Performance.

We all want our guns to shoot far and to fire fast, but how much performance do we actually need? Makers of Oodammo pistols boast that they shoot 60 - 70 feet, but there is no way that you can reliably hit a moving target with a knex gun at that range with any weapon, especially pistols. A good weapon should be able to fire fast, and be accurate to say 30 feet. This would allow the said gun to hit targets ar range reliably. Think about it.

Laptop battery loosing performance?

I jut got my new laptop. My questions is how do i prevent my battery from loosing performance? I know that my battery wont stay at the same performance level for a long time, but i would like to slow the proces down. I take my laptop to school mon-fri. one thing i do is to unplug the power source when the battery is fully charged (otherwise i think it damages the battery), and recharges the battery when power is low. Are there other ways to treat the battery so it doesn't loses performance as fast? What do you do/think?

I play in a band with some seasoned musicians. We played our first gig last saturday and we sounded like )(*?

I play in a band and we have practiced and perfected a lot of material, however our first gig, (last Saturday) did not sound as good as I thought we would sound.  He hooks up stuff to the new mixer and runs it through the The key word here is "sound". Here is a quick overview of our resources. We had a lot of cracking (distortion) going on throughout our performance, thus taking away from our actual abilities and capabilities. *I think we are overloading our poweed mixer. WE have two powered mixers. One is an older model (6) channel mixer and the newer powered mixer has approx 16. The band member who owns all the equipment makes the decisions as to how everything is hooked up. I do have experience and have had college courses on mixers, but am reluctant to say anything about how things should be hooked up. I was thinking maybe we should run vocals through one and all other equipment should run through the new mixer.

Extreme Futurist Festival 2012

The END OF THE WORLD at www.extremefuturistfestival.com the VORTEX IMMERSION DOME 450 South Bixel Street, Los Angeles, CA 90017 featuring SURVIVAL RESEARCH LABORATORIES show Extreme Futurist Festival is a 2 day arts and technology festival focusing on radical voices of the new evolution. Last year we had a great event and were called "a TED conference for the counterculture" by the LA Weekly. This year we seek to make XFF an even more epic experience. People are going insane over the Mayan calendar hype about the world ending on 12/21/12. This is why we have decided to bring them the apocalypse they deserve. We are throwing an end-of-the-world conference that you will not forget. Children get in free. We will be focusing on cutting edge science and technology along with transgressive performance art and music. Showcasing the most innovative and subversive memetics of our time, we see to highlight an extreme future that breaks the formula of modern culture. The future has been commodified by the mainstream in an effort to make revolutionary technologies easy to digest. As a result we are now living in an era of complacency, in which the true leaders and game changers are made to feel like outsiders. It is time to rise against the dominant current of our society and declare that nothing is too extreme. We refuse to be assimilated into a carbon copied version of a new humanity. As evolutionary agents we will push the boundaries of what it means to transform our species. XFF is organized by Rachel Haywire, Christopher Jannette, and Sean Humphries.

Help with stage props

Hello Instructables community users, My name is Jezen Thomas and I'm here to ask for help with designing and creating some stage props to be used during a music performance. I'm not necessarily asking for free blueprints, although I'm clueless as to where I should start and I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction. The first prop I need to produce is a giant telephone. I'm not 100% sure yet if I want it to be a modern styled mobile phone, or a vintage circular-dial type phone. I know aesthetically it's a big difference, but I'm sure thematically either would be just as effective on stage. I would like the phone to be similar in size and design to the giant mobile phone used on the old British comedy show, Trigger Happy TV. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, you can see exactly what I mean here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRWRJtIY5to Again, any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance, and best regards, - Jezen Thomashttp://www.jezenthomas.co.uk

Why Knex bullpups are (mostly) useless and a stupid idea.

So in the real world the point of a bullpup design is to either reduce the overall length of a gun, or to have the same length of gun but with a longer barrel, which results in a higher velocity bullet which can go further.  Another often added bonus is that the gun is more balanced weight wise around the handle, making it easier to handle.   Now to crush your dreams. Not a single on of those advantages carries over to knex guns.  Not one.  A bullpup knex gun will only end up longer(yes LONGER), use more parts, have theoretically lower range, it is less balanced, and more complicated with more things that can go wrong.   With a knex gun, you want as short of a barrel as possible for the shot to go through, so that there is as little friction as possible on it.  This is one reason that turret guns can be so powerful.  Now with a bullpup design, you almost automatically have to add a longer barrel, as the shot has to leave the action area AND go over your handle/trigger mech.  Not good. The gun will be less balanced because now basically the entire gun is behind the handle, unless you put some fat barrel on the front to balance it out, but then that breaks the first point I talked about, as well as using many more parts and defeating the purpose of being a shorter weapon.  Most ram guns now are mostly balanced, as the handle is usually in the middle of the gun, as the ramrod has to be pulled behind it as well as going in front of it, so you place the handle and trigger as close to the middle so as to make the trigger simpler. Now as to why making a knex bullpup will make it longer, just look at the pictures.  It will make sense then.  Also this is why you need many more parts for a gun like this.  Also the stock becomes disgustingly long. And finally, this is more of a design issue than a complete flaw, but the trigger is usually(USUALLY) weaker and more prone to failure/not working correctly with a bullpup gun.   Now this doesn't apply to everthing.  Slingshot guns and repeating slingshot guns actually benefit from a bullpup design, that will actually make them shorter and more balanced, because they are more similar to real guns in their layout in that the shot/magazine is the farthest part back in the mechanism.  Also replicas, well duh.   The pictures should make this all make more sense.  And I assumed a build for performance, so the pin draw is long and the magazine is as far away from the pin as possible.  Because all knex guns should be built like that.

Question regarding Music to LEDs performance improvement.

I recently built the simple circuit that everyone has seen on Instructables on how to sync LEDs to music using the 3.5 audio jack from your computer. I had a couple question on how to improve the performance. The lights bump to the music accordingly, but it has to be a profound change in sound for the lights to really look cool. (Like from silence to a bass hit) Is there a way to improve upon this? To make the lights respond in a clearer way when there is a lot of stuff going on in the song? Perhaps a different voltage? (Currently using a 9v battery to power the system) The sound on my computer has to be turned up quite high for the circuit to respond. Is this normal? Thanks in advance.

MAGIC BOX pyrotechnics !! ?? lol

I want this box to perform. I am going to give this to my friend with the gift inside, so I can imagine having little pointers like "light here" etc. I've tried to google this, but I am not finding any crazy magic boxes that do things kinda dangerous like this lol. Have you seen one, have you seen similar installations? My goal is to figure out the best way, and do an instructable on it, how I manage to orchestrate it. Any tips, pointers, experience would be amazing! This box will end up shoe-box size or smaller, and I may line it with aluminum to deflect the sparklers and reflect the light LOL. :D Thanks in advance! <3

K'nex guns; Lower piece count, still great performance?

I love building with k'nex. I've always been fascinated by the k'nex guns on this site, but all the good ones need tons of pieces. And all of the simple guns are too, well, simple! I want to build these guns so i can modify them or even re-design them myself, but i can never find k'nex where I live, and I don't have a credit card to buy online (Parents would, but don't have the money themselves). So, are there any good guns out there that can be stripped of some parts, but maintain their functionality? I'd prefer something semi-automatic, with good range, but feel free to mention single-shots too. Revolvers, pump action, and chain feds would be awesome too. When i say stripped of some parts, I really mean bare essentials. If its not necessary for functionality, I don't want it.

Great event to show off your cool contraptions!!!

I just thought I would let you know of an event I'm producing in September in Northern Ca. It's going to be quite Edwardian-Futurist in orientation and aesthetic. The event is a human-powered, kinetic, rail-bound sculpture race and so much more. We have negotiated with the city of Santa Rosa, Ca., to close down a number of streets and we will be using the Railroad Square Depot parking lot and railroad tracks for our main event. There will be an array of bicycle based contraptions. Exhibitions of Mechanical and Artistic Wonders by all sorts of notorious tinkers from around the Bay Area. (Cyclecide, Kinetic Steam Works, Bryan Tedrick, Todd Barricklow, Neverwas Haul and more) There will be food booths, amazing craft vendors, all day music, random circus acts, large art installations and sideshow performances as well. www.handcarregatta.com

Giant Mobile Pipe Organ!

Howdy! For those of you who've been around for a while you might remember me as one of Instructables' interns. I had the awesome privilege of being published in The Best of Instructables for my Guitar Hero controller hack. I'm currently working on a big project and would love your help. I've been nominated for an award through The Fun Theory. The proposal is to create a pipe organ, called the Anywhere Organ, in which each pipe is connected to an air supply via a flexible hose. This allows the pipes to be installed with special care and attention to any space, creating a unique instrument whose character is an aspect of that space. The system is devised around Processing with midi signals coming in from a keyboard and being sent out to an Arduino to control the pipes. A lot of the decision of what project gets the grant is your opinion and your votes. If you like the idea I'd love your support. Take a look at my proposal here. Vote for it with the little blue dots below the comments. They work just like the star rating system on Youtube. Thank you all for listening and have fun making. If this project goes through you know I'll be documenting all the cool stuff I discover here. Matthew Borgatt/bofthem/gianteye sinbox.org

Illuminated Figure Skating Costume

The animated lighting element in this figure skating costume by ShowOfLight reacts to music by using beat and pitch recognition technology and motion sensor to bring the animation in sync with the performer. While this sounds great, and looks impressive, the video demonstrates how this is one example of technology overshadowing art.  Though many of Marina Polakoff's other works integrate soft circuitry with subtlety and beauty, the line of costumes for the performing arts may be too distracting.  Consider the lovely ice skating routine in the video that must be performed in the dark.  Which were you watching - her salchow or her flashing bananas?  (seriously, there are animated bananas) Regardless of my opinion, I'm sure this is one performance the judges will never forget. via: talk2myshirt
