Portable 5.1?

Hey guys, I've got a set of 5.1 speakers from an old non functional home theater system that I'd like to make into something portable, maybe even able to play sound from an iPod or computer. However, I'm a complete newbie to sound equipment and wiring, so does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could go about that? I know I'm not going to keep the 5.1 effect, but just having a portable system with that kind of power behind it would be pretty cool. Thanks in advance.

Portable hydropower

Hi! I am in a senior in high school and am required to do a project as a part of my stem class. I am planning to make a portable hydropower power bank that someone could use when they're camping to charge their mobile devices. The problem is I don't know how to go about actually doing this. I was planning on making a small stator and rotor for my generator but after further research I found out that I could use a motor and a diode instead. Any help on which would be better would be greatly appreciated. I also am confused on what type of battery to use(it will be inside my device and will be the power bank for charging devices). I was planning on using a 5000 mAh, 5V lithium polymer battery, but am not sure where to buy one(If u just search 5000mah 5v battery, the responses come up with 3.7V.  I will also need at least 2 usb charging circuits. Honesty any guidance in what I should would be helpful. Thanks! If your looking for examples of this I would look up the blue-freedom portable hydropower.

Portable Drawing Easel

I designed a portable easel out of two pieces of luan (1/8" to 1/4" plywood).  I originally intended to sell them, but decided I didn't really enjoy making them in production levels.  The time vs. cost factor didn't really pan out. Either way, this is a design that might make an artist loved one happy.  It is fairly quick and easy and has a bit of style to it, I think. I added some molding at the bottom to act as a sort of pencil or brush holder.  Just some metal rings to hold the two pieces of wood together and a SWEEEEET woodburning on the front with my name--feel free to put someone else's name on yours! What you don't see in the photos is a leather strap with a small dowel at the end that fits into two notches--one for holding the two sides of the wood from splaying apart when it's in easel mode, and another for when you want to keep it closed for carrying it.

Portable change table

We are running in partnership with other agencies and the City of Toronto, Parks Forestry and Recreation an accessible swim program for people with physical disabilities. Many of our participants require that they change in a lying down position and thus require a "change table". At this point we are looking at two locations that require this. Challenges include storage as storage space is of high premium at the pools. It would have to be at a height that would be comfortable for the support staff. It should be wide enough to be able to turn a person on their side safely. Sturdy enough to be able to handle up to 350lbs safely. Should be folding (for storage), and have wheels that lock so it can be moved easily. We assume wood is the best material for this (or easiest to work with), but we are open to suggestions. It should also be long enough. We have not come with specific numbers (how many inches/cm wide or high e.g.). For this some of us involved in this program need to discuss the details. However, you may have some questions too, so if you let us know we can provide answers to your questions. A few years we purchased a portable massage table. However, it is not wide enough to accommodate some of our participants with being turned safely. Portable Work Space

Hello,  I have been kicking around this design for a portable work bench. My profession is product design however I am a DIYer by nature (mostly wood working, furniture and the occasional home renovation). I would always loose count of the number of trips I would make back and forth to my shop in the garage.I thought that a portable table that could fold into a hand truck would be a good solution to design, build and possibly sell. I have teamed up with a metal worker in the PA and we are considering crafting a few of these tables however I would like to ask the community if an idea like this was worth anything. If you are at all interested in something like this, could you please take this very short "yes/no" survey so that I could tally and see if there is enough interest in this idea. Also, could you please let me know what you think of this idea? If enough people think this is worth the time I will build a  few tables and post pics.  Survey Link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RX63VFQ Thanks, -S

Portable car stereo

While waiting at a red light, I noticed that inside of a FedEx truck, the driver had his own portable car stereo in the cab with him. It consisted of a wood box with three 3.5" Dia speakers on the side with the stereo (what looked like an older model) sticking out of the top of the box, vertically. I'm guessing he had it wired for a cigarette lighter adapter to power the unit and the box was held in place in the cab by bungee cords. It looked like a great way to recycle old car electronics, wished I'd thought of it when I had to drive cross-country in a Uhaul with only an am/fm radio.

Portable speaker project?

Hello I am looking to build a portable speaker with some old speakers I found around my house, powered with batteries. I want to know how much voltage my speakers need to work, on the speakers casing it says 5 watts and 4 ohms. Is there an equation I can use to find out what the voltage is of my speakers based on the watts and ohms level?  Based on my research it looks like I will need an audio amplifier, can you suggest a cheap and cost effective audio amplifier and leave the weblink on the comments.  Please keep the reply basic as in not a tech wizard lol thank you.

Ultralight Portable Greenhouse

I have always wanted to grow a dwarf fruit tree or tropical tree (10-15 ft tall), but living in a townhouse I don't have room to winter a tree indoors. I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of this being done for a single tree? Kind of like a "tree phonebooth" for winter, potentially with a heater run from my outdoor electrical outlet. Any thoughts on where to start? If we can get a theory together I will build it and post it.

Portable Homemade TV Answered

I built a TV from an old laptop screen and one of those LCD control boards you can get from eBay but I’m curious how to go about adding a battery to it to make it portable. So, my question is, how do I go about battery safety and how do I control charging and isolation? For example, if I plug the TV in because the battery is dead, do I just have a charging board between the input and battery and let the charging board take care of the rest? And the same question is applied to when the battery is at peak charge but I don’t want to use the battery just simply plugged in. The battery is a 12v 2A lipo and I don’t want any fires. I’ve thought about adding a switch to simplify things but that’s inconvenient and armature I could make a circuit that would cut off the flow when the battery is at peak I suppose but I’m not sure of the schematics or if that is the right approach. I’m good at building just not figuring this stuff out….

Portable Storage Drive

I have a Nikon D200 Digital SLR that uses a CompactFlash (Type I/II) MicroDrive and when I'm in the field I take lots of high resolution images that takes a long time to download through the USB port of a laptop. I would like to be able to just carry a self-contained portable hard drive (i.e. 2.5" hard drive in an enclosure) with it's own battery source and just be able to insert the MicroDrive to a card reader connected to the enclosure and download all the images of the MicroDrive without the use of a laptop. A commercial version already exist but they are very pricey like the Epson P-2000. Basically I want the same functionality of the Epson P-2000 but I want the option to use whatever size drive I choose. How much battery would I need to power a hard drive? Would I have to use some sort of circuitry to transfer the images from the MicroDrive to the hard drive with a push of a button? Does anybody already have any instructions on how to build this?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Tiny portable printer - Will pay

Hello everyone. I need someone to come up with the plans or the finished product of a really small portable printer around the size of a Galaxy SII (or iPhone) but twice the height (thickness) at most. It must be able to print on a strip of paper about 2-6cm wide. It must be able to print a dot-matrix like text. The size of the text must be somewhat adjustable. It must print ASCII characters and maybe some symbols. The line of text to be printed will look like this: ID0001||25AUG{}12:55 No need for paper feeding or anything. It should operate like: place the paper in the tray, press a button/buttons, remove the paper. The ink should last for at least ten prints before replacing and the device must have a rechargeable battery. I would prefer if you make an instructable out of it as well but it is not mandatory. If you can deliver kindly send me a private message here with your offer.

more powerful, portable amp

I was messing around with some op-amps, building variations of the CMoy amp, etc. But I became depressed quickly -- these ICs' data sheets say that at the safe maximum of 15 volts, they can only pump out around 1/4 watt of power on a single channel! Well, i have a full range driver that really needs more power to sound decent. I was wondering what the normal way of constructing an amp would be if I were looking for 5 to 10 watts of power. *edit*: i'm not looking to run this thing off of batteries... i'm sure at 10 watts, a couple of D cells would get drained rather quickly... I recently cracked open an old 4.1 computer sound system (by microlabs) and scrapped the 5 drivers (4 satellites and a 5 inch sub), two big 3700 uF caps, and two JRC4558D dual op-amp ICs from the amplifier. I read up on the JRC chip (actually, just the data sheet from the RC5448D, the texas instruments flavor, i guess the JRC is discontinued) and it seems that this thing only puts out a max of 200 mW per channel, and typically around 90 mW. Ok i know those speakers didn't get THAT loud without distortion, but i am CERTAIN it was more than 800 mW for those 4 satellites. I am a new computer engineering student, so i can understand the physics behind the electronics, but i am nowhere near the level to start reverse-engineering that amp board. So how did these speakers get driven so hard? THANKS for reading!!!!!

Making a portable turntable portable

Hello all, This question is definitely burning an I hope everyone can help out. I have a couple of portable turntables but only one is actually portable. They can all be plugged into the wall but only one can be powered by 6 "D" batteries. The mission is to convert/adapt one of the plug only ones to run off batteries. They are about AC 117v-120v/5.5w-6w. Is this as easy as soldering a + and - cable from a diy battery compartment to the circuit board. Or will something be needed in between the batteries and the board to make the power acceptable? Also how about adapting it to take a Li-Ion(or similar) battery that could charge when it's plugged in? This sounds like it would be more complicated though. Just getting one to run on batteries would be grand. Thanks for any and all info.
