A personal record.

First of the month plus a Saturday plus a day to myself = sixty-nine species in 11 hours. That's a personal best (previous personal best = 73 species in two days). I'm wrecked, but pleased. If you're interested in the full list, check here. I think my favourite of the day was the Little Tern.

Live Person Please?

I have submitted for password retreival several times over the last 2 weeks. I never receive the email. No, I do not have a spam box. I found my password but I suspect it get's changed when one submits a retreival form since I still can not log in. So, now, I had to create a new account just to be able to post this! All I want now is for some real person (erm... no fake ppl please) to email me and help me be able to log in with my real account. I'd like to remove this account. Oh no, I hope that is possible too. Anyone working for Instructables want to email me so I can give you my other account's user id and email? So from there you can email that account a new password or whatever the procedure is? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease? *weeps*

Customizing/personalizing plastic?

Hello! I'm giving my girlfriend a GBA SP AGS-101 for her birthday for when she studies abroad so she has something to do on train rides. I'm hoping to make the gift a little more personal by customizing the housing! I'm re-shelling my SP with a new black shell. To customize it, I want to either create the signature Twin Peaks chevron pattern on the SP, or engrave/paint this symbol on the front somehow. Any tips on how to do this most effectively and permanently?

remote detection persons?

Hello everybody, I live in a very remote area and am looking for a radio guided detection to see/hear when somebody enters my property. Distance from one place to the other minimum 700 meters. I have power but no telephone connecion, nor internet or mobile sources. A simple PIR detector that indicates that somebody (burglars, robbers) enters my private territory. will do; I am desperate after three burglaries. I look forward to any suggestions.  Thank you! Personal Locator Beacon

Hi all I've recently learned about PLBs and EPIRB, which basically send distress signals with position information from the device built-in GPS. They can be relatively expensive, so I'm wondering if anyone has made any work towards a home-brew device? Legal Disclaimer: haha, homebrew is a poor term. These devices need to be registered etc., so it's not recommended ( and actually unsafe) to build your own device. What I'm looking for is education on how these things work and general pointers on how to approach the designing  of such a  device.

Ponoko - personal manufacturing platform

I was lucky enough to have David and Derek from Ponoko over to my house for Thanksgiving (all the way from New Zealand!). Ponoko is a personal manufacturing business, and is something I've been dreaming about for years. You can design a product, have it custom built using precision machines, like laser cutters, and if lots of people like it, they can buy it too. If you don't have access to a laser cutter, this is one of the best ways to see what you can do and try one out. For inspiration, you can check out How to make a laser cut lamp, which I encouraged them to post. It not only shows a cool lamp, but goes through the design process and using Ponoko's service. So, check out their service and tell us what you think. The Ponoko guys are here on Instructables, and would love to hear your feedback.

Personal fingerprint recognition doorbell

Anybody fancy making a fingerprint-reading doorbell, that gives out different rings/does different things depending on who it is? Maybe even with an option to ignore anybody whose print is not registered for the days when one is too murderous to deal with the general public? From scratch(ish), would be a waste to destroy an expensive security system just for this (maybe).

Making a personal game system

So everyone and their grandma has posted and made articles for how to make a "universal game system" that emulates the actual hardware of a console on something like a raspberry pi. But my question is this: is it plausible/possible to create your own, unique, personal gaming console? I mean something that doesn't emulate, but rather is an entirely different system (not an NES or Sega, it's a "You-console"!). I understand some criticisms for this: "Why re-invent the wheel? Or at least the console...", "This is too complicated...", "You're stupid" and etc. etc. My reasoning for this is this: Why not? Heck, what a niffty thing to have under your belt to say "Hey, I developed my own game system and make my own games for it! I'm cool!" So what do you guys think? Is it possible? Has someone done it? If not, you guys have any pointers on what to do? I'd like to do it, but I'm not too electronically edj-imukated. Maybe it'll be something I tackle in the future, but I'd like your input first! :)

Personal electronics theft prevention

My daughter is going into high school and has had her scientific calculator stolen for three years in a row at school. These are pricey, running from $30-$40 each. Besides that, all the other things in her pencil bag, like compasses, triangles, pens, mechanical pencils. Frankly, I'm sick of my daughter not being prepared for class and spending money for the reprobates to just steal it.  Is there any way to tag her calculator economically to track it down?

BooHoo Previous Comment Persons

Hello,  Reading some of instructables comments necessitates me to comment on you! I find Instructables as having interesting content which has appeal to a variety of people  regardless of their mental capacities.  Items portrayed on the site are creations of every class of people. Having a special talent, each of them feeling a little pride, bravely present their subject matter with instructions,  pictures, videos, FAQ, help? and their names are printed on the website. Speaking to the big shots who know it all.  This is not a specific website geared to the most intelligent humans like yourselves.  If it looks like a project for a 5 year old---it probably is! Clever mistake observers, nice of you to point it out.  Did you fail at the project?  Did you do something wrong?  If after you check yourself and it happens that you are right.  Why not have a little consideration, call or email Instructables, insuring the situation is clarified by the important people involved.  You would be saving the embarrassment, ridicule and self-esteem of an individual, or didn't you think of that? Instructables your website is unique, interesting, educational, subject matter is something about anything! The site has helped me babysit, fight boredom, release stress and laugh hysterically! Thank All of You at I.,  Amrie C

C.O.P. Suit: Personal Protest Wear

Whoever does a DIY version first i will bake cookies, seriously: C.O.P Suit was inspired by the COP15 climate summit. The brief was to propose solutions for, or to comment on, the ongoing climate debate – using wearable technology and design as a medium. The C.O.P Suit is an experiment in personal protest wear, designed to address the by now almost ritualised stand-offs between police and demonstrators – what has ironically been described as the ‘folk dance of disorder’. The suit is composed of an armored protection sleeve connected to a megaphone-mounted helmet, offering protection as well as the possibility of voicing commands, orders or simply generating noise. The suit is designed as a purposefully ambiguous and (slightly) ironic artifact, echoing the fetishistic visual language of protesters and police alike – a comment on the similarity of the means each side employs. The C.O.P suit is designed to be completely self-sustainable – utilising kinetic energy from common gestures in a protest situation (the fist thrust triumphantly into the air, the swinging of a baton or the force of a strike to the armor) to power the megaphone, making rioting hard on the ears, but easy on the conscience. I basically need a person detector. Sort of...

Some friends and I have been playing laser tag a lot recently, We try to team up in Free For All but always end up shooting each other due to darkness. I was wondering, is there any way (Cheap) To build something that each person can have, one person has a device that sends a signal to the other person when about 20 feet away, and on the other persons device, it would vibrate or buzz or something to indicate that the other person is coming. So basically when one person is 20 feet away, all other devices vibrate. One sender, and the rest receivers. And they would have to be pocket sized. Is there any way of doing this? My original plan was to use ElectroMagnetic Fields, one person has the detector, and the other, an EM Pump, But I could not find a pump design powerful enough for 20 foot range. Please Help! Thanks.

I see lots of patio umbrellas but no personal umbrellas.  There are MANY people who use umbrellas to block the sun.  It would be neat if you could create the umbrellas and then detattachable accessories like small fans, MP3 rechargers, simple air purifiers (with mask attachments for the paranoid...) etc.
