Minimalist marine battery dolly? Answered

Hi. Been lugging around a 38 lb. marine battery (9" x 9" x 5.5") that cannot be stored in the kayak.  I hate walking long distances with it. Need something like a compact luggage cart, but very minimalist.  Would like to store the carrier with the battery while on the water, in the kayak storage well.  That way it is readily accessible. Thinking just a 1/4" plywood "L" shape that hug the battery bottom and back. I cannot think of how to make the "L" joint (where 2 pieces come together) strong. Also, need suggestion for a (telescopic?) removable handle. Do I use an axle?  Thanks much for any suggestions.  This will be a big help!

Waterproof background material for photographing marine specimens?

A bit of background: I'm working on improving the quality of photos that get passed my way.  A little bit of effort on the part of the photographers could save me countless photoshop hours on my end and likely preserve more useful information in the process!  I'm hoping the DIY photographers out there might have some advice. The details: Photos are of marine creatures (therefore the subjects are necessarily wet and probably muddy!), taken at-sea (so the material needs to be fairly easy to pack up).  Can anyone suggest a material/product that is waterproof (gets wiped/cleaned between specimens) and is flat (not shiny)?  Both black and white will be needed.  I've used plexiglass but get a lot of glare, and one cruise used a piece of black cloth with the kind of result you see in the photo.  Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Military advice wanted, how to improve chances of getting the B4 ASI enlisting as a 11X/B?

I've wanted to acquire the training of a Marine Scout Sniper for a while, but decided against it. I read and found out that me getting a chance for Sniper School were pretty small, and that I'd rather not spend a majority of my military career on a boat with the Navy. (No offense intended to either the Navy or Marine Corp.) Recently, I discovered the Army offers something similar. (ASI B4) Even If I wasn't able to get that training, I would still (probably) be Infantry, which isn't half bad. How does Marine Basic differ from Army Basic? How does Marine Sniper School differ from the Army School? Are they the same? How many schools are available for military use in the US? What is the washout rate for the Benning School? What is the psych evaluation like? How is GT score (I assume from the ASVAB,) calculated? Is there a certain AIT I would have to pass to be eligible for Sniper School?

How do I charge two marine cycle batteries at 24v? Answered

Hello, I've built a mobile stereo ice cream cart that I have posted here on instructables. https://www.instructables.com/answers/Got-any-cool-ideas-for-our-Arduino-run-LED-dance-f/ We've been having a hard time with our SLA batteries. We have two 12v banks of three 7.2 sla batteries, run in series to make 24v. (six batteries total) We then use a car charger on trickle to charge the two banks separately. This is a pain, and the cells have been swelling. We desire a bit more battery life. (currently at about 6 hours) and simpler charging. My thought is two small marine cycle batteries (maybe 40 Amp/hrs each) and some sort of 24 volt charger. Would this work? Is there a better way to go?  Extra Points for Light, Cheap and Simple. Thanks so much! Tor BTW totally open to a battery lecture, or to get pointed to a good read. I feel like I need to get schooled.

New Novel Idea- Stockholm Syndrome.

After years of writer's block over a mediocre novel idea (military special forces team), of which I only have half a chapter done, I decided to scrap it and start anew. My old idea was thought up when I was around 12, so of course it didn't pan out. I want to know what you think of my knew idea:Title:Stockholm Syndrome.Story outline:After a successful recovery mission (of a hostage), the evacuation copter is shot down after pickup. All but a few are dead. One marine watches in horror as the insurgents that shot them down move in and execute the wounded. He is last, the barrel of a gun pressed against his head. The executioner is about to pull the trigger when the insurgent leader orders him to stop, he apparently sees something in this marine. The marine is taken prisoner instead. After several years of imprisonment, the captured marine comes down with Stockholm Syndrome (These men saved his life, they could have killed him like the rest). He rises through the insurgent's ranks, committing brutal war crimes along the way, and eventually becomes their leader. He then goes on to orchestrate a major (successful) attack on the U.S. First or third person? I'm thinking first.

60m floating sea conveyor as customer transportation to/from a deck 30m offshore. Can anyone give me some advice pls?

The aim of this creation is to assist weak/tired swimmers.  The platform (used for watersports) is quite far from shore (30m) and even with lifejackets I don't want anyone getting in trouble or drifting off.  I do have a boat for emergencies but it's too small for regular use   Anyway, I was watching a ski lift and thought that the principle should be applicable (in theory!) to my problem. So far (not very!) I thought I could use waxed nylon rope with floats placed approx every 1.5/2m for people to hang onto - the bit I have no idea about is how to get it all around the mechanisms which power it ( "mechanisms" because I can't remember the names, I really am a beginner so pls go slow!).  Also a bit vague re marine engineering considerations (type of materials etc) and power.  I know I haven't got very far but someone could pls lend me a bit of their brain it would be much appreciated.  Simple and not massively expensive would be a big relief! Thanks again for reading this,Kate

Power a trailer with a generator connected to the axle? Answered

I just rewired the family's "camping trailer" and the next project that I have to tackle is power. Don't ask why we need a bunch of power when camping, it makes stuff more fun. Anyhow two of the ideas my dad and I have are theoretically easy. The first one is something that is really simple, just some solar cells. However my initial  thought is that it may not be enough to power the car/marine batteries on the trailer in a manageable amount of time (with a small budget). The second idea is to connect a generator head(s) to the axle of the trailer, so whenever we are driving the trailer (often for about an hour on the highway) the batteries are charging My questions are, what type of generator heads (if that is what I want) should I use? What type of gearing would I need? Could this be worked on a humble budget? Would this be practical for charging car/marine batteries? Thanks, Jake J

Black Holes aren’t Black they are Gray?

Ok so 40 years ago Stephen Hawking came up with the theory of Black holes and today they are not black but gray. It turns out that the black holes Hawking wrote about in 1974 — those places in the space-time continuum that can devour galaxies and even trap light forever — may not exist in the way that he proposed decades ago. So I read the paper. http://arxiv.org/pdf/1401.5761v1.pdf I found it a bit dry compared to A Brief History of Time but that is the life of a paper. I have always believed a theory is just that and no more, prone to evolve or be disproved with the advent of new theories and facts. After all it is just a theory and not a fact even though many of these theories enable us to the most amazing things. Which reminds me of a joke. A Canadian fisherman was down south fly fishing with an American fisherman that happen to be a marine biologist. Soon the Canadian fisherman caught a one pound brook trout and stated it was just a baby and threw it back. The American marine biologist not objecting to catch and release, objected to the Canadian calling a one pound Salvelinus fontinalis a baby. He explained to the Canadian fisherman that the Salvelinus fontinalis is genetically unable to grow larger than one pound. The Canadian fisherman retorted I catch five pounders in the Boyne River all the time and that was just a baby where he comes from. The American marine biologist objected to the Canadian calling a one pound Salvelinus fontinalis a baby. Again he explained to the Canadian fisherman that the Salvelinus fontinalis is genetically unable to grow larger than one pound. Not wanting to argue the Canadian fisherman let the subject lye and spent the rest of the day fishing throwing their catch back. At the end of the day they exchanged addresses and parted friends. A month later the American marine biologist received a parcel in the mail in it was a frozen five pound brook trout, distraught he began to write the Canadian fisherman a letter. “Dear Mr. Fuddel Duddel Thank you for the five pound specimen of the Salvelinus fontinalis, and thank you very much for ruining perfectly good science with a fact. Sincerely John Doe”

Outdoor Pool Table?

There are lots of used pool tables for sale for under $250. Any ideas for how to convert them for outdoor use? I'm thinking of just spraying the whole thing, except the felt, with a few coats of marine varnish. Then just keeping it covered. I live in the NW and of course it's mostly drizzly around here in the winter time. The big thing is keeping expansion and contraction to a minimum and sealing the wood. This doesn't have to be tournament grade, just something to entertain the kids for a few years.

When a load is rated at 12 volts and hooked up to a 12 volt battery, does it consume all 12 volts?

This may seem like a very dumb question but I took electronics two years ago as a high schooler and cannot seem to remember much about it. So I have a circuit that has a bilge pump hooked up in series with a 12 volt battery. The bilge pump says 12 volts, I know that that means it must have a 12 volt supply, but if I hooked it up with a 12 volt battery, would there be any left over volts to say, power a small light? Wood varnish questions

I want to varnish this birch plywood platform to keep it as waterproof and UV resistant as possible but also keep it as close to it's original pale birch colour as possible. i've never varnished anything before so i've been googling for answers and i'm getting some conflicting information, i've been looking at different clear outdoor varnishes and most claim to protect against UV light and not leave a yellow tint but most reviews say otherwise and some general varnishing info articles claim that clear varnish can't protect against UV at all and i'd need a dark stain which i really don't want. so what can i do to protect the wood against the elements and maintain the colour as much as possible? can i combine varnish with other stuff? i found some clear 'marine varnish' is this heavier duty than normal wood varnish or something?is there an alternative to varnish that will have a similar effect?if i need to modify the platform later, cutting bits out or drilling new holes is it ok to just apply another layer of varnish to reseal it or will it need preparing in some way or some additional step?

3D Print Workshop at a library

We've had a 3D printer at our library for about 6 months now. We would love to offer workshops on how to use software like Tinkercad or 123D to create your own designs. We are currently looking for someone to lead the workshop. Any ideas where we could connect with someone? We are located in Marin County, right next to San Francisco: http://www.beltiblibrary.org/ Many thanks for any suggestions on forums, people to reach out to or even workshop ideas.

Worlds Smallest Saltwater Reef Aquarium

These are aged systems that keep myriad coral reef organisms alive using a delicate balance of natural materials and very reduced manmade gear. They are like ecospheres, but to the 20th power. Compared to an advanced reef aquarium they are just as stable due to design features, and they bring marine science study into the home in a practical manner. There are no others in the world like these designs and they are easy to build but expensive to build as well. I hope you enjoy my invention now posted as an instructible http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XOsitYhihc

Need help hooking up a speaker

I made a mistake when ordering some speakers for a project and ended up with specialty marine speakers. They only came with the speakers themselves and some red/black wires that plug into the back. They're still good so I'd like to get them set up but I have no idea how and no experience with wiring electronics. Can somebody help me figure out how to convert these into regular speakers with a wall plug and audio jack? As for the specs: 200w peak power and 4 ohm impedance. Any help appreciated.
