A question of odds

Hello math gurus, here's one for ya. I'm one of the 50 finalists for the Green Science Instructable competition ( yay me - a pleasant surprise to get this far! ) , there are a total of 18 prizes, what are the odds of me winning a prize? If there was just one prize even I could work out that I'd have a one in 50 chance, but I don't know how to figure the complexity of multiple prizes. I'd appreciate an answer, please show your workings :-) Cheers, Bosherston

Odd Chef

There was a chef I saw one TV once who does some original things with food, for instance, he made a pizza that looks like a chocolate cake. He also pureed pancakes into a liquid, and then put them on below zero plates to re-solidify them when serving. But now, I can't figure out how to find him. Any help would be appreciated.

An Odd Walk

Me, my brother, my dad, and my uncle are going to Alaska in my uncle's RV. We stopped at an RV park today that has some trails nearby. They're really just dirt ATV tracks, and I'm not sure how far the RV park people meant for them to go, but I followed them quite a ways (a mile? two miles?) to a recently paved path four or five feet wide. It looked like something fairly major, so I followed it a couple miles. It had benches along it and must have taken a lot of effort to make, so I was surprised that I never saw anyone else on it. Eventually I saw something off behind a hill that looked like well (if that's what you call it) for a uranium mine. As I got closer I saw two sheds, a picnic table, some things that looked like small sandbags hanging from metal frames, something big and wood on the side of hill that vaguely made me think of a catapult without it's throwing arm, and some other stuff I didn't get close enough to describe because a hawk started to look very annoyed with me. I walked back to camp, wondering the whole time what in the world all that stuff was. I never actually saw either end of the paved trail, although I saw that it did continue past all the stuff. I also never saw anyone else on it. ??? What the heck is all that?

What is this odd insect? Answered

This is a very weird looking insect that I found. It looks like it has the stinger and wings of a wasp, but its head and front legs are like a praying mantis. It is about the size of a wasp. Could someone identify this? Sorry if the pictures aren't too good, because it kept crawling away.

Odd Breadboard Question

Hi All I am brand new to hobby electronics and would love one day to be able to create the endless amount of cool Instructables but I have ran into a problem on my first attempt at putting theory into practice and would really appreciate any help. I have made two diagrams / images showing the circuit I made I have attached them to this post. I am using an Arduino Uno as a power source.... I ran a 5v positive from the 5v pin on the Arduino using solid core jumper to the top of the breadboard onto the positive row / rail and a negative / ground jumper to the bottom of the breadboard. In the middle of the breadboard I placed a 1k ohms resistor bridging the gap / grove/ divide and ran the positive feed through it and on to the anode leg of the LED. The cathode leg of the LED was connected to the negative row / rail completing the circuit. All works as it should because of the high resistance from the resistor the LED barely lights and is green as it should be. So without using a multimeter I know and can see the resistor is clearly working. However if I move the resistor so it's still on the same line / row as it was but no longer bridging the gap the LED goes super bright and turns yellow which means that the resistor is no longer working which I can't figure out why because I know there is definitely current flowing through it given the extreme reaction of the LED. I vaguely remember reading somewhere on these forums that Fritzing is not liked very much so I hope no one minds but to help explain what I mean above I have created two diagrams / pictures using Fritzing. The images diagrams shows the resistor "bridging" and working and the other shows it not bridging and therefore not working. So my question would be why given the resistor has current flowing through it does it not work unless it's bridging this middle divide / gap / grove? It makes me think I am missing something really stupid that everyone should know about breadboards but just seems really odd to me. Many Thanks Rab

We recently moved into a duplex and over the last month an odd smell in bedroom that resembles a chemical. Suggestions?

The odor is primarily in the master bedroom and is more noticable now that the windows are closed and furnace is being used. Do not smell it anywhere else in the house. The smell reminds us of what rail-road ties smell like, the creosote specifically. Am worried that it may be something serious and cause more difficulty with my breathing (I suffer from allergy induced asthma) and do not want to have to any issues.

Odd wedding ring materials?

I was thinking about getting a wedding ring in the future and i am not the kind of person who likes to be traditional. My girlfriend is worth everything to me so a ring that would be worth almost as much as her would be a diamond ring made out of osmium, iridium, osmiridium, or platinum. i know that these are all in the platinum family (group) but would any of these make good materials for a ring? i would like an unusual material that possibly has some cool properties (like osmium has a cool blue tint). P.S. i know that osmium when oxidized has a smell and is toxic (and will cause the skin to turn black) i also know that platinum is a "traditional" wedding ring material and therefore can be made into a ring but the others i am unsure about.

Something quite odd happened...

Ok so I had some trouble sleeping the other night, in fact I had an awful lot of trouble and ended up not sleeping for for near enough 48 hours, not unusual for me considering all the stuff happening but read on... I had sprained or stretched almost every muscle in my upper body before this happened and it had been hurting like hoohah just to move, I sit up reading etc for several hours and then descend to start the monrings activities and I noticed that all of a sudden everything has healed, even the massive pain in my shoulder from a fight during which my arm got twisted to almost dislocation... Any theories on why this might have happened, the only thing I can think of is the fact that by being awake and not moving too much it was like sleep as far as healing goes but my metabolism was higher since I wasn't sleeping... Does that sound plausible?

Odd phone battery issue

So I just threw together 3 AA batteries and wired it to a female USB connector. I then plugged my phone in for charging. To my amazement, the battery meter tells me that the charger is DRAINING the battery. It's at 60%, but when I plug the charger in, it drops down to 20 within minutes. It then stays at 20, untill I restart the phone, where it goes up to 60%. The charging light turns on, and the status in the battery page is "Charging", but the battery is going down. I plug it back in, it goes down. It has 4.5 volts now, but before I did that, I had 4 aa batteries with a 5v regulator running, and it did the same thing. Don't blame that though, because it does the SAME thing when plugged into my laptop. This happened before, but I didn't know it. One of my friends had an Energizer portable charger that did the same thing, and I got pissed since i thought he drained my battery. This is a HTC mogul with an OEM battery and OEM cable. I don't know what's going on here, but I think I might just call sprint up and see what they say.

Instructable idea: cat stuff

Okay, so as you can see by the picture, some company has made these brainwave controlled cat ears. Needless to say, they are extremely amusing to see. My idea was to try and add onto that idea with a cat tail. I was thinking of using something to monitor, say, heart rate, and use some sort of microcontroller to run four servos linked through a super-simple spine robot. it would need some sort of secure backplane to support the base of the robot and the servo mechanism, as well as to hold the electronics. Or I guess you could try and make it brain controlled as well, although that would be more difficult. But for heart rate, perhaps as heart rate increased, the tail would start to move and twitch more? I would try and build it, but i have no experience with microcontrollers (or programming) and not enough spare money at this moment. So I am throwing this idea out there too whoever wants to make it (and probably make money on it.) Anyways, have fun.

One of My Stories

I'm usually not one to write but...I don't know I guess I just had an idea for a story that might be good if I continued it. Right now the one below is still being worked on theres some parts that still don't sound right or are missing something. I also really shouldn't say "stories" because truly this is my only one. Anyway, just thought I'd share it. Any ideas for how to take the plot further would be greatly appreciated. Here it goes: My over-active imagination was running away with me again. I've woken up twice in the last hour to something...I can't explain the sound. I just want to sleep until morning and have been doing my best to ignore it, but it just keeps getting louder. Alright, thats it. I shoved off the covers and expertly dodged the piles of clothes that seem to grow bigger over night, to the door. Slowly, I turned the knob. It creaked. I breathed sharply through my teeth hoping nobody heard. Then again, who couldn't hear whatever that racket is? I nudged open the door and slipped into the hallway. It was dark but I wouldn't dare risk turning on the light. Luckily, the big bay window downstairs cast a light over the steps. Jeez, I never knew a house could have so many things that creaked. So I took the stairs two at a time to just cut down on noise. From where I stood, at the base of the stairs, It sounded like the noise was coming from the kitchen, though it was muffled. As I walked into the kitchen, I looked around. Nothing too out of the ordinary. Plates are still stacked up in the sink, waiting to be cleaned. The trash still needs taken out, but what's that sound? Wait, the trash...oops. I don't want that to still be here when Dad wakes up. I was supposed to take it out after dinner, well guess I'll take it out now... I bent down and jerked up the bag. It seemed heavier than normal but I didn't take that into mind. We did have a big dinner that night. I opened the back door to the night. The air was crisp and cool. It was the middle of fall and already it gets to be almost freezing at night. I shivered then walked quickly down the steps and down the sidewalk, careful to not let the bag scrape the ground. Heaving the heavy bag in the trash can, I looked around. It's been awhile since I've been up this late. I'm glad I'm usually not, it's eerie out here. Everything is quiet, there's not a person in sight, the road seems to just go on into the darkness. What makes it especially creepy though is that now that same sound is coming from the trash can in front of me. I just stood and stared. I have to see what it is. What if it is something alive and it needs help? Shakily I reached out and pulled off the lid. It fell to the ground with a loud clang, but I don't care. Now my curiosity was over coming the fear. Slowly, I reached up, untied the bag and looked inside. Then woke up. I reached down and unplugged my blaring alarm clock, not trying to even look for the button that would shut it up. Groggily, sitting up, I remembered the dream. I've been having weird dreams like that. Ever since we moved into our new...well new to us, but still old house. So I tried not to give it much thought. As I lumbered out of bed I could smell the aroma of breakfast come from the kitchen. I was hungry and the smell didn't help me whatsoever. I quickly pulled on a pair of jeans and the shirt I wore yesterday, then rushed out of my room, glancing at the mirror in the hall. Staring back at me was a kid who looked like he hadn't slept in years. My black hair was out in every direction and I had a looked like I was about to fall asleep right then and there. Well, good thing it's a Saturday! I was just starting to turn around to head downstairs when I saw my dad at the bottom of the steps holding a trash bag. "Crud", I said under my breath. I guess my dream was right... Silently I walked down the stairs. He didn't have to say a word. I took the bag out of his hands and headed out back. Lifting up the lid to the trash can I remembered my dream. What was in that bag? I looked around quickly. No one in sight. I undid the strings and looked inside the dark bag. Nothing but trash. Sigh. I almost wished there was something in there. Just to add some excitement to my week. With a dad being an ex-NAVY Sgt. He liked to keep everything on schedule and organized. for him everyday was nearly the same. Me? I'm anything but organized. Him being like that bugged me. I like change once in a while. Not just the same humdrum stuff everyday. But I'm used to it. "Matt?"-I nearly knocked over the trash can. "Are you OK?" My sister was standing beside me with a curious look on her face. I hadn't realized I had my head still in the trash bag for nearly five minutes. "Yeah, I'm fine." She still had that weird look, " Why did you have your head in the trash?" "I...uh...how 'bout you go inside and get some breakfast?" She didn't say anything. She just slowly turned around, still confused. For once she didn't keep asking me. Normally, If she asked something she wouldn't shut up until she got an answer. I shook my head. Why do I always do that? I get thinking about something and then sort of zone off. It's embarrassing sometimes, like just now. "Matt, get in here!" Bah, I did it again. I ran inside. It looked like I missed breakfast. All the plates were put up besides mine. I sighed, and then threw my plate in the microwave. “ Hey, Trash Sniffer!” I turned around , my younger brother Aaron was looking up at me grinning. “ What were you doing in the trash?” “ I was…um…thinking.” “In the trash?” “You won’t leave until you get an answer, will you?” He just stood there, still grinning. “ Fine, I was daydreaming again about a dream I had.” I glanced at him. He now had a more serious look. “ You said you didn’t have those dreams anymore.” Then I realized I shouldn’t have said that. Remembering how when I first told him about the weird dreams and how they about scared him to death. He would wake up every morning worrying about if I had a bad dream. I ended up lying to him that I didn’t have those dreams and that he helped make them go away. Now, I could tell he was already starting to worry. I quickly said, “ No, no, not one of those dreams. It was a nice one and I was just trying to remember it. “Really?” He said glancing up at me. I nodded. “Ok, I just didn’t want you to have bad dreams again.” And with that he turned and walked away. Crazy 6 year olds.

The bernoullivator

So I was chatting away on an 'ible in comments and had an idea... Basically it's a replacement for elevators that works on bernoullis principle, the whole idea is just to make a nicer world for people in tall buildings... The idea is taking an elevator shaft, two massive fans and some people, so you get your two fans and alot of air blowing up the shaft, now on the inside handles are added beside the doors and buttons for opening from the inside of the shaft, the original doors are given rubber seals, to add efficiency and not deafen the people outside. The down one uses a slightly lower flow of air to create a controlled descent speed. The top and bottom floors have handles leading to the doors for those that made a woopsy, and big mesh grids to stop them... This would allow for more people to travel through one shaft than in a single box as noone stops at unneeded floors, also in smaller buildings with large elevator travel, there's the possibility of both better energy efficiency and faster travel between floors, in theory wheelchair users could use it too, I think, they may need to have a mini parachute... It wouldn't be super costly to do when you think of the cost represented by the highly complicated systems used in elevators... Also think jsut how cool everyone who used it would feel, the tech exists in parachute simulators, basically small scale productions of this...

Odd problem with EL Wire... Help?

I’ve been working on this circuit and I can’t quite get it to work right. I wrote out all of my diagnosis in detail, so it’s a bit of a text wall, but perhaps you can just look at the drawings and skim the “odd part” and know what I’m doing wrong. Thanks so much to anybody who can help me out with this. Description: It uses a remote controlled LED controller to turn some EL Wire either on, off, or flashing to music. There is also an override button, to use in case the LED controller stops working. The LED controller requires 12v and outputs the same voltage. I put the diodes in to protect the controller from the 12v that would come across the override button if it was on and the controller output was off. The transistor is a TIP31. The wires going to the override button and to the EL wire are both detachable (using a molex connector). Diagnosis: The override button turns the wire on just fine, but the LED controller does not. When I did a quick test before assembling things by attaching only the controller to the power source and the wire to only the controller, it worked just fine. Additionally, when the override/EL molex is disconnected, I am able to get a +12v reading from my multimeter coming out of the LED controller. When it is connected, however, I am not. The LED controller outputs no voltage, and when I switch the output on, there is often but not always a small blip of voltage. Here’s the odd part: If I turn the controller output on while the override button is on, it DOES output 12v. I can then turn the override button off, and the wire remains lit, the controller continues to output 12v. As soon as I turn the controller off, it will refuse to turn on properly again until the override button is activated (even though I detect 12v going into it). I tried replacing the diode on output 1 with a transistor (generic npn, a BC337 if I remember correctly), and adding an LED between the output and ground. Neither fixed the problem, but I think that I will keep them because the transistor does not have a 1v drop like the diode does, and the LED is an easy way for me to tell whether or not the controller is outputting. One thing I did notice is that the LED did light dimly when the override button was on yet the controller was off.

Other problems I'm having- - When I publish an Instructable, I can't budge the bar to show the expense or level of difficulty - My replies to some of the comments got bunched together under one comment (I noticed someone else had this problem, too, when I read their comments). None of these is a big problem, and I love the site overall, but the search banner is annoying when it covers part of some instructions ;P

What is this tool?

Today, I had a clear out of the workshop (Okay, shed) and found this peculiar tool. It's being lingering around for years now, and I've never been able to figure out exactly what it is and where it came from. The orange thing pushes down and locks, and when it is at the bottom a tiny metal rod appears and dissapears again at the end of the white nozzle. It holds in place until you press the orange button, at which point it fires the orange thing out at a fairly high speed, and it stops when it reaches the end of the blue channel. If you cover over the nozzle, it fires very slowly, so it probably sucks air from there. Does anybody know what this tool is?

arduino code stalls in mid program?

I'm using a rotary encoder, and to test it, I wrote a program with an interrupt on pin two that counts (with a state machine for the direction and two parts per cycle), but whenever I spin the encoder too fast, the program simple stops sending values.  Its running on an uno with a FTDI friend (becaust the serial chip on the board itself is fried), with a 32 cycle per revolution encoder on pins two and seven.  The encoder is standard quadrature, with an optical pickup and slotted disk.  It works fine normally, the problem only occours when it's spun too fast.  I will need it to spin quickly for my application.   I tried closing and reopening serial communications, and it didn't help, I have to reset it to make it work again. here's the code: #define ENCA 2 #define ENCB 7 int r = 0; float pos = 0; void setup(){   Serial.begin(9600);    pinMode(ENCA, INPUT);    pinMode(ENCB, INPUT);    digitalWrite(ENCA, HIGH);    digitalWrite(ENCB, HIGH);      attachInterrupt(0, epos, CHANGE); } void loop(){ delay(1); } void epos(void){   r = 1;   if(digitalRead(2) == HIGH){    if(digitalRead(7) == LOW){      while(r == 1){        delay(0.1);        if(digitalRead(2) == LOW){          r = 0;        } else {          if(digitalRead(7) == HIGH){            pos = pos + 0.015625;            r = 0;          }}}                                     }    else {      while(r == 1){        delay(0.1);        if(digitalRead(2) == LOW){          r = 0;        } else {          if(digitalRead(7) == LOW){            pos = pos - 0.015625;            r = 0;          }}}    }    Serial.println(pos); }else{   r = 1;    if(digitalRead(7) == HIGH){      while(r == 1){        delay(0.1);        if(digitalRead(2) == HIGH){          r = 0;        } else {          if(digitalRead(7) == LOW){            pos = pos + 0.015625;            r = 0;          }}}                                     }    else {      while(r == 1){        delay(0.1);        if(digitalRead(2) == HIGH){          r = 0;        } else {          if(digitalRead(7) == HIGH){            pos = pos - 0.015625;            r = 0;          }}}    }    Serial.println(pos); }}

Hello my question is why dose the glue spin when it is dripped in water? I work for a small plumbing and sewer company and I have noticed that every time the glue drips in a puddle it spins on the surface. It is pretty neat and I was curious as to why it dose that.

EDITED: "Odd things" people buy......recent "acquisition"

Recently I "acquired" a ClearVue device (pictures are mine) which claims to use the AC mains wiring of a house as an antenna to increase reception. What a bunch of malarkey. Oh, I am not saying it doesn't "amplify" the signal using power from the socket is gets plugged into, but that it is ONLY a signal filter. People I have seen that had one of these, bought it with the dreams of using the AC lines in their houses as an additional antenna, AND because it had, what appears to the untrained eye, a dish antenna on the front of it (it is just a piece of plastic adding no true value to the functionality of the device). Some people in marketing make me furious with how they attempt to dupe the public. *sigh* A forum was set up for people that had bought this device new, and some of the responses are scathing....I order the clearvue super booster indor tv antenna, in April 2002. They cashed my check of course but Never sent the product. I called the companyand the office is closed.go HERE for more responses.....The unit, I just noticed, has 2 black wires in it. The oddest thing I have every seen, really. One is hooked to a 5.7 meg resistor, the other end is soldered to the "cable" output. The second black wire is soldered to the AC / CAB switch (CAB side), which then runs to the 2 white wires coming in from the Mains plug - BUT it is not attached to them, but rather coils around them for about 2-3 inches. This wire terminates into the AIR. No connection whatsoever on that ends. And, coming soon to a thread near you, will be the second "antenna booster box" I got in this box lot - dissected.

What is this thing? A counter? A clock? Answered

So I was taking apart something, and found this odd-looking thing I just cant figure out what it is though. I tried looking up a part number, but it doesnt have one, it just says 2222 8403 on the back. It has 6 pins, and a dial on the front that can turn from 0 - 9. And sorry about the camera, its not a very good one.
