Where can I buy a quality pasta machine? Answered

I love homemade pasta, but I don't have a pasta machine and it's a pain in the butt to cut it by hand. So does anyone know where to get a quality pasta machine? I don't know what to look for to determine the quality, so if anyone could help, that would be great.

Pinouts!

Hey Instructabl-ERS! I got this swank old SwiMP3 player, meant to blast rockin tunes straight into your skull via bone conduction, and I'm growing flippers in sweaty anticipation of tuning in, turning on, diving in, and rocking out. BUT. it has this wonky old pinout, and their customer service hasn't gotten back to me yet to tell me how to swiftly solder up a new one. And I wanna load my tunes and charge the internal batteries and stuff. So I pose this question to YOU, instructables! Do you have one of these with a cable I can copy? Do you have one of these and know what the pinout is? electrically yours! --Star

What are your favorite ingredients for noodle/pasta dishes?

What are your favorite cold and hot noodle dishes? What ingredients are must-haves when you make pasta? I'm mildly obsessed with hot pasta dishes, and cold pasta salad. I'm hoping to try some new ideas. If I draft a recipe from your idea, I'll be sure to cite you as an inspiration source when I post. Some of my current faves: -feta, basil, roasted peppers -chicken, feta, cilantro, white beans, basil -goat cheese and cilantro pesto

Extrusion plate in CAD

I have an idea that requires either machining abilities/tool access or CAD experience. A while ago, I found out something that was apparently common knowledge. Meat grinders with their blades removed can be used to extrude spaghetti. So I decided to look for additional pasta extruder plates for different noodles. There are no pasta extruder plates for standard meat grinders. You can, however, buy a glorified grinder and accessory plates or a dedicated pasta machine for top dollar. The marketted pasta makers at their very cores are the same as the meat grinders with the right plates installed. Obviously pasta dies/plates for meat grinders are intentionally not produced. The closest I could come was a garage sale extruder that looks like a plastic grinder with three dies. Big surprise, it doesnt work. But I modified a plate so it sort of works for a grinder. This worked as proof of concept. Would anyone be interested in helping to design CAD files to print pasta dies on Shapeways based on proper pasta dies? I don't know much about CAD, but it looks easier than the designs created by some folks on here. Basically disks with a dimple for alignment and specially shaped holes. admittedly, the hole depths would be the complicated part. Let me know what you think.

Food Creator and dispensor

This project is currently in the research stage. Having been reading the books 'Zero to Maker' by David Lang (OpenROV) and 'The Toaster Project' by Thomas Thwaites I have realised what I need is a project with a goal to take me out of the Arduino blinky light and solder kit zone, in to real making/hacking. Lang suggests an 'Unknown Project' which as I understand it is one that has been unexplored or under-explored, and he also suggests that using a popular forum to log, share and discus ideas would help the process along. So my idea, is an open hardware food creating machine, that will produce a large array of food, from a limited array of ingredients (approx 50) that can be made easily, and a ingredient markup language. 3d food printers in current development are either impractical or unappealing to me. They range from candy makers, ones that still need to be hand finished and cooked or the one publicised for receiving NASA funding recently used dead bugs. They seem all to focus on the gimmick, and not the food, and I like food. The other approach is the barbots, which seem to mostly perform flawlessly, but are unable to produce food. So my approach is to work through the process logically and break it down to sub projects. Design meals by hand using the limited ingredients for proof of concept, choose the ingredients to provide the widest possible range of nutrients and transpose the recipies to psudocode that can be easilly transformed in to a markup language later. Design a process for mixing and cooking ingredients. I envision a system of different food processors, steamers, boilers etc. and a range of extruding dies. Design a self cleaning system. Possibly ultrasonic or ionic. To that end, here is my preliminary list of ingredients. sugar, salt, oil, water, co2,Alcohol 37.5%,pectin,bicarb,nutritional yeast coffee, tea, mint, cocoa, garlic, oregano, chilli powder, paprika rice, soya, corn, wheat lemon extract, orange extract, tomato powder, dried apple, dried carrots, dried peas, potato powder. These ingredients can be used to make among other things, sausages, burgers, curry's, pasta, fries, soups, cereals, 'cider', cocktails, deserts, sodas, sauces, egg cheese and milk substitutes. So that's my plan. What do you guy think, and what ingredients would you add and why? And what would you call it? There are loads of things I left out as everything will change as I work through the process. Thanks for reading, Haydn

Has anyone hacked a bread machine controller circuit?

I've got an old Breadman (TR333) bread machine and it's still chugging along.  The newer models have more useful programs (like Jam and Pasta) but have horrible flimsy baking pans.  What I'd like to do is reprogram my old solid bread machine to do these new programs.  I've seen the hacks to roast coffee in the bread machines but I don't think they mess with the controller circuit.  I think they just re-wire them to mix constantly and point a heat gun at the beans.

Pokemon Lavender town. UPDATED

Lavender town is probably the most creepy place in Pokémon games. In 1996 Red and Blue, suicide in children supposidly spiked. So (spupidly) I decided to listen to the Lavender town music with headphones on. I now have a splitting headache and feel ill. I do not belive in most of the ''creepy pasta's'' on the internet but the headache thing is real. Listen to the music at your own risk. The images belong to me.

Call for Mac & Cheese Recipes!

Homeroom is a specialty Mac & Cheese restaurant opening soon in Oakland.  Even better, they're running a mac and cheese recipe challenge!  You don't have to be local to enter (or win), and the best recipes will be included in their upcoming cookbook.  I suggest posting your mac'n'cheese Instructable, then sending along the link as your entry - we'd like to see what you've made, too! Details from the Homeroom website: The winning dish will be selected from a group of 10 finalists, who will be invited to show off their mac and cheese at cook-off party held right here in Oakland. But don’t worry out-of-towners, if we choose your recipe one of us will cook it up for you. But there’s a catch. For your recipe to qualify for the grand prize or for a spot in the cookbook, you must follow a few simple rules: * You must use only California cheeses in your mac and cheese. * All recipes must be based on 1 pound of dried pasta. * The retail cost of all your ingredients must equal or be less than $20. This includes pasta, milk, butter, flour, cheeses and whichever veggies or meats you decide to include. * Email your entries topmac@homeroom510.com no later October 15, 2010. Roller machine to create pressure on and pull through ribbons of bark/fiber, similar to a pasta maker--ideas NEEDED.

I'm working on a project in Nepal to remove the bark from the fiber growing in the stalk of a wild plant (bast fiber). The "bark ribbons" are stripped off the plant, with the fiber adhering to the inner side of the bark. The plant grows back so it's all very environmentally sustainable. We soak the long (1-2meters) bark ribbons for 24-48 hours and then, if beaten, can break the "glue" (pectin) that's holding the bark and fiber together. We've run them through an industrial  roller system and it worked very well, without damaging the fiber the way beating does. A local machine shop wants to build an expensive, heavy duty, roller system and we'll go for this eventually. However, in the meantime, we'd like to build a smaller, simpler machine, maybe a table top one rather than free-standing. We can hand crank it, or use a bicycle mechanism. We need to be able to adjust the pressure--the distance between the two rollers--to make sure we are breaking the pectin bond between the two materials, fiber and bark. We have access to steel pipe, PVC, cast iron makers, gears, etc. If anyone can help me with plans I'd really appreciate it, as would many impoverished Nepalis. I've included photos of the industrial machine (the first 6) we tried and will eventually make, as well as a pasta maker and one other machine. The industrial machine had three rollers but they removed the outlying one, not above/below another, as it didn't work as intended. Thanks so much in advance to all you wonderfully creative Instructable-ers. Shanti Mama

Do you cook mostly or all vegetarian food? What are your tips for staying balanced?

Was anyone else raised eating meat, then switched to mostly or all vegetarian cooking? Any tips for how to shop, filling meals, and how to avoid eating too much starch and sugar (pasta & fruit)? I'm thinking about limiting how much meat I eat, but I'm curious how to switch out of a meat-and-potatoes model I'm accustomed to from childhood. I love a good salad, have an enthusiastic passion for bean dishes, and have access to good vegetables. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Want collaborators for a solar hot water project

I have had this idea for a while and I decided to try and make it a collaboration instead of just trying to do it by myself. I thought there was a way to start a collaborative instructable, but I don't see that option now. Does anyone out there know how to do a collaborative instructable? Maybe that option appears right before you publish it? I don't know if the best way to share ideas is this forum, or the collaborative instructable (if it exists). ******** Here is the idea: I have a solar box cooker, which is shown in this instructable. On days when I have nothing to cook, I often put a kettle of water in it, so when I get home from work I have very hot water that can be used for cooking pasta, making  tea, coffee etc. I pour that water into a thermos, and it will stay hot until the next day. I would like to design and build a solar cooker that is dedicated to this task with this tentative list of requirements: *It would be fairly small, just large enough to hold a kettle *It would be easy to put the kettle in and take it out *It would be weatherproof, so it could sit outside for months at a time *It would be designed in such a way that it would collect energy from the Sun during a large portion of the day, without need of any sun-tracking mechanism *Ideally, it would have a mechanism that would transfer the water to a thermos as soon as it boiled, or got to a certain temperature. Looking forward to hearing from people who want to collaborate on this. As soon as we have decided on where to share ideas, I'll post mine.

Creative Electrician or Consultant Wanted for Short-Term Project (Good money.)

I'm the owner of a 3-story commercial building in New York City. I basically have 2 tenants: One using the ground floor and basement, the other using the 2nd and 3rd floors. I am trying to sub-meter the electrical use of each tenant so they can pay for their own usage (and have an incentive to conserve). For the last several months I have been interviewing licensed electricians. Apparently, though there are two separate fuse boxes (It's an old building.) they each have both upstairs and downstairs circuits mixed up in them. This, I have been told, will make sub-metering a more complicated and expensive job than it should be (potentially over 5 figures.) as it will involve rewiring. Now, in my experience, most licensed electricians think Arduino is a kind of pasta. They are not hackers, not creative, and never look for unconventional solutions to solving problems. (I'm not knocking the guys, but this is what joining the rat race for survival does to people--especially in NYC.) It never even occurred to me that there might be an unconventional solution to my problem until I spotted this 'ible. If you: Have the skills to implement an adaption of this set-up, or have a proposal of your own as to how to solve my problem; are close to New York; and would be willing to consult with a licensed electrician and myself, you may very well be able to save me $5k or $6k, 60% of which would go to you if the plan was adopted and worked. (Otherwise I'd still compensate you for your time at a rate we both agree in advance to be fair.) Anyone interested please PM me.  Thanks. PS I don't think of myself as a businessman or landlord. I inherited the building, would sell it in a heartbeat if my brother (who I co-own it with) let me, and I'd rather be writing and making stuff out things I find dumpster-diving than collecting rent checks. But since I'm currently stuck in the role, I'm trying to make the building as green as I can.
