Programming compilers?

Hi guys! Well, I usually program using Microsoft's visual studio suite; however, I'm getting tired of my programs requiring the .net framework to run. Basically, I was wondering what compilers programmers use to write their programs. I really don't care what the language is, I have a fairly broad knowledge of programming languages, and I could always pick up another if need be. Anyway, could anyone point me out a few names of compilers? I would be very grateful. (Particularly if they were free) Thanks!

What is the programming language best suited to make small programs?

Hi, I've been wanting to learn a programming language for a while now, but I can't decide what language to learn. I have some experience in html and css, but web design is not the kind of code I want to learn. I want to make small programs, just to help with every-day use. I am currently using windows at the moment, but I might be making a switch to linux in the near future. I have been looking into VB, Python and Ruby, but I don't know what Python and Ruby are good at. Making small programs or web development. If there are any other languages that you thing I should look at please feel free to post them.

Programming a microcontroller?

Hi everyone I have got a MICROCHIP - PIC16F616 to play with, I am going to write a little program and load on it. However, I have a few questions before I do this. 1. How do I know whether language I should write? like C or Assembly? does it tell you in the datasheet (link above), because I don't seem to find it. 2. What kind of program do I need for loading the program into the chip? is it also an information I can find in the datasheet? or it is really some common sense between programmer. My supervisor doesn't offer much help... Extra question Here is the link of open programming, I am just curcious that if I build this programmer (I have one for my chip, but just wanna learn something), does it mean that I can use this to connect my microcontroller and my computer, so to load the program into the microcontroller? Many thanks

Keep getting "invalid token" errors in C#

I've spent the last few days trying to learn the C# language, but Visual C# 2008 keeps saying "invalid token" when my syntax is perfectly fine. Here is my source code: Console.WriteLine("Initializing...");             string path = "startup";             private Hashtable text = new Hashtable();             text.Add("startup", "Please type a command. For a list of available commands, type .");             Console.WriteLine("Start up complete.");             while (true)             {                 string info = text[path].ToString();                 Console.WriteLine(info);                 string comm = Console.ReadLine();                 if (comm == "help")                 {                     Console.Writeline("...");                 }             } The main thing it keeps rejecting are the parentheses. I've even tried removing them, to no avail. I would vastly appreciate some help.

Anyway here's what I need help finding: -Free devolpment and compiler program -Preferably programs with Basic or C -Works with JDM2 programmers. How do I use a " wait until " command in the arduino language?

I am trying to make quizbowl buzzers with the arduino.  I have gotten it to work with the nxt, but I want to use the arduino approach, because it is a waste to use the nxt for buzzers when I could be making robots with it... I haven't done much with arduino, in fact I have only looked at a few tutorials and downloaded the software.  But I need to know how to use a "wait until" command so that when a button is pressed a light lights up that on the control box containing the arduino (that corresponds with the button, or buzzer) that was pressed, and the light stays on (waits until) a clear button is pressed.  I'm sorry if the wording is confusing. I don't need a whole program, just the command, how to use it, and maybe a rough skeleton of the program

Yabasic (for the PS2)

I found Yabasic as an extra for a PS2 demodisc, and i recently dug it out from my Ps2 pile. it is a fun and simple piece of software for creating small programs, in which you type a command (eg. print, input, goto, beep etc.) and then a piece of text. here is a code for a simple number guess program, sorry for mistakesREM Number guess gameprint "I am thinking of a number between 1 and 50, try to guess it!"input a$if (a$>13) thenprint "your number was larger than mine!"goto inputendifelseif (a$<13) thenprint "your number was smaller than mine!"goto inputendifelseif (a$=13) thenprint "My number was 13! Congratulations, you win!"Feel free to edit the prints, and the number doesn't have to be 13. there are other things involving string variables and other commands. heres one called identitiy finderREM Identity finder programPrint "What is your name?" :":input a$Print "How old are you, ",a$,"?" :":Input b$Print "And where do you live, ",a$,"?" :":Input c$Print "so your name is ",a$,", you are ",b$," years old and you live in ",c$,", correct?"Pause 5Feel free to add more string variables, just add them as d$, e$, f$ etc.anyway, post coding for more yabasic programs, and use the stuff above!

PID control hardware?

This is for a college project, I'm not asking for help so much as advice. I need to write a PID algorithm and have it control an electromagnet. The only experience I have with this kind of stuff is C++ and arduino serial communications (with processing, not C++). Obviously the goal is to make the whole system as fast as possible, so could anybody recommend a programming language and hardware interface I might look into? Arduino on the whole seems a little slow, and I'm not  sure how fast the serial communications are or if something like USB might be better. Thanks in advance.

Programing (BASIC) , Want to learn

I would like to learn old school BASIC. The parallax basic stamp uses it's own version of it called PBASIC. I have not found any current books that will teach you a foundation to build on. I looked into programing for the absolute beginner and programming for dummies, both books seem to treat (teach) Basic as an object oriented language and jump into making window with buttons. That's not what I need right now. I want to start BASIC with the basics (forgive the pun), i.e. loops, if then statements and build a foundation . But I really need to start with BASIC so I can get the best use out of my BOE bot. PLEASE DON'T SUGGEST C OR SWITCHING TO A DIFFERENT PIC, I don't have money for that. All the parallax labs are in PBASIC.

Thoughts on Arduino/Raspberry Pi Idea?

Hi everyone, I am part of a research group at UC Berkeley working on a product involving the Arduino/Raspberry Pi. We are conducting market tests, and would really appreciate your help answering these questions. Thank you for your time! If you use Arduino/Raspberry Pi, how often do you use it? How do you use it? Would you consider it mostly a hobby or do you use it for school/industry as well? How were you first introduced to it? What are your general thoughts on the Arduino/Raspberry Pi? Did you learn to program by using the Arduino/Raspberry Pi or did you have some prior experience? If you had prior experience, how much? What languages are you well-versed in? Would you be interested in a model-based approach to programming Arduino/Raspberry Pi functions? This would be something akin to Matlab’s Simulink or Labview’s visual programming (flowcharts). The basic idea would be to remove the need to code in C. If you are not interested, why not? If you are interested, what specific features would you enjoy? Do you believe such a tool would be an efficient way to teach/introduce students to programming? In addition, here is a 1-minute survey (on a similar subject) if you are interested: Survey:

Some questions about Microsoft Small Basic

Hi there. I have been a user of the Microsoft Small basic programming language for a few weeks now, and i'm really bewildered by how amazingly easy and powerful it is. But I have a few questions about the more advanced features that the PDF tutorial didn't cover. 1) How do I use the File class? I know that it is used for saving progress and such, and would really like to add this to my programs, but the tutorial didn't say how to use it. (use example code, please). 2) What exactly is the Network class, and how do I use it? My best guess is that it creates some sort of telnet connection, (If so I can imagine a whole slew of Small Basic MUDs) 3) How do I use OnMouseClick events to make an image move to where the user clicks, Like in adventure games? This isn't probably something i'll be using for a while, but it's nice to know in case. 4) Are there any tutorials out there for the more advanced uses of Small Basic? The PDF Intro is very nice, but is pretty limited. P.S: I'm thinking of doing an instructable on Small Basic, on learning the language and such. What do you think of this idea? And please don't flame me saying "Dud u Shud just lern C++" because I am not interested. Thank you.

Help with Arduino programming for LED display

What I want to do is keep score with my coin soccer game. I will have 2 metal contacts in the goals that when a coin goes through it will break contact and send a signal to the Arduino having the contacts allways HIGH and then when its LOW, it changes an 7 segment LED. I am very new to programming and the C language. I think I can write the whole IF and ELSE statements but I don't know how to make the LED display change. I need the LED display to change after getting the signal from my Arduino by going up one number. It is a single 7 segment display. Can someone help me with the code for that? Thanks in advance.
