Usb male - male cable to connect 2 computer without a 'bride'
Although my flyback transformer driver appears to work very well up to 18V operation, the arc length is not satisfactory. I increased the voltage to 25V which allows 2 to 3 inch stable / hot arcs. However my 250V 18A rated MOSFETs appear to fail periodically esp. When adjusting the potentiometers (for adjustments to drive frequency and duty cycle) I Tried sticking a 1N4007 reverse biased diode across but I don't think it changed anything. I still see >300v positive voltage transients. I also tried using a neon lamp without a ballast resistor, but it did not appear to change the waveform, and glows way too brightly. I tried using 3 (really old but giant) 30V zener diodes in series but they latched up, failed, and went up in smoke lol! So clearly these HV transients have a lot of "oomph" behind them. D: I am reading an article on maxim electronics page about snubbers https://www.maximintegrated.com/en/app-notes/index.mvp/id/848 and I'll experament with some of the circuits presented there but I can't really calculate values needed for the components because I have not characterized my transformer with custom windings and a loose ferrite core. Those things will be subject to change anyways since I do not plan on supplying a specific flyback transformer with this kit. So I want something that is more universally going to work. This high voltage is just PITA to deal with. How can I reduce it to 200v without hurting performance?

I have a Motorola SURFboard SB5101U cable modem. It has one Ethernet port and one USB ("square" type) port. I have an Apple Airport Express wireless plugged into the Ethernet port. Here's the problem. I want to use "MagicJack Plus" (VoiP) without plugging it into the computer (THE difference from the "regular" MagicJack, that it (the Plus) can be plugged directly into the modem, bypassing the computer, so the computer doesn't have to be left on 24/7 for your phone service). My question is, can a simple Ethernet (pigtail) splitter be used to plug both the MagicJack Plus and the Apple Airport Express wireless into the modem? I know this can be "Physically" but is the "signal" degraded in any way to the two units?

My TV has a USB port for plugging in a thumb drive to play videos and music. As do several other devices Im aware of. What I would like is a device that when plugged into my TV or such will pretend to be nothing more than a thumbdrive but actually be a wireless adapter that connects to my network and the 1TB network storage so I can access all my files at once.

Hackerspaces have gotten pretty popular among makers across the world. They are a great place to borrow tools and share knowledge. But what about people that don't have local hackerspaces? The solution: social network. Digital hackerspaces! Great for people that don't have physical buildings, or can't afford to round one up. If you think about it, that's what instructables is! The idea is to have video chat and forums to share knowledge for projects. If you guys would voice your ideas, that would be great!

I have an AT&T USB internet card, with unlimited internet usage. I want to know how to set up a wireless connection in my home using the usb as the primary internet source, from my main computer. that way family or friends can just connect to the network from their laptops instead of using my computer, or me sticking the usb into each computer as needed (the thing cost 50 bucks for insurance LOL) I would like this to work like wi-fi if possible

So recently I saw that my ex-partner's computer was connected to my network. I saw it before and had a little freak, but I checked and my remote access control thing was off, so I didn't worry. And his computer's name disappeared from my network list. Today it is back. But what does it mean?? what can he do? has he done it consciously? I should say we played Minecraft a few times together and created servers... but I'm not sure if that's the same thing, would that put him in my network? We also have Log me in hamachi... When I click his computer it asks me to type in account name and password, which i don't know. My user account had no password (i just added one). I want to know if he's joined my network consciously, or can it just happen sometimes? And if he has joined on purpose, what can he do/see?

So if you google "Home networking" you will come up with a ton of articles about home networking "basics", well I have reached the point where basic is just not enough. I have ..... 9 or 10 computers....and I want to do something to expand my network even more (not really in size but in awsomeness), my house is wired with cat 5e and has wireless. I guess im at the medium level of networking knowledge, I dont know how to program unless its HTML but I definatley know my way around a computer. My network consists of three desktops, one attached to an LCD TV as a media center, one is just a workstation and the other soon will be in the gameroom as a media center. I also have three wireless laptops connecting to my wireless router, one operational thinclent connected to my FTP server through RDP and two networked printers. I'll attach a diagram

I've spent hours searching the internet, but not a found an answer yet. When I use the add a printer wizard, I followed the steps as shown in the pictures below. Everything is going great, until I see my network (MSHOME) with no printer underneath (last picture). The network printer does work for the 2 Mac computers in my house, but it won't even show up on the 2 Microsoft computers. I need to print from the Microsoft computer (and not the Mac) because Papakuru paper-craft files ( .pdo file) can only be opened on a Microsoft computer. I really need to print the paper-craft patterns so my little brother can make a paper-craft Daft Punk Halloween mask! My OP system is Microsoft XP, running on a Dell computer. The network printer is hooked up to a mac computer (if that matters) Please help!!!!

I tried to use the Instructables app to write an instructable. I loved it, writing an instructable as you go and clicking the camera button was great, made it really easy. BUT when I got done and went to publish it I clicked publish and it said it was uploading photos. I laid my phone down, Moto G running kitkat 4.4.2 on the counter, when I came back it said network error unable to upload. So I clicked done and tried to upload again, this time it immediately said network error couldn't upload. So I completely closed the app tried again, same. Restarted Phone, same. All the while having a strong WIFI signal. So as last resort, I cleared app cache, well, this deleted my instructable........ Those should really be stored in a separate file that is not erased by a cache clear. So what was wrong? I had a great internet signal, there was NO network problems. Webpages and instructables in the app loaded fast.

I am on the CCNA networking track at my local college, so a friend gave me a managed switch he was about to recycle so that I could play around with it and learn equipment that wasn't Cisco. He said that a few ports were bad, but other than that the switch was fine. When I power it on, the self-check light starts blinking, along with the red fault light. I assume that is because of the bad port(s). It does not output anything at all to putty... even during boot. I've tried pressing the clear button and the reset button, but nothing changes. The switch is a HP Procurve 2424M. Does anyone have a suggestion of something else I could try? Thanks!

Hello there, I am a network administrator and trying to create a simple device to test the alarms on our systems. Since I am not an electrician of any sort, I have an idea of what I need, but no idea of parts or names to order. Basically, I need to have a basic on/off switch with button that I can wire to a CAT5 cable. Simple enough, stops traffic at the push of a button but thats the obvious part. I also need to have some control over how long my connection times out, and after some research, I think a timer relay does that, but I can't be sure. It just needs to turn the activity back on after it goes off say between 1 second and 10 seconds off, the connection turns back on. If I can accomplish that, than I would also like to add a dimmer type device such as that of a light switch dimmer, but smaller and working with less voltage. So... Can this be done with all 3 electric devices? The closest thing I found in searching was some generic Lag Switch, but it did give me a starting idea of how to design it. I drew a simple draft of what I had in mind. Any help by some electric gooroo's would be most appreciated. Thanks! Jonathan

This is the official forum post for the virus problems some users are experiencing with our ad networks. From now on please post all virus reports here. One or more of the ad networks that serve advertisements on the site has been loading ads that are infected with a virus. We have been monitoring the situation for almost two weeks now, working with users to identify the infected networks, and then shutting them down from our ad rotation. Despite our best efforts, the Instructables Staff has not been able to reproduce the problem locally, either because the viruses are appearing in only certain geographic areas, or because we work on Macs. As a result, we've been relying on users to help us identify the problem and target the infected ad networks. Please understand that we are not serving these ads intentionally, nor is there a virus on Instructables directly, or our servers, and that we are doing everything possible to shut down the suspected ad networks that are causing this problem. Here's what we know so far The virus appears to be what Microsoft calls a Rogue Antivirus. It basically tricks users into thinking that their computer is infected with a virus, when their machines are in fact just fine. A fake virus scan window alerts users that their computer is infected. Once alerted with this news, users are misleadingly encouraged to install malicious software on their machine. The alerts seem to pop up after users are redirected away from Instructables, sometimes immediately after loading a page on the site, or in some reports, just from users dragging their mouse over the ad spot. The problem appears to have only effected a very small percentage of our users, as hundreds of thousands of people visit the site each day and only a few dozen reports have come in over the last two weeks. What to do Don't click on any links that instruct you to install software onto your machine. Update the definitions for your virus program and install the latest updates for your operating system. If you should experience any of these redirects or virus screens, please read the section below about how you can help us, and post your information to this forum topic. How you can help If you see a pop-up warning you that you are infected, or if you are redirected away from Instructables and onto another page that triggers a virus alert, take a screen shot (command + shift + 3 in mac; print screen button in windows) close the page down, and then come to this forum topic and post as much as you can describing what you were doing before the problem happened, what happened when the virus attacked, and what you did to fix the problem. Please include the following details with your post if possible - the following information is necessary for us to identify which ad network the virus is coming from: any ads serving on the page that you remember description of malware the URL of the page on Instructables you were viewing direct URLs of malware screenshots city, state and or country you are located in what operating system and browser you are using If you have Firebug installed, you can use it to inspect the problem pages and gather even more information which you can post to this topic. Previous forum topics about this problem include "Ad-Problem", "Virus on Instructables" and "instant start virus alter programme". While these forum topics are still useful in identifying the problem, we need to congregate all new reports here with the bulleted information above so we can gather the necessary facts to pass along to the ad networks to start attacking this problem as aggressively as we can. I've aggregated offline screen shots, emails, and other useful comments below that contain useful clues to get the ball rolling. Please accept our deepest apologies for this unacceptable frustration and continue to work with us so we can completely eliminate this virus problem our ad networks. ****1/12/2010 Update**** There's reason to believe that the virus could have infected your browsers cache, and thus be re-infecting your computer from there. As per the instructions given in the New York Times Article "What to do if you saw an antivirus pop up ad" please follow the steps below before posting any new virus reports on this forum thread so we can be sure that your computer is not repeatedly infecting itself regardless of the state of the site. 1) Close the screen 2) Clear your browsers cache (directions here) 3) Scan computer with a legitimate anti virus software 4) Run any and all updates to your operating system If you are then still seeing warning messages and pop ups about the malware, then please do let us know so we can continue to track and fight this problem. We've shut down all of our ad networks that aren't absolutely essential to the running of the site and are working with the last two remaining networks to troubleshoot this problem. All data shows that the ad networks are responsible for the virus attacks that many sites have been experiencing around the web recently (this is not just a problem on Instructables ), and we've got to take the fight to them to effectively stop the attacks.

As you know or not Arduino Ethernet shield is made from TCPIP Hardware chip (W5100 of Wiznet Company) and other component. Recently I heard that TCPIP Hardware stack (with Hardware chip) is more stronger than S/W stack from networking attack such as flooding, spoofing and so on. But I want to know technical basis why Hardware tcpip chip is "Unattackable" from networking attack. If there is a anyone have a knowledge about networking via internet... please share your knowldege or your thinking.

Hello, I have a Toshiba portege m900 laptop. After a couple of years of connecting properly, it suddenly cannot connect to my home network. It just says Connections are available and displays the home network, but when I click connect, it eventually returns with "windows can't connect to ". Other wifi capable devices in the house connect normally, just as they have done before. The laptop can still connect to other networks that I have access to. When I start the troubleshooter it returns with 1) Windows cant connect to the hidden network , 2) problem with wireless adapter or access point 3) A network cable is not properly plugged and may be broken. I have been downloading large-sized files before the time I can't connect. Does it have anything to do with my sudden disconnection? Thank you for your help!

I was hoping that SOMEONE made a telephone answering machine with a network connection so that it would do its thing like any other digital answering machine but the messages could be managed over my network. So I did a google search and it seems others have also been interested in such a thing - albeit the most recent queries being at least a year old. The answers were - "I already have that on Vonage" - sorry - don't want voip!! And various programs that would let your computer, with voice modem, do that including linux programs. Well - I don't have a full blown computer on all the time and am not likely to. And so I thought - how about a small computer - but don't have one - couldn't think of one ... And then I thought ..... Raspberry PI!!?? So small and low power that it could even be put in an old answering machine case and low power draw. Does anyone think its enough computer to do this? Anyone up to inventing one?

My title is a simplified version of my problem. I accidentally clicked uninstall instead of disable on my wireless network adapter. I don't have the CD to install it. My WLAN adapter is a Cisco Linksys WUSB54GC Wireless Network Adapter version 3. I've uninstalled the device multiple times but when I reinstall it, it simply says 'The name is already in use or a service display name' and then when I go back to device manager it says the name of the adapter and then a #14 and the next time I attempt to reinstall it, it says #15 then #16 and so on. What I am doing is I'm going to device manager, updating the driver software for my adapter, then clicking 'Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer' and then clicking 'Have Disk' and choosing the netr system information file. After that, that's when it gives me the name is already in use or a service display name error. I've reset my computer a couple times, searched bing and google a lot and got similar problems but none specific to my situation. Please help, I don't recall trying to install or uninstall in any certain order so my mess there could have corrupted something, maybe. Thanks!

Hello all, I am having recent issues with my home PC running windows 7. I have working internet with a modem that has a built in router (It's Rogers brand new Hitron modem, the white skyscraper looking one). Here is my current issue. When i plug in my PC through a cat5 cable it seems to screw with all internet connections. It gives me internet for roughly 30 seconds (very slow loads) and then eventually says I am connected to my network but no internet. In turn, this also creates all devices to not have internet acees as well, PS4 hard wired, XBox One hard wired and also my mobile devices connected through the WiFi. If I unplug my PC LAN cable from the modem, both my wired consoles work and can access internet and same for any mobile device connected to the WiFi. I have done a bunch of possibly theories to help renew my ip. All my DNS settings within my network adapter are set to obtain address automatically, i have tried net flushes and release/renew with command prompt.. At one point I reset my modem and created a new network, this seemed to fix the problem for about a day or two, but now again it is back to only allowing me to access internet when i do not have my main PC plugged in. So very strange. Is there something else I can do? Does my computer have a virus that is hijacking the internet? any info would be much appreciated. I am a big gamer and as much as I enjoy the console, I am really missing getting on the PC Has anyone every experience anything like this?

I have a fairly extensive lan in my home that is constantly expanding. I want to do some custom wiring and started looking into building my own cat 6 cables. When I started shopping for the wire I noticed a lot of complaints about wiring not being capable of carrying gigabit speeds, CCA being sold as solid copper etc. Now I'm questioning the wiring I already have, wondering if it might be the culprit for random problems. I want to find a way to test my current wiring and anything I make in the future. But as anyone with experience knows a cable certifier is thousands of dollars. Then I got to thinking if i have two computers capable of gigabit speeds shouldn't I be able to run a cable between them and verify the performance of the cable? I was hoping someone here will have the experience I lack to make this a reality. Also if it was possible to make a smaller arduino based tool that would be amazing. This seems like a tool damn near everyone could use these days.

Courtesy of Dr.Professor Jake Biggs, I was able to be innovative with my XBOX 360 and share my dial-up connection with my 360 through my computer. (The instructable can be found here.) However, seeing as I have a unique case, I thought this would be the best medium to use in looking for an answer. So let me explain my situation. Through much effort, I was able to procure the know-how of using my cell phone (LG Env3, not the touch though) as a modem. It is able to give me 7.2 Mbps at all times of the day and night via USB. I then realized it sets it up as a dial-up connection and decided to search out a way to share that connection with my XBOX 360 so as to get XBOX Live. Thanks to Jake Biggs, I was able to succeed in this endeavor. Now I am wondering if there is any way possible to open the appropriate ports under Firewall settings in order to get an Open NAT setting rather than a Moderate one. For those of you who play XBOX Live, you know how frustrating it is to not have an Open setting. Also it would be much appreciated if someone could help me out with the IP addressing. Many thanks to any who come by and put in their 2 cents about this. I'm open to any suggestions or theories.

I seem to be fighting a loosing battle with my network, things just never work like they're supposed to.For example, sometimes I have to reinstall my network printer on both my laptop and my ibook to get it to print again, even when the server has been running fine sans problems for a week, it will randomly do this shit.Another example is, right now I "was" just trying to copy some music over to an external firewire drive on my server that I have shared. I had the permissions on everyone set to full access yesturday but I noticed when I restarted my server, it did not detect my drive properly until I re-seated the firewire cable :S Thusly somehow it lost my share configuration for my music folder.I set it up, but this time I left it on read only because I wasn't planning on adding any music earlier, itunes and everything was working fine when i mounted the volume. I went on there and changed the permissions back to full access just 20 minutes ago as I wanted to add some music to my drive, I right clicked in my mac os x explorer and made a new folder just to see if I could copy over now, it worked, aswell as deleting the folder. So I drag the 60mb folder of mp3 files over, and it just sat there...and sat...and sat.... until eventually giving me an error -36, upon searching about, it means "-36 ioErr I/O error (bummers)".That's straight from the horse's mouth, and that really tells me nothing, what exactly does "bummers" mean???It's frustrating for me non stop, and it does this to me with other shares in mac os x, or they will randomly disconnect for no reason, sometimes after 15 minutes or sometimes after 3 days. I will note too, I can't connect to my server now, it just says missing alias in the mac os finder. Yet I can VNC into it no problem, wowa, but just upon checking my pc just now, it can't access any shares on it either, the cursour is just spinning, however I usually have no problems with my pc's accessing it, other than the printer thing.I'm just so god damned frustrated with my set up, I've looked it up and down until I was exhausted, several times, and I know I must be missing somewhere along the way, but I just can't understand how it doesn't work like I want it to. Shares are set up, firewire is out of the question, permissions set up, mac os x can log into server, check. It's all good until I actually go to use it for something when I really need it.I'll have to restart my server now to get it to work properly again...it was fine until I vnc'd into it to change the permissions, im gonna try restarting it now and just access it from it's own screen, perhaps vnc has something to do with it.Oh and to clear up any questions before they're asked, this is how I have it configured, as quickly and detailed as I can explain it:My network starts at my ADSL +2 4 port router/modem thingy (Speedtouch 546, it has it's own connection issues on the isp's side, but they don't seem impact LAN side data flow)That then gets split off to:*Port 1: iBook G4*Port 2: 25 ft. cable to 8 port switch (I'll explain that a little further down)*Port 3: 50 ft. cable to apple airport basestation in livingroom for wifi*Port 4: My main AMD PcMy ibook is configured for DHCP with manual address 192.168.1.64The switch just makes the modem think I have like 5 computers hooked into one port lol...My airport, for a long time I thought was perfectly fine as far as usuage with my thinkpad, however, I've been noticing the last few times it's powered on, the airport connects to the thinkpad, but assigns it a 169.xxx.xxx.xx address which does not exist on my network, but if I turn the wifi off and back on, it connects fine and assigns it a dynamic ip on my 192.168.1.xxx network.Other than that, I have it in bridge mode so that it acts pretty much the same as if the laptop were wired via ethernet, vnc, filetransfers, and online games all work good albeit the wireless delay, still not bad in VNC however. My AMD machine is set up for static ip at 192.168.1.66Switch:Port 2 of my modem goes to port 8 (uplink) of my switch.*Port 1: My server (Configured for static ip at 192.168.1.65)The rest are just my B&W; g3 setup for static ip at 192.168.1.68 and an old P2 I believe is at .69 and a 1.5 amd athlon aswell setup on 192.168.1.71, all of those in no particular order except I made sure my server stays on port 1.I did have everything setup so my server was on port 2 of my modem all by itself, but I needed the switch over by my server so I moved it, however, I was still having these problems before hand, even when my server was running on a completely different motherboard! Also, maybe could someone tell me why my server won't boot unless I have a bootable disk in the drive (IE: my windows 2003 server install disk), just so it goes to "press any key to boot cd.......", of course I don't push any key, and it continues to boot into windows. However, if I dare start my server without that disc in there, it simply goes to "Invalid System Disk error, insert correct/valid disk (can't remember it word for word), and push enter"I've tried reinstalling windows server 03, and same deal, yet it's using the same hard disk for the OS that my previous motherboard used and booted from not a problem.I really apologize for the long post... but I've quite literally burnt myself out and lost all motivation with continuing to expand my computer network and so I figured I would ask for help on here for one last resort, but I know many people probably won't read it due to the long post, but I have a lot of problems I don't have answers for and I need to explain myself somewhat thoroughly or else I won't find the proper solution for the problem, now will I?

The network is two PCs and a Mac sharing the same broadband modem.
For some reason my laptop will only connect to an unsecure linksys network and not my own personal, secured network despite entering the network key and the fact that other devices connect to it seamlessly. It simply always defaults to this unsecure network. I've already removed and added my home network as an attempt to troubleshoot the issue, but still no luck. The laptop simply always reverts back to the unsecure network. My home network has more bars and is listed on the top of the list for preferred networks. The laptop in question is at least 6yrs old. Runs on WindowsXP. Is a Sony. Is there something I should do with the drivers or how it is configured.
