Dishwasher spray arm: make/buy and attach to PVC

What I'm trying to accomplish: a usable dishwasher spray arm, that can attach to a PVC pipe, for reasonably cheap. I'm not against buying one, and I've looked at this one, which is snap-on, and this one, which has a nicer price but it's hard to tell how exactly it might work (or more likely, not work). I mean, how would you ever attach that to PVC? And the former is a little on the expensive side. I've also thought of making one out of PVC, since you could easily drill small holes in a piece of PVC pipe and stick them onto a T. But that has the problem of not being able to spin at all, much less spin on its own. I have searched long and hard and have not been able to find any sort of rotary union that would work (and I'm afraid even if I did, it may not allow free passage of water). A solution for spinning on its own may be as simple as making the pipes "bent," so the water would force it to spin as it goes around the corner. TL;DR: How can I make/buy a dishwasher spray arm that can attach to PVC (actually two of them)? And in case you're wondering, yes, this is for a dishwasher (DIY). Thanks for the help!

cleaning peeling black pipe?

Hi everyone, I finally got myself some black pipe for my project at a place where they would cut it for me. (No more EMT.) I have noticed that little bits of the black paint have come off (eg, at the place where I removed the pricing stickers) and that it is greasy all over (most probably from the pipe cutter I used at the store). I don't especially care about the condition of the paint, but want to be able to handle the pipe on a daily basis without getting greasy hands (or accumulating tiny fragments of paint all around my room and then ending up inhaling or eating them over the long term!). I guess that using water and soap on this will make it rust; how would you clean this? Thanks in advance for any advice! James

Rust in old water pipes? Answered

Problem: The house I moved in to still has galvanised steel pipes for all water connections. The rust and deposit build up is so bad that with a pressure nozzle on the garden hose I reach aroun 20m from the tap near the mater meter but only around 5m in the backyard. To make things worse these restrictions affect the hot water. If I open the hot water tap and then open a col water tap the hot slows and then the flow fully stopps. The landlord already stated he has no intentions of replacing the pipes at this stage as it is quite costly. The possible solution: I was thinking of flushing the system with oxalic or phosphoric acid to break down rust and deposits. The questions: Has anyone tried this and has some feedback on how good or bad it worked? Do I have to fill the entire system with the acid or is it enough to get a few liters in and hope it will spread/dilute through the system within 24 hours? Is it advisable to use a bucket and aquarium pump (probably something stronger) to circulate the acid through the pipes?

How to fasten galvanized pipes?

Hi there, I have a lot of galvanized conduit of various diameters that I found in a dumpster. I would very much like to know how to fasten one pipe to another so I can make stuff with it.Welding: I've read on instructables and elsewhere that you will become quite ill if you weld galvanized materials due to the evolved zinc fumes. Are respirators an option?Lap Joints: I thought of trying to make a lap joint by cutting out matching "half rings" from the pipes, overlaying them, and then bolting them through. I'm stuck as to how to make that cut though. I could do it in wood, it seems like metal would be trickier. Any thoughts?I'm being forced to move the pipe in a week or so; any off-the-cuff ideas would be fantastic, thanks!

Giant Mobile Pipe Organ!

Howdy! For those of you who've been around for a while you might remember me as one of Instructables' interns. I had the awesome privilege of being published in The Best of Instructables for my Guitar Hero controller hack. I'm currently working on a big project and would love your help. I've been nominated for an award through The Fun Theory. The proposal is to create a pipe organ, called the Anywhere Organ, in which each pipe is connected to an air supply via a flexible hose. This allows the pipes to be installed with special care and attention to any space, creating a unique instrument whose character is an aspect of that space. The system is devised around Processing with midi signals coming in from a keyboard and being sent out to an Arduino to control the pipes. A lot of the decision of what project gets the grant is your opinion and your votes. If you like the idea I'd love your support. Take a look at my proposal here. Vote for it with the little blue dots below the comments. They work just like the star rating system on Youtube. Thank you all for listening and have fun making. If this project goes through you know I'll be documenting all the cool stuff I discover here. Matthew Borgatt/bofthem/gianteye sinbox.org

PVC pipe at low temperatures

I have a question for spudgunners and other people who know about PVC. I've heard that PVC becomes bitter at low temperatures, so you shouldn't expose your spudgun to low temperature, but is it okay to leave it out in the cold and then warm it back up for use later? Does that affect the strength of the PVC? I have a problem storing some PVC in an heated environment during the winter.

What does osi stand for? Answered

As in, "a 16 osi blower delivers 400 cfm of air through a piping system..." I know that cfm is a way of writing cubic feet per minute. PSI is pounds per square inch. Building systems to move gases and liquids around safely has really had me stumped till now, especially when dealing with HVAC. I'm not familiar with some of these units.

The helper told me in confidence that we are not the only ones he does this too.....grrrrrrrr. Pictures have been updated with ones I took...

plumbing shelves?

Hi! I was watching a home show, "Beyond the Box," and there was a segment about an architect who build a wall-sized bookshelf out of heavy-duty plumbing pipes, wood planks and cable wire (the kind you see on staircases). I only got about a 20-second look at the thing, but it looks wonderful --very funky and industrial, but clean. I've never seen this before and would love to make one for my home office, but have no clue how to do it from that one video. Has anyone seen/built this sort of thing? Can anyone offer advice about how this might work? I'd be grateful for any help you can give. Thanks!

Kitchen sink won't drain, seems like there is an obstruction. Liquid drain cleaners have not worked.

This issue is with the left side of a double kitchen sink, which will not drain at all. The right side drains fine. We do not have a garbage disposal or dishwasher. What sturdy pipe is best for tent poles? Answered

I'm trying to build one of those old fashioned military style tents at a reasonable price.  I already have a bunch of recycled canvas for the walls but I don't know what kind of tent poles to use.  I think PVC is too flimsy and unstable, I'm not sure about electrical conduit because it isn't rated to withstand a lot of pressure but it is cheep, aluminum tubing is expensive but lightweight. Any Ideas?

Help Needed with Clogged Air Vent Drain Pipe and ? on Dishwasher Drain Pipe

I need help and learning how to remove, de-clog, etc. The picture is my kitchen sink drain area.  I have two-sink with the right side having a garbage disposal, with connecting pipes leading out.  But then, I have another pipe leading out in the same direction, but it serving as an air vent pipe.  There's a cooper pipe leading up and into the air vent pipe. Prior to taking the picture, my dishwasher's drainage pipe was connected to the bottom of the cooper pipe.  Well, last night I've noticed my sinks were clogged, I ran the garbage disposal, and then the a gush of garbage water came out of the under sink cabinet. Well, after a lot of cleaning, this morning I removed the drainage pipe from the sinks, and noticed that my air vent pipe was gushing out the garbage water. After searching the internet, it's rare to have a clogged air vent, but at the same time, no one seems to install the dishwasher drainage pipe into the air vent pipe. So my questions are: 1) Should my dishwasher drainage pipe be connected to the upper part of the garbage disposal?  (You can see there's a fitting on the disposal right above the white PVC pipe leading out of the disposal.) 2) Why would they (the original builders) install the dishwasher drain pipe into the air vent pipe? 3) Most importantly, how do I go about in unclogging the air vent pipe?  (It's all bonded together versus having a washers and nuts or a threaded union.) 4) Any answers and questions that I don't know what to ask?  Insights/suggestions? Please and thank you. v/r Bobby
