Pea - es - thuree

Because the laptop I'm using takes 10-20 minutes to boot and the desktop is not set up with internet yet(and will not be for a long time) and is slow as hell , I use the ps3 for general web browsing. But when ever I try to access instructables, it says 403 and then something about that I don't have administrative permission. I would love it if you wonderful folks would look into that. BTW; the ps3 uses a crap - modified version of Netscape.

What is the best way to freeze peas in the pod? Answered

I am finally getting a good crop of edible pod peas, also known as snow peas and/or Chinese peas.  These are the ones that are really sweet and you pick and eat the whole thing while its small. I have tried freezing them before but it didn't work very good. What is a good way to freeze them that will preserve the taste and texture? Will it work better if I cook them first?

Black Eyed Peas - Rock That Body, Speaker Gun!

So I just watched the music video for Rock That Body by Black Eyed Peas and I thought it'd be a cool idea if someone figured out how to make speaker guns. I'm guessing if someone were to pursue in making one there'd be a audio cord coming out of it to attach to music player and I'd think it'd be cool if the trigger would turn on the speakers. Of course there should be a switch also that turns it on and off so you wouldn't have to hold the trigger. I'd love it if someone came up with an instructable for this. I read that they used nerf guns and speakers and painted it black.

My Favorite Food Author

I like the instructables here. They are good. But the most useful food instructions  I have seen are from Mark Bittman of the NYT  His column was called the Minimalist and they are on youtube Here is an example, fresh pea soup. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTUVTqWc_Vc

Can I mix cement, aggregate, and water in place?

I have a 250 sq. ft. area that has 2" of pea gravel on top of clay.  Can I mix cement into the gravel then water from the top to get a surface hard enough to put pavers or stones on?

How do I replace chain link fence posts? Answered

I have a really old chain link fence that completely encloses my yard on three sides. Both sides and all the corner posts are metal and firmly in the ground with concrete. But for a 5 "post" section in the back of the yard, the previous owner just stuck RR ties in the ground, which are rotted and leaning. I want to replace these with metal posts. My question is: should I set the posts in cement or pea gravel? I've read arguments for both on this site. Since the other sides and the corners are sturdy, do I need to wait 24 hours before reattaching the chain link "fabric?" Thanks in advance! Any advice would be appreciated!

Old fashioned sweets? Answered

This will probable only apply to UK based answerers of a "certain age" When I was a kid (1960's) we could buy a nut based sweet/treat - in a cardboard box, the resembled brown wrinkled peas - they were chewy (not Toffee) and a natural nut - slightly sweet to taste Any idea of the name - it's driving me nuts.

Do any of you think you can make a speaker gun like the one from Black Eyed Peas in Rock That Body?

Here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmnjL26OBcY&feature;=player_embedded I'd imagine that there'd be an audio jack cord for the music player. But also I was thinking that for the trigger that it'd turn on the speakers. And then of course maybe an on and off switch so one wouldn't have to be pulling the trigger the whole time.

Firstly, when I say "stakes" I mean a giant setup made out of 2 stakes and chickwire, extremely good for climbing (in brilliant Australian sub-tropical, metal in full sunlight still can't burn plants). High-Tech Peashooters with laser beams!

In this peashooter competition in the UK, some entrants have modified their basic tubes with some high-tech parts. This one uses a laser sight and a gyroscope to help aim. All of this is fine with the organizers who have allowed laser sights for a decade.Even so, the winner this year was someone with a regular peashooter so it still is quite a bit about skill. Building materials for kayak?

HI there I was wondring if anyone has ever considered/ tried building a solid bottom kayak out of recycled plastic (maybe a bin)? I loved the ease of carrying and price of my inflatable kayak but hate how easy it is to puncture in running water. I'd like to make something thats light to carry to the water and can stand being bashed around a bit. I was thinking of cutting some pannels out of any plastic I can get my paws on, stitch and gluing them together to form a sort of pea pod shape and then lining the edge with some of that foam stuff they make floats out of. Any thoughts?

I'm trying to find a pattern to turn a flat piece of sheet metal into a hemisphere. Can anyone help me?

I've downloaded Pepakura and I can't figure out how to do it. My ultimate goal is to make Peas in a pod out of sheet metal for my wife. I've made the pod (and figured out how to work with, and weld sheet metal in the process. I don't know how I'm going to make sheet metal spheres about the size of baseballs. I've seen on "how it's made' how they used flat sheets of paper, die cut them, and then kind of folded them over a hemispherical form to make half a globe. I just need that pattern. Anyone? Thank you! Steve

Too big enclosure for sub woofer?

Last year had a lot of bad luck making my bike sound system. I made some boxes, fried some electronics, etc. The boxes were too big for easy handling, so I'll make another attempt, since spring is coming. I noticed the speaker (driver) did not like higher volumes; very large excursions in the lower Hz range , probably hitting the end of its moving range. It is a closed enclosure, no port. The RMS output of the amp is probably many times lower than the RMS rating of the speaker (driver); logitech 2.1 computer amp with consumer grade sub speaker (6"). Same problem occurs with my home 10" 60 W RMS driver in a closed ca. 70 l - ca.15 Gallon barrel, with a modest 25W RMS amp: I cannot even turn it halfway up:  it is mounted horizontally, and shoots peas 40 cm (16") up! Would it be more helpful to make the box / barrel less square? Like halve the size by putting a diagonal separator in the box? Or is geometry irrelevant and does only volume matter? Perhaps there even might be a formula????

Instructables Gift Exchange Entry

OK, I'm in.  I was hesitant to enter this because my time is extremely limited, and i didn't want to disappoint my recipient.  But I think I can work with the due date.  :) My skills include:  Woodworking, Electronics, mechanics... What I'd like to make for someone:  Depends on what they like! I'd be willing to make this size gift package for someone (choose all that apply): Medium, but it'll probably end up being large (knowing me I'll probably go overboard) I'd be willing to receive a smaller or larger size gift package from someone than the one I make for someone else:  At least medium, thanks.  :) What I like:  Geeky stuff, sci-fi, electronics, tools, music, handmade wooden items.  What I don't like:  Dust collectors.  If it's going to sit on a shelf, it should have a purpose or at least blink or something! I absolutely can't have: allergic to cats, sesame, chicken (yes, really), and peas. Type of thing I'd love to receive:  Something I can display proudly or use on a regular basis. Would you be willing to ship to an address outside your own country?  Sure, as long as it's to a country that Canada Post will ship to! Confirm that are at least 18 years old or, if not, that you have the approval of a parent or guardian:  Yeah, passed that mark a while ago...  ;)

Do i need to use this output from my DC motor speed control board?

Hi With the goal of using the DC treadmill style motor that i have in a project (or two), i have baught a SCR speed control board. The circuitry of the control board has outputs for the armature and field coil (labeled "excitation"). But the motor that i have is a permanent magnet type (2 wires going in / out  - red and black - nice and simple). So i don't need the 'excitation' output. My question is whether the control board needs this to be used? Am i going to fry my brand new controller if i only draw current through the armature output? I could, for instance, put a resistive load accross this output to make it use just less than the output it's rated for. Here's more info on the parts in question: The speed controller is like this:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-0-220V-Continuous-Adjustable-Dc-Motor-Speed-Regulator-Control-Board-1000W-/251600102759?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash;=item3a9488e567 or this:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/1x-DC-Motor-Speed-Controller-Adjuster1000W-AC110V-220V-Input-2A-3A-4A-5A-output-/321526825620?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash;=item4adc7e0294 The motor is either of the models on this page (i actually have one of each): http://www.ectrade.com/Auction/FreeSample/1931851586/Electric_treadmill_motor_DC-specific.html Thanks in advance. Holey Expanded Polystyrene! Weevils are eating my noodles!

And they're eating their way in through the styrofoam cup. I didn't think they could do that.  I thought there was a rule against that, or that they would not like the taste of styrofoam, or something.  And how did they get through the layer of shrink wrap plastic that's wrapped around the styrofoam cup?  I knew you would not believe it either. That's why I took some pictures. You see?  You see those little evil weevil-sized holes in the side of the cup? See the circular pile of weevil dust on the top of the dried noodles?  I told you it was true. I really don't mind the taste of weevils in my noodles, but the darned styrofoam cup is not going to hold water with those holes in it.  So I tape over those holes with clear plastic (cellophane?) tape, and now I can put some hot water on those noodles. The last picture shows the noodles in their hot, wet, state. There is a weevil carcass barely visible, or maybe it is just a shed exoskel (I think they molt) floating on top of that green pea, on the left there. Edit: I just noticed the finished, empty, cup has dead weevils stuck to the sides, and these are a pretty good example of what weevils and weevil exoskeletons look like, for anyone who has not seen weevils before.

Halloween = Success at Instructables HQ

Welcome to Letters from the Editor, a new feature we're trying out!  This week I'd like to share some highlights from our recent Halloween Show & Tell party. It's been a busy week here at Instructables HQ.  Halloween is a favorite holiday around here, and when we do it, we do it up right.  This year we did a series of in-house projects and guides to bring you the best of Instructables Halloween, and we went all out. Our ramp-up to Halloween culminated in a community-wide Show & Tell last Friday night.  HQ was transformed into a proper party hub as we socialized, snacked, and shared our latest projects with the crowd.  The night kicked off with an impressive costume by Peter and Nick Matsakis (winners of our costume contest!) inspired by the game Plants vs. Zombies.  Peter dressed as a Threepeater with working pea shooters, and Nick was Crazy Dave.  Why?  Because he's CRAAAAAAZY! Other highlights from the Show & Tell included Grathio Labs' Secret Knock Detecting Gumball Machine (you have to know the secret knock to get the gum!), and Robert Hermes' impressive Covert Public Messages, which you can only see when looking through polarized lenses. Very cool stuff. And let's not forget the food!  Drawing from our library of creepy Halloween treats, we recreated Edible Zombie Eyeballs omitting the goo to make it vegan-friendly, Pumpkin Bread in mini muffin form, Extra Satanic Deviled Eggs with a wasabi twist, and Halloween Candy Bark in various creepy colors.  Additionally, you can look forward to new Instructables detailing the making of peanut butter and chocolate Buckeyes and my Towering Pumpkin Cheesecake! All in all, it's been a very successful Halloween season.  Next we look to all of the great contests we have running.  Did you know that Humana's giving away a Dream Vacation to one very lucky innovative user!  Enter now! And don't forget to check back next week to cast your votes for our Halloween Contest finalists.  We weren't the only ones to go all out - you impressed us with almost 400 entries already! Until next time, all the best. Sarah P.S. for even more pictures, look here and here!

Food Creator and dispensor

This project is currently in the research stage. Having been reading the books 'Zero to Maker' by David Lang (OpenROV) and 'The Toaster Project' by Thomas Thwaites I have realised what I need is a project with a goal to take me out of the Arduino blinky light and solder kit zone, in to real making/hacking. Lang suggests an 'Unknown Project' which as I understand it is one that has been unexplored or under-explored, and he also suggests that using a popular forum to log, share and discus ideas would help the process along. So my idea, is an open hardware food creating machine, that will produce a large array of food, from a limited array of ingredients (approx 50) that can be made easily, and a ingredient markup language. 3d food printers in current development are either impractical or unappealing to me. They range from candy makers, ones that still need to be hand finished and cooked or the one publicised for receiving NASA funding recently used dead bugs. They seem all to focus on the gimmick, and not the food, and I like food. The other approach is the barbots, which seem to mostly perform flawlessly, but are unable to produce food. So my approach is to work through the process logically and break it down to sub projects. Design meals by hand using the limited ingredients for proof of concept, choose the ingredients to provide the widest possible range of nutrients and transpose the recipies to psudocode that can be easilly transformed in to a markup language later. Design a process for mixing and cooking ingredients. I envision a system of different food processors, steamers, boilers etc. and a range of extruding dies. Design a self cleaning system. Possibly ultrasonic or ionic. To that end, here is my preliminary list of ingredients. sugar, salt, oil, water, co2,Alcohol 37.5%,pectin,bicarb,nutritional yeast coffee, tea, mint, cocoa, garlic, oregano, chilli powder, paprika rice, soya, corn, wheat lemon extract, orange extract, tomato powder, dried apple, dried carrots, dried peas, potato powder. These ingredients can be used to make among other things, sausages, burgers, curry's, pasta, fries, soups, cereals, 'cider', cocktails, deserts, sodas, sauces, egg cheese and milk substitutes. So that's my plan. What do you guy think, and what ingredients would you add and why? And what would you call it? There are loads of things I left out as everything will change as I work through the process. Thanks for reading, Haydn
