I know this uC can be clocked this high, so what's the problem? thanks

Vertigo Lights

A few years ago I was attending a Halloween attraction where a conversation started about seeing a red skull.  We asked a few of the actors and I got the name of the attraction's special effects person.  What we were seeing was a programmable sheet of red LEDs that would flash so fast that you could only see the after image.  The F/X guy called it Vertigo Lights.  I understand the concept, but wondered if anyone has come across anything like this.  Could this be controlled by an arduino, or would a program need to be written to control all of the lights simultaneously?  I haven't been able to find anything like it in any of my searches. Any clues would be great!

Are there any common timers that are programmable to the second? (my sprinkler timer is programmable only to the minute)

We are using a sprinkler timer to automate the opening and closing of a ball valve by linear actuator. The problem is the sprinkler timer is only programmable to the minute, so it opens, lets water flow for a minute, and then closes. This wastes water as we only need to empy the tank for 10-ish seconds. Any timers that are programmable to the second?

Battery Powered Programmable LED Sign

Hi all! I am working on building a sign to hold up at a concert I'm going to in a couple months, and I really want it to stand out!  To preface: I am very technically inclined but know very little about powering LEDs (have only done basic diode and battery combos) and have zero programming experience, but am a quick study.  What I am looking for is a solution that can be mounted on a 20x30" corrugated plastic panel, and run via battery pack with enough juice to last a 4+ hour concert. I know that one can easily buy battery powered LED strips, which I'd mount in an array on the plastic, but I'd really like to ideally be able to control the lights colors and show different bits of text, possibly via an iOS app.  I know this might sound quite ambitious but as my dad always likes to say, go big or go home! Anyone have any ideas where I can get started? Thanks in advance :)

starting circuit for programmable sequence, for flashing LED?

Hi- I am interested in suggestions for starting points to build a programable flashing LED.  The intervals of dark/light should be configurable, kind of like morse code.  But not subject to what I recall as requirements for Morse- dashes are 2x as long as dots, or something- duration will vary for both.  Maximum total length of sequence is 10 seconds. There are a lot of flashing LED circuit Instructables, some very old and referencing 7 yr old chips- unsure if I can get those chips. In an ideal world, when I am done, I could have multiple EEPROMs that I could switch out to configure the flash sequence I wish.  One sequence per EEPROM.  Or another means to accomplish this. My background:  I can solder a little, I can program and shell script a little, I have not much idea about electronics at all. Thank you for pointers to a jumping-off spot for me!

Schematics, Help Please

Hello, I'm trying to create a simple timer that sets off a device after a set amount of time. I'm using a schematic from a basic electronics book that my grandfather had given me a few years ago. And it seems simple enough to the point where I can understand how it works. But I just can't seem to figure out how to actually put it down on a breadboard to even test it. So if you could possibly help me find out how to place this down on a breadboard to at least test, I thank you very very much. -The picture of the schematic should be below.

PIC Programmer Com Port?

Hello, yesterday, I bought a PIC16F877A Microcontroller and This programmer. I also installed PicPro USB. I am using the serial to usb cable that came with it. The programmer has a location of  Port_#0001.Hub_#0009 in device manager. Now when I open PicPro USB and set it to  port 1, It gives me an error saying: There appears to be a problem accessing the COM port. I cant seem to find whats wrong. [Edit] I think that It is connected to port 24 (hence its name: Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM24) ) and the problem with PicPro USB is that it can only have 1 digit port numbers, how do I fix that? Thanks.

Securing programmable IC chips Answered

I've just started playing with Arduino boards and programming and I am curious about firmware or downloading a program to a chip upon completion so the project remains so I can keep it intact after I remove the Arduino interface. Can you buy inexpensive chips and download a program to the chip with all the instructions on it so I don't have to leave the Arduino board connected to it. I've heard there are inexpensive one time chips that you can download too and that's pretty much it. Once the program is in, its in and you can't reprogram it again so my questions are this 1) can this be done? 2) does anyone have an Instructable for a project that uses this, and finally, where can I get such programmable chips? Any assistance or advise is most appreciated.

Core Wars: The battle of the programmers.

Okay, brace yourself for a lengthy background story: In the 1960's and 70's, computers were much too expensive for a normal person to have one all to themselves. Before the invention of the Personal Computer (PC), computer systems were mainly employed in large universities, able to be used by students. However, there came a danger with all this: Back then, there was no such thing as protected memory, meaning that someone with minor hacking skills and some knowledge of assembly could easily wreak havoc on other people's data and programs. One such urban legend is that of a major business firm's main computer system, which a mischievous employee had installed his own assembly program called creeper, who's only purpose was to create copies of itself whenever it was run. This soon became a problem, as the creeper virus began eating up precious space in the memory and began corrupting other people's data and programs. After a while, another more brightly-hatted programmer created a program called reaper, which would make numerous copies of itself and destroy any creeper virii it could find and then self-destruct. Soon enough, things were back to normal. After hearing this story, a programmer named A.K. Dewdney got the idea for a game which he called "Core Wars". In this game, people would write computer programs called "warriors" in an assembly language called Redcode. Redcode had instructions not out of the ordinary of any assembly language. These programs were then run simultaneously in a simulated computer called MARS. The aim of the game was to make the opposing program crash by forcing it to execute an illegal command in the computer's shared memory. The surviving program was declared the winner. The absolute simplest warrior was called imp, and was written by Dewdney: MOV 0, 1 The MOV command moves copies a command from one place to another, in a position relative to the MOV command. Because of this, the imp would fill up the entire memory with MOV commands in a relatively short amount of time. Because the memory loops around (So, if the size of the memory is 8000 commands, then command 8001 would be executed as command 0) then it meant imp would always hit it's target eventually if it wasn't hit first. Another program which was written by Dewdney is called Dwarf: bomb      DAT 0,0 Dwarf     ADD #4,-1                 MOV bomb,@bomb                JMP Dwarf End Dwarf This is the first example of a "bomber" program. This program would drop DAT 0,0 (An illegal command) at every fourth slot in the memory in the hopes that the other program would accidentally execute it (cookie if you can figure out how it works). There are far other types of examples, like scanners, which try to scan the commands around it to see if they are illegal. Some programs can even repair themselves mid-battle. So, does anyone else still partake in this ancient game? I recently just got into it, writing my first warrior program a few days ago. Have no idea if it works, but it sounds pretty cool. It's based off of Dewdneys Dwarf but with a few modifications (I named it MindSplitter): bomb      SPL 1                 JMP -1                 DAT 0,0 Split        ADD #5,-1                 MOV bomb,@bomb                JMP Split End Split First off, this plants bombs at every fifth command instead of fourth, which I hope will help it spread out. Second, the bomb it uses is my personal invention that I call the Splitter bomb. In Redcode, the SPL command will jump execution to the specified command, while at the same time continue executing the commands after it. The idea is that the SPL will split to the jump command while the normal execution goes to the jump command, and both of them jump back to the SPL, therefore filling up all of the enemy programs processes. If the enemy program somehow manages to escape the loop, there is a deadly DAT after it. I haven't tried this out yet and I'm not sure how it would do in battle. If someone with a MARS emulator and a warrior of their own would like to put it to the test, I'd would absolutely love to hear how it turns out :).

Calling All Programmers (Yes, ALL)

Every now and then in typing class, our teacher will give us a handful of letters, and we're given about 5 minutes to come up with as many words as we can from these letters. So today I thought... what if there was a program where you could input a string of letters, and it would spit out as many words as possible that can be made out of those letters. A quick Google search was less than fruitful. So, to the more techier of my fellow Iblians, how would you go about writing a program that could do this? I'm thinking something where you input a string of letters, and then it scans, say, an online dictionary, to find as many words as possible from the inputted letters. Sound doable?

Programmers can you help me?

Programmer for an art project? I can give you an excellent opportunity to learn some things about insect detectors, and to challenge your creativity! I need a some help from a programmer/ technical person for my art project (immediately)- Short about the project: The Project is planned for the end exam exhibition at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, June/ July 2008, but might also be shown at later occasions. The work is an installation with video projections, machines and live insects. A box is located on the top of a pedestal. The box contains crane flies, which will be seen through a small window. The crane fly's movements are intercepted by sensors which translates the movements to commands for a machine. The walls in the room are covered by video projections. By means of wires, the machine can move around in the whole room. Technically what I need is: Through an actometer (insect movement detector) the electric impulses created by the movement of the insects, can be viewed in a software on a computer. What i need to do is to use the graph of movements in the software to send output commands to a machine (made by me, controlled by Remote controlls). I am not sure of how this can be done in the best way possible, but I have some suggestions which I can explain more precisely later on. I am looking for someone who have knowledge in terms of programming, and could be able to come up with a good solution, as well as maybe collaborating/ helping me out with my project. Please let me know if you are interested, know someone or know where I should go to meet the right people here in amsterdam. All answers are appreciated! Thank you in advance Andrea
