New Zealand Earthquake.

At about 1pm. (lunch time) 22/02/2011 a large earthquake occured in the centre of the city. Over 65 are confirmed dead. The Cathedral has collapsed with people in the spire/steeple. I don't want  any correspondence, I am just keeping the Instructables family informed, in-case your media doesn't cover it. Bye for now.

Flying hovercraft!

Bungee jumping, kite-boarding... Why do all the extremest sports seem to come from New Zealand? The lightweight, canvas-covered wings are attached to the craft with what he calls a "Jesus pin". "If that comes out, you see Jesus," he said. Because the hovercraft is not classed as an aircraft under New Zealand aviation laws, the operator does not require a pilot's licence. Daily Telegraph.

Earthquake, NZ

So just incase this is too small to make it onto American radar, since Saturday morning 4.30am there was a 7.2 earthquake in Christchurch New Zealand (my home town atm) and 100's of aftershocks up to 5.1 as of today (Wednesday) It's been an experience, I've had the odd quake or two but no way near this extent. The house I'm staying in has been fine, an older wooden one, but there's lots of unsafe and collapsed houses. Time to get my survival kit together? =]

Which New Zealand coins are best for hammering?

I live in Auckland, New Zealand. This in itself is awesome, but the only problem is that most Instructables like this or this call for American currency, and I seem to be running out of it. My options are to go to America again, or to find an NZ alternative. Obviously the latter is cheaper, so I was wondering which of our coins to use. Anyone?

Good news for International Authors!

If you don't live in the US, Canada-minus-Quebec, US, UK, Australia, Belgium, Canada (excluding Quebec), China, Colombia, Denmark, Germany, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, or Switzerland, (keep an eye on THIS PAGE for updates) and have been bummed that we can't yet open contests for your country, I've got some great news for you! We're going to give you gifts!  Here's how it works. Editors' Pick gifts Our editors will scan the site for particularly excellent Instructables from international authors.  This way we can tell you we think your project is awesome, even if you don't get a ton of pageviews within the first month.  The number of editors' picks gifts will vary every month, depending on the number of amazing international projects we see. The legal reasoning: while there are all sorts of stringent and varied laws governing contests around the world, the lawyers say we can send you non-contest-related gifts without fear of fines and imprisonment.  Thus, while we're waiting for the lawyers to figure out the wacky legal details for each country, we're identifying the most popular projects each month and sending along a thank-you gift.  Which is a gift, NOT a prize.  Ahem. We desperately want to be able open contests up to the entire world, and are working as fast as we can to make it happen.  (See Eric's post here.)  I realize this isn't the same as being able to enter contests, but this is our attempt to make the wait a bit more pleasant, and let you guys know you're top on our minds.

'Most X on record' climate list?

Does anyone know if there's a list/graph of the 'Most -whatever- on record' for the world, season by season? What I mean is, countries recording their hottest summer, wettest winter, worst drought, etc. I ask because it would give a pretty striking visual for climate change. It seems everywhere I spend any time it's the most something season on record, or at least for 40-50 years. Here's a little list I compiled a couple years ago, from where I'd been: 2002 - summer - New Zealand - worst drought on record          - summer - Western Australia - worst drought on record          - spring - Malaysia - hottest on record          - winter - Ireland - wettest on record          - autumn - Ireland - mildest 2003 - summer - Australia - worst drought          - summer - United Kingdom - hottest summer, hottest day          - summer - New Zealand - highest UV index 2004 - summer - British Columbia - longest          - summer and autumn - British Columbia - worst fire season 2005 - winter and spring - Victoria, Australia- wettest          - summer - Australian east coast - hottest          - summer - Western Australia - coolest Since then it's been worst droughts, floods, cyclones, wettest summers, and now snow. If it hasn't been graphed, it should be.

Anyone know anything about old (60's) guitar amps?

I picked up old a Jansen eight 25. It's in not bad condition, apart from a dodgy tube socket and a missing dial, all of which can be repaired easily. Anyway, I was looking on-line and could not find any data for it other than it's a early 60's amp. Seems to work great. the unit is about 2feet wide and 1.5 feet tall. Made in New Zealand. So I was wondering if anyone could provide me with more data on this, if it is worth anything. If it is not, then it would make a interesting teardown.

Google Earth Flight Simulator

If you download the most recent version of Google Earth and press Ctrl+Alt+A it will open up a flight simulator. You can select from two different planes and take off from several locations including San Francisco, Switzerland, and the Himalayas. You can also start your flight at a specific location if you go there in Google Earth outside of the flight simulator, and then select the "start at current view" button which is above the airport selection box. The controls can be found by going to help and then clicking on keyboard shortcuts. It's a lot of fun and has pretty good resolution. The pics are of the Himalayas. The start-up screen with the options, Switzerland, New Zealand, and upside down over Washington D.C.

Wireless Push to talk button for walkie talkie

Hi all. I would like to build a wireless push to talk switch for use with my comms set up used for airsoft. I would like to be able to put the switch/button onto my rifle (wirelessly) so I can keep hands on when communicating on the radio. Having to take my hand off the rifle to push the talk button is a pain. The only ones I can find online are commercial and quite expensive. What I hope to do is build a simple wireless switch and modify the current PTT swith to be operated by the wireles one. Can anybody advise me how to do this? Circuit diagrams or hints? Open source tracking solar concentrator is go.

Meant to update on this here a while back. For nearly two years now I've been developing the prototype for a solar energy device makeable from scrap and recycled materials, using very basic tools and skills. It's now working, details available here: http://solarflower.blogspot.com/ Facebook group here. This has been possible largely due to the awesome help and support I received through this site. Currently I'm back in New Zealand, preparing the first free workshop on the device's construction and use, taking place the three weekends after Easter at the Tui community, Golden Bay. Then back to Europe for the summer and tour this thing around. Animated tutorials will be available at www.solarflower.org as soon as I find a spare second to do them and finish the website. My God I'm busy.

MEGAUPLOAD.com has been seized by the FBI (and you thought they needed SOPA)...

With all the discussion about SOPA & PIPA, the blackout and the White House pulling their approval of the legislation (as its written only), you would think nothing more would come of this for a while... Wrong! A very popular file host - MegaUpload.com has been canned. If you go to their website you'll see the big FBI "Anti-Piracy Warning" about the fact that they are allegedly involved in: "Conspiracy to Commit Racketeering", "Conspiracy to Commit Copyright Infringement", "Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering" and "Criminal Copyright Infringement" The New Zealand Police have raided several homes and businesses linked to the owner of MegaUpload.com. Its only a matter of time before other similar websites start disappearing. And you thought they needed SOPA to do all this... o_0

FEEDBACK WANTED - Open Source Yacht

G’day Everyone My name is Tom and I am an Industrial Design Student from New Zealand. I am currently working on my Honors project and I need your input! My main research Question is “What is the potential for applying new technologies to traditional yacht construction?” Basically I aim to develop an Open Source Design for a small sail boat that is both affordable and achievable. As a student I love making rather than buying and I really want the maker community and culture to shine through this project. If you have the time I would love to hear from you! What does the maker community mean to you? Where do you make/construct/build? What are your views on sharing design and open source? What access to digital fabrication do you have? (Lasercutting 3D printing etc) What do you look for when choosing what to make next? Have you attempted to build a boat before? How did it go? Would you ever consider making your own boat? What would hold you back? Any feedback or stories in relation to this would be greatly appreciated Free feel to contact me tom_pringle@icloud.com Cheers Tom

Ponoko - personal manufacturing platform

I was lucky enough to have David and Derek from Ponoko over to my house for Thanksgiving (all the way from New Zealand!). Ponoko is a personal manufacturing business, and is something I've been dreaming about for years. You can design a product, have it custom built using precision machines, like laser cutters, and if lots of people like it, they can buy it too. If you don't have access to a laser cutter, this is one of the best ways to see what you can do and try one out. For inspiration, you can check out How to make a laser cut lamp, which I encouraged them to post. It not only shows a cool lamp, but goes through the design process and using Ponoko's service. So, check out their service and tell us what you think. The Ponoko guys are here on Instructables, and would love to hear your feedback.

Can a battery recharge itself? Answered

Hi there, i have a query. In a circuit powering just an LED can the battery power the LED an recharge itself? Or, having a battery power an electric motor connected to electric motor running it in reverse could that generate electricity to run the first electric motor? In my head i have this image in my head that the 2 motors wired together with a LED could power that LED and themselves from the battery connected for a short while then put back in its package? I'm not blessed with access to a reasonably priced electronics store (honestly, its cheaper for me to import the components from America paying postage to New Zealand than purchasing at the nearest store even through online or phone order) Anyway, so i haven't got the patience to wait 2weeks and spend many dollars to experiment myself i wondered if anyone had or knows if this sort of thing works? Thank you Also, could you explain and list what i would need to do this? Thanks again
