Non-solar, non-mains power in the garden?

Looking for advice on low-tech ways of solving a prob, hope someone can help. I really want to create a very small waterfall in my mini-garden, maybe 6” at the most.  I can’t use solar power, as my tiny garden only gets about an hour or so of direct sun around noon (I found out that less then direct sun doesn‘t work; I have a floor-standing 4-bowl cascade that stops the instant a shred of cloud gets in the way). I can’t have mains electricity outside, partly because most of the area is paved and I can’t get the cables safely out of the way; I could get cable around the wall, but it’d have to go round three walls to get it where I need it, and I’m not sure about having the cable overhead. I’ve been searching for some time for some kind of power-pack that I could charge up on the mains, then plug into the feature; I don’t think household batteries would run for very long, I was thinking of something with a bit more punch. Either they don’t make anything like this, or I’ve not yet been able to find the right keywords to track it down; I get untold pages of “solar power” options.  So, basically, people, I’m asking: is there such a thing, or anything that would solve my prob?  I’d have to buy a tiny pump and all the rest of the stuff, but if I can’t power it, what’s the point? Some background: I’m visually impaired, so intricate work is out of the question; I’m not so much low-tech as no-tech; my only power tool is a small cordless drill/screwdriver;  I’m not confident about messing with electricity I live in rented accommodation so I can’t do too much to the structure (ie get the paving lifted and cables put under them, or even running round the walls)

What to do with these old, non-working hard drives?

I have about three old hard drives of 20 GB and 3 GB which failed and stopped working a few years ago and wouldn't spin or one of them makes too much noise and hangs the computer. I was thinking to throw them out now since its been many years, but wondered if anyone could tell me some good and cheap use I can put them to.my friend took the first one, a 1 GB seagate, opened the cover, and kept it in his showcase. It looks good. But I want to do something useful.?

Electroplating Non-Metals

I'm looking for input on the process of electroplating non-metal materials. I have never electroplated before and am open to trying the traditional method or the paint on plate solutions that are available.  I'm just uncertain where/ how to begin and what to buy. The hurdle is that the items I want to plate are not metal to begin with.  One website I read seemed to suggest that painting the object with a paint that contains metal flakes (like Liquid Leaf faux gold leaf, which contains soluble copper) would be enough to get a paintable silver plate to bond. Anyone have experience to weigh in with?  I welcome suggestions for techniques, favorite products, etc.

Non-instructing instructables

I love Instructables, but I have been running into more and more posts which are simply video or still pictures of projects which give no instructions or few useful instructions. I understand that people like to publish their finished projects, and many like to see them, but are they really appropriate as Instructables when there are no instructions? Perhaps it would be good to make an area for people who just want to show off their good work, but aren't prepared to do the step by step explanations to help others duplicate their efforts. I do like to see the different things people make and think they should be included, but I admit a bit offrustration when an interesting project turns out not to have any instructions. Since I am seeing quite a few of these, I suggest the possibility of a display area for any submission without the tool list, bill of materials, and step by step instruction available on screen or as a PDF. Thanks to all!

Obtaining non commercially available parts?

For a lot of projects I find myself needing parts that can't really be bought in a store. My latest project requires transparent conductive ink (http://www.conductivecompounds.com/sitemap/clear-conductive-inks.html). Has anyone had success obtaining parts directly from companies like this? I was thinking emailing the sales rep, saying I'm working on a prototype, and requesting a sample. Do you think that would work? Could someone point me toward a template for an email that would sound "professional"? Also what type of payment do you think they would expect, would just a credit card number be fine? Thank you.

where can I buy non-conductive (or clear coated) ultra fine copper wire?

I'm looking for a very thin, non-conductive, copper wire. Although I've been told this is impossible to find and wicked hard to make, so something clear coated would also be acceptable, but I want an ultra fine gauge. I also want it to be solderable. Anybody know where I can find some?

What could I use to dye my hair that would eventually fade back to its natural color?

I know this is a bit odd, seeing as how most people would prefer the color stay in their hair.  However, I'm only 15, and I don't change my hair color ever 2 months, like many other girls my age.  My mom would prefer if I didn't dye my hair, unless I can come up with a way to do this. Also, I do definitely want it to be safe! Please and thank you. :)

Help on interfacing CAT35C104 Serial EEPROM to my arduino UNO please.? Answered

Hey, I'm still semi new to Arduino, but I can read/write to analog/digital pins and communicate via I2C and SPI with other devices and micro controllers, but those are more widely known and I have here with me a ton of 8 PIN DIP, CAT35C104 Serial EEPROM IC's.. And with all that EEPROM lying around I wanted to put it to some use. But I am still not an expert and don't know how to begin to interface it to my Arduino UNO R3.. :L Specifically it shows: CAT35C104 Serial EEPROM 4kb data storage, 512 x 8 bit registers, 256 x 16 bit Can anyone help me get this to work? I also have trouble with "opcodes" kinda confused.. right now I know the times it takes to read/write, and the clock frequency (1MHz) And the pin diagram.. Any help would be appreciated!!!!!

Is this a manifestation of the proliferation of "upspeak"? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_rising_terminal Perhaps a new rule should be instituted requiring all questions TO BE IN THE FORM OF A QUESTION, not a statement with a question mark after it. Here are some aggravating examples: "My LED matrix isn't working?" "I though I saw a instructable on making a silverware divider out of plastic?" "DIY step up switching regulator?" "Reflective Silk Screening?" "Atx Power Supply?"

Light(ish) and non flexible.

I am toying with the idea of putting together a non flexible notebook case. I really liked the look of my Timbuk2 sleeve and other sleeves out there, but they always leave out adequate support to prevent flex when in a messenger bag. I am pretty sure that being flexed across my back while cycling with a good amount of weight pressing on it killed the motherboard (twice!) on my old notebook and would like to avoid it again. I need some materials suggestions though. I need a non-flexible material to act as plates to be sewn into the outside covering of the case. Ceramic plate would be ideal, but the things that I have found are anti-ballistic and ridiculously expensive. Plate steel would work but it is heavy. Anyone out there with experience with plate steel or aluminum that can tell me how thin I can go without flex, or maybe some advice on materials that I haven't thought of?

Non Milk Cream for allergies

Hello everyone, I have a peanut like allergy to MILK.. and all its parts, all 35 parts, eg. Whey A lot of recipes call for Milk, to make cream like cream of Potato & Corn soup, or creamy mashed potatoes.  There is a vegetable oil based whipping cream that tastes good, but, does not cook at all (I tried) so what can I do to make creamy soups, stews etc, that call for milk, cream etc.? Soya Milk (just a name) , does not churn into butter or cream very well at all. Unless you use the brand called Silk, which is the best for coming close to the milk feel and taste, but it does not become creamy either. Almond Milk as well does not become creamy, so what to do? As a side topic, how about Cheese, what is a good substitute for that? Thanks everyone in advance for at least looking at this topic.

Copperplating with non-pure-copper?

Hi! I plan on some experiments with a modified method i saw here for PCB-plating with copper to make the holes conductive. Now the question: What if my metal is not 100% pure but has some impurities in it? Does it still only "transfer" the copper and leaves the impurities as slag behind? I think it should be this way, since a similar approach gets used in refining metals to a very high purity; but i am unsure... Lets say i do: Follow the basic recipe (with smaller ammounts!) @ http://www.thinktink.com/stack/volumes/voliii/consumbl/cplatmix.htm and use copper sulfide. I think the trick now is that only copper-ions get disolved in the copper sulfide and nothing else. Those ions become plated to the other pole and thus i get purest copper plated to it?

Non-permanent wall paneling?

So I got the idea from this photo: http://ak-images.jackthreads.com/v1/image/969357/size/jt-product_zoom I was thinking how it'd be neat to put some kind of wood paneling like this around my bed, maybe toss some LED strips along the top for an added effect. I'm trying to figure out a way to do this that won't be too expensive nor permanent (I'm renting my place so I need to be able to easily remove it when I leave). My thought was I could get the wood, stain it and then just screw it into the wall along the corners (or maybe even nail it if it's thin enough?) My alone concern with that are the screws/nails will look out of place, unless I'm able to stain them as well? If anyone has any other ideas on making this happen I'd really appreciate the help!

Where can you acquire NON-Galvanized steel pipe?

Mt friends have found plans to build a forge, and we have all the parts to build it EXCEPT for non-galvanized steel pipe. Because the pipe will be heated up, we cannot use galvanized steel pipe as the zinc used in the galvanization process produces deadly fumes when heated up. We have checked stores such as Home Depot, and Lowes, but neither one has what we need. Does anyone know where (and if), we can get non-galvanized steel pipe? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Difficulty leaving comments and responses to comments

Lately it has become increasingly more difficult to respond to someone's comment on one of my Instructables. It has also become more difficult to leave a comment on someone else's Instructable. I click on the appropriate button ("Comment," "Reply"), but there is no response. Sometimes I can comment or respond during some very strange hour of the night when Internet traffic is very low. I have checked this on different computers, but the same problem persists.  Today I also noticed the yellow text boxes have disappeared from one of my earlier Instructables. If I go to "Edit" I can see ghost images of the yellow text boxes, but cannot read or edit them. For some time I have not been able to edit or add text boxes in the Edit mode, only when I am viewing steps of the Instructable.  Are transitions underway on the Instructables page that make these temporary problems? Also, the words "Instructable" and "Instructables" always show up as misspelled. It seems strange the site name is identified by the spell checker as a misspelling.

Chinchilla-safe material for food-bowl

My chinchilla is, for the most part, a jerk. She is adorable, though, so I'll keep her. I can keep up with all of the ways she tries to antagonize me (I've come to the realization that she really is out to get me :P ), except for one. She often pushes her food bowl off of the ledge. I would move it to a lower area in her cage, but, as I came to realize the first time, she poops into the bowl when it's below her. So, I must keep it on this ledge. I therefore need a way to attach and un-attach the bowl to the cage (so I can fill it with food afterwords). I could just go and buy one of these food-bowls,  but I'm too cheap and like to make my own stuff, anyways. So I have two questions - what material would be best for attaching it to the cage, and would hot glue work as an adhesive? I am worried about her gnawing on the stuff, because I know certain things can kill her if she eats them (eg: Paint). Thanks! :)

Can putting a magnet to a "non smart - non android" phone hurt the phone.?

My husband has a Sprint Kyocera flip phone.  It is the kind that has the walkie-talkie function.   He works on the big Caterpillar machines and just sets his phone down next to him.   Last week it vibrated off and was lost in the mud.   I bought in a new one and he lost that one also, but found it.   Oddly these were the first phones he lost in years.   I want to add a magnet to the back of the phone so that when he sets it down it does not vibrate off of the metall?  Will this hurt the phone?
