Mechanism for mechanical timer

Hello everyone, My wife and I both feed the dog, but we're never sure whether the other's already done it or not.  (the food disappears pretty quickly)  I'd like to build a track with a slider that takes about 10 hours to slide from 'fed' at the top to 'not fed', and make it so that the slider is easy to slide back to the top. What immediately comes to mind is a counter weight escapement mechanism, but I though I'd hit up the brain trust to make sure there wasn't a simpler way to pull this off.  (I could also envision a timer chip hooked to a mechanical release, but I'd prefer to stay wholly mechanical for this one.) Sear Mechanisms

I have tried to build a sear system on some of my guns, but it is so hard! I built one that kind of worked but couldn't fit on my new rifle that i just made (i might post but has a block trigger right now). Who knows how to build one of these sears, and is it really worth it? What if a block trigger just works better?

mechanical wave

I'm trying to build a tail of a fake animal, and the tail is kinda long (total length of about 3 feet), I have a 10 pound pull solenoid and I want the tail to kind of do a wave thing, like if you were do a wave with your arms ( not in a group, all by yourself where you hold your hands together, you know what I'm talking about). I know how to do the electronic part of it by sending pulses to the solenoid, but How would I convert that into a believable tail?

Need help to design mechanical mechanism

Hello everyone, I want to create feeder cart with seperate section, that will be hangin on rails.  Feeder cart will have four positions: First one (First load) will be bottom gates closed, middle gates open to the top. Second (Second load) will  be bottom gates closed, middle gates have to be locked in horizontal position. Third  position (First unload) bottom gates open, middle gates have stay locked. Fourth position (Second unload) bottom gates open and middle gates also open, that stuff drops out. I want ask you advice how to design bottom and middle gates open, closing and locking mechanical mechanism (without any electronical parts). This feeder cart will be operating by one man.  I have created middle gates mechanism, but maybe you have better solution.  I really appreciate for any ideas. Sorry for my english mistakes. Mechanism for pouring exact amount of liquid?

I have a cylindrical container(around .75 liters) that is filled with water. I want to accurately pour a certain amount of water in a cup. How can that be done?? My idea (might be complete fail) : I put a hole at the bottom of the cylinder, and a door mechanism that opens and closes the hole. The door will be controlled by timing. So lets say i want to pour 50ml of water in a cup. Using some physics i can get the time needed for the water to freefall into the cup and i will open and close the door accordingly.  The idea sounds a bit cheesy so I wanted some opinions. Picture is attached. Some comments I would appreciate: 1. Is my door opening and closing mechanism a complete fail? A small motor will turn the pinion which will in turn move the rack horizontally opening and closing the door. Note that I want the door open/close mechanism to be as small as possible.  2.If the drink is not water, lets say orange juice or red bull, will the timing vary considerably? 3. Any ideas how to accomplish this in another way other than timing and opening closing a door? I want minimum complexity, and the amount poured doesn't have to be very exact, lets say within a 10% margin. (This is basically my question in the first 2 lines).  Note: At my disposal i have simple machining methods(lathe, milling, drilling, cutting), but nothing too fancy. I have sufficient knowledge of microcontrollers and electronics. Thanks in advance!! Chris

Physics question has me stumped

A large crate sits on a pickup truck which has coefficients of friction mu(s) =0.6 and mu(k) =0.4 . My question is how do I calculate the impact velocity if the truck accelerates (-8.0 m/s^2) and the crate slides forward 1.5 m to impact the back of the truck? Can anyone please walk me through this problem whenever you get the chance? Thank you.

Mechanical pencil basics

If you want  to enjoy life, you should make mechanical pencil guns and launchers. All you need to do is take the mechanical pencil out and add springs however you like and you can make a gun thing.

realistic firing mechanisms.

Has anyone developed a detachable magazine with internal follower mated to a weapon which isolates the cocking and chambering of a round? i.e. the weapon is automatically chambered when the ram rod is cocked.

Firing Mechanism help

I need help making a firing mechanism. I made one of the bamboo stick shooter with a pen and a rubber, but then I taped the whole thing on a tube of paper for stability and aim. Any ideas? Please, if you can, try to make one with mainly paper and no Knex pieces? Thanks in advance if you can.

Rotating stacking mechanism

DIY mechanical Iris ? Answered

Redirecting a mechanical force? Answered

Hi, im looking for some help with a physics/engineering type problem. Im looking for the most effective method of tranfering a mechanical force from one direction to another. For example if i had a 1" horizontal rod struck on its east face which then begins to travel westward on a fixed horizontal track, im looking for a method of transfering the energy (not sure if thats the right word) in the opposite direction. A few important factors are that the rod which is struck does need to travel around 4 inches on the fixed rail, and any vertical movement needs to be kept to a minimum. Below is one of my early ideas, serves little pupose as the mechinism is too large but gives you the jist of what im talking about.

Mechanical Cover Flow

I was thinking of a project for a type of shelf for your CD jewel cases. It would be a way of presenting CD covers in a similar way to iTunes 7's cover flow. (see http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/aa/CoverFlow_Screenshot.png) You could mount the cases and have a slider to flip through your CDs. Anyone know how this could be achieved?

Help: Mechanical Odometer

I have a bicycle trailer that I use for groceries and such, and hope to use for extended bicycle trips. I would like to get or construct an odometer for the back of the trailer, to advertise how far I've traveled. I've looked around a lot, but have had difficulty finding an non-electric or large-display DIY odometers (ideally, I would like the numbers to be 2 to 3 inches tall, and would like to keep it below ten pounds). I would prefer it to be mechanical only, requiring no batteries or electrical power, but am willing to give on that point for the sake of simplicity of design, weight and cost. If you have any advice where I could find advice or instructions on how I might set something up, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Electronic feeder mechanism

I am currently building a pitching machine (I'm trying to do it for less than $150) and I'm having trouble designing an electronic feeder mechanism that will advance one ball at a time. I thought about cannibalizing a cheap R/C car for a transmitter, receiver, and servo but I'm not sure that will be strong enough to move the prongs when they are under a load. I only have $50 left to stay under budget (I already have all the support materials and the motor/wheel) and I have very little experience with electronic components. It seems to me that a R/C solenoid should do the trick with springs on the prongs to return them to the staring position but my brother tells me that $50 is an unreasonable budget. I really want to get this figured out on the cheap so I can show my brother (the electrical engineer) that it can be done!

A question for experienced mechanics

I  know someone who has a newer model of the Dodge Ram with a Hemi V8.  It has a special gas-saving feature which turns off 4 of the cylinders when it is at highway speeds.  I was wondering if this was a practical idea to do to an old 350 small block.  I know that you could just unplug the spark plugs to 4 cylinders.  Of course, you would have to do something to release the pressure also. (I was thinking of removing the entire spark plug.) I am not very experienced in auto mechanics so I was wondering if anyone here could figure this out.  PS : This option of shutting down cylinders was also available in older Cadillacs I beleive it was called the 4-6-8, which shut down either 2 or 4 cylinders.  This engine however, was known for it's problems, which is why I was wondering about doing this.

I've been working on this (hobby status) on and off over the last fifteen years or so.... a mechanism that immediately begins to rotate in either direction with an imbalancing displacement of as little as one degree. With repeated periodic displacements of as little as five to seven degrees its rate of rotation rapidly approaches about a 100 to a 150 rotations per minute over the course of just eight to ten repetitions, all while overcoming only negligible frictional resistance from the main axel (equipped with bearings). It may have some applications for extracting rotational motion more efficiently from wind and wave and maybe a couple of other things too.... or it may just be a work of art.

Custom mechanical K'nex?

With all this 3d printing now days, and some of it is being used with K'nex I'm wondering if there are more things that need to be added to the range. Now i can understand that K'nex with its target at younger folks (the highest age they list is 9+) it probably isn't feasible for them to spend the time developing some things. And the things im talking about? Pneumatics More powerful motors Custom gears (sizes, rack and pinion, worm gears) Servos A more dedicated robotics system anything else i may have missed? Just peoples thoughts on whether this is worth pursuing, perhaps even make them for sale (please don't sue me K'nex)

Mechanical washing machine.

I work for a charity with Aboriginal Australians in the remote outback of Australia, a place called Arnhem land, it is worth a google. People need washing machines, they buy them, they break , even with warranty cover, they can not be fixed as no service men will come here to service them, we are too remote.  Houses here have about 20 people living in them, there is no work here and people live on small government payments which are not enough to cover daily expenses. Due to the difficulty in accquiring and maintaining a working washing machine, health issues such as Crusted Scabies have taken hold here, and cause much suffering. We can't erradicate the disease here without getting working washing machines. We need a solution, an easy to use, easy to fix washing machine. No electronics. Cold water only is fine. Possibly even hand operated, or wind operated (or other)  I found one which is a plastic  tub which turns with a handle and stands on two feet.  However the construction too flimsy, the tub not big enough for a bed sheet, it was green though. Didn't use electric power. Anyone have any ideas? Know any other sites I could post on to get ideas? Thanks : )

Advice on riveting moving joints

Hi guys. I've been prototyping some very basic steampunk mechanisms that I'm preparing an Instructable for, and I'm looking for a bit of advice on how to make the moving joints. The mechanisms are simple, with parts I'm cutting from brass sheet myself. They'll be using joints that I'd like to make reasonably permanent and low profile, yet able to move (elbow joints, for want of a better description). I've not tested it yet, but I've read that putting a piece of paper between the two arms before riveting them (blind/pop rivets) will allow the joint to move once it's fastened together. I was also considering whether it might be advantageous to put a nylon of teflon washer between them before riveting, instead. Any advice on whether this type of moving joint would be any good, if it would last with moderate use, whether it would work at all, and what some possible alternatives might be would be very much appreciated. How can I make 2 wheels on the same shaft counter rotate?

Hi, I'm looking to take 2 wheels of the same size, placed next to each other on a shaft, and gear them in such a way that they rotate in opposite directions but at the same speed. Any gearing that takes place has to happen right in the center. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to accomplish this in the most efficient way?

At an industial facicilty that cuts and welds polypropylene sheet to make huge tanks for steel mills and other industries, three buildings, 24000 sq. ft fabrication area, 4000 sq. ft for mixed sizes of offices, 5 propane forklifts, 1 mobile crane, 4 overhead cranes, 2 utility trucks, 2 heavy duty pickup trucks, several powertools, several extrusion machines, various rigging lifting and handling apparatus, a 25HP rotary screw compressor and a 10HP dual piston compressor, various shop machines and saws, seveveral pneumatic presses and fusion machines, and tons of other miscellaneous stuff. How many guys do I need to maintain it all?

Candy Vending machine, how to limit the amount of servos needed?

I'm making some plans for a vending machine that is to be used for dispensing candy in my home.I went for the spiral method (please tell me if there's a better method). I got all the plans laid out and i got most of it working already. The problem is: I want to limit the number of servos this project is using. Servos are expensive and they take precious pins on the arduino i'm using for the project. The question is: I have 9 spirals for candy and i would need 9 servos to turn them and release candy (nom nom). Is there some ingenious way to limit the amount of servos and still be able to rotate all the spirals independently? Using "Phun" to simulate mechanisms

I'm not an engineer, and don't have access to Autodesk / AutoCAD, so I've been using Phun to simulate mechanical design.It's not strictly valid in an engineering sense, but it works pretty well for roughing out ideas. The polygons were created in Inkscape, then converted to Phun scenes with SVG2Phun. Some objects won't translate (like grouped objects), so it's necessary to simplify (hence the two images from Inkscape.)

Matlab code for object detection using Webcam?
