Multi-function, multi-materials workshops?

I'm on a small rural acreage. My shop situation is that I’ve got two separate, fairly compact spaces for working with wood (or general “handyman” repairs for the home) and for working with metal (cutting, welding, grinding, etc). My metal area is where I also often work with small-engine equipment. These spaces are located inconveniently, separated by nearly 100 feet! I think about how I might like to combine functions under one roof. So I’m posting to try to coax some of you people to show me how you may have done this. Or examples you've found on the internet (give URLs). Obviously, no one wants to get sawdust into an area where torch flames or electric-welding sparks could cause a hazard. And you wouldn’t want to get engine lubricants or solvents mixed up with wood projects. Discussion and description are fine, but I’d really like to see pictures or floor-plan diagrams if possible.  I need examples that represent modest investment, as I could probably only afford to build an enclosure of about 16x24 ft, with a bay door. ( Yes - could probably learn something from shops that are somewhat bigger than this.) In grandfather's day, farm shops were usually multi-purpose. You know, for "bench carpentry", and maintaining or servicing the truck or tractor, welding bailer components back together, etc. Often had a tablesaw, maybe a bandsaw - besides the hoist, welders, socket wrenches. I suppose sometimes a fire did occur in one shop or another, but probably not often.  I'd like to see some more modern versions, rather than just the "version" I have in terms of vague memories. Thanks.

Multi circuit switch

I'm sure everyone on here has seen a million post on switches but this is a bit different... maybe. I need a switch that has 3 positions on-off-on. I have seen these. The only thing is I need it with multiple circuits. I don't know how to explain it, but I think I need something different. More like 4 pins instead of 3. Im very new to the DIY scene so if this is a absolutely stupid question let me know. I'm sure I'll have more to come! lol

Multi-Source power?

Hello all, i'm thinking on a very easy way to support more than 1 power source for my electronic circuits.Below you can see the schematic. It's very basic. Each source have a rectifier diode to disallow inverse currents for each one. When both sources have the same output, both diodes will work and the output is Vin - 0.7When one of them is bigger than the other (the case on the schematic), diode on smaller source will open circuit, and the bigger is the one to be used. The output will be 7-0.7 = 6.3V.The problem i found is when there is little difference, this is less than 0.7V.This way both diodes will work but there is a difference on voltage between the two sources.Do you think that having a small resistance like 10Ohm and high dissipation in one line will solve this?Do you think this design is valid?thanks for the help in advance.

Multi Part Instructable?

I am making an instructable for building a gas powered bicycle from scratch, but in it's current form, it is shaping up to have literally hundreds of steps. Is there a way to break it down into smaller sections in such a way that I could still enter it in a contest as one instructable? I was thinking perhaps I make an instructable that consists of only the introduction, followed by quick overviews of each part, with accompanying links to other instructables which are dedicated to each part. The way I am planning to do it, I would have one instructable for how to modify the engine, another one for choosing a good bicycle to motorize, another for mounting the engine to the bike frame, another for calculating gear ratios and setting up gear reduction, another for rebuilding the rear wheel, another for throttle linkage, another for exhaust systems, gas tanks, and air filters, another for all the other misc stuff you have to do, and finally one more for how to ride safely. So that would be 9 parts to the instructable, each their own instructable, which even split into 8 would make quite large instructables. Then the "parent" instructable, which would be the one I enter in contests, or which would be featured if it's worthy, would look like this: How to build a 4hp motorized bicycle from scratch! Blah blah blah introduction, nice pictures of finished bicycles, etc. Step 1 short overview of specific part, ex modifying the engine, then link to another instructable providing detailed instructions on exactly how to modify the engine Step 2 same format as step 1 and so on until all the parts are covered. This would also be helpful to me because I could better organize the hundreds of images I have for this instructable, right now it is a huge pain in the butt to find any specific image, so much so that it's easier to upload them one by one as I need them just so I can keep track. So, would this format be ok?

A Good Multi-Tool

Pliers Wire Cutter Saw File 3" Knife (non-serrated) Scissors Can Opener Bottle Opener 2-3 Flat Screwdrivers (Large, Medium, Small) Phillips Screwdriver I like the look of the SOG PowerLock S60 ($50) with a replaced blade ($8) (1/2 serrated to straight) because of the geared pliers, the replaceable/interchangeable parts, the 1/4" drive and all the tools I want. Can anyone recommend tools that would fit for me?

Multi language instructables

Hello, As a french user, there is a feature that I feel is lacking on the website: the possibility to translate an instructable to make it available for people who do not speak english. There have been a few times here where an Instructable was the perfect how-to to share with people in my local maker community, but most french people are not fluent in english. So I had to translate it for them. Furthermore, I would be happy to translate some useful instructables here and there when needed around me. But this work is not shared to the community of Instructables and makers that could benefit from it, only to a few people around me. Could there be a functionality on the website so that an instructable could be translated and made available in multiple languages ? I do not mean that everything should be translated in every language and all, but if someone translates something, then it can be made available to other people speaking that language. Well, I hope you consider it, My 2 cents, pol / littlevache

Identifiying and sources of connectors

I started investigating the insides of a cheap forward facing camera thinking it might be possible to mount the camera module on some old glasses frames and connect it back to the recorder / playback unit with a cable. I was happy to discover the camera module was concted to the main board by a multi pin socket and a couple of dabs of glue. Unfortunatley I have no idea of how to identify and find a matching plug and socket to make a cable. the main body of the plug is 13mm long 3mm wide and about 3mm deep and has 15 pins on each side these pins are a little under 1mm appart. I hope someone is able to offer some help with how to identify and find another.

I want ot set up a system to play games on my 360 with my friends that will allow us to use 1 xbox360 to display on 2 or more tvs. Or can a console display be run through a computer? I know that it can be done with computers and i have seen "walls" of tvs in clubs that all have a combined picture, but i am trying to do this relatively cheap.  the "cardboard on part of the screen" idea has come to mind but i was hoping for something a little higher tech.   My team has split the gaming market, one of us has a ps3, myself an x360 and one a wii.  Thank you for your input and any help that you might be able to give me.  Happy Holidays.

Wiring amplifiers to split channels, I'm sure I can make a bang, can anyone help?

I currently run a 25watt RMS T-class amp of 4 ohms into four 100watt 8 ohms speakers wired in pairs- so each pair is 4 ohms. I have just acquired a second identical amp. Obviously, there is much capacity in the speakers. I was thinking to split the input and send left channel to one amp and right channel to the other and use the sum of each amp to power each pair of speakers to maintain ohmage but increase power. Can someone comment on my intentions and make sure I wire correctly and don't cause irreparable disharmony? If my technical knowledge will cause calamity, might a suggestion of how all the kit can be utilised be offered? Advance thanks for the benefit of your wisdom, M

Where do you go to find multi-disciplinary reference material in engineering?

I read this article about the conductivity of carbon nanotubes, and I had the most awesome dream about a space elevator. In the dream it had 2 cables instead of one, and just ran the current through the cables. Anyway, I was sure someone else would have thought of that, so I checked for some reference material. There was a decent wikipedia article which brought up a question. How does current flow affect the yield strength of a material?

Multi-generational email lists

Can anyone suggest a mailing list or group hosting solution that is private, self-serve, and extremely simple? I volunteered to setup a mailing list or group for my neighborhood. I just made a Google group, and checked out the invitation and acceptance process, which requires creating a Google account. I feel that creating another account might be burdensome or too complicated for some of my neighbors -- especially the older ones who stay at home peering out of their windows all day that I specifically want included. Mailman does pretty much what I want, but I don't think it's ready for someone who already has trouble dealing with email at all. Yahoo groups seems to be a default solution, but in all honesty, it is a total mess. Am I not giving my older neighbors enough credit? How have you made mailing lists for multi-generational groups?

Multi Console Av Cables

SOOOOO i've got way to many gaming consoles.. i collect them  i love them all DEARLY but i hate the fact i've got 20million sets of AV cables for each one. SO i went to gamestop and bought a multi console av cable.. covers my xbox (original), xbox 360, playstation 2, and gamecube/nintendo. so i plugged all my consoles in and fired on up.. and to my surprise i had no audio.. so i checked the av's on the tv side and moved htem and after much arguing with it all unplugged all but my xbox.. magically SOUND. so while the xbox was playing a movie i plugged in another console and bam sound was gone.. so my THEORY is this 1) Single Console it Works fine but i still have to switch the cables around every time i want to use another console 2) more than one console plugged in the audio from L & R is being diverted from the tv to the new console plugged in. but i am unsure how to test this.. and even more unsure if my theory is correct how to fix it. i bought the cable for next to nothing and am not above hacking it apart to get the results i want.

The making of a multi-staged coilgun

I want to make a coilgun with 2 or 4 stages; however, I don't have much experience with capacitors, magnetic fields, etc.. I am not really making it now, but its more of preparing the steps so when I do start, I will be able to complete it and be aware of problems that may occur. 1) when the coil is fed with electricity, what is stopping it from shooting right back at you? 2) how much voltage should the coils be using (aka what type of capacitor should I use) 3) I have heard that capacitors will sometimes have left over charge in them, how would I "dump" the excess. 4) Using multiple stages, should all the coils be turned on at once or in succession 5) should the wire coiling the tube be uninsulated? Here is a diagram of my current understanding of a coilgun. Let me know if it is not correct. Power Supply (battery) --> switch --> capacitor -->wire that wraps around the pipe, creating a magnetic field --> magnetic field pulls projectile into the tube and launches it.

1 Arduino + 3 or 4 LM35s?

I am a total beginner, having logged about one hour here (the last hour). Does this sound OK for a first Arduino project? I want to sample and log the temperature outside at the surface and at depth for a total of 4 readings to a depth of around 50cm (20"). The reason is to consider if I should provide my daughter's pet rabbits with an underground burrow as relief against the next heat wave. It seems a nicer option than running a swamp cooler all day. Though I suppose I could use an Arduino + LM35 to turn on and off the swamp cooler :) It looks like I can do it with 4 x LM35s, an Arduino One, some sort of data storage, a 9v battery and a bread board. Any recommendations for if I should use WiFi or an SD card for storage? My guess is the SD card is simpler to programme and maybe less of a battery drain. It seems I just need to hook up the data out of the LM35s to the analogue ports, then loop over the inputs and write the outputs to a file somewhere. And calibration too. Any pointers on how to turn the LM35s into probes that can be buried in the ground? I was thinking I could bind all the probes onto a dowel, dig a hole and bury it. How to extend the LM35 pin outs? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Multi Touch Pad. Would this design work?

Found this video on how to make a multi-touch table for your PC.;=fvwBut that model have 2 big problems. It's ugly and it's too high. But I really want to build one. 'Cause that is what I've always done, built my own small electronical stuff. Anyway. I've been thinking and I've designed my own model based on a webcam with a microphone. The picture says it all acctually. Do you guys think it would work, or is the cameras angle of view to small to have the height I want? Does my Size and shape seems resonable or do I need to rethink. And about the LED's. It would be cool with red light coming up from inside it. And it would match quite good with the oak frame (have lots of Oak-pieces I can't use for something so I will make a nice frame out of it), and in the dark it would be very cool with light coming up from inside it, but that would disturb the camera by removing the dark spots created by your fingers, or am I wrong? Maybe I could put them discretely in the four corners above the table itself. AnywayWhat do you think. Possible or not?It works with a little height, but I will strip down the camera so that I can put the lens really low and not put in the whole camera. To read the text on the picture you have to view them in full size.

What Multi-tool should I choose?

I was wounder is anyone could help me pick a multi-tool ether from Leatherman or Gerber, I really don't like swiss army. If it could be around $30 have the some of the following: Knife, pliers or scissors, assorted screwdrivers, file, lanyard, bottle opener, awl and tweezers. It doesn't need to have all thoughts things but some. I am currently thinking about a leatherman Squirt P4 or S4. I have had the Gerber clutch but the pliers broke off and it was really worn out so I thought to get something new. Right now I have the Swiss+tech utili-key on my key chain right now and its basically a knife/saw, bottle opener with a tiny screwdriver on it. I know your going to say to win one but it would be easier just to buy one. Any opinions and review about what you have would be great. Also it needs to fit comfortably in my pocket, it will be going everywhere with me including school so the blade has to be less then 2.5 inches and can not lock.

What we have is a 12 volt dc transformer for 2 led drivers and a 6 volt ac transformer for a turning table. We want it all to work off one plug-in style transformer. How can we do this and conceal the components in the base. Please help us. Thanks for any help.
