Emotiv Mind Control?

I saw on BBC tech news of a mind control headset made by Emotiv which claims to be a way of controlling on a computer using your mind. The technology has been used for years in helping severely disabled people communicate but this seems to be one of the first times that this technology has gone mainstream. But the question is: Is this just a novelty item? And more importantly: Will I be able to play anything on it other than that Myst-like demo that they supply? And if this product is really going to hail the end of the gamepad then what will YOU use it for?Released next year![Here's the link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7254078.stm]

HAARP mind control?

Allegations have been made that the HAARP project is behind mind control experiments. The ex governor Jesse Ventura, interviewed a professor who demonstrated in his show that it is possible to send messages to people's minds without any need for hearing. The professor put two piezoelectric transducers on Ventura's chin and Ventura claimed to be able to "hear" music in his brain. Real science or pseudoscience? If this device could be made, wouldn't this device help people without hearing? What about the possibilities of learning devices or communication? I believe that this device could put thoughts on people's minds but not necessarily control them (unless it is an easy suggestible subject). Please watch a segment of the show and share your opinion:

Mind controlled gadgets? Answered

I was wondering if I could somehow design a simple gadget to detect pulses in your mind to turn a head mounted torch on and off.      So far, I am thinkng of putting metal pads onto your head, which would be connected to an amplifier of some sort. Since I am trying to detect Beta waves, "varying frequencies that are often associated with active, busy, or anxious thinking and active concentration." The amplified siignals would then be fed into an op amp active bandpass filter, to filter out all except that specific frequency. The output would then go into a switch of some sort. Would this work? Or are there some problems with it.

Deep into my mind...

Hey guys! I last logged in...10 months ago. But I wanna stay instructably active, i just...can't for some reason. Anyway, I made this forum topic to tell you about a topic that goes so deep into my mind, you might just not make it back out.    You see, there's this concept called 'escapism'. Copied from Wikipedia; "Escapism is mental diversion by means of entertainment or recreation, as an "escape" from the perceived unpleasant or banal aspects of daily life". So basically, it is the concept of daydreaming at such an intense state that everything seems real, and you 'escape' life's stressing aspects. It is something I do very often to the point of living an entire lifetime in an escape. Every sense is so real. Feel, hear smell, taste, sight, it's just unbelievable. Despite living a whole 80 or so years in an escape, it only lasted about 10 minutes. After coming out of such escapes, I feel depressed over missing something or someone in that escape. Some escapes will take place over an entire lifetime, some will be over a few years, a week, or maybe only a few minutes. I have been in extraterrestrial planets, barren deserts, vast fields, cosmic space, and many other moments. Some might even be of just another person. Same day, same age and generation, just a different person with a different family with a just different lifestyle. They are just these amazingly twisted trances that effect my life. They pull me into depressions for no reason.      Now you may be thinking "That's so stupid.". But it's not just a concept anymore. It's almost become a lifestyle. I might hear a song or a part of a melody, and I'll have this amazing nostalgia...bringing me back to an escape. Sometimes I'll just miss my surroundings. I might miss mountains, or a clear view of the milky way in the night sky, or I might even miss the view of multiple planets in an extraterrestrial sky. Sometimes I miss it so much I cry. Some escapes I remember, most I have forgotten. My escapes are almost like dreams. They are long and can sometimes feel real, but I forget 90% of it within 10 minutes of snapping out of it.      Please, don't be like "YOU'RE SEVERELY DEPRESSED AND YOU SHOULD SEE A DOCTOR", because I already have a therapist. To be honest, with the minor depression I have, he isn't helping at all. I'm not completely depressed, I mean I have my moments (everyone knows that awkward stage of adolescence xP), I'm rather happy of my life. So. What do you all think?

Expanding Thought Process, the Mind, and General Creativity

I believe that, for the utmost of simplicity, I should begin this topic with the fact that I am a teenager who is quiet passionate about electronics, engineering, and teaching others in general. I have run several websites (each generating a plus of 200 unique visitors/day), created many circuits for school applications (projects), and many similar forms of expressing oneself such as writing. Being just about 15 today, my mind is far from creative, though. Less then three years ago, I was at, what is at this point, my "creative prime". I was publishing quality articles daily for my website, and greatly grew in the ranks of superiority among other websites in my niche. At ages 12 and 13, I was pushing content out - in addition to designing many webpages through core-coding languages - on a daily basis, requiring a load on my creativity to be pulled. Nonetheless, I always managed to tap into my inner-creativity and pull out great ideas. The Point of This Thread Less then two years later, though, I'm stuck in a bit of a muddy puddle. I cannot tune into my own creativity, for the well that it is is now very much dried up. I'm looking to somehow expand my mind and thought process. Are there any activities (keep it legal, guys(;   ) that can help? It'd be a huge inspiration. I can come up with the ideas for circuits and execute them, but from there, all of my creations fall short - they don't end up how I pictured them. The visual aspect of my brain is, uh, malfunctioning. Thanks(:

What determines the most complex thing that you can visualize and manipulate in your minds eye? Answered

What is the most complex thing that you can visualize and manipulate in your minds eye? I have been asking around, and have found responses to be quite variable. Some people have no problem with complex images in 3-dimensions, others can't visualize in 3-d at all.For example, I can visualize, rotate, and manipulate molecules in my mind's eye... but only up to 4 atoms. Sure, I can imagine things much more complex than that. I just can't "see" them in their entire complexity at once. So, here is my question: what is the most complicated thing YOU can visualize and rotate in your mind's eye and what do you think determines the level of complexity you can "see"?http://thistoolslife.blogspot.com/2009/10/limit-of-our-minds-eye.html

Project in mind. Need ideas for simplicity.

I have a project in mind. I have children with a pet cat. I intend to build a charcoal filtering for a catbox/cat tree I am building. I want to use an alarm clock (easy to adjust time if needed) to activate maybe a buzzer and flashing light daily for box cleaning. The fan runs at a low speed constantly at the top of a vent tube to keep the smell controlled.  I want an input to reset the buzzer/flashing light when the drawer with the litter box is opened. I have no idea how to build the circuit. I tested the filter system on a mockup box. It works fine cat doesn't notice the fan. (its 3ft up a 3" piece of PVC). The lack of smell is the reason I'll need a reminder. I could purchase an industrial programmable relay but cost is a huge factor and buying an added power supply etc for control voltage adds up. I have an industrial electrical background and no problem working with small circuitry but have never designed anything so hints and help will be appreciated.

(PS: This is me :-) )I might be older than dirt but those memories are the best part of my life.'Senility Prayer'...God grant me...The senility to forget the people I never liked; The good fortune to run into the ones that I do,And the eyesight to tell the difference.''Hey Dad,' one of my kids asked the other day, 'What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up ? ' 'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him. 'All the food was slow.''C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat ?''It was a place called 'at home, I explained. 'Grandma cooked every day and when Grandpa got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.'By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it:Some parents NEVER owned their own house (my Dad did, it cost him $14,000 for a 3 bedroom rancher), wore Levis , set foot on a golf course, traveled out of the country or had a credit card. In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck. Or maybe it was Sears AND Roebuck. Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died.My parents never drove me to soccer practice. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow). We didn't have a television in our house until I was 8. It was, of course, black and white, but they bought a piece of colored plastic to cover the screen. The top third was blue, like the sky, and the bottom third was green, like grass. The middle third was red. It was perfect for programs that had scenes of fire trucks riding across someone's lawn on a sunny day. Some people had a lens taped to the front of the TV to make the picture look larger. I was 14 before I tasted my first pizza, it was called 'pizza pie.' When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against my chin and burned that, too. It's still the best pizza I ever had.We didn't have a car until I was 9. Before that, the only car in our family was my grandfather's Ford. He called it a 'machine.' It started by pushing a button on the dashboard. I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line.Pizzas were not delivered to our home. But milk was.All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers. I delivered a newspaper, six days a week. It cost 7 cents a paper, of which I got to keep 2 cents. I had to get up at 4 AM every morning.. On Saturday, I had to collect the 42 cents from my customers. My favorite customers were the ones who gave me 50 cents and told me to keep the change. My least favorite customers were the ones who seemed to never be home on collection day.Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies. Touching someone else's tongue with yours was called French kissing and they didn't do that in movies. I don't know what they did in French movies. French movies were dirty and we weren't allowed to see them.Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it ?MEMORIES from a friend:My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old.

Inspirational posters typically show some natural wonder or athlete along with some inane puffery underneath it. You know the type. "TEAMWORK: Together we kick the losers down!" and other nonsense. So it's nice to see what art students do when they make posters to inspire the first-years. At University College Falmouth, each first-year gets a free poster designed by a graduate. Design and the Elastic Mind @ MOMA until May 12

I just stumbled across this wonderful exhibition at the MOMA in NY, which will be running until May 12. If you browse the online exhibit, you'll see a bunch of technologies and artworks that have graced these pages previously, but there's tonnes more of Really Cool Stuff - definitely worth passing by if you happen to be in New York...Design and the Elastic Mind, February 24-May 12, 2008View the Online Exhibit! In the past few decades, individuals have experienced dramatic changes in some of the most established dimensions of human life: time, space, matter, and individuality. Working across several time zones, traveling with relative ease between satellite maps and nanoscale images, gleefully drowning in information, acting fast in order to preserve some slow downtime, people cope daily with dozens of changes in scale. Minds adapt and acquire enough elasticity to be able to synthesize such abundance. One of design's most fundamental tasks is to stand between revolutions and life, and to help people deal with change. Designers have coped with these displacements by contributing thoughtful concepts that can provide guidance and ease as science and technology evolve. Several of them—the Mosaic graphic user's interface for the Internet, for instance—have truly changed the world. Design and the Elastic Mind is a survey of the latest developments in the field. It focuses on designers' ability to grasp momentous changes in technology, science, and social mores, changes that will demand or reflect major adjustments in human behavior, and convert them into objects and systems that people understand and use.The exhibition will highlight examples of successful translation of disruptive innovation, examples based on ongoing research, as well as reflections on the future responsibilities of design. Of particular interest will be the exploration of the relationship between design and science and the approach to scale. The exhibition will include objects, projects, and concepts offered by teams of designers, scientists, and engineers from all over the world, ranging from the nanoscale to the cosmological scale. The objects range from nanodevices to vehicles, from appliances to interfaces, and from pragmatic solutions for everyday use to provocative ideas meant to influence our future choices.

Master Minds Only (Coffee Mug "Forget me Not"

I am looking to design a coffee mug that reminds the user via a speaker attached to the door in some way, that they are leaving the house without their coffee.  The project will need a sensor at the door that can recognize a sensor built into the mug, I'm thinking Thermos style yet able to fit in a normal sized cup holder, that can be machine washed without damaging the inside components. (The design can have an attachable bottom to hold the hardware and battery source, so the main part is machine washable.)  And an additional sensor is needed on the users car keys to recognize the user is leaving the house. when both the mug sensor and the key sensor pass at the same time  a "have a nice day _______user name_____" voice recording plays when only the key sensor goes past the door receiver a " ____User name____ is forgetting their coffee" voice recording plays  My questions are for what type of sensors will I need to purchase in order to create this project? and how would I set up the code to recognize the combination of sensors vs. the single sensors by passing the door sensor? Thank you for your help Indestructable community

"Fly Eye" Goggles design concept - 360 Degree vision?

I've been doing some reading recently on how the mind can adapt and change it's perception of reality to accommodate new sensory inputs - like the glasses for the blind that turn visual data into sound patterns and the compass belt that helped give people an innate sense of direction.  My idea was to take a series of small webcams and arrange them on a headband so that they cover a 360 degree panorama around the wearer, then join all the images together and feed it to a set of video goggles. Initially I imagine it would be very disorientating, but hopefully after a while the wearer's mind would start to compensate for the distortion, giving them panoramic vision. I assume the various feeds from the webcams would have to be routed through a computer to process them into a single image, but I'm not sure how that could be done on a software level. Thoughts? Ideas? Help? Warnings? All appreciated. Thanks once again.

.9 Repeating Equals 1?

HI! I am wondering if .999...=1? I mean if 1/3=.333 and 1/3+1/3+1/3=3/3 and 3/3=1. So wouldn't .333...+.333...+.333...=1? But it actually equals .999... not 1. I googled this question and I got many different answers ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For example...(someone wrote): I'm not really into math, but a friend brought something up to me today that really seemed very strange. (For the duration of this post, .999 will mean .9 repeating unless otherwise specified- just for the sake of ease) .999=x 10x=9.999 10x - x = 9x 9x=9 1x=1. .999 = 1. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Someone else wrote: Numbers are fake. They are a manifestation of our minds to describe something, similar to words. Just because we say "red" doesn't mean something is red. what is red? Languages and math are very similar. Math is universal...at least for our planet though. .999~ does not = 1. But what .999~ repeating represents, does in fact equal what 1 represents. No-one will ever be able to comprehend infinity, os its time to stop trying. Think of space and the universe. IT IS GROWING. how can it continue to grow with no stop? what is there to contain it? WE need something to contain it in order for us to understand it. We need a stopping point, but there is none. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So who is correct? Do you agree that .999...=1? Or .999... does not equal 1?

Where can a total beginner go to get learn electronics and schematics specifically with audio projects in mind? Answered

I'd really like to get into the electronic side of music, but have no idea where to start. Some of the projects here are very interesting, particularly those that have to do with sound creation and modulation. My end goal is to be able to design my own circuits for analog amps, guitar pedals, and perhaps even synthesizers and vocoders. However, for now I don't have any idea of how electronics work, nor where to start. I've been told that kits might help, but does anybody have any specific places to start? I'd love to learn basic electronic theory, but especially how certain components create or change sounds. Thanks!

Three Sided Truth

Global Consciousness Project – Long Term ExperimentI've been watching the GCP for over 4 years. I would like to create a permanent visual installation based on acquired data from the EGG database. The installation will be a tetrahedron, displaying past, present, and the "so-called" probable data. No explanation of what the display portrays. Mysterious as it will be, time and historical data will stir subconscious minds to recognize patterns. I believe this is the perfect device that will develop questions within closed minds and thus in time, answers.Read up on GCP here: Princeton GCPI have a physical design in mind for the installation. I would like to lead the creative task force for creating such a device. I'm wondering if I can find people here that would be interested in helping with the internal electrical and mechanical engineering that will be needed to operate the device. Serious minds needed only. This is a long-term project possibly taking several months to a year to complete. Funding will be provided once the preliminary concept is thoroughly defined. I would like to see that these devices are scattered across the globe and placed in highly visible areas. The domain name ThreeSidedTruth.com has been registered for this project. I hope to find some interested minds.threesidedtruth@gmail.com~ Demannu
