Tongue and mouth model.

I work at a speech training center, and I need to illustrate how to make certain sounds. I thought the best way was to use an adjustable tongue and cheek model. Doesn't have to be a real replica of a tongue, just something to illustrate the tongue and cheek positions for different sounds. Needs to be adjustable. Any ideas? Thanks.

Big Mouth Billy Bass Mod?

hey guys i just found an unused "Big Mouth Billy Bass" singing fish thing in my attic and i was just wondering if anyone has/knows how to mod it to possibly play a pre-recorded message, possibly off an mp3 player? i want to make like a security device out of it, utilizing its motion-sensitive singing i figured someone out there might know how to hack it to play something other than the horribly obnoxious music it comes programmed with. thanks in advance!

Holy moley! Pneumatic mouth cannon!

I don't know how much more random fun you can find. I discovered this while at a buffet with my girlfriend and her brother on his birthday. Anyway, I was finished after two plates and a salad, and was balling the straw wrapper between my fingers. A tiny piece, probably a half-inch by a half-inch, ripped off in my hands. Staring at this little fragment, I put down the rest of the wrapper. I balled up the fragment, and put it between my fingers in such a manner that when I blew, it sent the fragment flying at great velocity. Thank God no one noticed or was killed. I have yet to chronograph this little amazing scientific breakthrough, but I estimate about 25 fps. Cool, huh? Anyway, rip off a tiny corner of a napkin or straw wrapper. Ball it up. Touch your thumb and index fingers on both hands together like you're rubbing something off of them. Put the tips of them together, and there should be a little diamond-ish hole between the four fingers. That's where the ball of paper goes. Put the ball in that hole, and pinch gently. Put your lips up to the hole, and blow. If nothing comes out, good! Blow to ready this little weapon, and release the pinch of your fingers to fire. Awesome, huh?

Any ideas for an "in mouth" voice mangler (NOT electronic)? Answered

I want to make scary inhuman sounds as part of a costume. So I can't hold things up to my face or use any electronics. Has anyone got any ideas? (Other than me ending up with a sore throat from screeching unnatural sounds.) I'm thinking of something like a whistle I can bite/hold with my lips and blow through but whistling isn't very scary and most whistles don't work in reverse. Or like when you trap a blade of grass taut in between your thumbs and blow, but would need to be "manufactured" so I don't need to hold my hands up.

How to hack a Big Mouth Billy Bass with arduino?

I was wondering how to hack a Big Mouth Billy Bass so that he sings a different song than the ones he comes with. And I want him to have different movements so that he moves to the beat. More specifically, I want him to sing these songs and move like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ib3HlJSGmQ4 I know how to solder, and I have worked with singing fish before. I know how to switch circuit boards, but I would like to try Arduino.

I want to make special braces (mouth guard) in translucent plastic. I think I know how to make the molds based on the instructlab videos, but are there safety issues if I use plastic that is commercially available? What kind of plastic resins are used by dentists for making their braces? Where can I purchase them?

Thank you for the gift horse! Hey, what's that in its mouth?

A few months ago I entered an instructable that placed in both the Robot Challenge and the Make it Real challenge and have been having some, well, odd experiences with the prizes.  I've received all of the Robot challenge prizes, plus some. I was sent an extra pocket oscilloscope and arduino uno! O.o That's about $200 in extra loot and I would think you would like me to return it. I sent an email about this to service@instructables.com last week, but have yet to get a response. As for the Make it Real prize, I went back and forth with info@instructables.com for about a month and eventually was linked some kind of e-document for me to e-sign. That was about two weeks ago and I haven't heard anything since. I know you all have had some kind of re-organizing in the prize department, is the dust still settling? I certainly don't mind the wait, but when I got the double prize pack I felt that I should come here and let you know, as this is the only contact option I haven't tried. BTW: thanks again for the prizes, it has been a huge boon for me. I hope we can get all this recombobulated.

What is your favourite canker sore (mouth ulcer) home remedy?

There is no medical proven procedure to HEAL canker sores - only goop that makes them numb (yay this-or-that-ocaine) I hate having a numb mouth because then I end up biting the sore and making it last LONGER. So far I've found warm salt water rinse (antiseptic, painful); drink tea (antioxidants do something); gently chew on a used tea bag (makes pain go away a bit); good dental hygene, brown sugar directly applied... any other tricks work for anyone?

i am looking for a switch with microprocessor to operate a servo motor. to use in a puppet or costume character head ?

The servo would be used to move eyes, eyelids and possibly the mouth. Basically I want to operate a servo without using a radio control unit Space and weight are limited. I am a pro puppetmaker and know this kind of device would be very useful. The motors would be operated by a switch in the puppets mouth. In the case of a costume character I want to put a push switch in the perfromers hand and have them operate the mouth.

food for teeth ?

Hello. I've heard that teeth were able to absorb some substances/molecules thanks to the porosity of the enamel. Unlike bones, as they are not self-regenerating from the outside, I was wondering what substances may be usefull to offset the erosion of the enamel (remineralization ?). Is there something that could be concidered as a "food" for teeth ? Also, about dental caries, as they are mainly caused by bacteria eating "fermentable carbohydrates" who generate acidity, here is a question that may sound stupid, but that is serious : - to make the work of those bacteria harder, is it better to sleep with the mouth wide opened (oxygened mouth) or with the mouth closed (anaerobic conditions) ?

How could I build a mask that can breath out fog?

I am wondering if there is a way to make a mask with some sort of built in 'fog machine' of sorts. A way that I can breath out a fog like vapor from the mouth of the mask that is safe to breath in. I intend on making the mouth of the mask able to open and close by attaching the bottom jaw to my jaw to allow it to open when my mouth opens and close when it closes. I already fairly certain that dry-ice is entirely out of the equation as breathing in the vapors produced can be harmful.

Trying to make flute

I'm Trying to make aluminum pipe flute with calculator.  http://11wall-west.com/~ph_kosel/flutomat.html http://www.whistlemaker.com/pages/flutewhistle-calculator.php Both giving me NaN. Thisis great http://www.ehow.com/how_7325964_hole-placements-flutes.html I think this method is only for major scale. Mouth hole placement gives key of flute. I think I can make same measuring from other mouth hole placements. I don't know how to measure mouth hole placement for desired keys. I'm not sure how important is pipe length. I know that longer pipe length makes flute sound lower.

Noise or Music?

The "Bose" sound system is based on chamber resonance like that of musical instruments. This is the difference between a whistle and a flute. The mouth piece of a trumpet is raw without its additional plumbing. The noise of a piezo-electric sounder is raw, but chambered to resonate...better. A trumpet is basically an acoustical waveguide device. Consider this and lets see if you can "WOW!" the crowds with your sounds. The trumpet mellows the sound of the mouth piece by reflecting the sound repetitively off the inside walls of the horn. The angle is low so the acoustic wave reflects many times along the length. What works for you?

Try flicking your cheek while making an "oi" motion with you mouth. If you hit your cheek at just the right time you get a cool raindrop sound. Try aming for a tiny bit away from the corner of your lip for the best sound.

Muppets Animal Costume?

Hi Guys Everyone on this site is so fantastic at making stuff I wondered if one of you might be able to help me to make a Muppets Animal Costume for my friend. I'm thinking of glueing 2 pieces of foam together (will sort of look like Stewie family guys head) as the base then cutting a hole out for the mouth. Ping pong balls for the eyes and some fake fur. I'm going to use a black mesh/netting for the inside of the mouth so you can't see my friend inside the costume/ What do you think? Anyone got any ideas that would work better? If anyone could do an instrucauble for this I will be your bestest friend. Thanks everyone PS: The party is at the end of November, so I guess I should be making it already!

Is Alumisol Soft Plastic food safe?

I'm looking to cast a fake monster tongue out of Alumisol Soft Plastic (Plastisol) for a costume. Obviously it will end up going in my mouth. I can't find any information anywhere about the food-safety of the solid compound. What I gather from the msds sheet is that it's non-toxic, but it's a little ambiguous. The retailer I asked couldn't find any information either. From what I can tell it's usually used to create soft rubber fishing lures, so I'd assume it's environmentally friendly with respect to not releasing toxins into the water, and its listed uses include special effects as well as medical reproductions (Of tissue). Has anyone used this type of plastisol in contact with food or the surface of your mouth before? All help is appreciated.

Pain is a learning curve

Ok, I just made some hot chocolate, the usual 90 seconds in a microwave, narrow mug, powder and soy milk with a sprinkle of nutmeg..... drank it felt no different......but it appears that apparently it was too hot without me even realising it, and I should know because I drink hot chocolate with a spoon. My lips, roof of my mouth, gums and tounge are swelling sore and blistering. Great! Do you know what the best cure is? Whiskey, I'm sat in the living room drinking whiskey to cool the burns in my mouth, it doesnt hurt so much now but my god my lips are swelling like a mongoose fish. Who needs botocs? I have alot of food allergies too which doesn't help. Do any of you guys have food allergies and how do you cope with them, tips appreciated :)

If you're into fishing you might find this report of a new world record breaking large mouth bass from Japan weighing 22 Lbs 5oz. This would beat the long standing, and controversial record of George Perry which has stood for 77 years by one ounce. But the record keepers require that the record be broken by 2 ounces. So Close.

Vacuum pump voltage?

Today I was dumpster diving and i found an old vacuum so i decided to take the pump out but i made the mistake of not checking what voltage the vacuum runs on, because it also had a spinning component at the mouth of the vacuum. I think the pump works fine because i noticed that tube connecting the mouth of the vacuum and the pump was broke. Is there anyway to find out what voltage it runs on? would standard 120 be ok?The markings on it say 81 b-9 ECP 6500-240 HPU+ 60hz HD10 120 vac 07:07 does that mean it will work off a standard 120 outlet?update: What I am going to do with this motor has been decided. I will be attaching it to the back wheel of my bike with a car battery, i will install some type of switch on the handlebar or add something like a dimmer switch, this would allow me to have the motor on if i want, and i can adjust the speed. Please help fine tune this idea.

Hopefully it'll get a little fine-tuned for the big event.
