Weird-o Dream-o

Wow! I've been experiencing a chain of weird, almost scary dreams lately involving instructables...... It was a normal Sunday afternoon, I go to I'bles, and I read my comment tracker. I can actually read the comments I will get later on in the real world. I kept having these dreams for about a week. Meh, Strange stuff..... Do you have weird dreams of your own? if so, post it here! UPDATE!!!! Another very weird dream! It was a normal afternoon. I read comics. Then, suddenly, strangers started saying gibberish. This was repeated for about 6 times, then I wake up. The first thing I realized is now my penis is " modded " by my parents... I screamed because of the intense pain......

Dice-o-Matic

The Dice-o-Matic is "a 7 foot tall, 104 pound, dice-eating monster, capable of generating 1.3 million rolls a day." It was built and is used by the owner of a gaming website, who received too many complaints of insufficient randomness on his previous computer-generated dice-rolling strategies. It is true that computers cannot generate TRULY random numbers... The Dice-o-Matic, however, is exactly as random as an actual dice roll. Because it does actually roll dice! A LOT OF DICE!More info, including an awesome video of it in operation, here.

How to machine an o-ring gland in the corner? Answered

There is a gland in the corner on the right picture (piston o-ring gland, static work). What are disadvantages compared to design on the left? Do I have to machine a rounding in that specific case, when groove is situated next to the wall (marked with red circle) to avoid extrusion? Do I need to machine a clearance above this rounding? Blue arrow simulates constant pressure of 1 MPa (150 psi) only from one side.

What is "instruction 0x593fb06f referenced memory at 0x593fb06f. I/O error status of 0xc000009c" supposed to mean?

My WinXP laptop is giving me hell and I dont know why. I attempt to do almost anything system-wise, explorer crashes and gives me a message that looks a bit like this"instruction 0x593fb06f refrenced memory at 0x593fb06f. I/O error status of 0xc000009c" Some text cant be recognized like the majority of the text on the arduino.cc website, I cant go into the My Computer or C:/ folders without it crashing, and there are probably other things that I havent found yet. I need some help before I do something incredibly stupid to this computer, like playing flaming baseball with it or using it as trebuchet ammunition.

What would be a suitable serial protocol? Answered

I'm currently working on programming a serial interface to put onto I/O devices (number pad, LCD, sensors, secondary microcontroller...) in order to reduce the amount of I/O pins and external connections needed. The only requirements are that it needs to use only two wires (excluding power), and it needs to be bidirectional. Ideally, I'd like to avoid anything that needs too much processing of data before transmission (like adding extra bits to prevent a string of '1's from setting off the error protection). Hopefully, this project will end up as an instructable at some point, so what would be a suitable protocol that would be compatible with common microcontrollers? Thanks in advance.

Bungie Bag O' Swag

Hey guys, So, if you're as big a fan of Halo as me, you'd find that Bungie has a special Bag O' Swag on sale, for their 20th anniversary, and leaving Halo. They have anything from a Tshirt to a Zune to signed games to high-quality figures. There are only 777 in existence. AND I FRIGGEN GOT ONE! OH YEAH! What was the most interesting thing, though, was that people were staying up all day and night, trying to get one, and they didn't come close. I managed to get one by sitting at the computer for TWO AND A HALF HOURS, and my dad's bank account just got billed(also, Amazon, says it's being "processed for shipment") So, did anyone else get one?

Instructables Book

We've published a book of Instructables!Order your copy of The Best of Instructables Volume 1 here!See the latest news about The Best of Instructables Volume 1 here.I just got the contract worked out with O'Reilly Media/MAKE, who is publishing the book. Details are still being finalized, but the book will look something like this: 75 (maybe?) full Instructables and 50 (maybe?) mentions (author, intro image and text maybe?) of Instructables in a community-choice section. The Instructables in the community-choice section will be chosen by a month-long contest open to Instructables published at any point in the past. The top Instructables by votes in the contest will be included. The full Instructables will be chosen by the people at Instructables, the O'Reilly and MAKE editors, and using the results of the book contest. If your project is selected, we'll ask for your permission and give you a free copy of the book. We're hoping to have it out in time for the Austin Maker Faire in October. These details are likely to change, but I'm so excited that I wanted to share them even at this early stage. We'll do a formal announcement when we know more, so consider this your sneak-preview. Updated: Number of full Instructables from 100 to 75. 2008-07-03 Update: Right now, it looks like we'll be including approximately 50 Instructables in the community choice section of the book as chosen by our Instructables Book Contest. This section will have 8-10 Instructables per page and each Instructable will have the author, title, intro text and image. Everyone mentioned will receive a free copy. As usual we'll be eliminating fraudulent votes.75 full Instructables will be included as chosen by editors at Instructables, MAKE, and O'Reilly. Obviously, we'll be watching the results of the contest closely to make sure we didn't miss anything!Since print and internet are such different mediums, part of the selection process is finding Instructables will exceptional images and well-written text. Since any Instructable can be included, now is a great time to make sure your images are top-notch and maybe add a few more, if you can. 2008-09-01 Update: If your Instructable is in the top 50 sorted by user votes, you are definitely in the community choice section. Depending on how many of those 50 are included as full Instructables in the book, the community choice section may include more Instructables. We are working hard at getting everything organized and ready for the book launch in October.

The Etch-o-matic process

I found this website for the etch-o-matic and thought how cool. I also thought that this has to be something really really easy to make myself if I knew a little more about it. So I'm wondering if anyone knows how to build one of these or if there is already an instructable that for this that I just couldn't find, or if someone knows of another source for further info. If anyone even just knows the generic term for this process that would be a help.I'm also wondering about the stencil http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjYio1YZuCA, is there another, more generic product out there that does the same thing? The development is no problem because I have an old blueprint machine that will do that part nicely. thanks a millionC

H and O burning car

The other day a friend and i were disscusing the possibility of riging an old vw beetle engine to run on hydrogen and oxyen separated by electrolosis immediatly befor combustion. heres what weve come up with so far. 1: run a second alternator off of the engine and directly to the gas tank which would be full of water (this would also contain some sugar or some form of electorlite to aid in the conductivity) as you would be burning the H and using the O as you oxidizer it would not be nessesary to worry about which gas is which u would only need one line this line would run to a valve of some sort limiting the flow of the two gasses the carb would then be removed as u are putting O into ur engine so there is no longer any need for it. the line would then be run to the fuel intake where said amount of gas is released (determined by the valve) no here is where we run into what we think might be a problem would the pressure of compression return the gasses to their original state; water? if not then the engine should then run at this point with increased horse power as of the explosive properties of these gasses. (note this is in a nutshell nothing is ever this easy if it was everybody would be doing this) of course as any responsible scientist would do i will tes this on my dads lawnmower first. not really but i do have a test engine my next project is to see if i can get an old snow blower engine to run on black powder if anybody has any ideas on that as well let me know as it is tricky because an engine requires oil but black powder igites dry that is why im going with a 2 cycle so i can try ro run it dry for like 3 seconds and if it works try to figure out how to adapt it to one with oil an maybe eventually my car how cool would that be. it would be like driving a machine gun. not to mention the increased horse power and torque.

Wanted: Jar O' Fireflies

Alright, so me and a friend went to the salvage yard this weekend and came up with mostly bubkis as far as awesome. EXCEPT for a really fun salt/pepper shaker set that looks like cowboy boots, and this nifty shaped light bulb (i'll get pics). it's freakin massive, it's at least a foot long and something like 6-7 inches across and has a really interesting shape. for $2 i couldn't really pass it up. while thinking up things to do with it i remembered the fireflies in a jar ible (https://www.instructables.com/id/Jar-of-Fireflies one of the many). now, i SUCK at electronics and i REALLY suck at soldering so there's almost no chance of me being able to make one of these. any chance someone would be willing to make me one (or if anyone has links to a place where i can by the sucker premade) i'd gladly pay for one.

For emergencies, but not only: make your own o-ring. use a hot glue gun and some soft glue-stick. look for a round object more or less the size of the o-ring you need. form a steady bead of hot glue around it. wait for it to set. peel it off. if necessary: smoothen down the edges somehow (sanding-paper, file, etc). feedback appreciated. thank you.

PINB register on ATtiny45 not working? Answered

I've been programming a pretty simple led driver in Atmel Studio 6 with the attiny45. The idea is that hitting a push button will advance through three different modes of the LEDs, solid, strobe, and fade. When you reach the last mode hitting the button again should reset to the first mode. For some reason the PINB register doesn't seem to be working. Here is the code: #define F_CPU 1000000 #include #include int main(void) { //  Setup PWM TCCR0A |= (1 << COM0A1) | (1 << WGM00) | (1 << WGM01); TCCR0B |= (1 << CS01); DDRB |= (1 << PB0)|(0< PORTB = 0b00010000;   //enable internal pull up int state = 2;  //initialize some variables while(1) {   //int val = PINB3;       if(PINB == 0)   //if button is pressed, increment state variable   {    _delay_ms(100);   //primitive debouncing...     state = state + 1;   }       if(state > 2){  //if we exceed the number of modes, reset state variable       state = 0;   }else   {    state = state;  //probably not necessary, but has solved problems in the past.   } while(state == 0){   //first mode just turns on LEDs at full brightness     OCR0A = 255; } while(state == 1){  //second mode strobes the LEDs     OCR0A = 255;   _delay_ms(35);   OCR0A = 0;   _delay_ms(35); } while(state == 2){    //Third mode fades LEDs      //  Fade LED on    for(i = 0; i < 255; i++)    {     //  Load new value onto OCR0A register to change duty cycle     OCR0A = i;     _delay_ms(5);    }       //  Fade LED off    for(i = 255; i >= 0; i--)    {     OCR0A = i;     _delay_ms(5);    } } } } All of the independent modes work fine, and even the state variable itself is doing what it is supposed to (I know because initializing it to different values gets me the correct mode) but for some reason the PINB register is not getting any kind of response. I am enabling the internal pull up, and then the button connects the I/0 (in this case PB4) to ground which should make the state zero and satisfy the argument of the if statement, but for some reason this is not doing anything. Any ideas? thanks in advanced!

I need to make an air valve, but backwards!?!??! I really need help.?

All air valves I see move into the high pressure resevoir to release the air and then a spring pushes it back shut. Is it possible to have the valve set up opposite of that? In this valve the valve would open away from the high pressure resevoir and the air would escape the same way the valve is going. Traditionally, the valve moves into the high pressure and the air moves out the opposite way. Any information would be excessively helpful and I appreciate it in advance!
