If an electro magnet is suspending something in an vacuum environment, will it act as a medium? (Will sound waves be able to pass through the magnetic field?) Thanks

I'm planning on setting up a kind of utility rack in the kitchen, and the top of the microwave is the most convenient location. I was planning on using neo magnets to hold it all in place, but does anyone have any idea if they'll affect the magnetron?

Couldn't, with well position magnets, create an orbit around a central magnet? Almost like perpetual motion? I've been playing around with magnets lately, and I've gotten magnets to do 2 full revolutions around other magnets before coliding. Is it possible?

I have a motor out of an waxer/buffer and I was wondering what improvements neodymium magnets would be. I have a couple plans for this motor, the first being for a temporary ball mill, and the second for a generator. I am pretty sure the neodymium would be good for a generator, but what about a motor. I am also wondering what magnets to get. Should the north pole be the outside, south pole be the outside, should it be magnetized thru circumference, magnetized through thickness, or south on one side and north on the other.

Hi y'all! I am wondering if it is possible to focus magnetism? Like if you have a powerful electromagnet with a less powerful electromagnet wrapped around it. Then if both are turned on, the small one will focus the larger one creating a straight electromagnetic field and making like a "electromagnetic laser". Thanks, joespicnictables

Cutting open transformers (you might call it an adapter, or charger) yields a good quantity of re-usable magnet wire. Motors don't seem to be a very good source, since the windings on those seem to be saturated in varnish to glue em together. Apparently, vibration is more of an issue in the motors, so they make the windings solid. This might be different in little hobby motors. Dunno.

Hi, I've never seen a community so welcoming and intuitive than the instructables community, so I decided this website is the best place to ask my question. I'm sure there is someone hidden deep within the fathoms of instructables that is versed in the matter of magnetic field redirection. I'm working on a project that I will post an 'ible of, (truly wireless speakers ;)) but I need some method of redirecting a magnetic field so it doesn't interfere with the speakers. I have heard of some methods, i.e. Mu metals, MagnetShield, but these are not easy to come by, especially in the UK. I have considered ordering from the manufacturer, but I am not willing to pay the exorbitant shipping costs. I would firstly like to know if such a material exists, or if alternative/better/cheaper methods are available, secondly, whether or not it can be procured in the UK, and if so, where, and thirdly, proper application of such a material. I have done lots of research into the matter, but have been left fruitless. I'm sure someone can help. Merry Christmas, icyseptember

Can an electro magnet have more gauss than a neodymium of the same size? I was just thinking about robots and advanced prosthetics. One issue with them is they require rather bulky motors to get the lifting and holding capacity we often require. So if power wasn't an issue and you could make a small elecro magnet that has more gauss/a stronger magnetic field than a neodymium magnet. Than we could make strong and smaller motors. Just a thought. Discuss!

I am trying to find a practical way to build a device to convert magnetic energy into electrical energy, some kind of generator or other device, there are several ways in which this might work in theory but actually building the device would be more difficult to figure out.

I learned a couple of years ago about a motor developed by Nikolai Tesla that operates using neodymium magnets. If anyone has any information about this or other similar motors, please post information and help to save the earth from the evils of oil!

You'd paint your nails and then put them near the magnet, which would create a starburst pattern by attracting and repelling charged pigments. Is it just me or could this be done with a pinch of iron oxide powder in any nail polish?

I know I'm probably going to sound like an idiot for asking, but can magnet wire release any toxic fumes when heated? I made a speaker using a magnet-wire coil and a neo-magnet, and when I plug it into the amp, I realized the coil gets very hot. I was expecting this, for I've used a number of coils in other projects. There is an odor, no doubt, that comes from every coil I've used when making an electromagnet. Sure, the smell may come from the iron nail being heated, but I always associate the smell with the coil. I'm not willing to smell this speaker, however. So, is there any risks that come from the heating of magnet wire? The coil gets hot after about a minute of run-time, but I'd like to be able to run through an entire album of music (an hour?) if possible. Thanks!

Hey guys!I just bought myself a Ikea PS laptop workstation. I thought it was heavy enough to stand on its own, turns out it isn't. I don't want to drill holes on the wall, I thought about using magnets to give balance to it.Questions are:- can I do that? I mean, magnets to hold a metal structure plus using that to hold electronics such as laptop, DS, camera, mobile etc.- in case I can, which sort of magnets should I buy? The open lid on the Ikea PS supports up to 25kg/55lb, plus 15kg/32lb from the PS itself. There will be support underneath to hold the weight (thought about using glass jars, grouping three on each side, totaling six), so the magnets will mostly add balance to the structure, and not hold its entire weight.Thanks a bunch for taking the time to read this! I was playing around with some of my 1/8in. NeFeBr (or is it NeBrFe?) magnets leftover from the challenge. Was using them to find screws on my flip phone. I noticed that when I put it at the "joint" of the two halves, the screen went dark. Turns out it thought I shut my phone. This was just a little odd tidbit that I wanted to share, that has potental. But, it isn't an instructable, so I just posted it.

Hi, 1st post hope you can help! I'm trying to find a way of getting analog data (from an exercise bike) and store it onto a computer in a text file so I can manipulate it and work out averages etc. I thought of having a magnetic switch on the pedal so that everytime the pedal rotates I can store the time thus giving me the speed. Does anyone know if such a cable already exists or if not how to go about creating one? Also if anyone has a better way of getting the data I'd love to hear from you. Many thanks Adam

Hello there instuctables, I need your help with a project i am attempting, i am in the process of making a maglev tram and i have a couple questions i need help with? 1. I have a simple circuit for a linear motor that i understand to the most part but i need help with finding an electromagnet to use / make, it needs to run on batteries and obviously the main concern here is weight and stability so the smaller the better but still needs to be strong enough to propel the tram along the track so i suppose my real question is what ammount of winding, resistance and core material would be suitable for whatever voltage i could provide! 2. Next i suppose what way round should i place the magnets, should i place many electromagnets on the rail with sensorsand permanent magnets on the tram, or should i have a powered electromagnet on the tram and permanent magnets on the track? 3. Also what hall sensor should i use to detect the magnetic fields, unipolar switches or ratiometric sensors? 4. And finally control, how would i control the motion of the tram i.e. speed and direction? Id like to thank you all in advance for any help you could provide and i hope my description is accurate enough!! many regards, Scott Photo of simple linear motor circuit (img.1) When the hall sensor (switch) senses a pole of a magnet, it activates the transistor, in turn magnetising the relay and causing the current in the electromagnet (motor) to run one direction, then as the opposite pole is detected the relay de-magnetises and reverses the current thus reversing the pole on the electromagnet! This is designed so that with permanent magnets on the track in an alternating fashion of poles (nsnsns) the tram is either pushed or pulled along the track!

So here it is:Here is a link to my upublished instructable:Magnetically Propelled BicycleI came up with this two weeks ago while I was day dreaming about levitation and magnets.The idea is that one stationary magnet set up on the middle of a bicycle negative facing front, can push two magnets bolted together, each facing negative, with an axle running through them and wheels on opposite sides. So when the stationary magnet'ss power is increased, the two magnets in front will be pushed, thus rotating the axle where the wheels are attached, adn obviously the wheels are turned.I say "when the power is increased" because hopefully an electro magnet can be used. I am not sure, but I think an electromagnet can be hooked up to a car battery, and then with some control device, more electricity can be sent to the magnet, possibly increasing the power ( I don't know much about this stuff so help me out here.Look at the schematics for all of the anatomy.I have not figured the turning system out completely, in the intro picture you may see that the turning wheel is connected to the rear by a bar ( In the way I believe it may work there will be two bars side by side, I can't really explain it yet). That is how I plan the turning to the controlled.If you have any ideas for this project, add a comment. I have not made this yet and am still creating it.Please, do not steal my idea, I am only 14 and just started inventing. I have no idea how the patenting system works and I do not have the money for it.I would also like to know more about electromagnets, how they work and where to buy them. Hi! I am setting up a levitation system and need to estimate the amount of voltage and current that is needed for a 2" dia. coil to produce 4800 Gauss. I don't have any restrictions/requirements on the core, number of turns, etc as long as it would produce 4800 Gauss with a 2" diameter. How can this be calculated? (I have spent a lot of time googling for such information, but I am pretty confused and didn't find how to calculate this) Thanks!

Wanted to try how far the magnetic field of my new stirrer is reaching and observes something weird...If you have a normal stirring rod in a beaker then these things do excatly what they are supposed to.Even if you try to add the rodd to an empty beaker while the stirrer is already running.The first option gives you a nice rotation, the later often just some jumping and bouncing rod.Fun fact though: Inside a stirrer rotates a magnet and the rod is just a steel bar enclosed in polyethylen or teflon.Trying to make a stirring rod roll around the center instead of rotating is next to impossible - it always tries to use the max binding force and centers itself.So I tried different things for the end goal of designing a stand up stirring twoer instead.You know, like these fancy ones found in huge water towers to agitate the water.I found a small steel ball with two magnets attached quite interesting but an accident made me wonder...For some reason I did not turn the stirrer fully off when searching my little box of goodies for new stuff to try.A small spring for some motor bushes landed on the stirrer...And although it moved dead center it did not spin at all.A slight vibration was all I could see.First weird behaviur happen when I tried to move the spring around to check why it is not spinning.Pushing it a bit lengthwise suddenly made it spin!A bit of fiddling a trying showed it works best slightly off center to the magnet with one end while sitting on the radius.The spring rotated like a horizontal drill but in no relation to the stirring speed.Second and even weirder things happened when the spring slipped through my fingers.It started to roll around the center of the plate but in the opposite direction to the magnets rotattion!An increase in speed made it roll faster until the g forces made it fly off the plate.If you have a magnetic stirrer then try it out one day.I have a few theories why the spring starts to rotate or roll but none make fully sense.Can try to take a video for those with no stirrer but for the fun of it it might be good to just mount a magnet on a motor and try LOL

Im going to try to keep this short. So a friend and I are both sophomores at our highschool and we are both in chemistry (which is a higher level science) and i built a coilgun for last years project and attempted to build a PWM driven one this year. My friend and I want to build a rather large coilgun using either 10 microwave oven caps or close to 40 or 50 caps from computer power supplies. What i need help on is whether we should use the microwave caps which are high voltage but low capacitance or the power supply caps which are 200 volts and around 500 micro farads. I also need help on what wire to use for my coil and how many turns for the coil. i would like help with a coil for each cap size. We are planning on using either a 3millimeter by 5 centimeter long steel rod or a quarter inch bolt. our goal is to at least shoot it through the wall of the physics classroom and maybe through the door of a car. anything helps. During a recent stay I showed my granddaughter (8) how to display magnetic lines of force with iron filings. She asked me a question I couldn't really answer so I will ask the combined wisdom (mainly because I can't find an answer on the internet in general) Her question: The iron filings line up along the lines of magnetic force - Why are there gaps between the lines? My answer: My initial response is that the iron filings become magnetic and so repel each other so they form up in the lines we see because they are quite big but the magnetic lines of force are either much closer together or one continuous "beam" Any insight?
