Mobile Phones and Elevators

Ahem. Theoretically, an elevator is a perfect faraday cage -- no radio waves should be able to get into them. Mobile phones shouldn't work in them. But rogers says that their phones do work in them. So here's my question for you, instructables community: do rogers phones work in elevators? If so, why?The only theory that we could come up with was that each elevator has a little repeater in it, but that seems a bit costly.

Mobile phone screamer?

Has anyone got a schematic or instructions for making a noise generator I can attach to my cell phone through the mike/earphone jack? I am getting a lot of "junk" calls with faked return numbers, who will not remove me from their call lists and typically call 3-5 times a day, even at night. My provider (AllTel) says there's nothing they can do to help me block calls with bogus or "unavailable" return numbers. OK, I admit this is more for my own sense of justice than anything else, but I'd sure like to have some sort of oscillator that would generate enough volume at a high pitch to at least give them a nice headache.

To Whomever has the ability to make this available, please, please, please seriously consider making the website mobile phone friendly. When I try to view the site on my Droid smartphone it is difficult because of the way the text displays.  I love instructables and I also do a lot of web viewing on my phone.  It would be nice if it were not so difficult. Steampunk Mobile

Some great ideas come from taking a completely new gadget and making it something that looks like, and in this case sort of works like, something from the 19th century. This steampunk cell phone concept has no display. No 3G. No data plan. No games. It doesn't even have a dial pad. You make your calls with binary-coded punch cards, steampunk. All you get in this rugged brown package is an earpiece, (possibly faux) gauges, visible screws, and a spinning number-counter. Oh, and a hole punch every time you want to order a pizza. The project was developed for O2, aiming at the RPG player market (really!). I don't think it works. It would be cool if it did, but I don't think so...UnplggdOriginal designer

Car Phone

No, not a phone in a car--a phone that is a car, or at least looks like one. This car is a converted VW Beetle that is being used to promote a phone company. I think this may be even more exciting to see on the road than the sheepdog from the movie Dumb and Dumber.Link via TechEBlog

Is that your ring phoning?

Here's half an idea - a ring that displays text messages. It might look like nothing more than a ring at first glance, but this finger-worn device can sync with your mobile phone. It has a vibratory alert and a tiny screen that shows caller ID, text messages, and meeting reminders from your mobile. Flip it open and it converts into a headset. In the image, the screen looks glued on, but I guess that it could easily be a small piece of epaper.  As for being an ear-piece, I can't see how it would end up large enough to be comfortable or practical, yet still start off small enough to wear as a ring. Now, if the some idea was expanded to a bangle, then an entire phone could be built into a bracelet small and slim enough to be discrete. Now the embarrassing bit: I got this story off MSN...

Mobile phone signal Detector

I want to know if there is any 'mobile phone signal detector' already available in the market. The purpose is to find if anybody is using mobile phone for calls or messaging at restricted places. Jammers are not fine as some are exempted from making calls etc.. If there is nothing like that available, how to make one to detect the signal or even the phone from which the signal was emitted. Usually when we are about to receive a call or sms and if we are near a Speaker we get a specific noise through speaker, or if we are near a monitor (CRT) it flickers.  So I am sure there are ways to find this signal emission. Please suggest the options to do this....

Cheap phone cards with no expiration?

Whats the best (and by best I mean cheapest) calling card I can get that doesn't have an expiration. I only need 30 or so minutes. I want to be able to call international (middle east) from my cell phone (T-mobile prepaid) without being charged ridiculous amounts. I want something that i can leave in my wallet for a year and not have to worry about it being expired when I need it. The picture is totally unrelated, its a windmill

Reuse of old mobile

I am using a mobile phone  tracker site to track my car in case it is stolen.  I wanted to adapt the old mobile phone by stripping it down to essentials to ensure that the sim signal was still running but there was no need for the display / keyboard.  Is there an instructable or website that offers advice on how to do that? The phones are old nokia phones so not worried if they get trashed.

Mobile pc communications

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this so i'm sorry if its not. I am looking to control a set of switches using an old mobile phone connected to my PC. Sending a text message to the phone would let you do various things depending on the text message content. I don't even know if this would be possible but it is something I am looking to do and this seems to be one of the solutions (if possible) to what I need to do. If anyone else can help me with a way to control anything remotely without a wireless Internet connection, possibly even if its only 3G/EDGE/HSDPA Thanks

Mobile phone wind generator

Hi at school, I am making a mobile phone generator. It's only GCSE so my apologies for my lack of knowledge. It is meant to be a "wind generator" but it can basically be a renewable generator via motion. So since I get to take it home afterwards I designed it to be a little record player where you turned the platter and it would change a phone. This is where I need some help. Would this 24v motor provide enough juice to charge a lithium ion battery (with a boost or buck converter [if needed to step down to an appropriate voltage] then a constant current protection circuit etc) the output 5v to charge your phone? Here is the motor: http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/products/2483716/?grossPr...|pcrid|88056614883|pkw||pmt||prd|2483716&gclid;=CjwKEAiA4dPCBRCM4dqhlv2R1R8SJABom9pHi1B_sRuR-4nr15ce-EWd51aCsEfYqFBsUJioUXEpvRoC1unw_wcB Thanks! For non-British readers :  a GCSE is (in the UK except Scotland) a qualification in a specific subject typically taken by school students aged 14–16, at a level below A level.

Prepaid phone hacks?

Ok guys (and all you female hacks out there) I've got a question that I need help answering. Does anyone know if it would be possible to completely wipe a phones programming to be able to install an operating system on it ? The phone that I'm working with is a virgin mobile prepaid Super slice that got washed in the washing machine and is unable to be reactivated( trust me I've tried everything!) I would probably have to find a pretty darn small operating system, because I know that even damn small linux is too large and won't work. The phone is completely intact and all of the features work (including the camera ) it's just that I can't activate it so it's prety much useless unless I can turn it into some kind of micro-small-computer of some sorts. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. and just so you have a bit of info, the phone I believe has somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/4 of a megabyte of memory and an unknown amount of ram. Thanks in advance for any replies.

turning a pc on via mobile phone

Would it possible to wire the speaker of a mobile phone to the on/off of a standard pc so you could turn it on with a simple phone call? Not exactly a burning question but the idea has been floating around in my head for a while now, but i'm no closer to investigating.. Being completely devoid of network attached storage, that would be the next best way to access my files or store stuff when not at home without leaving the pc on all the time.. when finished it can be turned off via VNC or logmein. I've tried all ways to get wake on lan working of course, but can't stop the fans from running even when in standby/hibernation, and lately i can't even get it to stay in that mode without booting straight back into xp.. cheers in advance! ade

Solar charging in mobile (cell) phones.

While sitting in the glorious sunshine outside a local pub Sunday on afternoon it struck me that although there are a lot of solar charging options available as add ons I have never seen a phone with solar cells built in. I could understand it when all the phone companies were making their products smaller & smaller with every new line but now our phones have huge screens the phones are once again getting large & it seems to me that there is a great deal of wasted space that could accommodate strips of solar cells. My own phone has around 15 square cm of space around the outside alone, added to that there is around 42 square cm of space on the back that could be made use of for something more useful than the manufacturers logo. I wouldn't expect to dispense with the wall wart altogether but surely it would help to extend the sometimes pitiful life of our mobile technology if it could gather a little energy from the sun. Any ideas why this isn't being included by the likes of Apple, Samsung & the other manufacturers folks? preferably in terms a non electronics expert can understand :-)

Beginning Mobile App Programming? Answered

I was teaching my kids software development. I haven't been in the field for quite some time and was wondering what would be the most appropriate choice for mobile development. For instance, I want to keep Verizon, purchase X, Y or Z phone and be capable of installing custom apps/software/whatever [so we may use GPS capabilities]. They've gone over scripting, c++ and do extremely well with c#, XNA and oop in general. We currently have a Blackberry, but we'd like to know what other options are out there so they may jump into without much knowledge of the interface. Mac products not even considered.

How to make a cell phone dead zone box?

To test an application under conditions where the carrier's signal drops (someone driving into a tunnel for instance), I'm curious if there's some sort of box available (or easy enough to make) that I could put the phone into and close it, effectively blocking out the carrier's signal and dropping the call. Cell / mobile phone signal relay.

I work in a building with a metal roof that is also in a small valley. We have absolutely no reception inside the building. Outside we have about 4 to 5 bars, inside there are none. Maybe one if you are near a window. The building is mainly one large open space on the side. I was wondering if it might be possible to passively "pipe in" cell phone reception. I was thinking of a large antenna on the roof that would be connected to a smaller antenna affixed to the middle of the ceiling of the main room. I know the antennas would need to be tuned to the correct bandwidths and I would need a little help with that. (Our carrier is Verizon in the USA btw). Would this sort of setup be feasible?
