macbook pro that comes preinstalled with snow leopard. Upon digging in the attic, my brother found mac os 9 and the recovery discs for my dad's macbook pro (the old model, 2006, preinstalled with tiger). I was curious if there was a way to virtually install tiger (like using virtualbox). The reason I want this is because I want the classic environment to play some old games, and I tried Sheep Shaver for mac os 9, but it crashed when I tried to play the game. From what I understand, tiger was the last to support the classic environment.

hacking a tablet

Hey everyone. I am shopping for a wacom tablet to use a stylus to ease photo editing, for which I use a macbook pro. there are google tablets and other off brand tablets that have interactive screens for less than the wacom tablets. so, how could I get one of these devices to essentially do what the wacom tablet does, with all the benefits of the tablet itself- to aid my digital photography? It seems that it would be advantageous to just make use of the tablet (weather it be an ipad google tab or coby tablet) so I can plug my 50 d into it to display photos to people, instead of carrying around an irreplaceable macbook pro. And when Im editing at home, using a stylus to edit on the pad like you would with the plastic no screen wacoms. it seems you could set up as many hotkeys as you would want on the screen and  have the benefit of working accurately inside the photo, too. if this is a feasible idea , please, tell me how to hack it! or make it work. maybe have something that other photogs would use , too... much respect to my community, Scott Scottedwards33@gmail.com

I am also going to get an iPhone now that it has the location stuff in Google maps. I still wish it had GPS though. Also, with the Time Capsule announced there won't be as much need for an application that a friend and I made to do the exact same thing with any network drive. Check it out here, iTimemachine. We also have a couple other apps so look at those too!

Where can I (legally) get Photoshop CS2 for OSX?

My sister has a four-year-old MacBook (OSX, PS CS2 installed) with cracked hinges, and she's looking at getting a new computer before this piece of plastic crap falls apart completely. Currently looking at a low-end MacBook Pro, but that's not the question. She's a part-time professional photographer, and needs Photoshop. She currently has CS2 but due to certain circumstances can't install it on another computer. Is there still a place to buy CS2 at an appropriate old-software discount? CS5 is way out of price range, and she's familiar with and likes CS2, so no reason for anything else. Oh, and no GIMP. I've asked.

I need to recharge Li-Ion cells w/ undervoltage lockout?

I have 2 Apple A1175 macbook batteries that will not charge, regardless of what I have done to the computer or the battery. I believe that this is due to the batteries having sat for much too long, and eventually the cells got depleted (causing what i believe is undervoltage lockout on the charge controller circuit). I believe I can get these batteries functional again by charging the cells again. Thing is, I don't want to take apart the batteries to charge each cell individually. Is there a way to somehow trick the charge controller into letting current through the batteries? I read somewhere that a 5-15v pulse will do it, but I am not sure if that is true... Any pinouts for the battery would be helpful as I have not been able to find a pinout for them at all. Again they are apple A1175 batteries (from the old bulky aluminum 15 inch macbook pros) Thanks! Edit: I also understand (mostly) the hazards of li-ion technology. I understand they are extremely hazardous under an uncontrolled charge condition. I also understand that by doing this, they might blow up in my face entirely, causing burns and possibly a fire.

How many Macbook(pro)s does the Instrucatable community need to buy to make the new ad worthwhile?

I've always wondered about the true effectiveness of online advertisements. Despite how intrusive they may be, I've never used them to shop or be inspired to shop. Call me crazy because I don't define my needs based on the companies that fulfill them. For an ad like the new "greenest family of laptops" on the front page, how many does Apple really need to sell to break even on the ad? I'm guessing not many.
