Paper Mache

Hey i want to make a mask with my son of paper mache. Now i read somewhere that some wallpaper glues are bad because they cause rashes on the face. I bought one from Bison (becasue it was the only one they had) but how can i find out if this is a good one or not without giving my 4 year old a itching face?

What's the difference between paper mache and paper clay?

I want to try making my own paper clay or paper mache for sculpting projects (like lightweight small pumpkin people for Halloween), but various instructables use one term or the other. Is there a difference, and if so, what kinds of projects would you recommend using each product for? Thanks.

Kind of Paper used for Paper Mache

Not a silly question. What kind of paper do you use in items made out of Paper Mache? the instructions I have call for strips torn from old newspapers but when my local newspaper went out of business that kind of killed the supplier for this kind of craft. papers are different so the results wont be the same as with newspaper. Thought making paper mache models would be a great and kind of cheap way to try out some ideas.

I need to know how to make a dash board like in a papermache way so I can make a mold. cheap to nearly free is preferred

I have the rare opportunity to create a new interior for an aging kit car. I know what I need to do. I have the design, but little to no money. How can I create say the dash, and center console? Im looking to eventually make a mold of this so it can be replicated. I was thinking of eventually using glass resin body filler as a final fascia to provide an eventually super smooth surface once the carving and modifying is complete. Im talking to a master molds man in a few days, but could use some ideas for a construction materials to start with. So I can get to the point of making a mold for it, and start replicating my construction. Any ideas?

Starburst Paper Mache. Help!

So I'm planing on covering a wooden Kleenex box with Starburst wrappers. However I'm not sure what type of liquid adhesive I should use. Is a glue/water mixture good enough? Is there anything on the market that I should use? Any homemade concoctions that would do the job? Any recommendations on how to give it a gloss finish? I'd appreciate any input you have as to what I should use. Thanks.

Making Paper Mache Waterproof

I want to make paper mache garden pots, if possible, so it would be paper/flour and need to be covered in something that would not ruin the artwork/shape. I have not tried any sealants out yet, thought I would ask and see if anyone has experience with this or something similar. I have looked up some Kryolan products, but am unfamiliar with what these sealants and stuff even do. Like what is epoxy or resin? Please help me out, thanks!

I need some help with paper mache angry birds for a party game

For my daughter's b-day I want to make an Angry Bird game out of small pinatas. I've never actually played the game myself (prob the only person in the world who hasn't) because I don't hove time. But I thought it would be fun if I could make small birds and pigs out of paper maché, about 7 inches in diameter. Then I want to make a catapult, and hang the birds from strings from the ceiling, and have the kids shoot the pigs at them. How's that sound? First of all, is that how the game is played--pigs hit birds? Or is it vice versa? And I need the pig pinatas to be durable enough to shoot without collapsping in the catapult, and hard enough to break the birds. I want to put candy in all of them, and have quite a few on hand so all the kids can get a shot. I made a cool catepillar pinata a couple years ago for her but the kids couldn't break it because I made it too thick -__- So, I need some help with my "recipe"... Thanks

has anyone tried to create a real car body out of paper mache?

How would the shell hold up to aerodynamic and general usage pressures? What kind of cost figures would there be? Are there any government grants available to address this idea? I figure once painted and sealed there wouldn't be any problems with weather. I can only imagine that the overall result is a lighter car, improving gas mileage. Additionally, any modifications to the shell would be a lot easier.

Carmen Miranda Hat

I am attempting to be Carmen Miranda for Halloween, and there is surprisingly very little on the inter-webs on how to make a Carmen Miranda hat.  I am thinking about trying to paper mache a base, something that resembles a witch hat, from which I can glue/wire fruit on it, and wrap a scarf around the base. But I am worried that this will be too flimsy and/or not stay on my head. Can anyone think of a good base that I could potentially buy from a craft store, or Halloween store? I was thinking a Dunce hat, but I think that could be too high.  Any feedback would be appreciated.  Thanks, M PS. Ebony & Ivory - Devil May Cry Guns

This was my first commissioned prop build as a favour for a friend of a friend. All in all they cost about £15 in materials and took a total of 42 hours to conceive and build (abit longer that expected).  It was made on the base of a cheap toy gun which had to be modified and was then built upon with wood, paper mache, plastic and MDF. There are further step by step photos on my props blog.  I hope you like them.

Giant Gourd Case?

I like watching Naruto and one of probably everyone's favorite characters is Gaara. Gaara carries around a giant gourd on his back and I figured, why can't I? I thought about making a snowman out of beach balls as a mold and covering it with paper mache. Using that as a base I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to harden and waterproof the case. I thought about layering fiber glass or using plaster, but I'm not sure how heavy it would be. I also planned on making compartments, one on top for general storage and one on bottom with interchangeable parts like a speaker and a drink container with a tap. Eagerly open to suggestions. : )

is there any way to harden floral foam? Answered

I am making some molds and stuff from floral foam, and I wan't to know if there is a way to harden it and make it heavy.  Some of the things I'm making will have to take handling and painting without chipping, breaking, or crushing.  I use floral foam because it's easy to use, so I can make models in the first place.  I'm not looking for another medium, but how to change it once the model is made.  Also, I cannot use anything expensive or that must be bought online.  Preferrably something like paper-mache, but that will not stick out from small crevices in the model.

Is there a relatively safe alternative to vinegar and baking soda for chemical reaction volcanoes? Answered

My brother is working on a paper mache volcano experiment for school, and I figured that the instructables community has come up with something a little more creative than just vinegar and baking soda. When I say relatively safe I mean something that doesn't emit poisonous gasses or toxic waste.  Thanks for any help. Update: I'm not worried about the safety of vinegar and baking soda, I added a safety request because I was almost very stupid mixing chemicals without checking about results. I almost created a gas used to exterminate people. There is no need to lecture me on how stupid this was, I already know.

How Do I make an Alien arm like wikus's in District-9 in time for haloween?

I wanted to see district-9 since May when I saw one of the super creepy propaganda flavored commercials and became rabid with curiosity. I tried to sneak in (twice!). I finally saw it today. I loved it. Now, my heart is set on making an alien arm like Wikus's for Halloween. If I had seen the movie earlier, I would probably build the whole alien costume, but as things are I am a little short on time. I'll have to go for the genetic-recombinant-halfway-through-transformation look. I won't be going as Wikus specifically(I am female, so that wouldn't work anyway), so the arm & claw have to be all the more recognizable as district-9 alien stuff.  (I suppose I could bring a can of cat food along, but that feels like a badly contrived substitute for doing things right.). There are no reference pictures for me or anybody; because of  sony's secretive media campaign there are hardly any pictured of the aliens to be found, and I have yet to find one of Wikus in which his arm is visible. My dad says I should use paper-mache to make the thing, but I've had bad luck with the stuff in the past. I was thinking of using plastic on foam base, but that seems rather inefficient. the only other option that comes to mind is plaster, but I would have to make all the molds myself which would be quite a pain. any suggestions? I sure could use some.

It's alive! Alive!

I've been wanting to build a Stargate helmet for a very long time but there was no way I could spend the cash to sculpt one in clay and do a fiberglass casting in a silicone mold so I had to improvise by using cardstock, paper mache and foam. I really wasn't going for screen accuracy as this is intended to be a costume helmet instead of an accurate replica. When I set out to build this I wanted it to be light weight, low cost and most importantly I wanted it to move. I still have quite a bit of work left to do- I still need to add the glowing eyes and do some filling, sanding and detail work plus paint. Watching it move for the first time was just awesome. :) <br>

Giant Hanging Light Bulb Lamp

I'm wanting to create a giant hanging light bulb lamp, similar to the ones I've uploaded, but I'm not really sure how I would go about doing it. I think I would make it out of plastic. So I would need to create a mold and then make two halves on a vacuum form, but I have no experience doing that. I'm not sure how I would make a mold of a giant light bulb, what materials to use and how to make it. I had thought about maybe cutting something out on a lathe but I don't have a lathe and it seems like it would have to be pretty big. I also thought about paper mache but I was afraid it might be too bumpy and light bulbs are smooth. Also once I have created the vacuum form plastic halves how I would attach them together with out having a large seam show.
