What happens when you take off the top of one of those plasma balls? What is the sciene behind them? Can you take off the plasitc dome and put it in a different case?

I'm thinking about creating an art project, but would need to submerge the glass part of a plasma ball in mineral oil (which I've heard is not conductive). Would this be dangerous?

So I have had my plasma ball for about a year now and it wasn't very clear anymore. At the top I noticed that there was some kind of coating on it after washing about 5 times with windex. The ball worked fine were there wans't coating anymore so I rubbed it all off, it was plastic and now my hands are all sparkly. Was that ok or am I risking major health problems. Also, what is it for. So also, if your plasma ball is murky this is why.

Hi I am thinking of using a Giant 3 litre Smirnoff vodka bottle as shown in the link below: http://www.licorea.com/smirnoff-3-litros-dosificador-p-809.html?language= To make a Plasma globe but inside the bottle. I need some sort of high voltage supply and an electrode but aren't sure what else . The main Problem I can see is creating a vacuum inside the bottle . as I don't have a vacuum pump. Does anyone have any tips on how to create a vacuum inside the bottle? Also would an inert gas work instead. Any help appreciated Thanks Ben

I just bought a cheap USB (5v) plasma ball. Quite frankly, the intensity of the streams is pathetic. You can barely see it when the lights are on. I wanted to use it for a decorative project, but need to increase the intensity of the streams. Would increasing the voltage (say from 5v to 12v) work? Or is it more complicated than that? I can do basic electronics, but mostly just simple stuff following circuit diagrams etc.

I'm trying to make a "tesla cane" (just a cane topped off with a working plasma sphere) for my cousin's steampunk-themed wedding. I already have a USB Plasma ball (Model is here: http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/science/964e/?), and I'd like to make it run off battery power. I'm good at soldering and dealing with small wires, but I've never measured voltage or anything like that. Advice? Has anyone attempted a project like this before? It seems like there are tons of "convert batteries to USB" tutorials but not many of the reverse. :)Thanks in advance!

I'm in the need of quite a few electronics for my new lightning tube project, on of them is a suitable HV transformer for high frequencies. Salvaging from plasma balls or similar is pointless as those transformers only get to around 3kV at best. With BW TV set getting really rare these days I decided to look into the modern version of the flyback transformer - the DST, Diode Split Transformer. If you ever did some Tesla stuff you will know that everyone says a modern flyback is no good as it only provides DC output. With basically no info on the net how these things look internally it was down to destorying a few until I got to know what to look out for andhow to remove the HV diodes between the secondary coil packs. I know not too many people will need a HV AC tranformer that can operate with several kHz so I though I ask first if it is worth to create an Instrucatable on this topic alone, otherwise I will just include a very short version of it with my Instrucable on the lighnig tube project. Have to say that is a quite messy and stinky procedure involving a lot of heat and the risk of burns to your fingers.

My project is to make a walking stick with a tesla ball at the top. I wish to power a plasma ball ( like this one http://www.amazon.com/USB-Plasma-Ball/dp/B0052GSQ8A ) with just two batteries. The whole minty usb charger seems like overkill and meant for smartphones. This is a simple device that runs on 5v and 350ma. But I could not find any instructables anywhere for this. I do not mind using 3 or 4 batteries if need be. Any link or suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advanced.

I am looking for information regarding the circuitry for a plasma globe. I was hoping to reproduce the circuit, but I need to know everything I can about the wiring. Diagrams are preferred. Instructions, links to instructables, and links to other websites are useful; and power/amp/voltage ratings would be great. If everything goes well, I might just be able to make an instructable out of it!

Can Flyback Transformer drive by Induction Oven? I thing Induction Oven can create 20kHz-40kHz. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Induction_cooking And Flyback Transformer need high frequency to work. I thing waveform is not a problem. I used plasma ball driver , CFL ballast driver and Halogen Transformer as my FBT driver . And work well.

Hi peeps! I was thinking the other day that I would LOVE to see one of those handmade copper bonsai trees (like these ones ) inside a plasma ball, with electricity arching across branches and so on. Either that or two of them side by side forming an electric Jacob's Ladder?? But I don't know how to make one. Does anyone want to make one - if possible - and show me? I have a neon light ballast and some time on my hands, I'd love to try this! Cha cha!

I'm looking for a vacuum pump for use with projects like the fusor included in make magazine, a laser tube, or a plasma ball. It doesn't need to move huge amounts of air, but nothing below 1.5 lpm. It also needs to have an ultimate vacuum of at most 25 microns. I have been unable to locate any pumps which meet these standards, all of them have ultimate vacuums of around 100 to 75 microns or are completely unlisted. Do any of you have some experience with these and some advice. I don't need something for pumping out heating/cooling units daily, just a very deep vacuum a couple times a month.
