A US woman had a lucky escape when a burglar's bullet bounced off the metal underwire in her bra.Police in the city of Detroit said one of three intruders fired a shot when the woman looked out of her window and saw them raiding the house next door. The bullet smashed the window and hit her, but instead of causing serious injury - or worse - it was deflected off the wiring in her bra.The unnamed 57-year-old woman was taken to hospital and released the same day."It did slow the bullet down," said a police spokesman. "She sustained injuries but they're not life-threatening."Teenage gangThe woman, who lives on the west side of Detroit, had seen the youths breaking into the house next door while her neighbour was away.Police believe one of the gang saw her looking out of the window and fired at her.The suspects then drove away after the shooting.Local police Sgt Eren Stephens Bell told the Detroit News: "We need to get some bulletproof vests made from that. It is some strong wire." BBC Story

I said i would help my sister transform the old office in the garden for her to use as a chilling room with her mates, there going to be drinking and be loud so we wanna sound proof the room, the problem is its quite a small room so hanging blankets will make it smaller, and its already contructed from standards bricks so we cant get it propperly sound proofed... is there a way that doesnt take up much space and will look nice? we've also got a single glassed window in there that lets alot of sound out, is there anyway to prevent this without getting double glassing?? on a tight budget

I have a multi-toed (Polydactal) cat blessed with the ability to access most anything, and even open cabinets and drawers that slide open and shut. I have quite a few sets of earrings (by a few I mean close to 50ish) - I probably wear a variety of about 4 now because it's too hard to keep the favorites out and visible without my cat also seeing and being able to access them. I saw some earring display ideas on the site, however, I really want to make something that is easy on the eyes but not something that becomes the center of attention in the room. HELP!!!!

After playing Super Smash Brothers Brawl at a party in a sound proof room on a projection screen, I've been trying to convince my parents to do the same to one of our unused rooms. Build a "teenage hangout". It will be very hard to convince them to do this, the lower the cost, the better. Is there any cheap tricks do doing this (and still look nice)? Memory foam on the walls? Obviously the screen itself will take the most convincing, but if that fails I'll use our 60in TV (three years of begging at it's finest :D ). I might even make it into an Instructable.

Long story short, in melbourne australia i have organised a group called citizen patrol group we basically patrol trains, buses, streets etc and help people in need and remove the trouble makers we do this in super hero costumes (not as silly as it sounds we are creating a character worth looking up to and bringing innocence back to children through good old fashioned super heroes) my problem is we are aware it can be dangerous but commercially made ballistic vests are illegal in my country i want the best protection for my team mates and am looking for GOOD QUALITY methods of creating one or if there is a legal loop hole that will allow us our right to protect our bodies.

I really hope someone can help me. I really need a clock I can have outside. I teach classes outside and I need to know what time it is. Waterproof clock prices are exorbitant... I bet they're easy to make. Nothing comes up when I google waterproof clock works. I have this huge metal disk I found by the side of the road and it would be cool to make that into a gigantic outdoor clock. But how to make sure it's not destroyed the first time it rains...? Can anyone help? THANK YOU!

My wife and I were discussing this the other night and we're on opposite ends of the spectrum. She says that there are artifacts, ancient records and things like that that prove Jesus was an actual person and actually existed. I've never really seen, read or heard of anything that does so like some type of death record, etc. Is there any type of actual artifact (other than scriptures and the Bible) that can corroborate it? I say no there is not. What do you think?

I'm wondering if anyone has any idas on how I could make a cheap, portable baby yard style fence. For those who don't know, I'm talking about a 2.5'ish foot fence that can circle around and attatch to itself, essentially trapping your kid in an area. The commercial ones tend to cost 50 and up if you hope to give the kid a decent amount of area. I'm just wondering if anyone here has come up with a solution, or has an idea in their head that make work. Thanks, Tony

I am hoping that some of you creative, DIY'ers out there can brainstorm with me to come up with a vandal proof (or at least resistant) rural mailbox. Our mailbox sits 4.5 miles out from our house, in the middle of nowhere, at a county crossroads. It has been shot up and other wise vandalized several times over the years. One time some sick jerk put 3 small dead dogs in it. I still can't believe that one. Most recently, the entire mailbox and 2-pc mounting post was stolen. The whole thing! We looked for several miles along the ditches to see if it had been tossed, but no luck. I have looked at the commercial mailboxes, and boy, are they expensive! If I am going to spend that kind of cash, I'd rather find a way to make something that will REALLY do the job. So, I am visualizing something metal, like a steel barrel. Somehow making a locking access door to retrieve mail (the mail carrier is not allowed to carry a key, OR get out of his vehicle) but with a large enough mail slot to accommodate small packages, maybe with some kind of trapdoor to drop mail down but prevent sticking an arm in to steal mail. What kind of ideas can you all come up with? I figure I can get my cousin to do any welding I might need, Thanks! I look forward to reading your good ideas!

I need a little box that the dogs can't push aside and stick their head into, something they can't manage to paw at to get their head into the "kitty treats." I have seen a wooden box with a top you can swing open that looks like a maze inside. It was on an exclusive pet website and too expensive for cheap!!

After reading online I thought about an easy cheap alternative to lessen the noise in my garage studio room from escaping to the outside world. After the new construction the smaller space seems to echo much more than before, thus the need for more soundproofing/deadening. I though about building forms with plywood backing and filling them with readymix quickrete with wire mesh on top. After fastening the frames onto the brakets I have that will be firmly fastened to the wall in staggered pattern drywall and carpet padding will be applied on top of the plywood side of the form that would be facing toward the middle of the room thus creating a second relatively thick layer of sound deadening with roughly 1 1/2 inched of dead air space trapped between the outer and inner layer walls. Has anyone ever tried this? Thoughts, comments, suggestions welcome. To clarify: From outside to inside I would have: Siding - Standard Wrap and OSB - Stud- Moisture Barrier- Insulation - 5/8 Drywall - 1 1/2 inches of dead air space - Wire mesh side of concrete forms 1 in thick - concrete- plywood backing side of form - carpet padding - drywall - carpet Thanks. John

I was wondering if any of you had any advice for the front of a whole wall shelving unit I am planning on building (and the shelves as well if you have any suggestions). You see, although there is a cavity wall between this room and the next, I am wary of a noise complaint as it is a different flat’s bedroom. I will be using it as a music production room and ideally want decent acoustics as well as adding an extra these extra layers to stop leakage. (I’ll draw some pictures and upload them to clarify what I’m saying)* Two things I’ve been thinking about using: 1. A high-density curtain hanging in front of the whole unit. While this could possibly deal with the main issue of a noise complaint better than the next idea, I’m worried it will create a bad mixing environment with a really ‘dead’ wall behind my speakers. 2. Hanging, sliding acoustic panels using egg box foam under a sheet of fabric. This will look like a normal acoustic panel with the fabric pinned around a timber frame. I was thinking of forgoing using any sheet wood so I could hang a piece of high-density carpet/ fabric at the back and not have the panel too heavy. The wall measures about 3.2m W x 2.3m H so I was thinking of using three, maybe four hanging panels. It’s my understanding that a hanging panel would absorb more energy from the sound waves than one on wheels or in a sliding track. To hang the panels the main idea I had was to use metal tubing (uncertain as to what material to use, conduit?). With the three panels, I would use two main lengths of it one on the same height, parallel to the other, with the distance between needed to stop the panels on either track hitting each other. From above or below it would look a bit like this U=====U (sorry if this doesn’t translate to your device well… See pictures) with the ends of the U going into holes drilled into the wood, extending as far as the shelves will be deep if needed. With four I would just have two sets of the same but smaller. Sorry if this doesn’t make much sense, rushed off me feet at the moment. Many thanks Jay *Sorry the pictures ended up pretty awful, just moving in, need a proper table…

'Cause if I simply put chicken wires in the ground they cannot scratch off the ground, wich is a quite important part of the 'cleaning process' we look for, isnt it? i eard about staking fences on the ground laying 50cm all around to make long and difficult way for the rats to dig under And why not even sharping the stakes to be nastier... ? But if someone have more simple ideas, for more easy ;ooving and maintenance... A good challenge! thanks

A girl from the Bunnings store recommended that I used a super glue that is ok with plastic - Bit of a mistake on her behalf.. the superglue even though it was "supposed" to work with plastic burnt the plastic and rubber a bit.. I need recommendation of what clear sealant / glue to use to repair this thing properly but is still durable to rubbing in your pockets... As you can see, the screen has peeled away again.. Help please! Regards, Simon.

I went to a hardware store to get recommendation on re-sealing the screen to the lifeproof case but the lady incorrectly suggested a superglue that supposedly was meant to work with plastic and rubber but didn't. As you can see, the superglue burnt the plastic and rubber a bit. Could someone please recommend a glue or sealant to seal the case again so its waterproof and also is durable so that it doesn't rub off in my pocket. Help please!

Have an apartment desk, with 3 foot railing around it but too much space between the "rungs" for my 3 year old. Anyone have experience circumventing this and/or screening in apartment decks? Anyone know of or have experience with pre-fabricated kits for this purpose? Essentially what I'm looking for is a way to barricade the railing so that my toddler and his toys can't slip between the rails. Also would like to screen in the porch to ward off pests and make it somewhat rain proof. Primary requirement is that the system must be removable with minimal damage to the existing infrastructure. Thanks for any help!

My sister is moving into a new apartment, and is bringing her two cats ,zap and kiff, along. the problem is, she wants to be able to let them out onto the patio of the new place, without worrying about them running away. the patio has a fence four feet high all the way around it, and the upstairs tenants have a balcony above, so our original plan was to screen it in and make a screened in patio. unfortunately, the managers of the complex say that all of the patios must be the same, and screening it in would create a large aesthetic difference between the apartments. does anyone have any ideas about how to keep the cats from jumping over the fence without changing the look of the apartment?

I need to intstall some sort of a sound proof floor brtween and upstairs/downstairs duplex. There is currently a 3/4 plywood subfloor with carpet and padding over it with insulation between the floor joists but it still allows a lot of noise to travel between the 2 units. I am wondering if I can use some sort of sound board with a laminate flooring laid on top of that?
I have some cash that I want to keep in my house - emergency fund - but I worry about two things - theft & fire. Any ideas of something that won't burn up in a house fire that small? What usually survives house fires?

So yeah, I was thinking about making a sound-proof box as part of a project and wondered: would a gel sac make good sound insulating material. You know the stuff I mean - the little sac like things you can't help but prod about on posh mouse mats and on gel bike saddles. Thinking about that I also realised I didn't really know what the 'gel' material actually is? Is it possible to easily make a similar or substitute substance at home? Thanks.
