Looking for Magnets and / or Permenent Magnet Generators 12 Volts for Africa

Hello, I am working with a couple of young men in Togo, West Africa. They sell solar panels, and because batteries are so expensive, it they did one of them bike rim windmills, and generated 12 volts, during the nights, the houses could power up LED lights. Which 12 volt generator would you recommend to buy on Ebay? Please paste a link. What specific magnets are good for the bike rim, please give me the specific link on ebay. I hope someone has done this, and does know how, I can search.. . I watch so many videos it drives me crazy, I want to replicate, and often the buying details are not included. Permanent Magnet Motor

I learned a couple of years ago about a motor developed by Nikolai Tesla that operates using neodymium magnets. If anyone has any information about this or other similar motors, please post information and help to save the earth from the evils of oil!

I have not made this yet, but my idea is building an electric generator using a bicycle wheel surrounded by a non turning metal frame. Tightly backed on the bicycle wheel would be permanent magnets arranged in a slant pointing in the same diection and outward toward the surrounding frame. On the frame would again be permanent magnets wrapped with copper wire slanting inward toward the bicycle wheel. The magnets facing each other would have like poles. North facing north or south facing south. I know this is just like an electric motor so far. You would get the electricity from the arrangement by placing a thin copper stip on the top of the frame. But different from the motor is the idea that like poles repel. once you gave the wheel a slight movement in the same direction that the magnets slant the wheel would turn until the magnetic energy would exhaust. You could make strong magnets using rebar wrapped in copper wire and use a inverter to change the AC in your house to DC and connect the current to the copper wire surrounding the rebar. Then when the magnetism of the rebar is sufficiently strong cut the rebar using a hack saw into small pieces to place in either the bicycle wheel or metal frame surrounding the wheel, I'm not sure of the electric power dynamics you could produce, but it would seem that using strong enough magnets could make a generator that could power as large a device with amperage/volts you can create. It might be used as a device to run your furnace blower or refrigerator in an emergency if the power produced was high enough. I think this would all depend on the strength of the magnets you produce. But if it works-you could have electric power from the magnets as an alternative to batteries or gas driven generators.

Neodymium Magnets? Answered

I have a motor out of an waxer/buffer and I was wondering what improvements neodymium magnets would be.  I have a couple plans for this motor, the first being for a temporary ball mill, and the second for a generator.  I am pretty sure the neodymium would be good for a generator, but what about a motor.  I am also wondering what magnets to get.  Should the north pole be the outside, south pole be the outside, should it be magnetized thru circumference, magnetized through thickness, or south on one side and north on the other.

Electromagnet using permanent magnets

Hi All, I'm attempting to make a very small strong electromagnet using permanent rare earth magnets. I want to boost the magnetic field and increase the magnetic force. The magnets are 10mm in length by 5mm in radius. I have 0.4mm2 enamelled solenoid wire for the winding. My questions are, Is it possible to increase the force of a permenent  magnet? Will the induced flux into the magnet compile the force or will the EMF have to be greater to see an effect? Will paralleling two windings make the EMF stronger? As the magnets are small I have limited room to wrap windings so is there a more effective method? Any help would be great!

Need help making a permanent magnet alternator

Hi - I have need of a small electric motor, and came across something called an altermotor.  This is a converted car alternator that requires a permanent magnet rotor assembly, the removal of the diode pack and a controller.  This is also supposed to be good for up to 4HP off 12V.  I've worked out everything but how to make the permanent magnet rotor.  Does anyone know how to do this?  I'd like to do this with high quality neo magnets, preferably with more than 12 bar magnets.  A car's alternator is the perfect size for the application, which is to run an air conditioner compressor for an electric car conversion.  A single 12V deep cycle battery would be able to run this allowing me to have air without cutting vehicle range since it would be able to operate off its own power system this way.  I'm not set on using a converted alternator though, if anyone knows a suitable 12V motor about the same size as an alternator that can produce at least 1HP and spin at least 2000RPM.

Original Question (Hi does anyone know of a material that will block the magnet field from a permenant magnet without the material being to thick.) Thanks for your replies, to go into more detail, the material must not be attracted to the magnet as would mild steel The magnet force/pull is about 1LB and I need a material less than 5mm thick that will reduce its pull by at least 10 percent but the higher the better. Also it must not cost a fortune, (How much does Mumetal cost and is it attracted to a magnetic force),  I have searched high and low and I am now begining to think that  my search is futile and maybe no such material has yet been discovered. Do PMDC motors and SWDC motors require different motor controllers? Answered

I'm looking to run two Etek-R PMDC motors from one 700 amp controller. Will a GE series 700 amp controller work? Upon calling the company that offered it today I received-- through proxy-- the response that the compnay carried no permanent magnet controllers. Is there a difference between pm and sw controllers? I was under the impression that both required the same type of control: varying voltages. could the company have confused permanent magnet with pulse width modulation? any explanation is greatly appreciated!

Large Speaker Driver needed.?

I have a large 8ohm speaker with a "12W500" rating, and another sticker saying 3/38/5 (QC check?)  ~18cm Magnet and 30cm Cone. I want a signal generator for  chladni plate (vibrating plate) I know how to make a signal generator from a 555, but i dont know how to drive the speaker magnet. Do I put the output to a "power transistor"? I have only used them for signal amplification before not power supply.. Will it run on 12V, 3V 24V? What kind of amps may it draw 200mA 500mA? 1A? 4A? I don't even know ballpark figures! Any tips, Circuits or transistor reccomendations will be VERY appreciated... I am fairly proficient at electronics, but this eludes me completely as it is taken for granted in most instances, or they use a 300€ amplifier.... I already build a signal generator. Cheers

Contactless Dynamo / Generator

Hi all,I am wishing to add some sort of dynamo to my bike to power lights. The main reasons are if the batteries get low I will forget to change them, and I will probably forget to turn the lights on. So off I went to eBay and bought a £4 generator and light set. It arrived and today I have been attempting to fit it - to no avail. I have a mountain bike with full suspension so there is no where suitable to fit it to.So back to the drawing board. I came across FreeLights. The idea itself looks promising (unlike their spelling), however their implementation probably wouldn't be any good for me as it appears to be aimed at thin framed bikes - hacking probably could be done, however I would like to roll my own solution, and create an Instructable in the process!So anyway, if you are too lazy to read the webpage above, here is how it works:- A magnet is attached to the spokes- There is another magnet in a container- The container has wires around it- The container connected to the forks so the magnets brush past itBasically it is like a cycle computer sensor, but it produces lots more electricity! I like their idea, but it seems rather inefficient as the magnet is just randomly spun hoping for the best. They offer a kit version which appears to use a spherical magnet, but even so it still seems rather inefficient to me. So on to two other possible options. The first is basically the same idea, but the magnet is fixed so it can only spin in one plane. Something like this [Ultra-simple Electric Generator]. The other option is to get rid of the spinning magnet, and instead just have coils like the various wind turbines on this site.So basically I want to know which method is the best, and given that how I can maximize the power produced. I am thinking just increasing the number of turns, stronger magnets, greater number of magnets on wheels, greater number of 'generators' etc. And then realistically, what sort of power I would be able to get?Cheers, Luca

USB generator

I am building a small crank-powered generator for a college electronics class that will power a USB port. I know a USB port supplies 5V DC, and that my generator will obviously produce AC current, but I'm not sure the best way to convert AC to DC, then how to step my voltage up to 5 volts. My generator uses 6 wire coils in a circular pattern. 12 neodymium magnet rotate over the coils. This doesn't seem like the most efficient design ever, but that part is a stock university kit, the wiring is up to me. I've only been able to test each coil at a time, and each one produces .5-.7 VAC. Do any electricians out there have some tips? When all is said and done, I'll definitely be posting an instructable on this.

Shape of coil windings on a axial flux generator

I am making a axial flux wind turbine. I have watched many tuts on YT and researched alot on the net, but there is one thing that is confusing regarding the coil windings: Does the gap in the middle of the coil have to be the size of the magnet? many people do this and many don't, from a engineering perspective, which is better, my understanding is that it is best to make the gap as small as possible, that way you use up most of the magnetic flux. What is the best approach and why?

Magnets, Magnetism, Field lines ???? An expert is needed for green wind power.

This is best placed in the green group as it is for the production of green electricity, but I think that it would not be out of place in the science section also. I have an idea, quite probably not an original one but an idea all the same. It came about as we go camping as a family and have been off the grid a few times. Basically we have had no way of charging our electronic devices for longish periods. Solar power I hear you cry, well that is all well and good if you live in a country that has good sunlight, but here in the UK it can be unpredictable and not produce enough charge to power modern devices. I am mucking about with dynamo’s on the bikes (pedal ones) and wind up devices. Something I am looking into is things like wind power or improved dynamo power. The basic principal behind all of these forms of power production is that of passing a conductor through a magnetic field to produce a potential difference on that conductor. Simples (reference to meerkat advert http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBu0OtC6m9g). It has been a very long time since I have done anything like this (way back in school all those years ago) so please stick with me on this one. If I remember right the principal theory is that 1. The higher number of conductors (or loops in the coil) that passes through the field lines causes the voltage to be higher. 2. The stronger the magnetic flux the higher the current production within the conductors. This is a bit basic to some of you I am sure but I still need to get it out to confirm my thoughts. If this is wrong please correct me, as the title says, an expert is needed lol The bar magnet field lines project from the N end and loop back to the S end in this fashion Image 1 Putting two bar magnets together with N and S facing gives a field pattern like this Image 2 Now this is where I need the most help with. Toroidal magnets produce a different field pattern, and as far as I can make out from the internet it looks like this Image 3 & 4 What I want to know is what happens when you put two toroidal magnets on top of each other, what happens to the field lines then. I have thought that there are a few possibilities on this, the first is that the circular lines will extend to encompass both magnets creating like an hour glass formation in the cross section. The second is that field lines will combine/intermingle between the magnets and create a figure 8 pattern. In either of the two possibilities the field strength will be increased to what could be considered a focal point between the two magnets. So with the technical thoughts out of the way and progressing on the assumption that I am correct so far my thought of a high powered dynamo is this. A central shaft that is spun by wind or other means, attached to this shaft are disks like platters on a hard drive, attached to those platters are the toroidal magnets. The magnets are aligned and spaced to give maximum condensing of the field lines between the upper and lower platter. In the centre of the two (or more) platters is a fixed platter, not attached to the shaft and is stationary. On this stationary platter are the coils, fixed into position. Image 5 The coils are shaped and could be something like the voice coils out of a hard drive, which would be good as they would determine the size of the platters, being key stone shaped they will fit together to make a ring of coils. Image 6 The whole idea is based upon the maximising and focusing of the field lines from the magnets to a point producing the maximum amount of energy as the coils pass through the lines. I also think that due to the shaft being turned having little resistance or weight that even small amounts of wind energy would be able to turn it to produce the desired outcome. Now this is where I ask you all to comment and take my thoughts to bits where I have assumed things that are wrong. I have no problems being told where I am wrong as long as it is not in a nasty way. Frictionless generator for a bicycle? Answered

 Right now I have a 12 volt 5 amp Werker lead acid battery powering lights, cell chargers, gps, and a few other gadgets.  When I go on long trips I take the batter charger with me to charge the battery with a wall charger.  The wall charger is heavy and unnecessary if i could find a way to harness the power I generate when I pedal.   i have seen plenty of generators which generate electricity by physically touching a dynamo to the tire but there must be a way to do it inductively, with no friction.  What if I covered the wheel with hard drive magnets and ran them all past a coil on the frame?  I know magnets going past coils will make electricity but not about rectifiers and capacitors and etc.  How could I make this? I am building an electric generator similar to one found on a wind turbine.  It will be turned by a number of things; the main purpose is just to generate electricity.  I need to know what type of magnets to use with the coils, should I go for one with greater pull force of more gauss on the surface field?  What other specs should I take note of?  Any help would be appreciated!

Small generators.

Most everyone here knows (I assume) how the generators work in RC cars and there's an instructable that shows it can be used to output electricity. Elementary science at it's best. If any of you have took them apart you'd notice it draws eletricity from touching the center metal pole. Two little brush/copper/zinic contacts. Basically I've been trying to think of ways to extract eletricity without having a need for them. They cause friction. Uh-oh, a few lightbulbs lit up in peoples minds by now and they're going "oh no not another person trying to beat the laws of thermodynamics and acheive perpetual motion" Yep. As we all know eletricity CAN jump if it's powerful enough and arc, but this doesn't make it too safe either. However it's a small scale model to start out and can be contained so the arc won't be a problem. My other problem is the calculations. They need to be precise. To get it working I need a low rpm generator that will generate high output. For this it requires torque which kinda kicks me, it will also need to use (I assume) rare earth magnets. So basically lets stick with my latter problem since it's more down to earth. I need a fairly small generator if possible (It can be larger if no other solutions are present) At least the size of a walnut I don't plan to make anything immense in size as I lack the funding. As pointed, small is key. Not to be redundant but to paint a clearer picture. It will also need to generate decent voltage at a low rpm speed. I cannot emphasis this enough because it's one of the key parts to make my idea function. Hum... Yeah that about covers it. So if any tech wiz's are out there that know of such thing I'd apperecaite it if you'd part the knowledge to me :P I'm also very aware that perpetual motion is eh, impossible... by current standards. The intention of this project is to deepen my knowledge and figure out why things won't work, figure out solutions and on so forth. A learning project for now and perhaps one day it might become something far more awesome.

Need assistance with an electromagnet? Answered

Hi, let's say i have a permanent magnet and an electromagnet The permanent magnet is strong probably 50-100mt, the electromagnet is week less than 10mt, (the electromagnet being just a loop of wire, nothing inside, just air) I need the electromagnet to capture all the lines of the magnetic field of the permanent magnet and thus make my electromagnet  stronger, They can be placed at a distence of 3-5mm from each other I can isolate them and put them in an environement where once activated the electromagnet would offer to the permanenet magnet a path of least magnetic reluctance Since the electromagnet is weaker (and probably has less magnetic lines) will it still be able to capture all the  lines and strength of the permanent magnet and direct it with almost no losses to the other end of the electromagnet (cause the electromagnet is quite long ) How much weaker can it be untill it becomes useless in capture and directing the entire field of the PM (10 times, 100 times)? Any advice? Thank you in advance for your assistance

How would I build an electric generator with variable torque? It's my understanding that P=T*rpm, but that T is const.

I am interested in retrofitting a spiinner bike to produce electricity. The spinner currently uses brake pads to adjust the resistance. There is plenty of energy being 'lost' in the form of heat due to the brakes. I would like to be able to adjust the resistance of the bike without losing energy in the form of heat. I understand that gears are a possibility, but I would prefer to be able to adjust the resistance in a continuous manner. Any ideas? I've considered a CVT (continuous variable transmission) design, but this would be quite difficult. I've aslo wondered if the relative motion of a disk with permanent magnets to a disk of stationary coils would vary the resistance. I'm not sure what the range of variation would be however. Any suggestions or insights you might be able to offer would be much appreciated. Thank you.

When I see generator construction they usually suggest 1 stator and 2 rotors.

Most show 1 set of coils with magnets on a disc on each side. How would 1 rotor ( with magnets ) and stators ( with coils on ) either side of it compare? Just to be clear the magnets rotate.

Hello there instuctables, I need your help with a project i am attempting, i am in the process of making a maglev tram and i have a couple questions i need help with? 1. I have a simple circuit for a linear motor that i understand to the most part but i need help with finding an electromagnet to use / make, it needs to run on batteries and obviously the main concern here is weight and stability so the smaller the better but still needs to be strong enough to propel the tram along the track so i suppose my real question is what ammount of winding, resistance and core material would be suitable for whatever voltage i could provide! 2. Next i suppose what way round should i place the magnets, should i place many electromagnets on the rail with sensorsand permanent magnets on the tram, or should i have a powered electromagnet on the tram and permanent magnets on the track? 3. Also what hall sensor should i use to detect the magnetic fields, unipolar switches or ratiometric sensors? 4. And finally control, how would i control the motion of the tram i.e. speed and direction? Id like to thank you all in advance for any help you could provide and i hope my description is accurate enough!! many regards, Scott Photo of simple linear motor circuit (img.1) When the hall sensor (switch) senses a pole of a magnet, it activates the transistor, in turn magnetising the relay and causing the current in the electromagnet (motor) to run one direction, then as the opposite pole is detected the relay de-magnetises and reverses the current thus reversing the pole on the electromagnet! This is designed so that with permanent magnets on the track in an alternating fashion of poles (nsnsns) the tram is either pushed or pulled along the track!

I need help with the placement of my magnets, and how to connect my coils? I plan on using nine coils?

This is my first build and I am still unclear on a few steps. Mostly how many magnets and placement, and how to wire my coils together. I plan on winding 9 coils for a three phase design and I have up to 20 ferrite magnets to use. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

can super caps be used with rotating magnet to form generator?

Rotate cylindrical magnetic bar over circular super cap as it's or short her 2 internal plate (hopefully if we can) to act like one flat ribbon coil nano wire made of carbon instead of copper. nano tech also should be implemented in small medium even large motor/generator and I think it would yield generator with high efficiency low weight and size with minimized edde current and inertia. NOTE ultra caps does not sold in our local electronic store here in damascus syria , if it was i would bought it's and experiment making generator using magnet and super caps and post the result thank you all for your time reading my question :)

Lego Electricity Generator

Now i was cleaning up my room and found this lego generator. So i opened up the lego block and got the generator.I don't know any of the specs for it, and don't have a multimeter or something handy to test the out put.I assume the black thing is the capacitor, it has this written on it:15BC437Some is hidden against the casing of the generator.What's the point of the magnet i move around in the video?Well aswell as helping me with that is there anything i could use this for?Video:Pictures:(Which is side is + and - ?)
