Modifying STL's

I am looking for a cheap, preferably free, program or suggested work flow to make changes or additions to a STL. The particular interest right now is a small mouse that I download from Thingiverse that I'd like to add a block letter to. Something I'm trying to do for an event at my dog club. I want to print it in green with a block "Q" on its rump. I have windows 7 and 8.1 along with Linux Mint and will soon have an Afinia printer. Thanks in advance for any pointers, Curt

coin modifying laws?

So my friends and I are planning to sell, well...things (I'm not going to give out any details as of now, later) that incorporate small round metal disks. now in all of our prototypes weve used coins for our purposes and they work great. but for what we make we need to cut and sand coins in different ways. and my friends always tell me "its illegal to change money in any way." But I've heard that its only illegal to modify money to change or duplicate the amount its worth - like making a penny into a dime is illegal but making a penny pac man figure isnt. can anyone clarify this for me? I'm fine doing illegal things like modifying coins for personal use but if were going to sell these I want to be a little more clear as to what is going on.

Reinforce/modify polyester?

I am currently working on a project that uses polycaprolactone because it has a low melting point and is easily moldable. The problem is once it has been molded and cooled it is sometimes too thin to be as firm as I need it to be and will bend when force is applied. Is there some way to mix the polycaprolactone with another substance to make it more firm without sacrificing much of its moldability or altering its melting point much? If not, is there another material with similar properties that I can substitute?

Now transform this!

This is the most useless piece of wasted technology ever; the "men's groomer" "as seen on tv" !!!!!! I've bought two of these, planning to build from them something more useful, that is a circular etcher / drill and a sort of sliding saw, to etch / smooth / saw materials like hardened paperclay, glass, balsa wood and terracotta; but surely I've presumed to be smarter than I'm in electronics..... So I'm stuck with these two pieces of useless stuff in hand; do you know how to get an etcher and a saw from these? I'm sure there're many smart guys here. This may be one of the smartest instructables ever.

Need help modifying project? Answered

Hey guys, I need help modifying a project. The schematics are provided and i need to keep only the bass part of the color organ (in red). How would I go about removing the other part of the circuit and powering an 16 inch long green led strip instead? Can anybody provide me an edited schematic of the project with the other part of the circuit removed and the transistor connections made for powering the led strip? Oh and someone was saying in the project video that the polarity of a few components are wrong, can someone point that out too? Help will be GREATLY appreciated. Note: If you know that bass is low mid or high frequency please tell that too because i have a feeling that i have circled the wrong part of the schematic. The part I have circled is for low frequencies which i THINK is bass. Another Note: The LED strip is green, 12v, 16 inch long and the flexible type. I dont really know the power consumption but i think that a 1 amp transistor will be enough. (Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJlglHS2w74) Thanks in advance. -Prickly Potato

Modifying LED puck lights

I apologize in advance for the complicated question, but here we go. I have wireless puck lights that work off either pushing the top to click on, or a wireless switch. The switch only controls on and off, no color control or brightness. The lights run off 3 AAA batteries per puck. My problem (which seems to be the most common problem with these puck lights) is that they drain the batteries even when off. I have a feeling the drain is due to the wireless antenna staying open to receive the signal from the switch. I found using a 5V USB plug powers them fine, but I don't want any draw to occur when the lights are off. So my 2 questions are... 1. Has anyone encountered a device like this and found a way to disable or even remove the wireless antenna only allowing the LEDs to work off the internal switch? 2. Does anyone know a way to bypass the switch so the lights are powered when power is present? My goal is to have the lights run off the 5V adapter with an inline switch to control the line up. vs. clicking each light on one at a time. I have attached images of the board top and bottom, also the lights are "Lightmates LED Wireless Puck Lights" notorious for eating batteries.

Thoughts on modifying a mower to a dethatcher?

Briefly, my lawn is a mess and I cannot afford either an electric rake or dethatcher. I have tried using a spring-tined rake to dethatch the lawn but it is too labour-intensive - and I have around 250m2 to cover - not for the faint-hearted! However, I do have a petrol rotary lawn mower and a spare blade. I have thought of combining the spring-tined rake to the blade to dethatch that way. I don't mind the thatch not being collected - as I expect it will leave the mess on the floor - I can simply dethatch at a higher blade height and then cut/pick up the mess on a lower blade setting. I don't have a welding machine, nor access to one. So I wondered if the good people here might lend me their brain cells to consider (a) what I might use as a rake on the blade and (b) how to secure it on to the blade. I have seen one of those rakes which can be spread at will and I thought to size it and secure it with a metal band and rivets - and then rivet the whole thing to the blade. What do you think? I had also thought that I could fix the rake on the opposite side of the blade. The blade is not reversable/obversable - there is a one-way key that oreints the blade to one position only. Please do not trouble yourselves with warnings about safety etc as I think I am aware enough to consider this for myself - unless it is to say "don't do it". I also know about having to balance the blade weight. As ever, thanks for reading me and thanks for your time to reply.

Making/Modifying a USB Hub

I'm currently designing an accessory for my computer which will house 4 USB ports as a USB Hub.  The issue i've got is I need to be able to contain the whole USB Hub in an area that is only 22mm deep and 170mm wide.   I've taken a cheap USB Hub apart to see what it was like and I have run into a few issues. The main one is that the total depth of the PCB to the end of the USB Ports is 35mm, 13mm over the size I need.  The next issue is that I need room to place a screw between the USB Ports, 2 either side.  These screws have a width of 3mm and a head size of 5mm.    Putting a hole like that in the PCB would break and short the connections. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Modifying a Singing Greeting Card

A while ago my wife got one of those singing Hallmark greeting cards. (This particular one played the Law and Order theme song) Well after a while it no longer played the song. I opened it up and found that there is a circuit board inside with a 3v button cell battery attached to it. I removed the board and the speaker and the battery and I'm pretty sure that I could attach wires to the two contact points and connect them to batteries that would complete the circuit and allow the theme song to play again. What I want to know is if I need to take any special consideration when putting in a new battery(s). I was going to try to just put two AA batteries in series (1.5v +1.5v =3v, right?) but I don't actually know anything about electronics and so I wanted to ask here if there were any resistors needed or if there were any differences between the button cell and the AA batteries that would require me to do something different. While we're on the topic of these cards I just thought of a neat project. Design some sort of holder for the circuit boards that would allow them to act as sort of an interchangeable cartridge. Basically detach the speaker wires and battery contacts from various boards out of various cards and design some sort of holder with contacts for the speaker and power source at the appropriate points and be able to change out the different boards. Not really practical but sounds like fun.I just thought of yet another question!Would there be anyway to hook the board up to some sort of audio cable (in place of the speaker maybe) so that I could plug these into a computer and record the song off of the board in a digital format. (Again not very practical but sounds like fun.)Anyway, this is my first post here and I'm sorry if it's a bit jumbled but I don't have a very organized mind and sometimes it's hard to put my ideas down in a succinct manner. I tend to just ramble on incessantly in a train of thought sort of manner until I think that I've said what I think I wanted to say. In closing, I like this site and plan to be around for a while and learn as much as I can. If somebody would like to help me with these ideas/projects I would be happy to provide pictures of the circuit board and pieces that I have if it's necessary.Thanks.~JoshI'm using two AA batteries. I have a wire between the positive side of B1 and the negative side of B2 and wires coming off the open ends. I tried connecting the batteries from the spot where the negative side of the button cell was to the silver rectangle thinking that that would complete the circuit and make music. That didn't work. Then I noticed that the positive connection for the circuit was actually where the clip that secured the battery was before I removed it and that the positive and negative sides of the battery were going through a capacitor before touching the final contact. so I tried placing the positive wire up on the positive contact and then placing a wire from the positive contact to the final contact but that also didn't work. I don't have any solder and have been using electrical tape to secure the wires. The wires are a fairly thin (I don't know the gauge) stranded copper. I'm not sure if the wires aren't making good contact or if I'm just doing something wrong.

Challenge: Reynolds vacuum sealer retrofit

Reynolds just put out a new vacuum sealer device for about $10.Vacuum Sealer home pageIt's a pretty neat device, but they've designed it with a flared nose and special bags rather than the small tube most vacuum sealers have. I'd like to be able to use this with regular zip-lock bags without destroying it's ability to work with the custom Reynold's bags. Anyone got an easy retrofit mod for the tip or other suggestion.A bonus ability would be to be able to use it with bags products come in, assuming they only have a small hole. For example, if I opened a bag of nuts or chips, and used a wire sealer to close the bag, I'd like to be able to put a hole in the re-sealed bag and then draw out all the air. The way some sealers do this is by having a circular flap over the hole which allows air out, but closes the hole to prevent air from getting back in. The stretchy gummy material used by magazines to hold samples and inserts would probably work well for this.I think this is an interesting product with lots of possibilities beyond the kitchen. Unlike most vacuum devices which are not portable or designed for cleaning, this one is compact and moddable. I'd like to hear other creative ideas how it could be used.

how to modify laptop power jack?

So hey there instructablers! I had a laptop with a loose power jack and a bad battery that was working perfect but when i moved the charger a little bit it was losing contact so it was turning off. One day i decided to rip apart the laptop and see if i could fix it. I opened it only to find that the jack had completely come out of the board! So i came up with the idea to solder the charger wires directly to the board without a jack. It seems possible, right? But i got into a problem! I couldn't find which of the remain lead was the positive and negative. I have attached a photo and i have circled the jack lead and number them. If anybody could help me buy explaining me which lead does what i would appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

YOU decide the mod for my new speakers!

Hey I just got the speakers I am going to use for college next year and I was wondering what I should do to them... This is where you come in (if anyone responds or even looks at this). I am interested in modifying my new Logitech X-140 speakers, but I don't quite know what to do with them just yet. I have thought about either spray painting them crimson and cream, or hiding them in some books, like I did with my speaker book (portable), except I would keep the speakers intact so I could remove them if I felt like it. If you have any ideas on what I should do with them, post the ideas here, and if I like your idea (or I think I am capable of completing your idea) I will try to complete it. Your idea doesn't have to be well thought out, just a general idea will inspire me. This will also become an instructable (whichever path I choose). In the instructable, I will also include my source of inspiration.

Help with modifying a servo for continuous rotation?

I want to build a robot with arduino and for the motors I was going to use some servos that I could modify for continuous rotation.  So, I picked up 2 cheap ones at radioshack.  I opened them up and I can get to the gears by removing the top part and I can get to the back of the circuit board by taking off the bottom.  But the circuit board is soldered in so I can't take it out to get to the potentiometer. I tried desoldering the connections to the motor but there seems to be more joints to desolder before I can take out the circuit board completely. And I don't want to desolder every joint and then have to solder them again when I need to put them back together.  So has anyone modified these radioshack servos and can tell me how to get tho the potentiometer? Or can anyone tell me if there is a way to modify them without getting to the potentiometer? Thanks.
