I need some help in school. today, we had an exam. our teacher did a very bad job explaining the subject matter, and i could barley hear her over everyone talking. the manual i have for math did not explain anything either. anyhow, i probably didnt do too well on the exam.what should i tell my parents? they have a hard time believing that the teacher is at fault too. any help?

Calculator Programs for Math

I've been working on some programs for my calculator recently and have decided to share them. I made these myself from scratch. If you want to modify go ahead just credit me. Don't sell them. And don't use them in math class if your teacher says not to. The programs are a follows: a quadratic formula solver, parabola solver, slope of a linear equation finder, and y-intercept finder. The programs work on TI-83's and TI-84's. If you have questions on how to use them or how to put them on your calculator please leave a comment!

I need a detailed method of doing, and double checking Algebraic Quadratic equations? Answered

What I lacked in school, over 30 years ago, was a backbone to ask the teacher what he meant, but his hurried learn this style of teaching. What I need now, is something I have having trouble getting, even from any of the several books on the subject I have, that claim to make it simple: that is, I need both the methodology of doing the equations, and I need to know how and why they work, so I can work out when I have done something wrong.

Does anyone have any info or resources that can help me with ODE's and Frobenius' theorem?

I'm studying Frobenius' theorem in school and am having trouble understanding my foreign teacher. His method differs from the one in the book, and I'm having trouble with that too. Most of the examples I've found on the net have been special cases like Bessel's equations or ones that can be solved with Fuch's theorem. (series solutions about an ordinary point, within a radius of convergence) What I'm having trouble with is EQ's that involve series solutions about regular singular points I plan on writing an instructable to decipher how to do this once I understand it better (teaching others helps me learn much faster) so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone want a really enjoyable Maths problem I've been thinking about for days?

Here is it: Prove that (Xn): (any) n Xn=1+1/1!+1/2!+1/3!.....+1/n! converges and lim(Xn)=lim(Yn), where                     n Yn=(1+1/n) ( (any) is upside down A, n in the end is power) I know asking homework-based questions is unethical, but I've been doing it for 2 weeks and my teacher tells me it is very enjoyable... Any ideas?

Why do i solve the sum in this way (mathematics)?

The sum is as given below: "There are two cars A and B.They start from the same point at the same time and travel in a circular path .Car A can complete one round in 18 minutes whereas car B can complete the round in 16 minutes. After how much time will they meet?"   my maths teacher told me to take the LCM(least common multiple) of their respective completion times of a round. Can anybody please explain to me as to why i should take the LCM. Also i would be greatful  if you could explain it simply.Cheerio.

Pi Calculator?

Hello all. I was at school this one day, and I asked some stupid question about Pi to my math teacher. He eventually told the class about how, when he was in school, the school got a computer, and hired a programmer to program it to calculate Pi. And it just kept on spitting out numbers. And it never stopped. NEVER! So, he would come in and look every day to see if it had figured out Pi. And all through his schooling, it didnt. I was just wondering, first of all, how would you make a program that keeps on spitting out numbers (pi) and NEVER stops? I mean, I have yet to see anything that can actually keep on calculating and NEVER EVER stop. Secondly, is there a program (.exe) that will do that? Just a simple command window that spits out numbers.. 3.14159 is what i know.. and i dont know if thats ever right! :P Anyway, I basically want something like what I described. I will put it on this old laptop I have and let it run. Probably under my desk or something. So.. yeah. Now, REPLY!! :) THANKS! :) :D :P :D :) :D :P :)

Two or three of my six grand kids have the potential to be DefCon Kids now what ?

So I have access to six young minds by helping my wife and retired teacher to sit with them 4 days a week. Four I drive to school while the parents (my children) earn a living.  Two are easily motivated and do well with Legos.  One likes robots, they all do math window games. I teach chess and play when thy want ( no Queen or rooks for me ) Programming is my artistic expression but I would push too hard and blow them away. What low level intros can be a leap into DefCon Kid status that you know worked well in your experiences ?

My idiotic dad doesn't think my grades are good or at least above average. What do you think?

So yeah, I got expelled from school on the last week, but the school decided to be nice and give me my report card. I personally think I did OK, some of my friends and teachers even praised me for it, but my perfectionist father lashed his anger at me to no end. Check these out:(Note: The passing is 2 out of 6, my school's standards aren't really that high)English: 5 out of 6Math: 4 out of 6Science: 4.5 out of 6Indonesian: 6 out of 6Physical Education: 6 out of 6Technology: 5 out of 6Social Studies: 4.5 out of 6So yeah, I know right, WTF. I even got an award for 6th best 7th grader overall (there are 34 7th graders in my school) on the award ceremony the week before I got expelled.As I said before, my friends and teachers praised me for this, but my dad insists that its very average. I tried telling my dad that this is actually pretty good and I'm one of the best off and that more than 5 kids went to summer school because they failed more than two subjects. But he wouldn't listen and used that stupid don't compare yourself to them excuse to screw out my arguments.So yeah, tell me what you think & any advice on how to lower my dad's perfectionist standards would be greatly appreciated.

Hooke's law (my brain just reached it's elastic limit)

I was very daring and entered the intro to engineering class as my elective in my first year of highschool. It turns out that I am in over my head. I am always up for a challenge, so I am sticking with the course I am one of the 3 freshmen in the class. On the first day of class our teacher was introducing the class and brought up that we would have to use some trigonometry and other math that the freshmen have no learned yet but he is willing to help us out with that... Anyhow today at the end of class we were given a hand out about "hooke's law" because we had just done a lab where we attached weights to a spring. The paper is pretty straight forward about hooke's theory and the formula F= K (delta)L (Force = K times the change in length) it defines k as the "proportionality constant" which I do not understand. What is a proportionality constant? wikipedia says its a force or spring constant which I still do not understand. Wiki also gives the formula F= -K x (with arrows over the k and x). help please!

Why is almost every free energy video you find a hoax or fake?

The term "free energy" is used both ways by us.What comes from wind, solar or water power is considered free energy.Also everything claiming to produce energy from nothing is considered free energy.Speaking of hoaxes and fakes now is a bit like comparing appels to tomatoes.For me it more like those stage magicians: It all looks real and impossible but they do it, so it must be real.If you really need to brag about your free energy device but are unable to sell a working model to interested people it at least means you are not a scammer.Several people play the game of exposing fakes.And if include this in your search then you get an idea about the amount of fakes or magically illusions out there.The internet is often abused to change opinions or make people do things they usually wouldn't do.Even if it is as simple as clicking on a suggested link for the next video.Patents can disappear or with enough money you can buy them off the inventor.One reason why more and more companies develop in secrecy and without ever applying for any patents - check the swiss army knife ;)There are no conspiracies involving "free energy" but imagine it would be the case...There currently is nothing that would actually allow you to produce enough electricity for your family all year round.At least not if you want to avoid several wind and water turbines and all possible areas covered with solar cells.If you would somehow make a device that produces more output than input (even if it uses up some form of stored energy like magnets) then how would you present it to the world??Could you take the abuse of literally everyone around you calling you a scammer?You know better, so you allow it to be tested - really??Unless you provide all details and open all up you would still be called a scammer.Someone offers you a lot of money to take the thing and have your assurance to never talk about it or invent something similar - suddenly not that impossible to think of...But what if there is no offer but threats instead?A nice show on the internet keeps you safe and allows the sceptics to brag how it is faked.What better way then to make sure there are tons of videos that show similar constructions that clearly can't work? ;)As with every good story there is always a bit of truth somewhere.Over 80 years ago people made magnetmotors that worked.Look it up and check their patents.Most of the fakes we see today are based on the same 4 or 5 machines from back then ;)Our modern life would not be possible without the inventions Tesla made.Still, basically all of his inventions that did not find public use are still considered bogus.How can one of the smartest man of that time have hundrets of used and recognised patents while those using them claim all the rest is useless and fake?Getting energy they can sell was fine.Allowing that everyone can generate all the electricity needed themself not so much.A free generator that everyone can build would never see a meter and you could not force people to put one on either.With unlimited money available those behind electricity, oil, gas and coal will always make sure that anything even just getting close to it will disappear.The internet changed this as now everyone can provide plans, videos and even all required parts if needed.Making someone or something disappear in Africa or Indonesia is easy, doing so with someone who has actual family, a job and lots of friends not so much.Money and contracts are the next best thing then...Remember the hype about Vortex energy a few years back?Videos claiming to have a vortex thingy producing more energy than what is used everywhere.Now in some regions vortex math is actually something people study.And with this the new videos about vortex based free energy devices went down to almost zero.Nothing new anymore that was not shown already.If you study a bit what Tesla did for students and teachers you will find a lot of similarities between his math and the new area of vortex math.But where those vortex guys use our modern math, limited constants and sequences, Tesla actually include all that was known at the time in his math.Like with scientology you have to work your way up the ranks in the vortex world.A lot of things you can only understand by confirming it in experiments, other stuff you will only get know when attending seminars.If you just get together what you find online and try to understand it then try again with a printout of Tesla's circle of math next to it.Knowledge is out there that we just fail to acknowledge or even try to explain if we see it.Just take ancient building skills.We know they did it because their monuments still exist today.But we would utterly fail to replicate this with our modern technology.Let alone with the tools claimed to be available at the time.....Levitation through sound was deemed to be impossible.Then one day we invented powerful ultrasonic speakers and it worked anyway.So how many real "free energy devices" are out there?How knows if it is one, a few or thausands.Same for all the websites and videos out there.After a while you learn how to spot the fakes quickly.Then you still find some videos where you fail to find the hidden battery or motor or power connection.In the end you are left with the same 4 or 5 possible types claimed to have worked almost hundred years ago.Eliminate the bogus and incomplete then there is still some left....It does not mean any of it actually works...That is if you exclude those few companies selling things like magnetmotor generators for a few years now.Going faster than a certain speed would kill you - then we moved on from steam engines.It will never be possible to use the power of the atom to produce electricity - we got nuclear reactors anyway.Now we even try to make fusion generators feasable...So ask yourself if all "free energy" bogus really is just bogus...We know life must exist on other planets outside out solar system but we still could not accept if this life would be more advanced or civilised than we are...Yet we feel the need "to go out there"...Where does Instructables come into play?Take the dare and provide a well documented Instructable that allows anyone to replicate your "free energy device".No solar cells or electric generators please, only stuff that should exist or work.If you don't speak or write english then use some translator and people here will help to properly translate it.The big community here will jump on it, find the hoax behind it and tear it apart.However if they can't then someone will build it to show that it can't actually work.Then imagine the surprise if "I made it!" starts to be clicked more and more...No one could stop the progess or hide it then ;)Of course we all know that nobody will ever post such an Instructable, don't we?Keep in mind that the scam behind "free energy" might just be result of too many scammers...

Cool Batch applet

Hey whats up the names Jason. I am 13 and like to play with computers but not like Halo (although i am guilty of occasionally playing Halo) what interest me is computer logic and programming. So right now i am half-way decentish with Qbasic and consequently Visual Basic, but the language i am most fluent in is just plain old DOS scripting (batch files). My math teacher at the begging of the year my math teacher announced that once o twice a month we would have a pop quiz on square roots and squares of numbers 1-20. Now to say the least I am poor with memorization. So i tried flash cards and starin at a sheet with the squares and square roots on it. but I was pretty consistently getting 60s and 70s. Now being a pretty good student this upset me and my parents weren't exactly happy. So then i decided i would make a batch file to quiz me on this, my first one was on sqrts. writing this took forever so even still i made another for squares. These programs help me study immensely and i now get a perfect 100 every quiz.. i then started thinking that there must be a way to speed up the writing of a simaler quiz program. thats why i wrote this, and i know it is probably mediocre but i like it so be nice. TARC (Team America Rocketry Challenge) 2008

TARC (Team America Rocketry Challenge) is the world's largest rocketry competition. Teams must design, simulate, build, and fly a rocket capable of carrying two raw eggs to 750 feet (no more, no less). The eggs must stay aloft, under a parachute, for precisely 45 seconds. About 700 high school teams compete each year, and the top 100 teams are invited to the finals in Washington DC. My team (#6081) was invited this year. We are a first year team and we finished 13th out of 643 teams. Here' what happened: We woke up bright and early on Saturday to prep the rocket. We put it on the launch pad and declared that it was ready to fly. The rocket zoomed up to 742 feet and stayed aloft for about 41.5 seconds (the goals are 750ft (no more, no less) and 45 seconds (again; no more, no less)). Both raw eggs survived the journey and we were awarded a score of 15.02 (the lower the better). We watched nervously as the other 99 teams launched their rockets. By around 1:30, nearly every team had launched and we were in 7th place! The top 18 teams are required to fly again (the average of the two scores is used to determine the rankings). As we were preparing the rocket, the Stealth B2 Bomber flew overhead - it was spectacular! With the B2 safely out of the way, launching resumed. Our rocket (because the winds suddenly died) flew higher than expected to an altitude of 783 feet and stayed aloft for 44 seconds, giving us a score of around 35. Unfortunately, this score demoted us to 13th place. After the initial disappointment, we were thrilled - our first-year rocketry team had beaten 643 other teams from around the country - we were in the top 2% of rocketry teams all over the United States of America! In addition, because we were one of the top 18 teams, we were invited to attend the NASA Student Launch Initiative (SLI). SLI offers a stipend for a teacher to attend a week long program with NASA focusing on how to integrate hands-on aerospace projects into math and science classrooms. After completion of the program, student rocketry team members are invited to submit a proposal to NASA for a rocket designed to fly one mile high with a scientific payload. If approved by NASA engineers, NASA hires us to build - and fly - our proposed rocket. The entire team is thrilled to have this opportunity! I thought many students who browse this forum might benefit from this post. TARC is an amazing opportunity, and with so many ingenious people on Instructables, the veteran teams will have to fight hard next year!

Free Energy - Am I insane or is it time to wake up?

Some might have noticed that I started a few, lets say, unconventional topics here.I added one just as a response to some very nasty feedback I got in other places.If you wonder what I am talking about check my topics about all things related to magnetism, "free energy" and such nonsense.The feedback I got was directed personal enough and verbal enough that I decided to increase my speed of seeding bread crumbs that might allow other people to "see" things slightly differently.Being called insane and mental case is the only things I use here as most of the rest would qualify as insults of the worst kind.The goal that was claimed I totally missed is to make people open up.Science or knowledge is as fluent as life itself.It eveloves with us, around us and through us.But we learned to use technology mostly to replace humans and to make our life easier.With that laziness also a reduced "desire" for knowledge and understand evolved.It is now far easier to "Google it" and forget it right after than to acutally learn and really understand something.A prime example is the disappearing artform of creating Japanese swords.No industrial process can produce a steel as pure and with such properties as used to be "offered" to the master swordsmith.Both are highly specialsed and rely on each other to create the perfect sword that outlasts generations.Once tradition gives way to modern life even this art will become a lost artform.We lost so much already, be it species, health, enviroment or just a "clean planet".Instead of accepting nature back into our scientific thinking and understanding we will continue to fail and get even more reluctant to learn new things.The blockbusters of science are no longer finding new laws of phsics or trying to understand things.We try to go further and further and use more and more dangerous ways to "create" the energy we continue to use more and more with no regrets.Well, other than complaining about the bills for it, which we wouldn't have otherwise...Why do we need more forms of colliding atoms to create energy?No because we need so much, only because we want more and more and at "centralised" locations.Distribution, control, money...Allowing us to use solar panels to reduce our electricity bill is nice, but try to overdo it and make good money by creating you own solar panel park and you get into trouble already.You can't see it anywhere other then back to your provider.And you only get whatever he thinks is a fair price for it, usually far less than what you pay to get it.Once you reach zero some even won't pay you money at all.And since there is always winter and night times it is only good that there will be always a need for electricity from the grid.Just try to get rid of your elecricity, water and gas connection in a township or city in case you found other sources you get for free.....Even if you build new most won't even allow you to without these "required" connections.If you need waste waster you also need tap water you pay for.And since a waste water treatment is no longer hyginic enough (despite proving the opposite) you can't get out.Gas you might be able to avoid but if there is electricity in the stree than it is already a building requirement to provie to the builder...What if all this nonsense and fakery actually has a true background somewhere?Humans are not meant to fly but we developed planes anyways.What once was a dream for a select few is now the prefered travel mode ofr most going on a far away holiday.But it is only so popular because there is a big demand.And where is demand profit can be made.Like a farmer:If you have ton of corn like twenty farmers around you then your local price will be low.Sell them a bit further away and you might get a lot more.In return our demand is closly related to the demands of those that provide the source of your demands.We all need energy and we evolve into a society that will need more of with every new generation.I try to give you hint in the form of a comparison:If you have a nice man cave and love to tinker than you might have a framed hand drill on the wall to remind you of how it all started for your grandfather.Or in most case you just liked it and got it for 2 bucks from a garage sale LOLEither, imagine all electricity would be gone and lost forever.Suddenly this crappy drill becomes a status symbol because only you can do things other people really struggle with - you drill holes with ease...Imagine the rpice you could ask to sell it..."Free energy" is the same but sadly in reverse.If a company sees a profit than it will be utilised some way.And if it happens that energy is your main income and keeps you rich and in control than you don't mind paying two or three fortunes to someone so he can forget and is happy give you his machine.Or would you really say no to life of no limits and with nothing to worry for your future generations of kids and grandkids?A few tried anyway to make a furtune themself by keeping a circle of trusted persons and finding enough willing investors to get their project going.Even if you can find some flaws there are still doubts about what someone would go through the lenght of providing online updates, sales numbers, testimonials and so on for years.Funny enough actually finding someone who is sceptic and make him check and report about it does not work either.No big university orders one or asks to really check it and provide a real world testimonial.No government or legal agency steps in to stop the "fraud" either.What is real, what is fake, what is disguise - you can figure it out if you want to.Ok, I could, but why bother if litereally everyone one already did and showed nothing works when it comes to the great unknown?Exactly for that reason alone it is worth it!People might make money now from ads or through clickbait but the topic is older than the internet already.And the proof even older than electricity...So many people would not try unless someone convinced them to try it ;)Might be just a bad joke but gets the point:If you ask 20 people if you can swim through the river to get to the other side then you might get confusing answers.1. No problem it is safe.Fully true but the guy might be from far up the river where it has no crocodiles in it...2. You could try it but a boat is safer as there might be corcodiles here.Still leaves you the option to swim as you can't be sure about the reptiles...You could go on and create a near endless list with bridges up ahead and so on.What it comes to is that depending on HOW you ask and WHO you ask the answers can be as different as day and night.In terms of science and making someone understand it take the most basic approach possible.Remember that time in school when your math teacher confronted you the existence of negative numbers?The confusion with the zero and how to add, subtract or multiply...Your teacher might have been great or you a quick learner but imagine the worst possible way to teach you an understanding of negative numbers!You know that 5 - 8 equals -3.You learned that this is true and why it is so.Imagine your teacher would have explained this extra simple like back with the apples when learning to add numbers."If there are 5 people in a room and 8 people leave the room, then 3 people must go back in so that room is empty!"Makes total sense if you expand the number game from above to 5 - 8 + 3 = 0 !!No sense at all however if you do it with people ;)People are not numbers, pressures or volumes, they are "real" to us.We associate certain things automatically, other we learn to associate and interpret through learning.Learning however is no longer actually doing all that would be involved in less technological world.We like magic tricks because we fail to understand how it is done or sometimes even how it is possible.Today it is for entertainment only.A true magician would never use his skills to scam people.But spend enough and research and you can do the same trick you saw on stage.Some not as good or not all though - thats life...Ask a good magician how how long it took him to get his new trick ready for the stage and quite often you get to hear it was years in the making.Think about that fact when you judge what is possible by dedication ;)

South By Southwest (SXSW) 2009 Interactive Review - It's a Party Masquerading as a Conference

It's no secret that SXSW is more about the parties than the conference, but when you have so many smart people who run interesting businesses together, it's a pretty significant lost opportunity that the conference isn't better. Christy and I attended the 2008 SXSW Interactive conference, and decided it wasn't worth coming back. However, Instructables was a finalist in the Web Awards "Classic" category at the 2009 SXSW Interactive conference, which netted us two free passes. So, we attended again this year. This is my review of the interactive portion of the conference.High level - I'm glad we didn't pay. If you go, admit that you're going for entertainment, not to learn something about the interactive industry. The keynotes were excellent -- even if I didn't come away from them with anything actionable to do --, while the rest of the panels and talks were terrible. Having the resources to get to Austin doesn't mean that most conference attendees will have done their homework -- otherwise interesting panels with smart people were nearly always hijacked by stupid questions, and unfortunately it was rare that a moderator would shut down the stupid questions and get back to anything engaging. For example, at How Safe is Your Domain Name? someone actually asked "What does ICANN stand for?" If you're the type of person who reads reviews, and tries to determine if a conference has value for your business, SXSW does not. It's a party masquerading as a conference. If you go, think of it as a vacation, enjoy the evening events and keynotes, and when you learn one or two interesting things by accident, you won't be disappointed. Longer Review:Plan B: Can an Ad Guy Bring Bike Sharing to America?The story of how an advertising agency exec. was able to start up a bicycle sharing venture. Worth checking out just to understand how Crispin Porter+Bogusky works, and to see how they keep their thinking fresh about advertising.Spying 2.0: Can America Compete With Web-Savvy Enemies?Quickly devolved into an I-use-Twitter-so-should-you panel. Yawn. Is Privacy Dead or Just Very Confused?Academics talking about websites they use, and privacy issues they think might apply. A discussion of "experiences"; nobody on the panel is actually doing anything real, nor do they have any insight into major players' privacy policies or how those policies affect users. How did they get a panel?Change v2Lawrence Lessig's non-keynote-scheduled keynote on how money reduces our faith in politics. Excellent. Find a video of this and watch it.Opening Remarks: Tony HsiehTony Hsieh has given this identical talk at other conferences, but the message is so good, it's worth seeing twice. Slides available here.Feed Me: Bite Size Info for a Hungry InternetThis had an interesting set of people on the panel, but it nonetheless turned into a why-Facebook's-new-homepage-sucks-because-it-copied-friendfeed fest. Then, the panelists started openly wondering why they hadn't invited anyone from Twitter to be on the panel.Collaborative Filters: The Evolution of Recommendation EnginesThis was one of the biggest disappointments. Anton Kast of Digg is clearly top notch, and has spent deep hours thinking about recommendations and the math behind them; and, the people making up the rest of the panel were no slouches either. Unfortunately, they spent more than half of the time describing in layman's terms how each of their websites work, and we never got to anything juicy. "On Digg, users rate up a story they find interesting by clicking the Digg button..."! Edupunk: Open Source EducationThe description of this panel really got me pumping: DIY teachers around the world are using open source course management systems, open access textbooks, and other open source tools to buck the chains and limitations of corporate education software. What the panel really turned out to be was a bunch of ineffectual academics having a cat fight over who was more ineffectual. They all tried to outdo one another with stories of how management at their university prevented them from having any impact, and the winner seemed to be the panelist who accomplished the least. Seriously.This was only topped by the first question from the audience, which opened with: "I've learned a new word at this conference, and I'm going to use it here: monetize..." Seriously? I now have a new rule for conferences: Stay away from all education topics. The ratio of people with opinions to people who can/are having impact is way too high. How to Create a Great Company CultureThis is a tough topic, and one in which there's no right answer or overarching theory. The only way to get data is to listen to anecdotes, and this session gave me a few more. Although to be fair, I probably could have spent the same hour reading blogs written by company founders and gotten more out of it. Sunday Keynote: Stephen Baker / Nate Silver InterviewInterviews with really passionate people are always a treat. Nate Silver fits the bill.From Flickr and Beyond: Lessons in Community ManagementI was baffled why Metafilter was invited to be on this panel. In a discussion of privacy policies, the director of operations from Metafilter said "We don't have one. We're not there yet." Despite obviously having the most to contribute, the representative from Youtube didn't share anything; his lawyer must have told him to keep his mouth shut. Overall this was let down.New Think for Old PublishersThis panel was deceptively described, and the audience was annoyed to find a group of publishers simply looking to scribble down suggestions rather than having a conversation about the industry. Fortunately, Clay Shirky was animated enough to heat things back up.Presenting Straight to the BrainRunning a panel on better ways to use slides and graphics where each panelist presents slides might seem a bit hubristic, not they pulled it off. Take home: Use your slides to tell a story.How to Protect Your Brand Without Being a Jerk!This powerhouse panel was interrupted a mere 15 minutes in by a self-described-artist-from-Europe who raised (and shook) his hand for 5 minutes until the moderator eventually gave in. His question: "Do I need to copyright my songs? No really, do I need to copyright each one?" This softball opened a pandora's box of stupid questions from audience members clearly unable to format their questions into that tricky search engine text box. Monday Keynote: Virginia Heffernan / James Powderly InterviewJames Powderly is a friend and deeply fascinating individual. I wish this interview had been longer so they could have gotten deeper into his motivations and experiences. Advertising is Entertaining - Who's Selling Out?I came out of this session thinking it was pretty good. However, on further reflection, since it was more conversation than lecture, and lots of people had the opportunity to speak their mind, I was just happy no one said anything particularly stupid. This should give you a sense of my expectations at this stage at SXSW.New Threats to New Media: Fair Use On TrialThis was an excellent panel, particularly because Jason Schultz ran a very tight ship, kept things moving, and prevented questions from derailing the session. In my opinion, all three videos shown were clear examples of fair use, and I would have appreciated one that was a little closer to the line, but the session overall was still both enjoyable and useful. Building Strong Online CommunitiesWhile too general to have any actionable items, this was still pretty good. It's also fun to hear Drew Curtis's irreverent opinion on community. Tuesday Keynote: Chris Anderson / Guy Kawasaki ConversationThis made me really look forward to Chris Anderson's coming book Free. Guy Kawasaki did a fantastic job moderating, especially with respect to mocking people who ask questions just to insert a pitch for themselves, and limiting meaningless follow-up "questions."Nom Nom Nom: The Secrets of Successful FoodbloggingGet a DSLR, all other rules of successful blogging apply.The parties and evening events were good. I enjoyed Dorkbot Austin and Plutopia, and still think often of the food at The Salt Lick. The Web Awards were surprisingly fun. We were up against some much bigger names, and Flickr won (which in my opinion, was the expected value; I use Flickr at least weekly, if not more). Baratunde Thurston emceed, and he kept it spirited and fast-paced. His interludes were funny, and when no one from Flickr showed up to claim their award, he claimed it for them. "I remember really wanting to share some photos online..." I've been to other conferences where the parties are fun, the talks are engaging, and you come away with a laundry list of actionable items that will make measurable improvements in your business (or life). The SXSW interactive conference has all the ingredients to make that happen, which is why it's so disappointing when it doesn't come together.
