Nerd Alert!

I am heavily involved in letterboxing. I've seen letterboxing posts here on instructables, but just in case it's not a familiar topic, it's a hobby similar to geocaching. Especially when we have events and get-togethers we will often engage in self-deprecating humor about our nerd status. For upcoming events I would like to create either of the following props, and would appreciate any ideas on how to approach them: (1) Nerd Detector--some sort of box that would have some sort of motion or proximity sensor that would trigger an alarm, siren, etc., when approached. (2) Nerd Tester--something akin to the "love tester" from old, old-school arcades. Someone would grip a handle, and some sort of meter or display would indicate the participant's (supposed) level of geekery. Thanks for any ideas!!!

Geeks, Nerds and Dorks.

Here we are boys and girls (and others) . How about a lively discussion about the differences and similarities between the above groups. What about examples and even names of celebrities who fit a category. Whoops that was an oxymorone. A celebrity who is a geek, nerd or dork. Anyway I look forward to your lively remarks.

Archaeologists + Cake nerds, recipes needed!

Sidestone Press is looking for nerdy archaeology cake recipes, if they get enough they're planning on turning them into a book. They contacted me after seeing my dinosaur excavation cake and need more nerdy cake recipes to make a book. This could be a fun crossover, but they can't make the book if they don't get enough content. Make an Instructable out of it and it's like a double-win! Here's the Facebook page, submit your recipe today and have it in a book!

( I've seen a pair in the movie Wild Hogs ) It's those glasses that come apart in the middle, and snap back together. I want to know what they are called, where I can get them, and at what price. I might need glasses in the future, and those would be the ultimate meek accessory.

Nerd Pride Movie Night: Real Genius, 8pm 4/20 at Instructables HQ

We're hosting Nerd Pride Movie Night here at Instructables HQ at 8pm Friday the 20th of April. First movie: Real Genius starring a young Val Kilmer. A fabulous nerd comedy classic from 1985- see it and recognize the source or all those great quotes.Plot summary: A group of exceptionally bright students are unwittingly involved in the development of a military weapon. We'll provide the popcorn.Location: Instructables, 2175 Monarch St, Alameda, CANote that the mapping programs don't get our location exactly right. We're in the control tower at the old Alameda naval air base.Directions hereWhat is Nerd Pride Movie Night?Nerd Pride movies celebrate nerds doing their thing. These are not just movies for nerds, or movies nerds like to watch- these movies are classic examples of nerds using their science and tech skills to overcome overwhelming (and often ridiculous) odds. We'll be alternating Instructables Show & Tell with Nerd Pride Movie Night every month until we think of something even more entertaining to do. I'm toying with the idea of Bad Science Movie Night (The Core!), but we'll see how the nerd classics fare first. We're starting off with the truly classic Real Genius, and will follow up in June with Ghostbusters. Feel free to offer your suggestions, but be warned that I can't stand Buckaroo Banzai, so will veto it with prejudice no matter how many votes it receives. Fire away.

The "N-Word". The bad one!

Ok, I hear lots of name calling out there. Sometimes I even hear the N-Word. Not just one N-Word but multiple N-Words. So clue me in. Which is worse, a "noob", a "nerd", a "ninny" or a "numpty"? I just need to know how serious the name calling is. So give me the offensiveness levels of the previously mentioned N-Words on a scale from one to ten (with ten as the most offensive).

is it possible to root my sam-sung intercept (sprint) with the froyo update? and what about flash player? [answered]

Is it possible to root my samsung intercept (sprint) with the froyo update? what really pisses me off about this phone is that it has NO flash player at all. ive tried installing it from the adobe website, Googleing "flash plater 10 for 2.1", and looked throughout the market. its not there (i thought it is there for 2.2 froyo but NOOOO this phone has to be horrible). also moved the app from "downloads" to "tunnybrowser> app_plugins" nothing works any suggestions? can anyone offer me some simple rooting and flashing this phone? also, will writing a sudo command in the "ROOT" folder work? it seems like i can. using this phone it so far seems i can "create" a folder in the ROOT folder. will this work or will it brick my phone? using some apps from the market, i discovered my phones CPU does not go higher than 199MHz. this REALLY UNPLEASANTLY PISSED ME OFF. NO WONDER WHY MY PHONE IS SO DAMN SLOW! how do i increase it to the 800MHz it was rated for? and what would happen if i tried to over-clock it to 1 ghz?

What Version of HDCP Does the Xbox 360 Require? Other HD Questions...NERD ALERT!

I might get an Xbox 360 some day (say I win the lottery). My HD TV has support for version one of HDCP (High Definition Content Protection, supposed to protect against copying, yeah right). Is version one sufficient to use an Xbox 360 with my TV? Also I only have one DVI port on my TV, no HDMI (it's two years old, my dad kinda jumped into it). We have our HDTV Star Choice satellite receiver hooked up to that, so I don't wanna have to swap out the satellite for the 360 everytime I wanna play in HD (I have a CRT TV in my room which I usually play games on). Can I get a Y shaped switcher thingy for my TV? I know DVI, unlike HDMI, doesn't support all in one audio and video in one tiny HDMI cable. Does the 360 have a seperate output for audio, too?

Inexplicable Popularity

This is an issue that has always puzzled me, and more recently affected me. And it is entirely based on the phenomenon of an old forum topic being suddenly and randomly restored to the front of the board after an extended vacation to the back of the list. My topic, "Facebook for Nerds" has been one of the recent reincarnations to be affected and no matter how much it pleases me that someone new felt a need to comment on my original post, It begs the question of "why now" and "why this one"?

I know that I'm not the only one in the community of nerds here that is loving Ubuntu's newest release! Now that I finally have compiz fusion running smoothly on my 64 bit system, I think that it blows the legs off of an already feeble Windows Vista. Even some of my less computer-literate friends, after seeing my system, are trying live cd's and considering dual-boots! I think it's pretty exciting seeing a more user-friendly Linux with standard eye-candy to lure even more away from the Microsoft OS monopoly. Still a ways to go though...

New house, living in loft, need furniture, help?

I'm moving into a new house. Decided to move into the loft. Basically, it's the V of the roof, like an attic. I can just barely stand in the center, but I expect to do little more in there than sleep, use the computer (at a desk, IE sitting), and poo (there's a bathroom, weird, huh?). I can use an air mattress, so that's easy. Now I just need ideas for a cheap desk (I'd put the computer on the floor, but I sit for hours, because I'm a lazy-ass and a nerd, so it's gotta be comfy) and a way to store clothes (lotsa shirts, socks, some pants, regular stuff) without big-ass bulky dressers. Everything has gotta fit in an attic-style hole in the ceiling and go up a ladder. Ideas?

How much RAM is on a stick?

I bought a $20 computer from the Salvation Army, and it is in working condition. However, I dont have a spare mouse, monitor, keyboard, or power cord for it. So I did like a normal nerd, and harvested it. I got all the internals(It was running a Pentium II on windows 98, so it's pretty old) including the RAM. It had 3 sticks-1 SIMM and 2 DIMMs. On the SIMM, it clealy said that it had 64MB. However, on the other two, it says nothing about size from what I can see. There is a label, if it means something, that says: MT16LSDT464AG-662C1      9807D      308210                      5000227 On the first label, and: MT16LSDT464AG-662C1 9808D 30821C                     5000227 On the second. I would really like to know how much is on these sticks, so I know if I should use them for myself, sell them, or just trash them. Thank you!

New Editor Relased

We've released an updated version of the editor. Some new features include: It's powered by jquery, which will mean nothing to you if you're not a huge nerd. Automatically saves after doing anything but typing. Remember to save anything you type, just like a word processor. Incorporates a new uploader, which will hopefully suck less than the current one. Should be faster, I think? I'm not sure about this point yet, still have to see it in the wild. Will definitely fail tonight, there are caching issues. I hope I can delete this line in the morning! Various bugfixes, the previous editor was heavily in need of going away forever, heavily. Dances when no one is watching. PROVE IT DOESN'T. As always, please let us know if you have any problems. Or, also, let us know if you think it's awesome. Nobody ever does that. It's lonely here. Send cupcakes.

What can I do with this salvaged laptop LCD panel? Answered

So I pulled apart a non-working laptop from the 90s a while back, and while (being a computer nerd) I made great use of other components, I don't know how to use this LCD panel. I know the basics of computer hardware, but there really isn't a standard application for this LCD panel in my basket of stuff. The exact model is a 13.3" Samsung LT133X7-124 pulled from an old Sony VAIO laptop. It has a 1024x768 max resolution (not bad). Only the panel (intact), no wires for the most part or case. Bare screen, as seen in the pic. I was thinking of making a digital wall picture frame or digital clock, but most all of the existing DIYs or Instructables list an actual, complete monitor as the display component. Thus, I'm hoping somebody can help point me in the right direction with this hopeful project,

More Alternative Merit Badges.

Scoochmaroo showed us the Nerd Merit Badges a couple of years ago. Now you can award a merit badge to your favourite over-achiever. These twelve badges cost $10 each, or $114 for the set, so I doubt they'll be adorning many sleeves, but they're a great idea, and super inspiration for those who design their own digital patches. Early Halloween Costume Question (Button Costume- What should I call myself?)

I know it's early, but today my friend and I were talking about what we wanted to be for Halloween. Since I bought a very expensive costume last year, I wanted to make a costume this year using what I have. I collect buttons, so I had the idea that I could pin them all over a shirt and a pair of pants. My friend suggested that I use specific types of pins in a theme (ex: political buttons for a political activist, video game and science buttons for a geek/nerd). But, I want to use all of my various types of buttons on one costume. I want my Yankees buttons, Evanescence buttons, political spoof buttons, abstract art buttons, and UAA stop codon buttons all at the same time! What can I say that I am dressed up as (beside a button collector)?

70-note "Bottle Organ"

Here's one for you... I'm looking to create a 70 note bottle organ, inspired by this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzucpFgi7Xk Except I'm wanting to build mine in a more "automatic" state - played via MIDI notes, an arduino and lots and lots of solenoids making spoons hit the bottles.. That side of it I've got covered thanks to other excellent instructables which have taught me a lot about micro electronics. What I am currently trying to work out is if there is a way to change the pitch of bottles in any way except simply adding water. Would another liquid achieve the same results with less "spill risk"? Does it even need to be a liquid? I'm guessing it needs to be a liquid as I believe the physics of the noise made when a bottle is struck is based on the water absorbing vibrations, making them slower and lowering the pitch. If anyone has experience tuning multiple bottles to be struck as an instrument then please do reply! Alternatively if anyone has any novel suggestions for things which would be easier to persuade 70 notes out of then please also reply! End goal - be able to play flight of the bumblebee at full speed with chords and out-nerd the guys in the video. Ideally on bottles. Many thanks! Leo
