Cinderblock - To paint or not to paint

I always had this question in my mind.  Was the cinderblock designed to breathe?  In other words do we want the moisture to go from one side to the other in case of cinderblock walls (say in the basement walls?)  Logically, I would think that the answer is that we want to prevent the moisture to go from one side to the other.  If that is the case, why the cinderblock makers do not make waterproof cinderblocks by adding water proofing chemicals during the manufacturing process? I would greatly appreciate your insights on this subject.

Spray Paint

I've taken a small school desk and I'm trying to fix it up a bit. The table top is made of wood, but is overlaid with a thick piece of laminate. I've sanded the surface to take out the texture and markings.  I would like to give the laminate it a new paint job, but don't really know what kind of spray paint I should use. Ideas? Suggestions? I could sit here and look it up on Google, but I thought I'd try making a forum and see how it goes.

Paint a Bike? Answered

How do you do a good paint job on your bike? What paint do I get? should I sand it down or Just put primer on it?

Painting Wood

I've got some wood that I'd like to paint over, but it's currently got a fair bit of paint on it. The current paint is in fairly good shape and is just a little dirty. The problem is that the paint doesn't run all the way to the edges of the wood and cuts short about 3 cm from the edge of the wood. The paint is also peeling towards the edges. The reverse side of the wood has a few crevices running along it(kind of looks like a turtle shell) as well as a few peg holes. My plan is to sand the front all over and try and smooth the edges of the paint where the paint is peeling. For the other side, I'm going to fill in the crevices and holes with wood putty and then sand over as well. Afterwords, I'll probably apply some dual paint/primer spray paint on top to give it a smooth finish. Now, I have a few questions: 1. Will the peeling edges be a problem when I paint over the wood? 2. Since the crevices are fairly shallow and smooth out pretty easily, will wood putty be a good choice for filling them? 3. Any problems with using a dual paint/primer? Or would it be better to use a separate primer and then paint? I've never really painted anything, and this is pretty much the first real craft project I'm working on, so any advice would be great. If you think it might be a better idea to remove the paint, any ideas you have on how to do it would be great too. I've attached some pictures from various angles. You can probably guess what I'm going to be making :). Thanks.

Painting Aluminium

I'm painting some 1/16" plates of aluminium black. I gave them a wipe down, and used some generic primer and black spray paint. (I originally started off with a paint gun, but it broke). As the plate dries, it starts to crackle in some areas, but not all over. Any ideas what is going on? I've never had this problem painting steel, or wood. Do I need a different type of primer, specifically for aluminium?

Spray Paint Drying

I'm hoping someone here knows something about spray paint. Specifically why some spray paints seem to take forever and a day to dry. In the attached picture the paint on the left (Metallic) dried quickly, within about 45 minutes whereas the paint on the right (Gloss Protective Enamel) is still so wet at 24 hours that I can scratch it with my thumb nail. FYI, I used both paints, one right after the other, on the same kind of metal. So if someone could let me know why some paints dry slower than others and which kind of paints to avoid if I'm in any sort or a rush I would be most appreciative. Thanks

painting a lawn flamingo

I am trying to bring back the pink quality of several Yard flamingos.  I know I could buy new ones, but certain people would rather keep for sentimental reasons, so I am trying to restore them.  My problem is when they are painted, after a period of time it chips off, I believe it is because the paint cannot deal with the flamingo plastic swell and shrink of the heat of the day and the coolness of the night.  Any ideas to extend the paint's life, would be appreciated.

spray paint shoes

I needed to change the colour of a pair of synthetic upper boots for a costume party, and this what I did. Firstly, I used spray paint. Even though I had sanded the surface, the paint would not adhere. In desparation I then used cheap acyrlic paint. Did the job superbly. The only problem is that acyrlic paint dries flat (no shine) but luckily my DH had Gloss Medium in paint box.

Painting My Room

Well my mom decided that she would give me permission to paint my room how I wanted. I had an idea of like... a silhouette of a NYC skyline (or any skyline) in black around the walls that goes about 3 or 4 feet up. Then above that would be like... a bluish color. Then in the top corner above my bed, a Orange circle sun were the vertex of the ceiling and 2 walls would be the center of the circle. So first I need to find a silhouette, preferribly just black buildings, kinda like this, but less complicated. Something easily taped off.link to pictureAlso, I want you suggestions on the paint colors. I'm pretty set on black for the buildings but I'm not sure about the sky/sun.Comments/Suggestions/Concerns/Help

Painting metal; steampunk

Hey guys, I've never really done any crafts so im not sure how to go about doing this so i figured id bring it up here. I know i'm 8 months early but I wanted to get started now, on a project for halloween. I randomly decided a few weeks ago i was visited by never good "good idea fairy" and i listened when i was told to by a unicycle by my awesome mind. Then I started riding it, realizing that i could probably get pretty decent at it pretty quickly. Then someone talked about halloween and I was thinking about what would be off the wall so i immediately though of the unicycle. Here, my mind went to steampunk, then it went to looking like abe lincoln while riding a unicycle. Then I realized that my boring chrome painted unicycle would hardly look Victorian, and that it would need a facelift. LONG STORY SHORT: My issue is that I would like to spray paint it a brassy colour, and not ruin the unicycle. I just got back from the craft store, where they told me that my idea of wrapping saran wrap tightly around it would not work because the paint would just run off. They suggested wrapping canvas around it, but when they showed me the cost of canvas i let out a faint hearted laugh and said what if i were to wrap it in a paper or construction paper type  material and paint that, but they turned that down because of the appearance it would give.  But again, it is halloween and it wont be all that light out so I dont really see a huge requirement for detail. Is there any way you guys could think of that will not ruin the unicycle?

Painting an inflatable boat. Answered

Hi folks. I have been given a Gladding Float-Pac inflatable dinghy that has been left out in the weather a bit too long & the surface of both the orange & green rubber has become stained from fallen leaves. I have had a look around the interweb & have found a couple of paints suitable for inflatables but to tell the truth they are a bit expensive just to smarten up a boat that will seldom get used particularly as I would have to buy two colours. The boat is in otherwise good condition with no holes or punctures & there is no scuffing or fabric showing through so finishes like Tuff-coat wold be a bit over the top. Does anybody have any suggestion for a pait that would be flexible enough for the job, i'm not really too worried about the colours although the original green & orange would be nice to keep. Thanks in advance for your suggestions folks.

Bubbly spray paint?

I was painting my Nerf gun using Rustoleum spray paint. All went well and I let it dry for a week (yes, it says 1 hour but I was too busy for a week). Then I decided to put a Matte Clear Coat from Rustoleum and the paint started bubbling up. The clear coat did not bubble but the other paints did! And what's weird is that it only bubbled in certain areas. What happened and what's the solution?
