Christmas presents (Or Kwanzaa/Hanukkah presents)

So now Christmas is here, and some of us already probably opened all of our gifts and joy. So now I want to know, what did you get? What was your favorite present? What did you get someone else?  Please, if you celebrate Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, you can still share what you received!   My favorite present would have to be my new (and first ever) Camera. Fuji Film A170. My second would have to be the "Dexter" third season dvd we got.  The gift I gave to my brother that I think he liked was a poster of some football player. Don't know who it is.  (Pictures soon)

Topic by Rock Soldier

What did you GIVE ?

There are a couple threads on "what did you get?" Here's one to talk about any gifts you managed to come up with that were particularly clever, cool, or well-received. I suppose the one I put the most effort into was the "day-runner planner" re-purposed into a sewing measurement and craft data book for my wife. I threw away the traditional calendar pages and added some downloaded and self-made special purpose pages...

Presentation on a 'How-To' Subject.

How excited I was, when my Public Speaking teacher handed out a prompt for our next presentation: "You must present to the class, a toutorial on how to make or do something" I was ecstatic, I thought this would be cake, its in the bag! But, here I am, struggling to find something to do, I have access to some of the best projects ever, but I can't just narrow it down to one! It must be made/presented in 7-10 minutes, to 30 seniors in high school. Would you mind suggesting something I can make, and demonstrate to my Public Speaking class? My thoughts were: www.instructables.com/id/Rubber-band-Powered-Butterfly/ www.instructables.com/id/Pocket-Graffiti-Pen/ Any more ideas?

Catch a Christmas Present.

From my inbox this afternoon: GEMINID METEOR SHOWER: This weekend, Earth will pass through a stream of debris from extinct comet 3200 Phaethon, source of the annual Geminid meteor shower. Forecasters expect more than 100 meteors per hour to fly out of the constellation Gemini when the shower peaks on Dec. 13th and 14th. For most observers, the best time to look will be from 10 pm local time on Sunday night to dawn on Monday morning. Visit http://spaceweather.com for photos, a sky map, and live audio from a meteor radar. Sounds like a chance to arrange a unique Christmas gift for a loved one. Update: I've done a bit more reading about the Geminids, and they may not be suitable for collection by magnets.  It seems they are the rocky remains of a dead comet, so lack metallic iron. However, I have added a map so you can work out where to look.

What to ask for in the letter to Santa Claus?

Everyone (and my brother) started writing letters to Santa. I thought I was too old for that, but my mum obviously wants me to write it, so I'm having deep thoughts on the topic.     What should I ask for? It has to be something fun, but not life-threatening, not very toxic and having a possibility to become mum-approved...    I've been thinking a smoke machine or a Geiger counter

A Carbon Tide: Past, Present and Future

The New York Times has a really nice graph showing the world's historical and projected carbon emissions here at A Carbon Tide: Past, Present and Future Global emissions of carbon dioxide, measured by the weight of carbon it contains.Their choice to display it in flash rather than a similarly-sized image is somewhat annoying, but the chart itself does a nice job presenting a type of data that is often difficult to comprehend. Getting people to truly grasp the size and scale of some of the world's energy issues is one of the key challenges in making progress on those issues. In 2004, 7.9 billion metric tons of carbon were released -- did you make good use of your metric ton? Here's a thought experiment in that same vein: The San Francisco oil spill was originally reported as a 140 gallon spill, but turned out to be approximately 58,000 gallons. How much worse is a 58,000 gallon spill compared to a 140 gallon spill?

SIx month anniversary present suggestions

I am in a long-distance relationship, and our six month anniversary is coming up. Does anyone have any gift suggestions? I am getting her a webcam, because she doesn't have one and we will be able to see each other. Also, I just recently sent her a bracelet (a souvenir from my vacation). So any other ideas that are preferably not jewelry and hopefully quite inexpensive are welcome.

Calling all Homeschoolers, Past and Present!

This is Labot, letting you know that so far I've survived the recession and still have broadband. However, we're experiencing budget cuts at my house, and one of those budget cuts could end up being my education!Well, I definitely do NOT want to go to any of the public schools around here, as they are supposedly awful. This leaves me with two options:Get a job and help pay to continue going to private school. I like my school so I wouldn't mind doing this.Start homeschooling next year and save money by NOT going to private school, therefore being able to afford a nicer house and maybe get my own room (our rent's almost up and we need a place to live), parents buy me a computer and possibly even a car. I like nice things so I wouldn't mind doing this. So, my dear homeschooled population of Instructables, how do you like homeschooling? What are the pros and cons? How does it compare to public school? Private school?

Please check your presentation before publishing it

Whilst it is unlikely that anyone can achieve perfect spelling and grammar, you are showing off your ingenuity for all the world to see, so you surely want to show how good you are? Also make sure your images are clear enough to illustrate whatever the point is.  I've just read two articles this morning, the first about "Metal-dipping" seed pods has crystal-clear images, but the other from American Pistol Crossbow Association offered under-exposed pictures in black-and-brown, captioned like this  "... thwe safty catch is behind the rear sight."  Their spelling, not mine. Come on Folks, let's all aim for a standard of presentation to be proud to show the grandchildren. Geoff

Advice on preparing/presenting a Python Master Class?

I am preparing a master class to present to a group of Technical Artists# at work. Everyone in the group has previously programmed in C/C++/MEL/MAXScript/Python. The purpose of the class is to collectively bring everyone's skill levels and technical understanding on variety of Computer Data Science topics to a common level.I would like some advice as this first time I've delivered such a class. I am planning on structuring the course to be two 2 hour sessions, with 30 minute blocks of content interspersed with Q&A;, code-review, and individual assistance. I know this a multi-part question, so don't feel you need to be able answer everything, just contribute what you can. Any links to articles, SO questions, or reflection on personal learning experiences is greatly appreciated. Questions/Advice/Links to Further Reading- What CS topics should I attempt to cover?- Examples of other Python training courses? - What do you wish someone taught you when you first started programming?- Python programming best-practices- Tips for delivering technical content to creative/artist audience? Using Dive Into Python as a textbook and referencing the MIT Open Courseware Introduction to Computer Science on Academic Earth. I have also been given a 2 minute overview on adult training (Malcolm Knowles), i.e., working the students through the cycle of: identify the problem, determine the cause, researching a solution, and applying.
