Ball Mill Help? Answered

I'm planing on constructing a ball mill out of pvc plumbing parts. So far I have two questions... ~I need some help with how to get a motor to use to drive it, that wouldn't require 'to much' wiring to set up. I was thinking about using a drill and mounting it some how. ~Second, I would like to know where I could get lead or other non-sparking media other than online. For example, I heard you could use lead fishing weights, if they sell this at a place like Dicks Sporting Goods could you please send me a product number? Thank You for your time

Milling PCBs with grbl?

Hi everyone. Ive just finished my little mill, and it works great, its ardunio based running grbl control software. I thought it would be cool to mill PCBs  so I downloaded fritzing, designed a PCB and Im now stuck, as I need something to output an NC Gcode to the mill. Fritzing can output a few different formats, pdf, svg, and grber. I have got Vcarve but it doesn’t like  fritzings pdfs, I can import grber file into grbl, but the scale is wrong and the trace looks like its full of errors. Can anyone recommend a PCB design package that is compatible with grbl?

CNC mill Q's?

Papa is looking into getting a CNC machine for his business and asked me about what to get. I looked into it for a little while but really I have no clue what is going to be needed. We receive imprints (negatives) of people's feet in a floral-foam like substance and normally clean it up a little and pour a mix of plaster into it to get a positive mold, which needs intensive course and fine sanding in a sink, (as well as adding things like metatarsal pads and other custom things depending on the order) and from that point the ordered material is vacuum formed over and the rest of the insert is made. Because of the shape of the feet and added features, it seems like we could cut out the use of the heavy plaster entirely if we use a 3D scanner to scan in the molds and then mill them out with a very basic 3 axis CNC out of cheaper/more light material for the rest of the processing. The question is, what equipment will be needed? I see some of the cheap 3D scanners are really nothing more than glorified webcams and fancy software, while (guessing the much better) laser scanners are pretty $$$. So how can we scan these imprints into the computer as a 3D file? And what are some good cheap CNC machines that can do the main 3 axises and enough to do 6 to 10 molds at a time?

Bandsaw Mill for Lumber production

Factory made mills can cost 1000s of $. These mills can make great valuable lumber from what otherwise might be firewood. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQT4meL1L-Q This one seems to be an adaptation of an existing bandsaw. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQT4meL1L-Q Several videos show machines with car or trailer tires. Although I've used bandsaws, belt sanders etc quite a bit, how they track the blade or belt remains a bit of a mystery to me. How can such mills be made at home? I found an -ible for a _CHAIN_saw mill, but I'm thinking of a BANDsaw mill.

DIY Milled iPhone case? Answered

I am taking a class in automated manufacturing this year in school, and thus have to do a few projects requiring laser cutters/cnc mills. So I thought as kind of an extra project, it would be cool to make a case for my iphone 4. So the question: is it possible that I can mill myself an iphone case, probably out of wood (I prefer aluminum/stainless steel but that might just scratch the heck out of the phone), and if so, what type of wood should i use (I am clueless... not a carpenter :D ), any ways, any thoughts, or maybe someone has tried it before? Just though it would be a cool project if I could make it happen...

CNC Mill From a joystick.

Hey so iv got this slightly damages USB joystick sitting around my house and it struck me that it could possibly be fun to turn it into a little CNC rig. Figure since its already got usb control to some degree it would simplify things alittle. So what I was wondering was is there some complication that makes this a bad idea that I am not seeing. Thought I would ask before rip the thing apart.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to machine a slot into an aluminum round rod

Hi All, I need to create a slot as shown in the attached graphic. It needs to be precise and repeatable - ideally in one pass. I have these tools that might help... Lathe Drill Router Grinder I don't have a mill which is what I think I need. Any suggestions? Thanks, Marc    P.S. The squared corners at the top of the slot are not required. They can be round (such as would be created by a drill bit or other rotating tool).

creating a ball mill and making thermite

I have come across a few 'instructables' which show how to create a ball mill. This mainly uses an electric powered screw driver, a plastic bottle, some ball bearings (I will use lead even though steel would suffice) some epox putty and a vice clamp.. However some points of the instructable was unclear. I came across several electric drills, where the button was situated in a place that meant it was not possible to secure to the on position, also they seem to either go to slow or too fast. Finally with the weight of a significant amount of aluminium and lead/steel balls, I found the bottle section weighed too much and caused stress on the drill bit which caused it to dislocate and fall out, or in the second case.. the motor just gave up. My two questions. 1.is there a better instructable which addresses the problem of supporting the plastic bottle . 2. would a mixture of aluminium powder and charcoal (german dark) work better than aluminium powder? would the ratio of dark powder and iron oxide change? i gather that aluminium oxidises, is that bad? i don't really see how it's possible to avoid oxidisation without the charcoal.

CNC mill stepper motor controller

Hi y'all from France! I've been aching to get my hands on a CNC machine from quite some time now, unfortunately I'm quite a noob when it comes to electronics and such. I'd found that while the machine itself is not that hard to build (see all the ables), however the electronics involved are just too complicated for me to build a controller from scratch. I've found the other day some seller on french ebay selling a complete controller without the power supply, so I've been wondering about it but am not in the position to fully understand that piece of equipment. So my question is: what do you think about it guys? Does it seems to be ok (BTW I've also found 3 NEMA23 stepper motors, precisely the same model as described in the specifications for the controller board on its seller's page)? For now I just want a three axis CNC machine capable of cutting polymer foam and soft wood, so I don't really need expensive and powerful stepper motors. Thx for any kind of input!

Dryer motor

Alright folks, after my last posting of the washing machine motor failed to prove helpful, ( because of my lack of understanding, not the help offered, that was excellent ) I decided to scrap that idea and start anew, this time with a dryer motor. I have a motor here now that like before I simply want to be able to start and stop at will. This time around I have the original wiring diagram too! So, my question is how do I wire the thing, simply with an on/off switch? No variable speeds, no reverse directions, just on/off. Oh, and Id like it run on 110v as well.

How do you make more accurate tools from less accurate ones? Answered

I was wondering, in a general sense how people make more accurate tools from less accurate ones. More specifically, I was reading about reprap and it said it was possible to make components of itself from other previous repraps. However, the errors in them would compound and make less and less accurate/precise models. Therefore there would be some limit to how many times it could replicate. But, for instance. A lathe requires an accurate/precise leadscrew to control x axis motion. Using a lathe it is possible to make another leadscrew however this would be less accurate/precise than the one already on the machine. So for my true question. How do they make more accurate ones than the previous ones. If all the current lathes in the world are +- 1mm then how would you make the next set of lathes that are more accurate/precise than that without a piece of machinery that originally had better accuracy. (sort of a chicken and egg problem) Is there some type of machine or algorithm or something that allows a machine to make something that is more accurate/precise than itself. Thanks

how can I cut a keyway without a mill? Answered

I need to cut a (roughly) 3mm keyway in a piece of 10mm brass rod and I don't have access to a mill. I do have access to most hand tools, though. Can anyone recommend a way I can cut the keyway? I'm not too fussed about accuracy, as long as its within +/- 1.5mm of the nominal width I'm happy. Also, if it matters, it will be about 5mm deep.
