Overhead Projector

I have 2 overhead projectors that blow their bulbs. At $18-20 apiece I don't have the money to experiment with them anymore to figure out why. Has anyone got an idea how to convert one to use something like a standard Halogen or Xenon light? I would also need to keep the fan functional as well since any strong light is going to get very hot. I use them in my fiber art studio to project ideas onto paper for patterns.

DIY R2D2 projector

Hi All, So I had this idea of putting a pico projector into an R2D2 body so I can recreate the Princess Leia Hologram moment. I wanted to get some suggestions on what sort of materials I should use to build the body of the R2D2 droid. I see some people mold using styrafoam and I was thinking of going that direction but would it be better to use something sturdier just to house the projector? I also want something that would look cool but I dont have a 3d printer or any experience using plastic molds.  The projector is an AAXA p4 pico projector: Dimensions: 141*71*31 mm  Weight: 0.4 lbs Anything tips to keep in mind before I start construction?

Projector length of tube? Answered

I was curious if it's possibly to extend a projected image, from a projector (like tv/computer) down about a foot of tube. Tube would be 1 - 2 inches wide. If this isn't possibly what would be the smallest width the tube would have to be for it able to go down a foot of length?

Hiding ceiling projector

UPDATE! made some progress and have it all set up, its in the finishing touches area now. :) Items used- -12 in AC linear actuator -3 way switch - 4x draw slides - MDF - PVC - ceiling tile - various sizes of wood for frame for the actuator. ______________________________________________________________________________________ I have an idea for my ceiling mounted projector to hide in the ceiling tile and then lower down when a button is pressed. however I have no idea how to execute it. in theory I would need a motor to pull up and lower down the tile that the projector is mounted to and then run the cables down the wall to a switch. but I turn to you instructables to tell me how to make the motor stop when the tile is low enough on the cable and when it rises back into place with the other tiles. Sort of like an automatic window on a car. with the push of a button it goes into place and when the button is pushed again it rises back.?

Pinhole Slide Projector

Hi! I have no idea whether this is the right place to post this topic, but it does say 'burning questions' and that's what this is, so here goes. :-) I've had this idea for a kind of pinhole lense slide projector. The (very basic) diagram is pretty self explanatory, and I was wondering if anyone's tried/heard of anything like this, and whether it could work? Do you think a 100 LED torch would be bright enough? Also, if I'm right in thinking that LEDs don't get hot, there shouldn't be a risk of overheating/fire should there? Thanks! Looking forward to hearing what you think! :-)

Laser square projector

I work in a manufacturing facility and we've got a lot of forklifts that are buzzing around everywhere all the time. there's an initiative to make it safer for forklifts to interact with pedestrians. one of the ideas someone had came from another facility where they have these blue spot lights on top of the truck that project a blue dot in front of and behind the truck. you see the blue dot and you know a truck is coming. there's some concern that this might get missed by a pedestrian. a thought came to me, being a nerd, that we could use something maybe a little easier to see. I looked in to some disco type laser displays that you can display custom graphics with, but there's concern about how sturdy they are or how long you'd actually be able to use one (whatever it is would basically have to be on almost 24/7). we've got several Motorola barcode scanners, and the long range models (mc 9190) have a feature where it projects a red square to show the area where the scanning will take place. it's a solid red square, not just a perimeter, that scales up with distance (it's like 4"x4" if you're within 2' and goes up to a pretty large size the farther out you're pointing it). These scan guns are way more expensive than this project calls for of course. Does anyone know of a source for JUST the imagers for these things? or could anyone suggest a way to replicate the effect...a big red square on the floor, with other equipment. needs to be able to run for a long time, hopefully could be powered by a 24-36v DC source, possibly motion detection (though not really necessary)

just a thought... (ds projector)

Just a thought i had when i saw all of these led projectors on here. and then i saw a ds sitting on the table then i though, what if there was a such a thing as a ndsl projector?! how i believe it would be contructed, at  least the case anyways, would be to detach the top screen from the bottom. then to use the screen as you would any other in a diy projector, keeping in mind that it has to stay connected to the ds. then build half a ds arcade stand for the ds, and build the rest of the projector. would this be plausible? or would it be impossible?

video projector won't work Answered

Hello, I have been trying to get a Sanyo Multiverse to work with a 20w chip LED. I may have tricked it's motherboard it into thinking it is powering a bulb. The projector stays on instead of turning off when the bulb was missing. I put the led chip where the bulb was, and turned on the LED on. I saw a yellow light. If I tilt the chip inside the light housing, it will change the colors projected. I could not get a change in color as I pressed buttons like menu or input. Is the lcd not getting a signal? The LCD wires are plugged in all the way.

Using a projector with a timer switch? Answered

I am trying to set up an art installation which will involve a projector projecting a video piece in the middle of the night when unattended. I was planning on connecting it up to a laptop and somehow using a timer switch. I realized though that the projector may go to sleep or may not work using this timer switch option. I would set the video projection up with blank space on the video to correspond with timer so that for example if I wanted the projector to come on in five hours time I would put five hours of empty space at the start of the video meaning that whenever the projector comes on it is timed with where the video is at that point and the video will play. I know there are holes all over this so any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks, Rachael

DIY Projector bulb problem ?

In reading some of the instructables on DIY projector lamp replacements I decided to give it a shot. So I purchased a Proxima Ultralight LX1 off of ebay, and when it arrived it contained no previous bulb, so I purchased a MR16 style 100 watt halogen bulb and installed it (with a seperate power supply). When I started it up and connected it to my laptop it worked fine for about a minute or so (give or take) but then the image went blank (not the bulb but the LCD screens showed blackness) for five seconds, then the image popped up as nothing had ever happened. I have tried everything to prevent this, other computers, killing the ballast (which is quite easy, only one wire to disconnect) different video sources and no dice. But I do know that it has nothing to do with the light bulb because it is on a completley different power supply and is not connected electronically to the projector in any way, there is something wrong with the controls of the unit Any Help would be appreciated, Thanks Bwpatton1

Slide projector video display

Hi, first time posting, and I would like some basic advice on a problem i am encountering with a project.I am attempting to convert an old slide projector (single slide variety) into a video projector. Light output will be fine once I get a higher wattage bulb, and temperature is not a real issue. The problem i have is that, i need a display (around 2x2 inch) and I am not sure where to get one that you could hook up to  an external input. I have, however, found a few old cell phone screens. Does anyone think that this would work, and if you know of any, could you please post some helpful web sites on how to wire these displays. Also, if you know of any ready-made displays that would be suitable to tear apart and use, that would be useful.much appreciated, thanks.

Candle Powered Shadow Projector

If anyone has seen the movie "Sleepy Hollow" starring Johnny Depp, you must have noticed the scene where the little boy lights the candles in the punched tin can, the can starts to spin from the heat of the candles, and the punched holes in the can are shapes, a cat, a witch, a tree, etc, and these shapes are actually projected onto the walls, projected and spinning very, very slowly.  As you know this movie is set in the late 1800's, so it is not any kind of electrical thing.  I would love some ideas on how to make one of these, I don't even know what they are called, I have looked for one on ebay and here on instructables....I've been calling it a "shadow projector" but that probably isn't right.  It is an awesome little contraption, great for halloween or anytime, depending on the theme of the pictures punched on it.  Any ideas/photos/clues would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Making a cheap cheap projector?

I know that it's possible to crack open a "oldish" laptop or even a new one and remove the shielding around the lcd itself and shine a special light through it that's bright enough where you essentially make a lcd projector. I have a old toshiba satellite 2520cds with specs like a 2mb vid card, 96mb of ram, 4 gig hd, and a 300mhz amd processor. It runs somewhat fast, even for windows xp that I installed on it and plan to upgrade the hd down the road, but I wonder, would I be able to do the same thing with this? The screen is an older lcd that has that "motion blur" effect to it, so would it be worth it? Is there some way I could connect this lcd to my video card on my pentium 2 I have that would allow me to actually watch movies?

Ever seen the movie "Sleepy Hollow" starring Johnny Depp?  There is a scene in the movie where a little boy lights a punched tin candle holder, the punches are shaped like cats, witches, scary trees, etc.  The heat from the candle makes the tin slowly spin.....casting scary shadow pictures all over the walls.  This is SO COOL, I have been looking for one for years on ebay, antique shops and such....cannot find one!  This would make a GREAT instructable!

How to build a wireless switch to control a projector lift and electric projector screen!?

This is for a home theatre  setup. The projector is installed on a motorized lift that hangs in the ceiling. The screen is motorized. They are both 110v AC motors, and they both have seperate up / down leads to control the respective operation. The screen motor is 110v 0.7 amp and the projector lift is 110v 0.8 amp. The screen takes approx. 20 seconds to lower and has no apparent calibration to stop at any particular point (I would like the controller to be able to have this capability). The lift motor has a 'up' stop and a 'down' stop adjustment that cuts power on its own when it reachs these points so the controller just has to provide power for the length of time it takes the motor to get there which is about 12 seconds. Both devices have optional add-on hardware to make them infrared controllable but it costs approx $400 each to go that route. My hope is that I can control them with my universal remote along with having a manually controlled switch in case of remote failure. I want to build this as my first project for contribution to Instructables and the Home Theatre community. Is this do-able for less than $50? Please help. Thank you all for your help in advance.

Near Wall Wide Angle Projector

Sony will be releasing a 4k projector called the 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector, later this year or sometime in the future. It's a very nice looking setup of having the projector built into a cabinet that sits right along the wall it's projecting on, freeing up walking space. The only problem is it will be $30,000-40,000. I'm curious to see if it's possible to build something that accomplishes the same setup with current projectors, being able to project a decent quality image at a large scale from only a foot away from the wall.

Traveling horizontal lines on a projector display?

I hooked up this projector at work (it's a BenQ) and when I view the projected image (in this case a computer screen) I see horizontal lines traveling up the picture. This projector is the only thing on the circuit right now.  I had to branch off the existing electrical line to add a new plug on the ceiling.  When I plug the projector into the existing outlets I get no lines, when I plug it into the outlet I installed I get lines.  The existing outlets on the circuit are all isolated grounds.  I have tried wiring in a regular outlet and then switched it to an isolated ground when the lines appeared, thinking it could be a ground issue.  I know my wiring is correct as I've installed these projectors before. What could it be?

Convert Sharp vision projector to LED? Answered

It's pretty old and worked for a few days, but now im getting a blinking green light, and a quick google search said that meant the ballast needs to be replaced. I was wondering since there is already an existing lcd and lens in the projector if I could gut the ballast and bulb out and replace it with a set of high powered LEDs. I saw a hackaday article not to long ago of a  high powered flashlight.....maybe the same tech inside of a projector. How to extend a power switch on a projector? Answered

The problem I have encountered is that it will be in a place where it will be inaccessable to me, so I was wondering  If I could extend the power switch to my "control table". I figured when I bought that it used a soldered on SPST pushbutton switch, but when I got the projector and disassembled it, it had some kind of onboard switch (which I will have to post a pic of becasue its really hard to explain) Any help would be appreciated Thanks! Oh, I almost forgot, It is so old I cannot find a remote for it, so thats not an option.

Uses for old and broken projectors/overheads

Our school, for some reason has a lot of partially dismantled and broken projectors. This year, all the classrooms have also been installed with a fancier ceiling-projector that connects to laptops and computers instead of just reflecting pieces of overhead paper. Because it was only recently that the school greenhouse came into use, it's been used as storage. While we could recycle them, I think they could be turned into something useful (preferably for the greenhouse), but I don't have any ideas. I'd like some ideas or for someone to try and build something. The only idea I've had was to turn it into a planter or pot, but apparently the bulbs won't work with plant lights and wouldn't be bright enough.

Miniature Stage Light LED Projector

Hello inventors!!!! How are you? A long time ago I had an Idea! Make a toy theater or better a miniature stage box computerized. I've already made everything but now I need projector and motors for sets design. Before, I would like to start with Lights. There are a lot of project in this site with leds and the best way to create my theater lights is to use led pixel modules connected an Arduino! Now, everything sounds right and simple but is not really like that, because I want perfection! Do you know how to made miniatures stage lights? And also beautiful to see? I mean not just a tube with a diode inside? I work on stage as an artist and choreographer and I love lights. There are 3 kind of that... and I would like to realize all three. Image 1 - Simple spot (simple light) image 2/3 - Spot with Gobos/Images(that's amazing, do you know this kind of projector that can project images (called gobos)? I found on internet these pens that you can see below. They are perfect to made it but the problem is that you have to buy 5000pcs minimum....! So how to create it? where I can find the lens? The well? It will be amazing if we can also install a little step motor drived by arduino that is able to change gobos!!!) image 4 - Motorized Spot ( we can put together this two spots and made one that can move. We can use maybe 2 Servo motors! With that we can made them change directions but servos are so big...! a simplest and little idea?) All these light source are a single led that have a WS2801 chip to drive colors independently so the first one is simple to made...What about the second one? Thank you inventors!

Advice on building a RC projector enclosure

I have a video projector mounted on the underside of a moveable wood panel on my patio ceiling (see pic, the yellow plastic would be removed) that I'd like to build an enclosure for that won't break the bank. Since it is too high to reach, ideally (with some help) I can construct an enclosure for when it is not in use, that I can remotely adjust to use the projector (for example; via linear actuator or screw drive, etc.). The challenge is the projector has fans and cooling vents on the sides which need clearance to be effective, so three sides of the projector must be clear (the third is the front w/ the lens). All told, the vertical distance of movement for this clearance would be about 4-6". While I'm not well versed in this kind of small motor/arduino/circuitry construction, I'm pretty handy and am confident I can figure it out with some help. I have found many examples of RC box openers with hinged lids, but in all these hinged designs there would not be enough side clearance for the vents. I hope my description was not too confusing, I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks!

Fiber optic cable to laser projector? Answered

I purchased a "Mr. Christmas" Laser (green) Outdoor Holiday Projector to add to my holiday lighting this year. Being rightly concerned with theft if I was naive enough to leave the projector outside, I thought of using fiber optic cable attached to the laser lens housing (still haven't worked out how I would accomplish that), and routing it from inside the house to a point outiside where the cable end would project on a wall or my garage door, providing a show (sans sound), but protecting the laser projector from theft. Is my idea feasible? If not, I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.
