My brother make videos and we have an iMac, lets just say it is not substantial for his needs. Now just to get the point across we came up with a fair MAC-Pro, it has an SSD for faster boot and render, then a 1 tb drive for storage, a 4 core cpu, two radion hd whatevers, two monitors and no other special add-ons, price = 6,992.00 USD. Now we came up with a massive decked out PC based substantially off of Dream Machine 2011. It has an SSD, an intel i7 3.4 ghz (two more than the mac and 200 dollars less) a 3 tb massive kick ass hard drive which cost less than the one tb, 8 gb of ram for 50 dollars, the mac was well over 300. The biggest newest graphics card NVIDIA has the 590 costing about 750 dollars. Two 27" monitors a decked out sound system, a RAT 5 Mouse, a generic keyboard, v8 cpu cooler, fair case from cooler master, 1000w power supply, Blue Ray dual write disk drive thing, and the dream machine mobo. It came in at 2950 dollars and every price for parts was rounded up to the nearest 5 dollars. Mac = about 7000 PC = about 3000 Mac = less storage, less speed, less performance PC = KICK ASS Mac = is it worth it just to do videos PC = what is a good PC movie aplication/program

Hey all, Today I bought a PC board (printed circuit). I plan on making a flashlight with it and some 10 mm LED's I have, but I need some info on how to use the board. If I have a PC Board, how would I put the LED's on the circuit board for all of the lights to show up at once. (hence the flashlight). If anyone could diagram it out, or tell me a good way to do this, it would be really apprciated. Thanks a ton, Nicholas Brenn

I'm trying to find a simple way to turn on my PC multiple times each day. I use the BIOS to turn it on now to record radio streams. I'd like something external to the PC, and something I could use to set several On Times each day. I don't know where to start. Should I attempt adding a relay to parallel the PC's power switch and then activate the relay? Should I attempt to build Rube Goldberg mechanism to mechanically activate PC's power switch? Wake-On-Lan doesn't seem to be the answer as how would I reliably send signal while I sleep? Even if you don't know of something specific, I'd be interested in where to look or approaches to investigate. Thanks, Scott

I have a big outdoor plastic closet with shelfs in my garden. i want to place a pc with crt screen inside heating the space in which the pc and screen are to be located is 1/4 m3 (1 m wide x 1/2 m deep x 1/2 m height between the shelfs) or 1/2 m3 (1 m height) but with other objects sharing the space the computer is a pentium 1 (~40 W power). it is intended to be on for long periods with the door closed. the closet stands in a shaded place but air temperature outside can get to 35 C + sometimes. i dont want to cut vent holes in the closet the monitor (15 crt) is off when the door is closed. though i may switch it off and close the door while it is still hot how to prevent overheating ? is a water tank thermostat set to 45 C in the air near the pc (with the 240 V to the pc going thru it) good enough thermal protection ? insects we have lots of ants. how to protect the pc from them ? will the hot air in the closet be enough to distract them ?

Hey guys...i was just wondering two things. First, is it theoretically possible to build one of these nintendo pc's to be operated as a fully functional pc for gaming and internet use, with your tv as a monitor and to install jacks to be able to connect to a surround sound system? also, i am not too good with computers and all that jazz but ever consider a nes controller that would operate as a mouse? this, of course, would be assuming that you could use your pc in the way i mentioned above, if not it would be kind of pointless. i also thought it would be nifty if it could be a wireless deal...you know...just so you don't have to sit 3 feet away from your television...

This is just a quick forrum post telling anybody who is interested where they can find old PC 133 memory. I don't know if any other nerds are still running old old old computers that use PC 133 memory but I sure am. I know from experience that sometimes it can be very hard to find memory sticks for upgrade/replacement. But here is a great place to get 256mb modules of old PC 133 memory: http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/prodinfo.asp?number=A20386 The memory modules are new and are pretty cheap. Goldmine Electronics also has lots of other cool stuff. Hope this helps some of you.

But my only problem is that when I play it for about 45 minutes my entire computer just restarts.... It kinda sucks... I mean.. I can only play like, two games of Team Fortress Two in that amount of time! It's crazy! I need to figure out how to make this totally not happen ever again.

Hi! Got a Dell 8600 Inspiron When I boot, the fan briefly turns twice. Begins to start, but stops abruptly. Doesn't do anything else. I think the fan needs to be replaced, but if it is faulty, why is it able to start briefly? I noticed this b/c it was getting very hot and I noticed a very very very faint beeping sound coming from around the area of the fan. Random beeping, no pattern to it. Any advice/suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

I want to put a PC in my car as a media source for music/podcasts, movies for the kids, park and surf at hotspots, etc. Has anyone done this? I have an older laptop that I can use/sacrifice, or should I get a small pc case? Things I want to do: #Can I hook it up to the "key on" power to boot when I start the car. #The laptop battery is weak and only gives power to the laptop for a few minutes (about 15 minutes then just enough to shut down) #Disconnect and relocate the screen or install a touch screen #Roof-mount (magnetic base) hi gain wi-fi antenna #the in dash stereo has RCA/mini-jack inputs for sound #I'm good with cars and computers. I can replace an axle as easily as a hard drive. I'm not afraid of getting greasy or soldering on boards. In other words, I believe I am up for the challenge Any help or advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. peace, Scott

Please Read Before Commenting:Allow me to clarify:First, I hate calling it mac vs. pc, as a Mac is also a personal computer, but for convenience we'll stick with the idea that there's difference. My reason for making this thread is that I recently learned that the UF college of journalism (one of the best journalism schools in the US) requires all of it's third year students to own a macbook. Not just the photographers/multimedia students, but all of them. The photography aspect is the one that I care about. What I'm looking for in this thread is to be convinced that Macs are better than PCs for graphic work.I won't be rebutting or flaunting the advantages of PCs, and I hope none of you will, either. I just want to know what the real advantages are, particularly from people who are actually knowledgeable in the field. Please don't respond with vague statements about reliability and a lack of viruses. I would like quantitative reasons (relating to photography/graphic design), and not just your feelings. If you think that the main reason to use a Mac is the OS, tell me 1) Why? 2) Would it be just as good on another piece of hardware? Thanks! I look forward to reading your responses, and I hope my above message didn't come off as mean...I just don't want this to be a flame war.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this so i'm sorry if its not. I am looking to control a set of switches using an old mobile phone connected to my PC. Sending a text message to the phone would let you do various things depending on the text message content. I don't even know if this would be possible but it is something I am looking to do and this seems to be one of the solutions (if possible) to what I need to do. If anyone else can help me with a way to control anything remotely without a wireless Internet connection, possibly even if its only 3G/EDGE/HSDPA Thanks

Ok here is the idea, I have a main tower, plus a dozen or so old ones. I wsa wondering if it is possible to some how link 2 motherboards so that one acts as a slave for the other. First thought was that it may be as simple as running a cable from the ide ports. That may be totally off but that is where I got the idea. Target goals of theory 1. Additional disk drives- this would allow you to use additional HDD in the other case this was my primary objective. 2. Might the additional processor be able to split the tasks of the computer as a whole? In theory would it then be ran as 2 seperate computers or as one whole with dual processors (does such a thing exist?) 3. extra usb space. 4. additional vga outputs- I have 5 screens right now using the onboard, a dual port pci-e and a pci vid card plus a usb adapter one. rather clusterry. I have a additional screen but no card space for it. I intend to eventually be able to use each independantly or as one large 2x3 screen for watching movies, but that in itself is not as of yet crucial to the theory. So can it be done buy this method or for that matter any method? If so how would I even start? I thank all those much wiser on this that I in advance

Ok I've got an idea of a aarcade like gun that could be used for your everyday PC \lappy. I was thinkin that people could probably use the arcade gun for a mouse. Instead of using it just for game etc it could used to play FPS game and even for FPS creator so instead of using your mouse it could be as if you were the character and the one who is aiming!!! I even noticed that the newer or older? guns with a slide would be cooler.

I'm posting this to share my experience and opinion of Mac's VS PC's. I welcome you to read and share your story. For many years I was a PC. I believed whole-heartedly that I needed Windows, and I needed Microsoft. Then I bought my last laptop. It wasn't cheap. I used it everyday for work and therefore it was important that it ran efficiently. Like many of you, I suffered from "blue screens" and on occasion a "crash". There were viruses and trojans and attacks from all places, you'd think I was engaged in war! Then the proverbial "last straw" occurred. I needed to upgrade into some new software, and I received a simple message that I needed to also upgrade the Windows Service Pack. Hmmm.... Seemed easy enough. (Been there. Done that.) So, off I went to download the SP (from a reputable source) and then "Success!"... I got a message that said "Successfully installed. Windows must restart to complete process". Hmmm... Ok... I pressed through the process to restart my machine and there it began.... The long and never ending cycle had started! My laptop shut down, started to boot and then upon seeing the (dare I say it?) Vista Start Up Screen, my laptop promptly repeated itself and began to reboot... o_0 ??? This went on for sometime... *anger growing*... NOTHING I did would stop this, or should I say NOTHING would START my laptop. It was forever entangled into a mysterious vortex of computer "Neverland". I was NOT impressed. I had to borrow another computer to do some research and found very little at the time to explain this conundrum. Then I tried Microsoft. I used their "so-called" online customer service department and was put in touch with someone who was younger than my oldest pair of shoes. He also couldn't speak English very well, so without being incredibly rude I requested another agent. Upon conversing with agent #2, I knew I was in trouble... (Was Agent #2 related to Agent #1???) ... o_0 ??? *shakes head* I will give credit to Agent #2. He was nice. He tried his hardest to suggest everything under the sun, but alas, we both concluded it was hopeless. The final bluescreen error number confirmed the toe tag on my machine. So I was left with having to reinstall the entire system and lose EVERYTHING on my laptop. *fuming mad now* Then it occurred to me that "Windon'ts" (as I affectionately call them now), opted not to provide me with necessary disks to reinstall their OS during my purchase. It seems that the cost of a CD has become so expensive for Microsoft that they are forced to leave it up to the consumer to fend for themselves. Clearly, they are suffering financially, No? When I rationalized this logic with Agent #2, he suggested that I purchase Windows 7 as it had just come out and was much better than Vista (No kidding.... *rolls eyes*). But why? Why prey-tell should I have to purchase anything? My laptop was only 14 months old (conveniently out of warranty) and may as well have been a pre-historic dinosaur as far as Agent #2 was concerned. So where did me and Agent #2 leave off? He suggested I "borrow" an installation disk from someone and reinstall windows vista and start over... *tics forming now...* He assured me that my "service call to Microsoft" would remain as "unsolved". (Oh btw, at this point we were regulars on the telephone). So my ONE LAST QUESTION to him was: "What assurance do I have, after reinstalling Vista and then the SP I need, that this problem won't just start again?" - His reply was, "Well, it shouldn't"... Straw officially broken. Now we come to my life with my new MacBook. Clearly much more expensive than a Windon'ts PC, but wait... Is it? Let's review. There are more "open-source apps" available to a Mac (meaning you get them for free), and in most cases I find they are the same if not better than the paid for MS version. The critical applications that I use everyday for work, installed fine and without issue. I also received "DISKS" from Apple. Apparently they can afford to give customers what they pay for.... Upon opening the box, I was running my new laptop within 5 minutes. Easy Peasy... The time alone that I save from all that aggravation is money in the bank. Do I miss anything? Yes, actually I do (or maybe I don't). What I miss out on are bluescreens, viruses, trojans, attacks, intrusions, crashes and all the other fun stuff I got to know and expect with a PC. So why tell all of you about this now? Well yesterday I noticed that the bottom of my MacBook had a slight bulge in the case. *Heart skipped a beat*. Then after some mild panic, with visions of my last ordeal swirling in my head, I went online in search of why, and found the answer within 5 minutes. Apparently this was something Apple became aware of and had a simple solution. Fill out a contact information form along with my serial number and I got a confirmation message. Not only would I receive an ENTIRELY NEW bottom to my MacBook, I would receive a full set of screws AND a screwdriver!!! All FREE OF CHARGE. NO SHIPPING FEES. COST ME NOTHING!!! *shocked* Now I was beaming. *ear to ear grin* I felt validated for my departure from PC. Then in some kind of absurd customer service universe, I received a knock at the door. My replacement parts had arrived!!! - Less than 24 hours later... *mouth gaping and eyes wide* So I thank you for reading this. I encourage you to share your opinions. If you don't know who I am. I am canucksgirl. I'm a Mac. Not a PC.
