Touch Tablet from a Pocket PC? Can a 7 inch display be added to a WM5 Pocket PC so as to make a touch display tablet?

I use a WM5 Dell AXIM X51 to read e-books and not much else. I use the PIM features and sometimes a spirited game of Bejeweled but that's about all. As I said it's 98% e-book using MobiPocket Reader. I don't want to blow $350 on a Kindle (an expensive black and white one trick pony) and I think e-ink is just a buzz word. I've already added a download of Wikipedia, put it in a cover that says "Don't Panic" and would like to take it to the next level. I mean, I can buy them refurbed for $98, why do I need a Kindle?

Net book from a Pocket PC. Would like to build a netbook with a 7 inch touchscreen from a WM device (Axim X51) Answered

I use a Dell Axim X51, running WM 5.0, with an SDIO WiFi g card and use it mostly to read books using MobiPocket software. I'm wondering if it's possible to graft on a 7 inch touchscreen and use it as an internet tablet. I don't really need a keyboard, although that would be a nice addition.

Creating a Cell Phone (Kangaroo PC + 4G LTE module + LCD Touchscreen)

Good afternoon, all! As the title sums up, I am looking at the Kangaroo PC [1], which is a $99 battery-powered pocket PC, about the size of a cell-phone, with a tablet processor and a full Windows 10 OS, and I'm asking myself one question. Why is this not a cell phone yet?! Basically, I want to install an LCD touchscreen, a 4G LTE module, and some software. This project is similar to Raspberry Pi cell phones, in the sense that it will be DIY, and the new Microsoft Lumia, in the sense that it hooks up to a monitor for desktop. Does anybody have any advice, or know what direction to point me in? I am specifically asking for help with the 4G LTE module and maybe the LCD Touchscreen. I'm not sure what to get, where to get them, or how to install them. (I've searched and found miniPCIe and m.2 modules, so far.) Thank you!! Trouble downloading my Instructable PDF

I have just published my first Instructable (https://www.instructables.com/id/Gorillapod-cradle-for-a-mobile-device-Pocket-PC-/) and I was trying to download a PDF copy to keep as a record. So I right-clicked the PDF link and selected "Saved Linked Content As..." in Opera 10.53. The save file dialog opened, but then my computer froze and I couldn't move my mouse. Every minute or so it executed my next command, so I pressed Escape and it closed the dialog about thirty seconds later. Then I tried opening the file in Opera, and a similar thing happened. Then, I opened Internet Explorer 8 (crumbs, must have been bad) and the same thing happened, except that I left it running for about five minutes and it eventually got there. I noticed that whenever the computer froze, the CPU usage went to about 99%. So it's not a browser thing. I had left the PDF options on defaults. Anybody else experiencing this problem?

Making the pipboy/hitchhikers guide

I've been thinking about this for quite some time, unfortunately I don't have the economy to purchase a mini PC/PC mobile, let alone one powerful enough and with enough space for all the things that I have in mind for this gadget. Though there seems to be a lot of other people on this forum with the cash and possibly the motivation to complete this so I'll try and explain the idea for you. If you've ever read 'The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy' by Douglas Adams or played the new or the old Fallout games you'll have noticed that the common denominator is that in both instances they have nifty little pocket computers with all kinds of information and gadgets. Now I realize that it will be overkill for most people to have a mini Geiger-counter, a gas measuring device and a light sensor attached to it, not to mention to expensive. But it seems odd to me that some of the software options available isn't already included in mini PC's, such as: -Wiki-taxi which is an offline version of the entire Wikipedia. -As many search-able dictionaries as is practical. -A general library of PDF's that you find useful depending on where you are/are going to go, or maybe the PC you get your hands on has enough space to encompass a general library for the entire world like information about herbs, plants and animals in every region of the world Instructables for certain kinds of gourmet dishes for an example could come in handy while traveling the world, anything goes really . -Furthermore it could have stored maps of the entire world, of course not in "hair counting quality" but good enough to find your way if lost, then again some of these mini PC's have GPS built in but you will still need all the map packs for the different regions of the world. -One could add how-to videos of different things that might come in handy if traveling in poor countries or simply backpacking, like braiding and general hand crafting items to have something to sell. Or guides for learning to play a certain instrument and so forth. And so on, there's an endless supply of software one could put on a gadget like this, but that's just half the idea. The other half would be constructing some kind of housing that would allow a person to strap the computer sideways on ones arm so that it's always easily available like a normal wristwatch and preferably protected against shock and moisture/water, furthermore it would be nice to have extra slots in the housing for such things as a small LED flashlight and any kinds of other tools that would be practical for the person in question that makes this thing. This computer would of course need to have a rather big battery capacity as well, and if it has long lasting batteries then several more of the batteries can be incorporated into the housing allowing the user to switch between each of the extra batteries when the original one in the PC runs dry. For off-the-grid travel I'd believe a sufficiently large fold-able solar panel would suffice to charge the device, maybe it could be incorporated into a jacket or simply stored as a liner in the jacket. Now I don't know if this is all easily understandable so if anyone has any questions or maybe someone would even make this then please let me know as this idea is quite dear to me, do post any ideas or complaints as well, I welcome it all. Oh, and in case someone might be bothered by the extra weight this would put on (say your left arm) then simply make another housing for general tools that you can have on the right arm/wrist and balance the weight out so that after a while you wont notice it as your muscles naturally adjusts to the weight, would basically make you stronger in the process.

How do I monitor a security system through the internet?

I am working on a basic security system based on discrete logic and was wondering if there was any way I could monitor the status of the system through the internet and possibly send messages to phones, computers, etc. through the internet when certain inputs went high, which would happen when the system was activated. For example, if a window was broken in the living room, is there a program or way to have my computer be connected to the system so that it would register that the input concerning the living room was at high (or activated) status, and send a text message or email to a phone or computer telling the recipient that a break-in had occurred in the living room? The basic way the system works is that the system will have outputs for each sector monitored, and, when the system is tripped in a sector, that sector's output goes high. I have heard about some microcontrollers marketed as "ethernet/internet appliances" from various places, and was wondering if I could use one of those? I also have an old iPAQ ( see my other pocket PC question for system specifications), and an old Dell computer with a Pentium 3 processor and Windows 98 that I have total free reign over, they are mine; is there any way I could use one of those? Thanks!

Anyone know their PDAs, Internet tablets?

Does anyone know much about modern PDAs or "internet tablets"?Background- like a complete eejit I managed to break the screen on the Guide, so after fuelling my fifteen minutes of internet fame it looks like being relegated to memento status. It occurs to me that for the 80 quid it would cost me to replace the hardware I could probably get a much more recent PDA or similar device and have more adventures with that. I'm not very familiar with this newfangled technology, however: the last PDA I owned before the Guide was a Psion series 3 and I always buy cheapo phones that don't double as internet browsers, games consoles or teasmades. Therefore I could use some help sifting through the wealth of devices available for one that meets my requirements. These, in rough order of importance, are:Browser availableCheap!Competent operating system, preferably Linux, preferably not WindowsExpansion card slot for readily available flash storage (CF, MMC, SD etc)Decent-sized touch screen or decent sized screen and QWERTY keyboardPocket sizedCan interface with a PC (running Linux) relatively easilyIsn't a phone, camera or mp3 playerThe only really important ones are the first four. From what I've seen the Nokia 770 seems to meet most of these. Sadly it only supports 2GB of flash storage on RS-MMC, but I can live with that- it seems small RS-MMC cards are so cheap that I could get several and have a multi-volume encyclopaedia :)Does anyone know any other devices that might fit this description, or can tell me more about the 770?

Homemade Gift Contest Winners

Congratulations to everyone who entered the Homemade Gifts contest! Thanks to your efforts, the Christmas-Industrial complex was dealt a heavy blow this holiday season. I've gotten lots of future gifting ideas from these projects, and hope you have too. This year we gave all our cousins awesome laser-engraved water bottles (to practice for the third prizes!), but didn't get our act together in time to make gifts for the entire family. Next year we'll try to move even farther off the consumerist grid. Start thinking now, and you'll be ready for both the holidays and next year's gift contest!Check it out:First PrizeThese three projects win one of these tools: a Cuisinart 7c food processor, a Dremel 400-6/90 400 Series XPR Rotary Tool Kit, a Fluke 115 True-RMS Multimeter, or a Singer 1525 sewing machine.Give the gift of Robot Invasion by MrMunkiHard drive platter clock by albetchaMagnetic Rubik's Dice Cube by burzvingionSecond PrizeThese five projects win a Leatherman juice S2 pocket knives laser-engraved with the Instructables logo and the author's name.freehand glass etching by RobyntheslugLiterary Clock by mdhaworthJunk box flowers by photozzHome-made Sun Jar by cre8torTechnical Monster by redribboncrowSecond Prize prime! These five projects win handy Make Magazine Thomas J. June is "I Made It" Challenge Month! Win a Pro Membership!

Attention! This contest has ended. Thanks to all the winners and to all the people who make projects off of the site! June is "I Made It" Challenge Month! Every day in June, Instructables is giving away a 3 month pro membership to one lucky user who has made the project described in an Instructable, and posted a photo of their version in the comments or someone who has posted a slideshow of their version of an Instructable. Why?  Because authors love to see their creations given new life!  There's nothing better than seeing how someone else followed your Instructable and made something awesome.  And if you try out a project, this is a great way to share what worked for you, and what work-arounds or changes you made.  Instructables is all about sharing your knowledge, so we'd like to reward you for taking the extra effort to show everyone what you've done. How do I win? It's easy - we randomly pick one winner each day from "I Made It" comments left on original Instructables or slideshows posted around the site. Have you already posted your version of an Instructable in comments or in a slideshow?  Have you seen some really great examples someone else has posted?  Link it here to be sure we've got it on our list!  The challenge starts on June 1, so if you haven't already left an "I Made It!" comment or posted a slideshow, you've got more than a full month to make something from the site.  Linking to your version here isn't necessary, but means we won't accidentally miss it. I'll randomly pick one winner each day, and post the link here for you to check out.  If you win, we'll send your coupon via PM within a couple of days. Good luck and happy "I Made It" Challenge Month! USB charging and data transfer problems

I recently got some mobile phones given to repair the USB ports. You might know the problems claimed on faulty USB problems first hand: charging takes forever, device is not always recognised in Windows, data transfers are interrupted or the device disappears suddenly and without any reason from your explorer. Although a lot of devices can suffer from from those symptoms and will work fina after paying money for a new USB port I also discovered a totally different source for the problem. In my case the cables itself. It is obvious that you should try a different USB cable before going through the lengths of replacing a USB port, but: a) not all cables are the same even if they have the same connectors! Some cables contain resistors to regulate the max charging current, others simply have flimsy and hair thin wires inside, prone to breaking. b) not all chargers are the same either! For example Apple chargers provide a voltage on the data lines that in return tells the device how fast it can charge - totally against the USB standards but Apple claims it is fine because they don't use a USB connector on the device side... Why does my device get problems with the USB? Well, to be honest, I don't know as it is not my device ;) Joking aside I will narrow it down to wear and tear. Both the connection on the phone and inside the USB connector can and will wear down over time. With daily charges for power users it is obvious that at some stage one part has to fail. Having a spare, quality replacement cable at hand often helps to find the source of the problem. In my case I had the cables for the phones but also a brand new and with 5$ quite expensive cable to spare. Guess what? None of the supplied cables worked while my new cable performed perfectly with all "broken" phones. After checking the USB ports with good light and a magnifying glass I could see dust, dirt and worn contacts. For 3 of the 5 devices a decent cleaning with methylated spirit and a small brush fixed that issue, the other two will either need a proper new cable or a port replacement. What to do if I have USB problems? 1. Check on a different PC or for the charging use a different charger. 2. Try a different, if possible new cable. 3. Check and clean the USB port. Only if the above won't help at all you should consider that the port itself might be faulty! Is there something to prevent the repair? Yes: don't use your USB port too often ;) This means, you can use a QI charger (wireless) and for the data transfer WiFi, on Android Airdroid is a really good choice. Keep your device clean! This does not mean you are a filthy pig, but more that a phone with an uncovered port tends to collect dust and dirt over time. In your hand bag, pocket or car, it does not matter time will get unwanted stuff in there. If you want to keep your device happy use a cover that also covers the USB port. I checked all the above and think I need a new port - what are my options? If in warranty go the offical way. Out of warranty a repair shop will fix it fast, but not always at reasonable costs, depending on the device and labour involved. Some devices are easy, others require the display to be removed to acces the port electronics. Online tutorials on how to dismantle your device should be available and if you are good with sensitive stuff you can do the repair yourself. Some sellers of replacement ports not only include all the tools you need (watch out for this if you don't already have them) but also videos on how to do it. I hope this little info helps people to avoid high repair costs for no good reason.
