So, judging by what I've seen so far, a lot of people have a terrible concept as far as lockpicking goes. They don't know if it's legal, if it's really possible, etc. As such, let me begin by saying the very first thing you should do if you're interested in picking is go somewhere else. I don't intend to give you a full tutorial about how to pick. You can find that online in a lot of places. A good idea is to subscribe to a forum of experienced locksmiths and search there for a while. One I highly recommend is lockpicking101.com. Picking is a fun, albeit expensive hobby. It's also a living, or part of a living for a lot of people. I am not the devil for advocating lockpicking. Believe me, if someone wanted in your house to take your stuff or to cause you harm, they'd be more likely to go through a window than to take the time to pick a lock. I am not making the world any more, or less, secure with the information I post here. Owning picking tools is not illegal pretty much anywhere in the continental US, except maybe in Washington, D.C. Picking a lock you don't have a right to is illegal, and immoral, everywhere. It really can't be said enough: NEVER PICK A LOCK THAT DOESN'T BELONG TO YOU OR THAT YOU DON'T HAVE PERMISSION TO.

I need help making a lock pick set, i can NOT use paperclips, they don"t work for me. it needs to be INEXPENSIVE, i have seen many types, but it needs to be easy to make. the materials need to be objects that i can get from an average hard ware store, any suggestions?  Be SERIOUS!

Ok, so I'm getting a laptop and I'm not sure if one exists with what I want but if it doesn't fine I'll wait for it to exist.  The laptop must have a core i7 processor, blu-ray writer, 1920x1080 resolution, an HDTV tuner, and a backlit keyboard.  Here's what I've been looking at: Acer Aspire 8940g, HP dv8t and dv7t, Dell XPS 16.  So I'm just wondering if you can actually buy such a laptop I know Acer has said that they offer all these options but I can't find such a laptop anywhere on the internet.  Thanks for the help! And P.S. I don't want an Alienware laptop.

Say I have 3 LEDs in series that have a Max Forward Voltage of 6v and an operating current of 1000mA. I could get a driver like a buck puck, say the 3021-D-E-1000mA BuckPuck. It has an input voltage of 5 - 32v, and let's say I give it the full 32v, so how does that not end up burning out my LEDs? My actual goal is to have 3 strings of 6 Cree XP-e LEDs connected to 3 Drivers. But I can't quite figure out how to properly size the driver. I know it puts out a constant current, and the voltage fluctuates -- what is there to determine which one to get so I don't end up pushing too much voltage? Or am I misunderstanding something about how the voltage will fluctuate? Sorry for the noobishness, this is my first real electronics project.

You must have changed something because this always worked before. Starting with the Feb 11 emailed Newsletter and also evident in todays, the link for the initial Featured item works but all the ones below in "Editors Picks" do not function.    When mousing over the pictures, the link is displayed in Featured instructable, but not with the ones below. Advice on best how to make a piezometer out of readily available hardware store parts without use of any power tools and access to only a very few hand tools. Basically a piezometer is a clear, straight plastic tube that you attach to the outside of (in my case) a plastic 250 Liter rain barrel (about 1.5 feet diameter, 4 feet high) from top to bottom. The top is exposed to the open air, while the bottom feeds into the bottom of the barrel (by going through the side very close to the bottom). It needs to have a diameter of about 1/2 inch, be very solid, straight and secure, and a 'water level mark' must be etchable in it somehow to indicate the normal level of water inside the barrel when the barrel is full (full means a few inches before the absolute rim of the barrel). The barrel is filled with gravel at the bottom, sand on top, and enough room for a 12" waterhead above the sand. I'm using it as a slow sand filter (SSF). The idea is that the pressure of water at the bottom of the barrel fills the tube up to the watermark against the action of the atmospheric pressure forcing the level in the tube down below the watermark. When the level of the water in the tube is about 15 inches below the water mark, it means the water pressure at the bottom of the barrel has decreased to the point where the sand in it needs to be cleaned (no water getting through). Any ideas will be greatly rewarded in the afterlife. Thanks!

I'm in the process of trying to build a battery powered trailer mounted speaker system and i've got nearly all the parts now except for power switches. I didn't think i'd have a problem with choosing some but after searching around the vast majority of switches seem to be rated for AC or 12 or 24VDC and the absolute highest DC rating i've found so far is 28V, the problem is that the highest voltage i'm using is a little under 36VDC so where do i find appropriate switches? I've been getting helpful advice about the speaker project from someone on a forum called SpeakerPlans but they seem to think that i'd be fine using an on/off switch rated at 5A 12VDC despite the higher voltage requirements of my amplifier, i'm not very electronics literate but this doesn't make sense to me and i'm a bit worried about pushing too high a voltage through the switch and perhaps causing a fire or something. I would prefer a rotary switch if possible as i used one on my old 12V speaker and i found that it's a lot less likely to catch on clothes and bodies and break or accidentally turn on while the speaker is being manhandled/transported about. I have 2 circuits in my speaker setup, one is the 36V circuit powering the amplifier/speaker and the other is a 12V circuit powering a small mixer to boost the gain and tweak the sound, assuming i can find a switch capable of handling the 36V is it possible to have one switch that could be wired up to turn on both circuits at the same time?

In this instructable, an electric guitar pick-up is made by winding the wire around a magnet sandwiched between two small pieces of wood to keep the coil in place. If I were to replace the wood with steel discs, would it still work as a guitar pick-up?

Hi, the pushbutton switch in my coleman lamp is broken and I need a replacement. It's a push button with 2 leads. I don't know how to tell if its spdt, spst, or the other ones. How do I pick the right switch? Its rating says it is 5A/40A 250V. It stays in the on position until it its pushed again. I linked some pics on imageshack (couldn't get the uploader here to work.). My coil gun right now is using ten 330v 100uf flash capacitors from disposable cameras. They are being charged by the flash circuit on a camera. I am looking to upgrade the capacitors for more power and I wasn't sure which ones to get. I want the strongest ones that the flash circuit will be able to power. I bought a few cree XP-E LEDs and I'm very confused as to what drivers I should buy. This is my first electronic project so I'm a bit confused. I do know that for high powered LEDs, constant current is the only way to go but I have no idea how much I need. Hi, I am an hobbyist who likes to build stuff during my time off. Recently, a friend of mine have suggested that I build stuff out of waste products instead of trying to build things out of materials that are brand spanking new. This not only helps the environment, but I think could serve as a better inspiration than going out to shop for those things, as you never know what you might find in the trash. With that said, I am interested in visiting landfills and dumps as I think it would have the most materials in one place. However, the difficulty is that many companies do not like you looking around in there. I know of some scrappers who pick up things by driving around the local neighborhood, but I don't have the time for that during weekdays. Does anyone have any idea how I may visit a landfill to gather materials? Does anyone know of a convenient way to gather waste material to build their projects in general? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

After reading a lot of sites (and a few instructables *cough*westfw*cough*:) on microcontrollers, I want to finally buy one. the only thing though is I also need a development board and im stuck. Theres so many, I can't even begin to know which I should get.I was looking into the Z80 since I could buy a development board for 40$, which is pretty high for me (50 is around my max), and it also has a usb programmer, my laptop doesn't have a serial connection, but Im not so sure anymore. I know *some* c++ and I'm willing to learn c so I don't need a basic module or anything.Do you guys know of any good ones for me?

i want to buy a 29-37 (preferably 32) inch TV that has Internet Apps; (maybe 3D); at LEAST an 80,000:1 contrast ratio, (maybe 120 Hz or more, but I'm not very picky as long as there is no flicker on the image); and 1080p full HD. i found many models rounding at about $900 (without 3D, of course), little pricey huh?   my QUESTIONS: 1) picture-wise, what is the difference between "back-lit LED", and "edge lit LED" and is there any other technology i have not heard of yet (NOT including back projection of a projector)? 2) which would be the best choice LED, LCD, or Plasma, (of if cheap, small and light enough,      back projection DLP)?         (i don't really care about efficacy, but i do want one with a good lifespan; really bright colors     (like led or plasma) and good contrast, and has deep "black" blacks; hopefully 1080p, but     ill settle for 720p, less than 8 ms response time; has a great viewing angle; and last and     certainly not last, one that is under the $1600.00 price tag!) 3) whats the difference in the picture quality with edge-lit-LED and back lite-LED? I work with a company (whose name I will omit) that works in the field of picking locks and the like. I am trained and even paid to pick locks. I only recently picked up the hobby, with the job. I have a couple sets of picks. ~I don't need to know how to make picks~ There are plenty of instructables on that, on this site and elsewhere. What I would like to see are some decent pickgun instructables. I have seen some electric models online in various places, as well as some simple mechanic models, but have been unable to find either here. If anyone has built one, or plans to, please share the experience. I intend to get started soon on at least one of the projects in my head right now. So, I don't care if your pickgun is electric, manual, or magnetic-powered. I don't care if it opens car doors, deadbolts, padlocks, wafer locks, or warlocks. I just want to see what other people are up to.

Decided it would be a good idea to offer both sides of the discussion to the lockpick group. I'm hoping (fingers crossed here) that the community is capable of handling this entire group intelligently and maturely. As such, I figure pros and hobbyists alike can benefit not only from the opening and bypassing methods, but from more information about what's being done to prevent such things. All the information here is for educational purposes, and it helps me in my line of work to see what non-commercial solutions there may be. Also, with the shared knowledge here, it's possible we can come up with even better security options. Afterall, part of the job is getting in, another big part is keeping others out. *In my own opinion, the best security option anyone has is to install a decent security system. That way, even when the physical locks fail (I refuse to believe there is a lock that cannot be picked or bypassed), there is still an added security. Besides that, even having the alarm company's sign in your yard/window really is enough to deter most would-be intruders* So, feel free to post methods for getting in, or keeping others out.

Alright, so I know that I'm just 14, but hey! I don't think it's too early to think about college.Based on what I enjoy doing, I figure that my best bet would be to go into mechanical engineering. I thought about electrical and chemical engineering, but I am more of a hands-on kind of guy.Thing is, I want to go to a college that is in the SEC (Southeastern Conference). One, because I'd rather stay down South, and two, I'd like to stay fairly close to my family (i.e., not up North/out West).UA (Alabama) is the only one that offers courses in mechanical engineering. I'm not sure about other colleges, but because I am out-of-state, my education costs nearly $11,000 more than a resident of the state.Geez! I don't come from a rich family, so that seems a bit, extravagant.Now, I have and and have always had straight A's. I'm in the "advanced" classes, blah, blah, I participate in the Academic Bowl, blah, blah, ok. I'm fairly educated, so I'm sure a scholarship will come my way.In Georgia, we have the HOPE Scholarship, which will help fund students with high grades if they go to a Georgia college.I have yet to find a college in Georgia that offers courses in mechanical engineering. Hi! I wanted to ask if any one knows if the Tech contest grand prize winner with the best Radio controlled Ible will be picked by votes or by or by judges reviewing all the RC ibles? Because I have a very good Project that will be published within a few days but if  the one finalist for the grand prize is  picked by votes i really won't have enough time to make it? I have a weird problem: when I turn off my floor fan, my computer wakes up from standby. I have tried a different fan, similar problem happens, except when I turn on the fan. I have previously ignored this problem, but my computer started acting weird and eventually failed completely. I found a bunch of capacitors in my PSU are blown. I recapped and it's working again. What is causing the problem, and are there some fix? (not using a fan is not an option) My setup: outlet <- cheater plug <- power strip <- everything else                                                                      ^                                                             power strip <- fan The second power strip is used due to length constraints. Here at college dormitory each student only get one ungrounded socket, hence the cheater plug.

There's an older metal lathe that's going to the scrap yard, a reed-prentice co., looks to be from the 40's, and I could probably get it for scrap price. Would it be worth fixing up and using? I don't need to hit super-tight tolearances with it, just turning parts as a hobbyist / beginner. What questions should I ask about it? What should be there for it to be complete?
