Print Circuit Boards with Squink

From kick starter page: Create circuit boards in minutes, from home, at the cost of a cup of coffee - Squink prints conductive ink and assembles your circuit. Atmel had posted about a new device called "Squink". What it does is print a circuit board on paper (or anything flat like glass), applies conductive glue to the contacts, and automatically places your components on the board for you! They have a kick starter here:  https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/botfactory/squink-the-personal-electronic-circuit-factory but I am 13 and cannot fund it. I believe this device will be found in the home of makers all over, and I think spreading the word will help these people. So please head to the page and fund/share the word!

Printed Circuit Board Help...

P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; } Okay I found this circuit that about Attack and Decay but I have no idea what it is...after research, I think its a effects pedal...(leave a comment if I'm wrong.)  So, it is complex so I want to make this into a circuit board but am not too good so some help would be appreciated.   Can anybody help??? Thanks in advance. Make sure you read my image notes. They are very critical to the design...I think.

Why is the circuit so squiggly? Answered

Hi all, Something that's been bothering me for years (I clearly have no life)... Why are traces on  printed circuit boards sometimes very squiggly, when there's an obvious shorter, straighter path. I've attached a picture of a PC RAM card that shows what I mean. Thanks!

Looking for pre-printed circuit boards

I've been looking around the web trying to find a place that sells ready made circuit boards, plated and pre-drilled; like what you would find in Radio Shack but with a larger selection. I've looked at Mouser and their selection is rather limited. What I need is a circuit board about 1" square for mounting tactile buttons on it.  Like I said I've been looking all over and all I can find are websites that make custom circuit boards, but nothing already made. So anyone know of a place where I can buy already made circuit boards?

Circuit Board Help

I have a Sony hcd-fx10 dvd home theater system, and one day I turned it on and it went into protect mode. I contacted Sony and they said it needs to be serviced. I found a service manual online and took the unit apart. I consider myself handy, so this was not a problem. Upon further investigation and with use of the service manual, i found a brown burn mark on the bottom of the motherboard, which corralates to the protection detection module on the board; which is my prblem. My question is, Can I simply remove this module, or does it need to be replaced with a new one or something similar? I don't know much about circuitboards but have some skill at soldering. Attached are pictures, the best I could get of the small board, showing the actual module on the board and the burn mark on the bottom of the board. Any info would be great. Thanks.

cutting in circuit board?

I have this circuit board which I pulled from an iPhone dock. When I look at the bottom, it seems obvious where the wires and connections are running. Does this mean that the area marked in the photo below is fair play for cutting and removing without effecting the functionality of the circuit board? The project I'm working on would greatly benefit from being able to remove a small part of the plastic.

Help with Circuit Board

The effect light below is supposed to sequence the lights on and off, one at a time, in response to music (sound). Well it does that, but not until the input is around 95 - 100 DBs. I'm trying to figure out what to replace so that it responds to sounds at lower DB levels. The left knob on the rear is for sound adjustment (worthless at this point), the right knob is the chase (sequence)speed. The sound is set to max and the lights still doesn't respond until you really crank the music up. CN2 is where the sound and chase controls connect. It's wired, left to right as follows 1 - red from chase knob 2 - yellow from chase knob 3 - red from sound knob 4 - yellow from sound knob 5 - blue from sound knob The pin block in front of CN2 is power and the other block goes to LEDs on the rear of the unit. I'm trying to figure out what I can replace to make this more sensitive to sound input. The mic isn't the issue, I've tried several and even directly wired headphone input into it and still had to crank it up before it would respond. No comments on my soldering butcher job on the back. The red wire is the positive to the mic (which should be in the burned out hole to the left, but it works there - no better, but no worse) Any thoughts at all on what I could play with to make this thing respond to sound a lower levels would be greatly appreciated.

PCB etching left over paper

Hey everyone! I'm in the process of etching my first PCB. I have a few questions. I'm using the toner transfer method, with hydrochloric acid and a little hydrogen peroxide as an etchant. Anyway, I transferred the toner to the board, but I believe the glossy paper I used may have been a little too thick. The toner transferred correctly, but i can manage to get all of the paper off. I've tried a tooth brush and a soft towel. My question is, if I just go forth and etch the board will the paper dissolve with the copper on the board and give me a clean result anyway? Will the copper covered by the paper not be removed? are there any cons to this? (such as not being able to reuse my etchant) Thank you all, your help is appreciated Ken

Printing a circuit on clear plastic?

Hi Guys Inside most modern keyboards, you find a rubber membrane that presses a sandwich of three layers of plastic, with the upper and lower parts having circuits on them that make the contact. Is it possible to 'print' this type of circuit at home on standard laser or inkjet printers?  I could use Amanda's method with bare conductive ink, but printing would be better. Any info appreciated ;)

Making printed circuit boards without laser printer? Answered

I am into electronics, but have had to use pre made PC boards. there is nothing wrong with this, but it can sometimes be inconvenient, and more difficult when the time comes to put the circuit board together. I have seen instructables on how to make custom printed circuit boards, but they all used laser printers. I do not own a laser printer, and cannot really afford to buy one. Is there a way to etch boards without a laser printer, and if so how?

Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction! Phillip

Adding Capacitors to a circuit board

I have a circuit board I made, very simple, you connect a 9 volt battery to it, power opens a relay, and turns on a green led, there is a zener diode (6.1v maybe, cant remember) for a flashing red led, the led flashes if the voltage drops below the voltage of the zener diode.  My questions are; 1.) If I add capacitors to this, will it extend battery life (about 4 hours right now) 2.) If 1 is yes, what kind of capacitor will I use? I work with capacitors every day, but bigger ones like 5mf 330V, 35mf 440v, dont know much about the smaller ones. 3.) If you can make something better, please let me know, it needs a power light, a low battery light, and a relay (SPDT, 9 volt battery is on the coils to keep relay open). Ideally I would like this board to have a long battery life.  Any help would be great.

Instructable on electroplated circuit boards?

I managed to plate a copper trace onto piece of acryllic today, to test out a process for easily and cheaply making (and possibly editing/repairing) custom PCBs. The adhesion appears to be good for surface preparation used so far, and a nice thick track has formed. So, would it be worth uploading an instructable once the process has been refined a little (or enough to make simple boards properly)? Any questions, feedback or comments would be appreciated.

Circuit board heat Trouble. Answered

Full disclaimer, I am still learning and at my current skill level I am essentially following a picture book showing how to hammer a nail then emulating it, Hope that analogy paints the picture correctly. Now for the problem! I have embarked on a journey of growth and learning, in said adventure I took a personal challenge of building something and hopefully learning in the process. Needless to say I did learn, some lessons more painfully than others (soldering Irons are HOT *Sigh*) but I am at an impasse. You should see attached (hopefully) one schematic and two photos. The schematic correlates to the board of course. The next two are of the silkscreen on the board (empty) and the board upon "completion". If you notice in the empty board photo I have drawn your attention to a specific area, the area in question. In this area there seems, during testing, a decent amount of heat build up. Now this may be normal, I do not know. The device calls for the use of three Protected 18650 Lithium Batteries (3.7V I believe). I attempted to do a continuity test with what I thought was under voltage, in hindsight, I'm not sure whether the power cells are in series or parallel so perhaps I was not under? anywho that is when I noticed the heat in that area. I hope I have illustrated my predicament enough for a solid enough understanding, If not I apologize. Please ask any information you require.

Extremely simple printed circuits

I was thinking of this theoretical circuit making system. I would get some sort of powdered or granular metal (possibly lead) and mix it with small amounts of water. Then I would fill the paste in an ink jet printer. Then I think it's as simple as just printing out the circuit. Maybe you would have to bake the print or maybe put it in a kiln to let the metal melt together.

Theremin Circuit?

Does anybody have a theremin circuit that doesn't have coils? I need it to be compact so programming seems ideal. A PIC solution might work...any suggestions? Any other processor is fine also. No, I can't use a light theremin... And no, I can't use Harrison Instruments' because its too big and too many connections. If possible, then this is to be used on fruit flies to see how much activity they do when foreign substances are added. Again, if possible if a PIC solution is used, then can the PIC detect when the flies move because they change an oscillation. Most likely I will wind a coil and place it in the jar and then have it detect. The best way would be to use the PIC to print an output via some sort of display so that the scientific results can be tested.

Of solder and circuits

To dodge an onslaught of summer boredom, I'd like to fart around with small scale electronics projects (LEDs, maybe a circuit board, etc.). I hope that by the time I finish farting around, I would have something nifty to post on this website. Unfortunately, I have little practical knowledge of this stuff (other than what I learned five years ago in high school electronics). I mean, I don't even know how one technically refers to "this stuff." Can anyone recommend some good books or a general method of wetting one's feet before jumping into the pond? Highly technical sources are obviously beyond me at this point, so I'm looking for introductory-level information that can be flexibly applied to whatever bizarre project pops into my mind on Friday afternoon.
