Meat Free Mondays

San Francisco joins communities across the world in observing Meat-Free Mondays.  Too bad no one told us. Apparently back in April the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved legislation declaring the first day of the week meat-free Mondays, now known as Vegetarian Day or Veg Day. Supposedly, the legislation urges “all restaurants, grocery stores and schools to offer a greater variety of plant-based options to improve the health of San Francisco residents and visitors and to increase the awareness of the impact a green diet would be on our planet.” Consider awareness. . . unaffected. This seems like something that would be plastered all over San Francisco buses, sign posts, and veg-friendly shops.  Did I miss the flier at the co-op?  Probably.  Nonetheless, just as banning plastic bags took hold (uh, sort of), I'm sure the wave of Meat-Free Monday observers is sure to swell and sweep the city by storm.  I'll let you know when the falafel shop steals all the Monday business from the burger shop downstairs.  Actually. . .  it's the same shop.  So maybe they are onto something after all. via: the sf examiner

Could someone give me information and advice on vegetarianism?

I would like some advice on vegetarianism. Could someone give me a pro and con on veg diet compared to a meat diet, with vegetarianism can one achieve the right amount of proteins and minerals for the body without vitamins or supplements? Is it healthy, or healthier then a meat diet? Can the same effect be caused on a "meatless Monday" diet of food. And does it fit for me; I'm 6 foot, 195 pounds, 15 years old, very active(running, basketball, swimming). Just interested on the health effects it could cause.

The Frozen Treats Contest is starting Monday, 7/8!

There may be few ways to escape the heat this summer, but at least you can cope with it by eating yummy frozen treats. All you need to do to enter is to throw some (edible) concoctions together and stick them in the freezer. That's right! The freezer can be used as more than just a tool for standing in front of. Your freezer can also be used to make ice cream, gelato, frozen yogurt, ice pops, smoothies, and other icy forms of goodness. Break free of the hegemony of the Hagaan-Daz-Industrial-Complex, and combat this sweltering summer with your own frigidly frozen snacks. By sharing the delicious ways you keep cool, you are entering to win an ice cream maker, waffle cone maker, and loads of other fun prizes. Simply post a Step-By-Step, Photo or Video Instructable that explains to us how you made your frozen treat. We look forward to seeing (and trying!) all of your amazing entries (because this heat is killing us). Check out the contest page to see all the details.

The I Could Make That Contest begins Monday, 7/29

You know you're a maker when you disdainfully pooh-pooh an off-the-shelf product and say, "Pffft, I could totally make one of those." A $2000 table made of 2x6s? That's a quick miter saw project. A funky knit Batman cowl for $50? Call me knit-picky, but that shouldn't be tough to duplicate. A $300 print dress from Anthro? Grab the Singer and get humming. An RFID door lock? Fire up the soldering iron and sketch out some code. Whether you saw it in a catalog, online, or in a shop, we want to reward your commitment to keeping things low-cost and self-reliant. You can make that, and now we're giving you another reason to try. Show us your best reverse-engineered, knocked-off, product-inspired copycat project to win the kinds of things you would be hard-pressed to make on your own: a Galaxy Nexus tablet or an Olympus digital camera. Check out the official contest page for more info! Keep in mind that no food will be allowed - we have a Copycat Recipes Contest coming up soon! Contest is open 7/29 - 10/21.

First Tuesday Following the First Monday of November is Fast Approaching

First, I'm not pushing any ideas on you - that's your job. For those of us in the United States, next Tuesday is election day. Surprisingly, some people don't even know this. If you're realizing that "Hey, I'm not sure what's going to be on said ballot," now (or even this weekend) is a good time to sit down for a little bit and research/find the people you feel speak and represent you.The resource I happen to use is http://www.vote-smart.org . They do not accept any funding for corporations, PACs, or any organization that supports/opposes an issue/candidate. The service is free (all you need to know is your 9 digit zip code). The site lists the current candidates, the challengers and a whole lot of information about them (experience, voting records, candidate websites, etc.). You also ought to look at any amendments that will be on your ballot -- the wording can be quite tricky (In the last vote, FL had one amendment against the amendment not to build a monorail train* -1) so you probably want to make sure you are in fact voting for what you want ;)So, please take the time to vote next Tuesday. Staying home is NOT speaking out against "the man" or showing your disdain for the system, the person, the amendment on the ballot. I am personally driving four hours to my voting place - it's really that important...Again, I have the utmost respect for those with different views than my own and the same for those that share mine. I'm not pushing any idea on you (other than to actually vote) - I just want to put it out there that its that time of the every other year again :P

Windows 2000 running from USB stick, need done by monday

I looked over google for this, but i dont get any of it. The idea is: My school have the best Web-Filtering system, SWGfL, and have RM connect, and the IT guys installed Win XP on all the PC's, by USB stick, which i figured when the PC wouldnt boot with my memory stick in. Knowing this hack, i want to know how to install Windows 2000 onto my 1 gig USB stick and have it boot on any USB-boot enabled PC. No one suggest linux, cause its obvious im running linux and i would get banned from the school PC's for a bit, or an Afterschool at the least, and because my account on the schools lets me change my background picture (My pics: Right click, Set desktop.....) and i seem to be one of the only ones that can, and because the high contrast lets you choose win classic for a theme (cause they disabled the display control). All in short...... I want Win 2000 to boot from my USB stick, let me change the background, and have it run on my school PC's. NO LINUX!! I have a sort of grudge against it aswell as the fact my ICT teacher saw me use Ubuntu once and said "Youre only allowed to use Windows on theese pc's" He never said which one. BTW: Everyone knows i can change my BG, even our schools admin, and they know i like having the theme as windows classic. And i need this USB windows ready by Monday, my deadline.............please dont read and not respond, and dont link me to pages you find off google, they dont make sense to me.
