operating systems

Does anyone know of some other open source operating systems other than Ubuntu and Linux? because I'm getting quite pissed off at windows 2000. EDIT: there is some confusion about what I meant. I meant that Linux is the only OS that I know about. I didn't mean that I had ruled out Linux, I like Linux, I was just wondering about what other OS were out there.

I don't trust Windows anymore after what happened. Thank you.

Operation Immortality

Operation Immortality is a project to collect and archive the very best of what humanity is and has accomplished. On October 12, 2008, Richard Garriott, famed video game designer and the first second generation American astronaut, will take digitized DNA and human accomplishments with him to store in outer space when he journeys to the International Space Station. The archive will include information on humanity's greatest achievements, messages from people all over the world, and DNA samples from some of our brightest minds and most accomplished athletes. During the month of September, every human being is invited to come to the OperationImmortality.com website to submit their suggestions for our greatest achievements and leave a message for the cosmos. A lucky few may also be selected to add their DNA to the mix and join Richard Garriott as he rockets out of the atmosphere. With the LHC ready to do its thing, I think this organization has surfaced at the right time, save the earth, before we might all die.To def.LINK

operational amplifier

I need someone that can tell me what an operational amplifier is. ive been googling these shenanigans for the better part of a day and cant seem to find anything other than technical diagrams. i just want to know, generally, what they do, what theyre used for, and where i would find one inside something in my house. im actually really pissed off right now, every page ive read tells me how important they are, and exactly how they work, and that they are used "in a wide variety of electronics", and that they have "nearly infinite uses" but no one seems to say "hey, here's where you might be able to find one, and here's what it will be doing" anyone got any answers to this. and so help me god, if i see any schematics posted with that little triangle that ive been staring at all day, i might set someones house on fire. (not mine, of course....but someones.....)

Is a laser operated button pusher possible?

We have a business convention coming up soon. Inside of our display case we have this grid of LED panels. The goal of the display is you try and hit a button outside of the case when a certain LED panel is lit To demonstrate human vs. computing reflexes. I'd like to have some kind of external build to demonstrate with as the "vs.". I am thinking I can use a laser and point it at the LED block because lasers are capable of transferring data. I would think it wouldn't be too difficult to make a build that distinguishes between on & off. It's basic binary, on & off 1 & 0, true & false, same & changed. When the surface lights that the laser is pointed on, I think the easiest way to push the button would be to discharge a capacitor into a hobby motor, and some kind of tab or something on the motor. I can go into more detail on the build, but I need more info on making a laser operated trigger system thingy.

What is the best operating system? I have come to the conclusion that most, if not all Windows based operating systems (including Windows 98, 2000, XP, and definitely Vista) suck. Which one is the best, fastest, or safest?

Coin operated PS2?

I want to create a PS2 (slim) based fee paying game room for kids, but I want to make it coin operated. I want to use a MOSFET transister switch like this one http://brunningsoftware.co.uk/FET.htm which also doubles as a timer. The coin handling mechanism is the easy part, so dont bother about that.My problem is where to connect the MOSFETswitch in the PS2 console. My first idea was to connect one switch to each of the controllers ( to enable/ disable the controller's power supply on pin 5) but I understand the controller port is part of the PS2 motherboard and new electronic components cant be fitted there (true or false?). If true where else can I fix the switch in such a way that when a game is finished a new game cant be started without feeding in a coin?Any Ideas?

Operational Amplifier not working? Answered

Hello, I'm trying to use the KA324 IC (which consists of four opamps) for amplifying an audio signal. I've tried almost every schematic from this website: http://sound.westhost.com/dwopa.htm and also from lots of other websites, but none of them work. If the output volume is Really low, the sound is pretty good, but very quiet. When I turn up the volume, the sound is really bad, I almost can't recognise the song I'm playing. The output volume is also not that really high. If I keep increasing the input voltage, the output stops increasing after a while. It's not really 'loud' at that moment too. I've connected the IC to 12V DC (between the two middle pins). The + input goes to the ground connection, the - input goes to my POT voltage divider of the input voltage. The output pin goes straight to the speaker. I also added a 100kOhm resistor between output and - input. Without that resistor, I hear nothing at all but I think that's normal. I've also tried the three other op-amps from that IC but no luck. Is this opamp just not ment for audio amplification? or am I doing something wrong? Greetings, Electorials

Looking to pay someone to build one for me immediately. I am very serious about this. I have seen others who have built such a device, but none worthy for sale as of yet. I wouldn't be past investing in marketing of such a device if something working comes of this. Jimmy

Battery operated led with 6 hour run time per day.

Trying to figure out how to make a circuit for a LED light that is run by two AA or two C batteries. I would like the light when turned on to run for 6 hours and then turn off. Then autmatically turn on the same time each day and run for 6 hours without having to manually reset the light. Having a hard time trying to figure out how to make this timer. It would also be a bonus if the the led flickered like a candle. Thanks for any help in the right direction.

I am in need of a rechargable battery operated industrial sewing machine motor. I would like to be able to switch from the battery to AC power when needed. Use battery when in the field and AC back at the shop. Typical sewing machine motor is: 2 poles, 130 cycles 50/60, 1.0 amps, 90 watts. It would be great if the battery would last 1.25-1.50 hours per charge and be removable to install a fresh battery and be charging the spent one. Thanks.

Operating a transformer at half the voltage? Answered

What could be the effects of the output when operating a transformer at half its rated voltage, specifically to the amperage? as two examples: If I had a transformer rated for an input of 240v and an output of 20A at 24v and I was to supply the primary with 120v, what would happen to the output? If I had a variac (autotransformer, variable transformer, ect.) and it was rated for an input of 240v with an output of 0-260v at 11A, what would happen to the output ratings at only 120v?

I can get more if need be, but I can't blow too much on it.

Need to operate a timer with a remote

I have a 6 Volt radio frequency remote control pair and a separate board with a 5 to 12 Volt timer circuit that turns power off to a load after 1 to 300 seconds. The timer circuit uses capacitors and resistors including a variable resistor plus a 555 too plus jumpers from Amazon.com to see a picture,it lists as: GEREE Timer Relay Switch 1-300 second 5V 9V 12v DC input TIME OVER RESET Delay. Will it work if I connect the RFRC to power and then from there wire to the timer and then wire the timer to my load so that I can remotely make the timer circuit  operate my load for the set time? I ask so as not to burn a thing that takes weeks to get. Will the 1 channel remote control receiver's single relay reset back into a NO condition from NC after current stops flowing from the battery power and through he remote control's 5 pin relay into the capacitor(s) of the timer circuit, that is to say, will the remote relay reset to NO after the timer's single relay goes back from NC to NO after the capacitor(s) run out of charge? As a note, I have had very little success finding a remote controlled timer in the 6 Volt range. 12 Volt remotes with timers are easier to find but that is too much power, size and expense for my application. Know of a supplier? If I have enough of this correct to make sense then any wisdom in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Vince

Need to make very loooong lasting battery operated Mini LED light for backlit painting

For some of you brainiacs Im sure this will seem like an incredibly easy project but for me, Not my area do expertise in the least. I need to make a simple machine for part of an art project. I need to have two small LED lights placed one each on the tip of two  clock hands . I need the lit clock hands to be battery operated ( looong as possible) and flattish ( maybe an inch in depth at most for entire piece) so it can hide behind a painting. Would like it to  operate lit up and moving in clockwise circle nonstop day and night for at least a year . Any ideas?  What # volt? How to make simple clock ( besides just buying a kit? It only needs a very long hour hand with bulbs on each end ( say 12 oclock and 6 oclock) Where to get small ( 1/8 to 1/4" diameter)  long lasting LED bulbs? As I said before, I am an absolute amateur here!  Thank you. Maggie
