Big Band Music Stands

I am the leader of a 17 Piece Big Band. Just like Glenn Miller or Harry James, I need to find a way to make some inexpensive but deco looking music stands. In the old days, they used to make them in all types, sizes and styles. Today, they have one kind. I would like to find a way to make some myself that can fold up and be transported fairly easily. If you have an idea of how to do this, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to email me if you have questions. The stand should be in two parts, the base and the shelf. The shelf should sit on the base. The shelf should also have a lip for the music to sit on without sliding off. The total height of the back of the stand should be 36". The height of the front of the stand, where the music sits, should be approx 29". The width of the top portion, the part that holds the music, should be 22". The lip should be 3 to 31/2 inches. The base will vary depending on style and shape. I look forward to anyone who thinks they have a way to make these. They need to be strong enough not to blow away in wind, yet easy to fold and carry. After all, I will be moving 17 of them each time I perform. As far as the style, well, the more art deco looking the better. If I could have anything I wanted without the worry of cost, I would choose stands that looked like the front of a car from the 1930's and 40's. It would look as though it had a grill in front along with the large round lights, perhaps a cap on the radiator, large wide fenders and whitewall looking tires on the side. Now, that is just my if I could have anything idea. reality says a simple square or perhaps v shaped stand. Solid colored, perhaps made from corrugated plastic. Thanks for looking and giving this some thought. Blessings! Ashley ideas@mrlivemusic.com

Digital Music stand with timed page turning.

I really need to make a digital music stand.  Setting up multiple paper pages on a stand is extremely inconvenient.  It takes longer to set up the music than to play the song!  Plus, even with the arms extended on my music stand, it can only hold 4 pages max.  Some songs can be 10 pages or more. So here's what I'm thinking: A raspberry pi running a program to view .PDFs and a flat screen TV or monitor mounted to a music stand. W. Wayt Gibbs, here --> (http://spectrum.ieee.org/geek-life/hands-on/diy-handsfree-sheet-music) has already built the exact thing that I'm thinking of.  However, I'll be using this for drum music so my feet will be busy enough without having to use a foot pedal to turn the page (Maybe I'm not that coordinated. Definitely won't be chewing gum while playing!) So I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas about automatic page turning. My idea would be a .PDF viewer that can display 3 pages (so that the page turning doesn't have to be exact) and can be set to automatically turn the pages at a timed interval after i click start.  The problem with this is that each song will have a different timing.  Does anybody know of a program that can turn pages via a timer AND remember different timings for each file? I suppose I could just write the timing setting on the top of each .pdf and set it to that every time I open a file. Also, I'm not a computer programmer.  I have built a home theater pc which gave me a little knowledge.  But, when it comes to raspberry pi's I've never used one.  Is it powerful enough for what I'm proposing? Is that the route you would take? I'm also not sure what to use as an input device.  Maybe I'll just mount a percussion table to the drum rack somewhere and use a mouse on it. I'm open to any and all suggestions about every aspect of this idea. Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Clever way to extend a Manhasset music stand?

I'd like to be able to extend my 20" stand to 36", so it'll hold three sheets of music instead of two. The solution should be easy to remove or fold up when not needed. I know that professionally-made stand extenders are available (e.g. "Stand-Outs"), but I thought I'd give you guys a crack at it first.  ;?)

Music Stand Incorporates a PA Monitor Speaker Cabnet Project

I hope this is useful, I'm the bassist & singer in a country duo (with a guitarist) and I wanted to incorporate a PA vocal monitor & drum machine into my music stand (I run the PA too) to keep everything handy.   https://www.instructables.com/id/Muisc-Stand-PA-Monitor-Speaker-Shelf/

Looking to build a remote controlled mic stand

Want to build a remote controlled mic stand. Needs to have ability to hold 2 lbs and somewhat accurately make movements in increments of 1/8" at a time. I have no skills in building such a device. Looking to pay someone to build one for me immediately. I am very serious about this. I have seen others who have built such a device, but none worthy for sale as of yet. I wouldn't be past investing in marketing of such a device if something working comes of this. Jimmy

How can I make a balencer / stablizer to hold steady steady a small reading / music stand?

How to put LED lights into a drum kit and on cymbal stands.

My boyfriend is wanting to put blue LEDS into his drums and under his cymbals. For right now I think he just wants them on steady. But eventually I'm thinking he'll want the ones inside his drums to come on when he hits the drum, so a way to trigger those to do that would also be good. Right now I was looking at the single light LEDs that they actually have to put on your car, these of course run off your car battery, so would also need a way to convert them to run on regular AC from house outlet. Any advice on this would be great. Any ideas and tips would be welcome. I'm a power novice so any detailed information ie(brands, stores, etc) would be welcome also. I'm so glad I found this forum. If anyone is interested you can find my guys band on MySpace, their name is Desidero. Thanks for any help in advance.

Do you have any ideas for the use of LEDs for a performing band?

I play in a Metal band and we are often on a dark stage so I figured LEDs would make a great addition to the stage array. I am thinking along the lines of mic stands and possibly some good ideas for speaker cabinets and so on. Please let me know every single idea that you can possibly imagine. If you need to see some photos of what our gear looks like on stage send me a message here and I will send you a link for photos. Thanks so much!

iPod Touch Rail Mount

Hey!I got a Roland V-Drum kit last year and there's an aux input for mp3 players. I use it with my iPod touch to play along with songs. My problem is, I rest my iPod on the control module and not only does this then block half the controls, but it sometimes falls off with furious drumming. So I though to myself, I wonder if I can buy a rail mount so I can have a cradel attatched to the stand. I knew you could buy motorbike iPod cradels, but all of these weren't wide enough to accomidate the 35-40mm diameter of the stand. So I thought about making one.But I can't come up with any ideas. The stand I have is this:http://www.woodbrass.com/images/woodbrass/BATTERIE+DRUM+ROLAND+TD+9+KX.JPG(not the drums though... I wish)The rail mounts I have been looking at are like this:http://www.mountguys.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=RAP-274-AP4&click;=21Any ideas guys?

How would i harden printer ink to stand up to lots of handling (on a plastic-type substance)?

Hello fellow instructable'r,I have been trying to make my own custom guitar picks and, so far, have been extremely surprised with my results. First, i wondered if it was possible for a guitar pick to even run through my printer (regular load in front, print to front) without jamming it. I found out that i could. Then, i tried printing a NIN (Nine Inch Nails) logo on it and it worked. My only problem is that i can't get the ink to dry and become durable enough to let me touch it and not take ink off/ make fingerprints on it. For now, i have put tape over the side i printed on, but is there any way that you know of that i can make the ink more permanent? I was thinking of maybe using clear coat spray or that clear top coat for nail polish. Just so you guys know, i used a yellow dunlop tortex .73mm pick.Thanks,-Nick

How to get In-ear headphones from slipping out.? Answered

I have a pair of Skullcandy headphones. They used to stay in my ears when pulled on, and just when wearing them. Now they always fall out. When I'm sitting or standing up, All the time. When I Absolutely needed to use them I would wear some kind of stretchy, over the ears hat. But I don't like wearing the hats all the time. Is there a way I can fix this without getting some new tips?

New Bring Me the Horizon Album

Bring Me The Horizon - Suicide Season (anyone a fan of the band here? they're grindcore) To me this album was kind of a let down after there last two albums, some of the songs sounded a little slipknotish, (sorry but I can't stand slipknot, please no arguments lol), but the breakdowns and lyrics were superb, one of the reasons I love this band so much. Overall this album is pretty dece, but not nearly as good as there older stuff. favorite song on the album is "Diamonds Arn't Forever" by far what did you guys think of it?

Making speakers louder?

I'm totally new to sound systems, and I'm using an old pair of computer speakers. These computer speakers have no volume control, they were controlled completely by the "Volume Control" icon on my taskbar. I'm currently making a stand for my iPod (I know, real original) and I want it to have speakers. Only problem is that it's not very loud. When hooked all together, I think my earbud headphones at full blast are louder than this speaker at the same distance. I'm wondering if there's a way to add power to these things to make them louder. Any ideas are appreciated.

Arduino Mega WaiveShield 48 Button sampler (Advice ?)

This will be my first project, and original reason I found Arduino in the first place! I was searching for an affordable portable music machine. What has developed in my mind has become progressively bigger, but  I digress. I currently have 2 Mega 2560's, Wave Shield, and an assortment of switches, pots, and buttons robbed from "trash ?". In the mail as I type is a Beat707, QuadRam, R.C. MIDI Shield, Mux 2 Shield, 3x 555 Timers, and a  PT2399 delay. My plan of action was to beef up one mega with the quadram, waive shield, MIDI shield, and Mux 2. If this is possible, it would make a 48 Button sampler with SD card slot, MIDI in and out, and just maby 8-10 bit recording capabilities? Mean wile take the timers and delay and create a funky sounding distortion box that can be positioned anywhere in the circuit. The second Mega is dedicated to the Beat707. Question being, what do you think? I have tons of hardware experience, and soldering hours under my belt, but programming is a new one for me. Im not sure how to judge if the Mega will stand up to the challenge of the first combination, but my biggest requirement going into this, was I wanted something portable, that ran off batteries, but was not just a toy. I started calling it the pocket studio, although I doubt it will fit in a normal pocket.

Album Review: Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson (1971) ****

Harry Nilsson - Nilsson SchmilssonRelease Date: 1971Nacho's Rating: 4 (out of 5)Tracks:01 - Gotta Get Up YouTube02 - Driving Along YouTube03 - Early In The Morning YouTube04 - The Moonbeam Song05 - Down06 - Without You YouTube (hit single in 1972)07 - Coconut YouTube08 - Let The Good Times Roll09 - Jump Into the Fire YouTube10 - I'll Never Leave YouThe 2002 remastered version also has demo versions of all but "Early In The Morning". This is the album that first turned me on to music. I had been interested in music before I heard this, but Nilsson's wide range of styles and his goosebump-inducing vocals showed me that there was more to music than Top40 hits and screaming guitars.. For me, the album as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Some of the songs don't stand alone very well, but sound pretty good when played together. I could do without "The Moonbeam Song" and "I'll Never Leave You" (having to follow "Jump Into The Fire" is a big disadvantage) but even they sound OK in context.. The album leads off with the rather goofy "Gotta Get Up" and follows with "Driving Along" - neither a great song, but definitely fun to listen to.. "Early In The Morning" gives a peek at what he can do with his voice and it's a good song, too.. "The Moonbeam Song" shifts into slow ballad mode. Nothing special, but Nilsson does a pretty good job.. "Down" is a nice bluesy song that starts to really show off his voice.. "Without You" is one of my all-time favorite songs. Nilsson takes a rather smarmy song and infuses if with FEELING. I still get goose-bumps when I hear the refrain.. "Coconut" is about as silly as a song can get, but Nilsson somehow makes it work. Another favorite for me. Wooo-oo-oo.. "Let The Good Times Roll" is another bluesy song with great vocals. Fits well between Coconut and JITF.. "Jump Into The Fire" is another favorite of mine. Not many singers can scream and make it sound good. And it has a bass line and a drum solo that will put a grin on Punkguyta's face as he blows out his speakers/amp.. "I'll Never Leave You" is a slow plaintive wail that is a bit of a let down after JITF. Great vocals, but I've never liked the song.. Not an album for every one. Check out the YouTube clips and see what you think.Links:Harry Nilsson at Wikipedia

What tech I need to make a tactile/haptic musical instrument...i.e. a sample that responds to touch and vibration...?

I'm looking to make an instrument that responds to touch or vibration, I have seen similar things elsewhere but have no links. The basic idea is that there would operate as a stand alone object that when touched, stroked tapped etc. it generates a sound and the volume, timbre or whatever is relative to the force applied. So using vibration to trigger a sample and quality of vibration to determine the quality of sound. Any ideas about how this could be achieved? Could an arduino provide the answer or is it purely sensor based? I would really love all your instructable knowledge on this one. Ta

How can i modify my older ihome to charge my new itouch and still use the alarm function. It still plays music.

Although my ihome will play music from my itouch 3G, it will not charge it and i can no longer use it as an alarm clock if the itouch is docked.  I was hoping for a simple adapter that will help the old ihome recognize the new itouch's handshake.  My daughter is not likely to accept a solution with wires hanging out (as she is a little shy and anything that makes her stand out "oddly" is unacceptable).  Any suggestions?

Connecting soft circuit sensors to a sound system?

I want to make a sensor that will cause a sound system to emit music. There are some 'ibles for making soft-circuit sensors, but I want to make it so that a speaker produces sounds when an object triggers a sensor. When somebody stands on this sensor, sound will come from a speaker. I don't have any experience with electronics but I can learn. Sorry if my explanation is repetitive.

Hooking up ipod to a TV Answered

I have a device that you can stick your ipod in and play music on your TV.  It is like those chargers at hotels that the ipod stands up on, only much smaller.  It is hooked up into the TV.  I have been told that you can have your games that you play on your ipod on the big screen as well.  It doesn't work, though.  Is this true?  And if so, how do you do it?

Top iPhone Instructables

Apple has released the new iPhone--and there are Instructables to make it better. Check out these iPhone-related Instructables, some of our favorites, that can make your iPhone better prepared for everyday use. Retractable Headphones Headphones are always getting tangled up in knots, but these recoiling headphones will keep the wires conveniently curled up and ready to use.   Business Card Stand Using just a business card, you can make this simple stand on which you can watch movies or just let your iPhone rest. Handgun Handset By talking into the grip, listening through the barrel, and starting and finishing your calls with a pull of the trigger of this modified airsoft gun, your iPhone calls will never be the same again. If you get trigger-happy, though, you might end up with a bunch of dropped calls. Book Safe As long as you don't choose a piece of classic literature, you can safely conceal your iPhone inside of a book with this design. Car Stand You don't want to be talking on your phone while you're driving, but this car stand will keep the iPhone in a convenient position for music and other purposes during car trips. One-Hand Use A simple loop attached to the back of the iPhone can make one-handed iPhone-ing simple and secure. And these are just a few--there are plenty more great iPhone Instructables to use!

Electric Gramophone?

I've just had an idea for making an mp3 player disguised as an old gramophone, to be used as a set piece/source of music for busking. Problem is, I can't figure out how to pull off some of the details of making it... Heres the idea as it stands: Have an old gramophone that appears to be playing music from a record, but is actually playing music from an Mp3 player. I figure you could interrupt the signal from the needle to the amplifier without to much trouble, as you'd still need the needle there to make it move along the record as it 'plays'. It also shouldn't be too hard to hide a speaker in the trumpet or even embed it into the side of the gramophone. In an ideal world, it would also be great to have some general controls on the back, to select play lists and the like, and that's probably achievable my attaching it to a standard mp3 player. The tricky bit is that I want to get it to play when the needle is placed on the record, and stop when the record finishes, ultimately with a digital replica of the scratch sound that you get at the end of an old record. Does anyone have any ideas on how to go about this part? because I'm absolutely stumped... is it possible that the answer lies somewhere in using the movement of the needle-arm to complete a circuit while in certain positions? Any thoughts, help, ideas or suggestions would be appreciated :) .

I want to get more out of my sound

I've been getting kinda bored with how my music sounds, and I have LOTS of it on my computer. Some is really pushing the line as far as the quality (128kbps bleh), but most of my music is fairly good quality, some of it flac rips of my cds. I can listen to a good cd on a good cd player on my stereo and it has clean basslines and no distortion in the treble, and no crackle unless it was recorded right into the track. But on my mac, mostly only the high bit rate stuff sounds okay on my stereo. Stuff at 192kb/s or vbr sounds crackely and I can't stand it. I often found a lot of the times it was the EQ in iTunes, if I turned it off, sometimes the crackle would go away, has anyone found this with their mac? I have the volume down 4 notches from full, so I know it's not clipping or it would show on my stereo. I've tried surfing the inter webs for DSP software or something of that sort for my mac, but apparently all there is, is like professional mixer board software and just stuff I didn't want to get into. Why can't there be a program made for even a PC that gives you any amount of access to sliders to adjust the EQ of the sound, that doesn't sound like crap? Im not talking itunes what? 10 sliders? I want to be able to adjust like 30-60 sliders per channel, does anyone make eq software like that????

DIY Drum Pad that Controls MIDI Device (Korg nanopad)

Hi all, I'm working on a project which involves a pipe like structure with something like a DIY electronic drum pad on top. (like a stand alone drum) When the pad is hit it, triggers a key on a MIDI device such as the KORG nanopad http://korg.com/Product.aspx?pd=415 under the actual drum itself. This nanopad acts as a remote control for tracks created using music software on my laptop. So when the pad is hit, it starts a track. Problem is, I have no idea how I will make the connection from the pad to the MIDI device. I was thinking about using a Peizo signal but am lost as to how to wire it up or if thats possible. If I use this instructable https://www.instructables.com/id/Electronic-Drum-Pad/ should I be able to simply solder the Peizo wires into the nano keypad relatively easily?  Long shot but if anyone has even the slightest idea what I'm getting at here, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Online Pirates Sunk - crew still paddling

The four men behind the (in)famous file-sharing website Pirate Bay have been jailed for a year, and ordered to pay $4,500,000 damages to a selection of big media publishing companies. One of the four, Peter Sunde, refused to pay what he called a "bizarre" fine; ""We can't pay and we wouldn't pay. Even if I had the money I would rather burn everything I owned, and I wouldn't even give them the ashes."Despite the ruling, The Pirate Bay website is still up and running - it seems that, whilst the activities of the website have been declared illegal, the website itself is not, presumably because none of the shared files are hosted by TPB themselves.Speaking to the BBC, the chairman of industry body the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) John Kennedy said the verdict sent out a clear message."These guys weren't making a principled stand, they were out to line their own pockets. There was nothing meritorious about their behaviour, it was reprehensible."The Pirate Bay did immense harm and the damages awarded doesn't even get close to compensation, but we never claimed it did."There has been a perception that piracy is OK and that the music industry should just have to accept it. This verdict will change that," he said.BBC StoryBBC Business analysis of TPB's operationsIFPI press releasePirate Bay's press conference

Ring a bell? (Special event for British members)

The Olympics are coming, and although I will miss most of it, it would be cool if I could take part in some way. It turns out I can, and so can every other Brit reading this, in an event called All the Bells. The short version is, on Friday 27th July, at 08:12am, UK time, as many bells as possible, from doorbells and bike bells, all the way up to full cathedral bell-towers will ring, all across the United Kingdom. Taking part is easy - just stand on your doorstep and press your doorbell - but why not go the full hog?  Are you in a cycling club?  Get them all out in the street, ringing their bike bells. Live near a church?  Even if you're not religious, get in touch and get them involved. Go to school?  Talk to the music teacher, borrow the hand bells or the tubular bells. Are you an engineer?  Hang up the biggest lump of steel on the site, and beat it with a hammer. Heck, just get all your friends to set an alarm on their phones and iPods with a bell-tone at 08:12, or turn up your PC speakers and play with sound effects. Pass the website around your friends and contacts by Facebook or Twitter, put a poster up at work, add graphics and links to your blog, and generally spread the word. [BLOGGED]

What's your favorite Valentine's Day oblation?

It's getting near the middle of February, a time when those of us who are single bemoan this fact and those of you who aren't are expected to produce an offering to remain that way. So what's your ritual sacrifice of choice? Candy? Jewelry? Flowers? Or do you rail against the commercially imposed standards of society and get your significant other something more out of the ordinary? Ladies, do you often get your gentlemen presents, or is it mostly a one-way street? Personally, I'm in favor of composing sonnets. It's inexpensive, about as old-school as you can get, and doesn't put money in the pocket of De Beers. When e'er I see you after lab is done, You make me wish that zero could divide If only so our 2 could equal 1, Such that our theories could be unified, You move like music set to calculus, A SIN-curve body makes sin seem divine, Curves like space-time but oh so sinuous, That make me wish that I were your COS, But TAN to this topic, I do feel Some measure of quantum uncertainty, What your superposition might reveal, Should I ask you, what you might say to me, So 'til I feel that I could stand the shock, I think I'll leave that cat inside the box.

Flexible PCB rewiring

Hi,     I'm working on a project where I want to strip a 'roll up piano' down and take the rubber keyboard innards which feed into the electronic sound unit and get rid of the floppy rubber roll up piano keyboard and replace it with a standard PC qwerty keyboad. I got used to using a qwerty keyboard for playing tunes already and want tomake one that is stand alone that I don't need to connect to the PC to play music with. That means I need to take all the connections that you can see in the photos I uploaded and re connected each one to a key on the keyboard.  First of all, I don't know if pressing the rubber key on the roll up keyboad 'completes a circuit' and therefore prompts the electronic unit at the end of it to play the sound or if it 'breaks the circuit'. These units have two flexible pcb sheets as you an see in the second photo so when the rubber key is pressed they touch (although they all seem to be pretty much touching anyway). In an old casio solid keyboard I have there is a hard pcb and the piano keys touch a small rubber disk (much like is what under qwerty keys) to the pcb.   would it be better for me to take a razor and painstakingly slice up the flexible plastic which the pcb is printed on then lead them to the innards of the qwerty keyboard I'm going to modify or would it be better for me to just chop the flexible pcb off and use some kind of very thin coppe wire to feed dirctly into the unit and to the underside of the qwerty keys?   Any guidence would be appreciated.

Gathering in Columbus, Ohio, Saturday Oct. 11 (punch+pie)

This Saturday, October 11th, 2008, we will be having an open-house "inauguration" at the Steampunk Laboratory's new facility at the Millworks, at 2034 Leonard Ave, Columbus, OH, 43219.The Steampunk Laboratory is the name of an educational program to teach science and engineering through art, which we have been developing over the past year or so. We are now expanding that idea into a community fabrication and education center, and we have recently (i.e. last week) "graduated" from the Milo Arts Center, where we began, and are now located in a stand-alone brick building at another artists' community called The Millworks. Although we won't yet be quite operational (we're aiming for January '09 to start offering workshops and memberships, and the cnc is going through an iteration), we -are- going to have a little party commemorating moving into the new place, and are eager to invite interested people, communicate our goals, and share ideas. (But mostly it's an excuse for a deadline to get ourselves cleaned up and presentable as soon as possible! ;-)We'll have snacks, drinks, and music from 7pm to 11pm or so, this Saturday. Our building is located at the Millworks, whose address is 2034 Leonard Ave. The address of our building is 2038 Leonard, but it's tucked away inside the art community. To find it, turn into the driveway at the Millworks and park in the paved lot. Then walk past a large building on your left; turn left onto the gravel lot, and then turn right past the warehouse; our brick building is tucked in the corner beneath the wooden awning. Please feel free to bring kids, interested friends, and something to eat or drink if you like (but not necessary).http://www.SteampunkLaboratory.com

So if you purchased a used ambulance... What would you do with it?

I work at a private ambulance company, and I made friends with the head mechanic and found out he may sell me a used diesel ambulance, fully functioning, for a little more than $1000. In order to justify my purchase, I would need an idea of what I could construct out of the ambulance I would now have in my possession.  My first thought was: A-TEAM VAN REPLICA I would speak with a couple tech colleges and offer them the ambulance for a semester, free of charge, for them to train on. It would be a prime example of the real world of a diesel mechanic's future career. Then go to the same, or a new tech college and find the car detailing or modification department and let them create the projected A-TEAM replica van. I would not only let them use a fully operational vehicle to modify to their liking, I would also use my above average graphic arts skills, and work history in direct mail advertising, to design a mailing to put out for them promoting their school and department of it, and then show awesome before and after pictures of the ambulance, and use it as an attentioN-getter to draw new students into their programs. A-TEAM VAN, with paint mods and maybe diesel engine modifications. ...Or I could mount large speakers in the external cabinets that i could just open up and lock them at 45 degrees, and stand in the middle of the back doors with a microphone and a couple computers mixing dance music. ...The lights and sirens and PA horns are all still in it and working.... I am just trying to drum up some of your creative passions and make you get out your thinking caps to run ideas by me and see what I might be able to do with this new toy! Lets get the ball rolling! I say an A-TEAM van would be sweet... What do you think? See attd, pictures.

ability of zombie in left for dead part 2

Smoker Appearance: An average-sized Infected with huge tumors all over its arms and face. Has a very long tongue as well. This tongue can be shed when the Smoker is injured, allowing them to get away. Sounds: Talk about an anti-smoking agenda. The Smoker makes all sorts of horrible wheezing and coughing sounds when idle. Launching the tongue creates a sort of slurping sound, and the music becomes dramatic whenever a survivor is being strangled to death. When they die, they explode with a puffing noise. Strengths: The Smoker is the longest-distance Infected and can easily separate groups of survivors through good use of its tongue. When a survivor is being strangled, they can't do anything to free themselves (much like the Hunter's pounce). This forces a teammate to run to the person and free them, potentially causing more problems for the survivors. They have a tendency to find the nooks and crannies where it is hard to see them, climb up on building, or move around in groups of regular infected in order to surprise the survivors. Weaknesses: In-between the Boomer and Hunter is where the Smoker's durability sits. They can only take a few shots before dying, making it essential for them to catch survivors off guard. When they grab a survivor, the survivor has a few seconds to fire at the Smoker before they become constricted. If they deal enough damage, the Smoker will let go and possibly even die. When constricting a survivor, any other survivor can bash or shoot the tongue or smoker to cause it to release the person they are strangling. Bashing the player counts as bashing the tongue, but shooting them does not. Special: Smokers are relatively harmless by themselves due to their weak damage output. However, much like the Boomer, they can turn an entire game around. If a smoker grabs and manages to strangle a player, it can force the other teammates to chase the player down and save them. On top of this, they often linger in large groups of common Infected, which will attack the strangled survivor and act as a shield for the Smoker. Tank Appearance: Muscle, muscles, and more muscles! The Tank wouldn't look out of place in Gears of War. They are gigantic, drag their knuckles along the ground, and run like apes. If you manage to miss seeing a Tank, you've got to be blind. A hilarious detail: Tanks have no lower jaws, so their tongues just dangle! Sounds: The Tank snorts, bellows, and generally sounds like an angry rhinoceros. The ground nearby trembles as they move, and the music gets very intense and action-oriented when one starts attacking the players. Crashing sounds are common as well, as they throw cars and chunks of landscape as well as rip apart doors. Strengths: Where to begin? The Tank is the single toughest Infected in the game. They can absorb an unholy amount of damage, forcing the entire team to work together to kill one. They can rip off chunks of the environment to hurl at the players, and will also throw cars. They can tear through certain parts of the environment, like pillars and barricades. Not even safehouse doors can stand up to a Tank. A player that is hit by a Tank will be flung, heavily damaged, and will be stunned on landing, unable to move. Weaknesses: A Tank can only take on a single survivor at a time, where all survivors can unload on them. They can't bash through obstacles, so walls and certain environmental objects will hinder them. They have to climb up like any normal Infected, as they can't leap. Any long-range attack can be easily dodged. They have a huge profile, which makes it almost impossible to miss them. Special: Tanks are big, dumb brutes, so use this to your advantage. They take time to find a target, and will get slowed down by environmental obstacles. With one person acting as bait, a Tank can be taken out extremely quickly as long as anybody, bait included, has a semi-automatic shotgun. Tanks are also highly flammable, and will burn until they die. Witch Appearance: Almost-naked, panting, gaunt, disturbing-looking woman with huge claws. Always has a red light on them, no matter where they may be in a level. Witches are the exact opposite of Tanks in appearance, being thin, small, and low-profile. Sounds: There is no creepier ambience in Left 4 Dead than that which surrounds a Witch. The Witch cries and sobs as long as it has been undisturbed, and the music becomes very creepy and disturbing as one gets closer and closer to a Witch. When they have been startled, it screams and chases down the offending survivor, letting loose random cries. Strengths: The Witch is the second-toughest Infected, next to the Tank. They also deal the most damage out of any Infected, as they are able to incapacitate (Easy through Advanced) or kill (Expert) any survivor with a single strike. They have great hearing, and any gunshots or explosions nearby will startle them, causing them to chase down the survivor that startled them. Weaknesses: The Witch will only chase down a single survivor before running away. The survivor which is closest and dealing the most damage is a target, but the one that startled the Witch will usually be the one that ends up taking the hit if it gets close enough. They're fast, but are slowed down a lot by doors and other obstacles. They can be sneaked by if the survivors turn off flashlights and walk instead of run. Special: The Witch is the only special Infected that can't be controlled by a player, for obvious reasons. A survivor with a semi-automatic shotgun can sneak up on a Witch (right next to one, in fact), point their gun at her, and unload a full clip into her before she can fully respond. This is the easiest way to take out Witches that are blocking essential paths, such as ones that are in subway cars in the second level of No Mercy.

Ch. 3 In Which Old Science Creates New Technologies

Hey Instructastorians! I know I haven’t been keeping my Instructables Intern Blog updated, so in advance I apologize for the lateness in this update. Things have really picked up since the last time I posted anything here! As some of you might remember back, a couple of weeks ago Instructables HQ, which where herein be referred to as Instructables Laboratories (Seriously, that’s what they call the building here!), held a massive social event involving Liquid Nitrogen and fast freeze Ice Cream. It was a rising success for everyone and more than 70 people visited our lab! The Ice Cream was fantastic to, due to our delicious confectionary staff particularly Angie, and our Maker Faire ticket raffle was awesome. As for the Faire itself, I unfortunately was not able to participate in the Instructables Booth, being more than slightly preoccupied with my own DIY PIXAR stand, but I heard it was great. They managed to give away almost all of the Lab’s business cards and even managed to sell several dozens of our Robot T-Shirts! Sure beats the hell out of being stuck in a dark room, with several hundreds of people jamming into your personal space, while Tesla Coils scream Classical Music at 56 decibels… BUT, last week after the Faire, things became sadly much more subtle. Several people around The Lab were still recuperating from the hectic events of the Faire and there wasn’t much to do around the office. Being recently promoted to the job of Delivery (meaning I get to control all outward shipment of prizes and gifts), my goal was focused on trying to ship out a lot of the past closed contest prizes from a couple of months past. Thankfully Instructables had a monthly event to obliterate this post MF doldrums- INSTRUCTABLES BUILD DAY! This is held on the last Friday of every month, where most work is momentarily cast aside and everyone instead works on their own personal Building projects! SWEET! So for my project, I ended up creating something really cool involving PVC pipe connectors, a Shop Vac and several feet of clear vinyl tubing ('ible coming soon).  I'm making a note here- HUGE SUCCESS! As for myself, even though I might’ve gotten used to waking up at 6:00 AM to commute 1.5 hours to San Francisco, I’m still completely thrilled to be working here. Always something new going on and never a dull day at the office Lab. OH and I finally got my own key! Now I can enter our labs without setting off the Turret Defenses! -New Intern 2011, SHIFT!

Well this " I like x " thing became complicated Answered

TL;DR version at the bottom, below the line Oh you know, just one of those " I like x " situations, except with a twist. So yeah, I like this girl, we talk for short the small short talk (lasts for about 0.8 seconds). She might know that I have a crush on her (since about 30% of the class knows, of which 80% are friends with this person), but I'm uncertain. Either way, I'm not shy about that. The problem lies in the fact that the 24% of the class that's friends with her knows. Normally, they're always with / around her, which makes talking with her (in the first place) already challenging. Imagine maybe 4 people interrupting your conversation only 2 seconds in. It's like trying to play a video game with the worst ping ever; your talk getting interrupted and all. I would just like to have a chat with her that lasts over 15 seconds, at least, that doesn't involve official business (all talks with her so far involved school projects and such). To my assessment, she's astoundingly similar yet the opposite of me... She's simple, yet highly organized (that's me). She doesn't wanna stand out (like me). Generally silent, shy and reserved (somewhat like me, most of the time anyways). Now here's the part I would like to relate to, but I don't know how: music. She plays the piano, and I play the violin. Now, these are performing arts; you perform these in front of people. We don't play the same instruments, therefore we can't talk about it. Composing a piece? Not a chance. That's my work mode wherein I become secluded from the world (bad impression). Intention: I would just like to make friends, thank you very much (did it last year, too, though without the complications) Age: 13 turning 14 (me) and she's 13 More details: -Freshmen -I can control myself, thank you Additionally: I don't know if she likes me or not. I just need to become friends with her to clear some things up and... make more friends? I'm not bringing my hopes up, though. I have an opportunity to start off our friendship (which is due in less than a week), since we have this Christmas party going and we're supposed to have a gift exchange with a "randomly chosen" person which is done by just pulling out folded pieces of paper and.. yeah, there's the name. The wishlist is simple, yet a tad pricey (just roughly $10, but compared to my allowance). This is getting too long Questions: -How do I make friends now? -How do I sustain this? I'm not good at making friends. I either attract them to me or it was a need that developed. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ TL;DR version: I like a girl and I want to make friends with her, but then I can't talk with her because of massive external social pressure from her ever-present friends that know I have a crush on her. How can I approach her and sustain our friendship? Thank you.
