Hi everyone! I just got news that we are moving from Arizona to Minnesota! I will not be able to post Asteroid Belt for around a month, but don't worry, I won't take it apart. I will still have my computer and everything. Happy knexing, and I am posting a christmas present in 2 days! (the day I move)

Moving to the US? Answered

Hey there.  After I have *hopefully* gone to uni and came out the other side with a degree I am considering moving out to the USA, probably to or at least to somewhere near San Diego. Nothing is set in stone for now so any suggestions on other places would also be helpful. But my main problem is that I have started to grow some plants back in Britain and don't particularly like the thought of just leaving them, so what are the laws on bringing plants with me? I know they are just plants but it's all the time I've put into them and to be honest, they're the first few plants I haven't killed. Any tips or stories of emigrating to the US would be great. As I said, this is just a thought, but I need to know more about how to go about moving there and what happens before I can truly decide. Thanks for your help :) Tom

Show moves

Hi everyone, i was wondering if in parkour and freerunning "shows"(ie. Showing off to a small crowd) if you have any trademark tricks? Just name/describe/post a video of you doing your trick, and maybe suggest improvements as well. My showmove is a front-somersault with a 180 twist, then going backwards in a handstand for 5 seconds. It's less impressive than it sounds, but it gets a good roar from the crowd ;)

We've Moved!

Instructables has taken another step forward by moving from the naval base in Alameda to San Francisco! While we loved the views and the shop at the tower the space was getting a little too cozy and, along with Potenco, we moved on across the bay into a new spot in the South of Market neighborhood. The new space means that we're easier to visit and we're much closer to the many cool folks of the DIY community in San Francisco. We have some big plans for the new space, but for now we're focusing more on unpacking boxes and making lots of runs to pick up free items we find on Craigslist. Oh, and finding all the cool new places to eat nearby. We're loving our new food options. We'll have more pics of the new space soon. Right now the place is pretty sparse, but it'll be cool. Very cool.Have a good caption for the second picture below? Enter it into our caption competition!

Moving to the US? Answered

Hey everyone. I'm rather young, but I'm trying to plan myself a future. I've though about being a programmer(I'm VERY good with both software and hardware, better than anyone else I know at my age) but I've decided wasting my entire life sitting in front of a monitor isn't for me. I want something more active, something that won't get be bored. I'm into parkour recently, and I've always loved martial arts and knives. I thought if it's possible for me to develop a military career. I live in Israel but I really hate this place(the law is very tight and sensitive about whatever can cause harm. Knives are illegal to carry, even tear gas and pepper spray draw police attention) so I want to move to the US. My English is very good, but I heard it's hard to get there. Other than that I though about developing a military career at the US army. I might change my mind, but I just wanna know how much of my plan is possible for now. Once I turn 18 I have to serve at the military for 3 years, then once I'm 21 I wanna move to the US. Once I get there I wanna sign up to the army immediately. I'm not even sure I need a house as the army provides all I need, so I can basically live there. I would like to serve at rather high-risk force(snipers, green berets, etc) for as long as I can and then still work for the army at a more passive job, such as engineering, or research and development. I know it might sound weird and stuff, but I really wanna be a soldier. Please tell me if my plan is possible, comment or correct it. Thanks, Mike.

Moving Ears

Hello,I was just wondering if anyone could help. I have an idea for something I want to build, however I just need a push in the right direction.I’m working on a costume with antenna ears. I could just make them static however I want to add a bit of movement. Basicially I want them to, when I tilt my head down, the ears flatten (think a cats ears when angry) and when I lean my head back, they point up. The rest of the time they stay in the middle.I want them to be automatic. I really hate triggers or controls, as soon as someone notices how you are operating it, the illusion is ruined. I also don’t want to use electronics (the sound of a motor).I am absolutely sure I can oull this off, however I’m not sure the best way of doing it. I was thinking fluid filled tubes, as the water exits one it enters the other. Or the mechanism in dolls so they sleep while lying down.Does anyone have other ideas or pointers?

Moving orange bar

When viewing pages in "How to make Instructables," the lower orange bar will intermittantly move to cover the "previous to next" area of the page when changing to another page. You must then refresh the page to move it and be able to select another page of instructables. Very annoying. Also the preview bar wouldn't work the first time I tried it.

Does anyone know how to move a dove cote without distressing the birds too much?

We have a small wooden dove cote which houses 8 white doves and we want to move it about 10 meters from its current position. We had some dramas when we moved their feeding platform with it taking the birds a couple of days to find the new one. I don't want the birds to get so distressed with moving home that they leave. Any suggestions?

How to Apartment

I just moved from Yakima to Spokane, WA:  a drive that should have taken four hours, but took seven and a half.  I am currently tired. Anywho, because I am fairly new to apartment life (this upcoming apartment will be my second), I have a few questions: 1.  Although I thoroughly cleaned my previous apartment, I am unsure if I will receive my deposit back.  Even though I am in another city, are there any ways to ensure my deposit is returned besides sending a pipe bomb? 2.  My new apartment complex is about five times larger than my last.  Should I be a hermit, or should I introduce myself to my neighbors?  Any other tips on apartment living are greatly appreciated!

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Oh boy, Instructables.... It's happened again. My Mom asked me if I want to change schools next year. I have no idea on this one. Usually one school sticks out above the rest, but this is tough. At the school I'm going to right now, I'm all settled in, it's a decent school, and I've got friends here. My only complaint is that there's no band. The school my mom wants me to go to is the 60th best school in the US, plus it's a public school, so that saves us a bunch of money by not having to pay tuition. If I go to this school, Mom said we'd have enough to get me a new computer and a decent car, both of which I could really use. Also, there's a band, and let's face it, school just sucks more without band. This potential school sounds like a dream school to me, band, great academics, small class sizes, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to leave a place where I've got friends. I mean, it's not like I've never done this before (5 schools since middle school, FTW), but that doesn't make it suck any less. So, thoughts? Anyone else been in a fix like this before? Help me out, here, guys ;-)

Comment boxes keep moving

Hi!  I recently posted an instructable on rappelling.  Some of the comment boxes on the pictures keep moving, and every time I move them back, they don't stay.  I've heard that it is not unusual for that to happen in preview mode, but since this is a dangerous sport, I would like to make sure that the comment boxes are in the right spot.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Advice on riveting moving joints

Hi guys. I've been prototyping some very basic steampunk mechanisms that I'm preparing an Instructable for, and I'm looking for a bit of advice on how to make the moving joints. The mechanisms are simple, with parts I'm cutting from brass sheet myself. They'll be using joints that I'd like to make reasonably permanent and low profile, yet able to move (elbow joints, for want of a better description). I've not tested it yet, but I've read that putting a piece of paper between the two arms before riveting them (blind/pop rivets) will allow the joint to move once it's fastened together. I was also considering whether it might be advantageous to put a nylon of teflon washer between them before riveting, instead. Any advice on whether this type of moving joint would be any good, if it would last with moderate use, whether it would work at all, and what some possible alternatives might be would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Comment boxes keep moving? Answered

Hi!  I'm currently writing my first instructable, and I am trying to comment on some of the pictures, however, on some of the pictures the comment boxes keep moving to a different spot and resizing whenever I am in full preview mode.  It isn't on all of them, but it is pretty important to have these comments in the right spot as my instructable is on rappelling, and the slightest error can be very dangerous.  Has anyone else ever run into this before, and if so, how did you fix it? I've already tried moving them in edit mode, as well as the comment edit mode provided in full preview. Thanks in advance!

Why does light move? Answered

From the theory of relativity, we learn that time is relative to the observer. And that time starts going slower and slower as the observer (reference point) moves faster and faster. And if the reference point reaches the speed of light (c), time stops, and if it theoretically surpasses it, time would go backwards. Now, light travels at the speed of light, so if we consider a photon as the reference point, isn't time still for it? And if time is stopped, how does the photon ever get anywhere?

Feaure Request - moving images

When dealing with images, I cannot do the "drag to reorder" stuff on a touch-sensitive device, such as my phone or tablet*. Since the vast majority of my time online is via one of these two devices, not being able to click & drag images around is a major PITA, having to start up the desk top computer just to move a thumbnail a few pixels... Bearing in mind that most UK internet browsing is done via touch-sensitive devices, and the UK is this site's second-biggest user-base, it would seem sensible to address this issue. *both running Android

Moving Back In With Your Parents?!

Is this a good idea? Who ever thinks moving back in with your parents is a GOOD thing? Perhaps when it comes with free room and board and helping you pay back your college loans. Here's the deal:I move States and help work at my brothers' store in exchange for not having to stress about rent, paying back college loans - basically about life. But is it truly stress free? What about the stress attained after reverting back to your childlike role? Granted, I'll have more time to plan on grad school and writing on the side...I can't stand my Dad. He's going senile and has a short temper after he gets into your business and doesn't understand - and I lack the patience. He'll start yelling and reverting back to his "I'm the tyrannical boss" mode one moment and forget he wasn't as gentle as he is in the next.I see my brothers - they're both in their 30s and technically, it's their house they want me to move into, but they don't date, they don't have time what with working so much. And my mom cooks all the time and I've already gained 10 pounds from the Christmas break visit.I'm just wondering if life will ever be stress-free or if it just transcends...

Moving Three Servos at Once

Hey Guys, I'm working on a project and I'm trying to figure out what power supply to use.  I have power supply rated for 5V and .7A.  I was going to test this power supply out by making all servos sweep back and forth at once, and see how it performs.  This question is main for the coders out there.  Is the following code correct?  I've had a long work day and I'm about to pass out and I was hoping if someone could critique this real quick.  Thanks in advance! /* Sweep by BARRAGAN This example code is in the public domain. modified 8 Nov 2013 by Scott Fitzgerald http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/Sweep */ #include Servo myservo01;  // create servo object  Servo myservo02: Servo myservo03: int pos = 0;    // variable to store the servo position void setup() {   myservo1.attach(9);  // attaches the servo on pin 9   myservo2.attach(8);   myservo3.attach(7); } void loop() {   for(pos = 0; pos <= 180; pos += 1)     // goes from 0 degrees to 180 degrees   {                                                                 // in steps of 1 degree     myservo01.write(pos);                      // tell servo to go to position 'pos'     delay(15);                                             // waits 15ms for the servo     myservo02.write(pos);     delay(15);     myservo03.write(pos);     delay(15);           }   for(pos = 180; pos>=0; pos-=1)     // goes from 180 degrees to 0 degrees   {                                    myservo01.write(pos);            // tell servo to go to position 'pos'     delay(15);                              // waits 15ms for the servo     myservo02.write(pos);                  delay(15);     myservo03.write(pos);                   delay(15);   } }

K'Nex Guns Need To Move On!

Alright, someone needs to say this so i will. Knex guns are stuck in this sort of, generic handguns, average assault rifles, shotguns with nothing new. We all need to rack our brains and come up with some concepts, then post them. So we can all have a crack at a what would be considered "HARD" concept. We need to be trying new ideas. We're stuck in a dark age of nothing new (only rarely something good might come out) we need to step forward . Basically, I'd much rather see some pics of a failed concept and what you were trying to acheive than, "Removable Mag Handgun" or "M8AR (MegaMetal8's Assault Rifle)" which is just a generic removable mag gun. I Say one of us with quite alot of subs needs to make a ible/forum where EVERYONE has access and can post concepts. Its just getting boring with all this, so for more fun and ideas. Together, LETS DO THIS! Thankyou for reading and together we can make this happen. -MM8

How to make an underwater/rippling light effect?

I need some help! I am trying to make a light that appears to be shining through moving water. If you google "Chauvet Abyss lighting" that is the sort of effect I want, but it will be in a bathroom so on a much smaller scale.  I can't figure out how to do this. I tried shining light of an aluminum pan of water to get a reflection but it was too dim and I couldn't keep the water moving unless I stood there moving it. Some of the problems with this are it needs to be fairly bright, needs to be preferably something that doesn't need to be plugged in, and can't be expensive. I thought of shining a light through an aquarium but I am not sure how to keep the water moving in a way that it would give the right appearance. I also thought of having the light moving instead and either still water or have the light shine through some type of translucent surface that is made to look like water. However I am not sure how to make a light that moves (slowly) or how to make a surface for it to shine through.
