Prototyping service

Does anyone know of a good prototyping service that is fairly fast, very reliable and has good ethics? This would be a fairly simple job, using leather, paper/cloth and plastic (not electromechanical or gizmoid). Thanks so much!

Iconic Prototypes

Over at Wired, there is a photo set of early prototypes of iconic products. Here is the story for everyone's favorite summer toy, the super soaker:   Lonnie Johnson was trying to build a better refrigerator, based on a low-cost heat pump that circulated water instead of Freon. But when one of his custom-machined brass nozzles blasted a stream of water across his bathroom, Johnson—by day an engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory—realized he had the makings of something way more fun. A shotgun-style air pump and a series of check valves allowed for sniperlike range and accuracy with little exertion. Selling the idea to toy companies, though, was more of an effort. After seven years of frustration, Johnson scrapped his difficult-to-manufacture Plexiglas “pressure containment vessel” for an empty 2-liter soda bottle. It wasn’t slick, but it was easy to make. In 1990, the toy maker Larami brought the Power Drencher to store shelves; it sold roughly 2 million of them in the first year alone. Rebranded as the Super Soaker, the line has raked in sales of more than $200 million to date.

Thoughts on a prototyping device

Hey I'm a college student trying to create a specialty extruder to aid in prototyping, possibly to be used along side a 3D printer.  Attached is a CAD mockup but we're in the process of building this.  The applcations are fairly broad at the moment and if you think of a cool way to use long pieces of plastic for modelling, crafts, art, whatever, please let me know. This is my kickstarter and I'm trying to get any feedback you have, thanks! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...?ref=discovery

Guitar Pedal Prototypes

Don't get me wrong, I love acoustic guitars... But I love a good crazily distorted guitar that almost sounds like a synth. Rage against the machine's guitarist Tom Morello epitomizes that wild sound for me. Most good bands have an instantly recognizable sound and one of the ways a guitarist can distinguish zer self is to use a unique set of pedals. Now you could go buy a set and find just the right setup for your taste... or you can build your own. Best part is, there's no soldering involved:Bevis Boardvia:Make

ZipDart prototyping help

OK, had an idea and went with it for my ZipDart V.2. Unfortunately, currently having a bit of a brain fart of how to put a ratchet mech in. I've tried 7 attempts, 3 have even actuated and of those three none were responsive enough to be at all deserving of the ZipDart name. There is a google photo album linked below of the mech area and the gun on a whole. Feel free to comment either there or here with any ideas or insight. The mech can be complicated, just so long as it takes less than a half an inch of actuation rod travel to actuate and is fairly strong. Thanks for any help--if anyone has any questions or wants any more pictures, just ask. Photo album

help with patent and prototype

I have been working on an invention/idea for the past year now. I can make a prototype if I really wanted to, if i did it would look like crap, and no one would buy it. Plus, I was told you do not need a proto type to sell an idea. It's a simple invention that you can use small plastic parts, and can be used in everyhouse hold. I have went to places like invent help and others, but no real help. They just want a lot of money to market it for you, and help you get a patent. I have no patent because, I have about 6 different models and don't really know which one is best for marketing, selling, things like that. I don't really know anyting about computers and the internet. I paid a lawyer to look up my ideas/inventions and so far there is nothing out there that is close? Looking for help or different ideas to market and patent my ideas?? any info would help, a lot of web pages for help costs thousands of dollars, which I do not have. Oodassault 4 Prototype

Well, here's my first attempt at making my V4. It's packed with features but unfortunately it isn't reliable yet so DON'T BUILD IT! I'm probably going to end up having to totally modify it to work so I wanted to get a picture before I ended up destroying it without hopes of getting it to work. Anywho, I don't care for block pistols but after giving it a shot, it's much easier to incorporate things like a pinlock this way. I'll start listing off the features because I don't want my entire picture to be comprised of yellow boxes. Starting at back working to the front: 1. Uses a new pin concept that I've been working with. There's a red connector connected to the pin, and then the yellows are connected as show to absorb the force. In theory, this should mean that because the force isn't transferred to the connection of the pin and the band holder, it shouldn't require any sort of other force suppressors to keep the pin in. However, it does make a loud clap so I'm probably going to try adding rubber bands around the connectors (but not around the pin) to quiet it. 2. I finally added a pin lock. I'm bleh on it though as it requires a broken orange in the barrel (I just have these pieces "naturally' so I figured most K'nexers would) and a band to ensure it works, but it works nonetheless and it adds almost no friction from the way it's on. 3. I stole KSC's idea for wheels. I'm not sure how much it'll help but I figured, eh, it doesn't hurt. 4. It uses the bullpup trigger idea from my PDR so that I can have a more compact weapon with good power. 5. The handle is from my new UMP and was added to give a more comfortable angle. It also is three layers with no white rods needed. It's decent as far as comfort goes. 6. Finally, it has a tilting mag that's right in front of the handle, so it's easy to access. The problem is I need to make a better pusher and figure out a lock for the new pusher. I think the barrel is part of it because I went back to the old blue rod style. The gun isn't reliable at all. 7. Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention that I'm experimenting with adjustable sights. I didn't make adjustable sights for this gun, per se, but rather I added multiple folding sights that are at the same height, taller than the front sight. This means that the closer the rear sight you use, the more of an angle the gun has. I doubt this'll be useful at all but there was room so I just threw them in there much like the wheels. And that's that. The feel of the weapon is pretty nice. It's balanced. But yeah, that's all I've got to say.

Best Material to Use in Toy Manufacturing with 3D Printer

New Prototype Knex Guns

Hello fellow knexers!   Today I bring what I've been working on for the last couple of weeks ( and another picture of Zip3 ). I think some of these guns are post worthy and some aren't, so instead of previewing them all separately I've made this forum topic to help me decide what guns you'd like me to work more with, post, or just disappear. So I added the video to show all the features of the guns and also to help bridge the gap I'll also say a little about each of them in this description.       Project Eject. A handgun that eject shells. It shoots blue rods that have spacer shells on them and it increases the guns efficiency and range.      Project Break Action, Break action knex gun with shell. It can shoot pretty much anything including oddammo, with really good range.     Project Precision an assault rifle that bridges the gap between war guns and models. The gun is capable of holding a lot of elastic while shooting well indoors and outdoors. Also has slightly better accuracy due to the long barrel that I lined with micro knex to make it thinner, but not restraining.           Project Micro, a knex gun that uses Micro knex to the fullest, mainly to make the gun four layers thick. Micro knex have similar thickness to a blue spacer, so about half a classic knex piece thickness. I feel that micro knex can push knex guns further and in a more innovative direction, so building this gun was mainly to show that it was possible and a decent idea. The one thing I learned though was that micro knex are a little thicker than the blue spacer so I'll use more micro knex to fill the gun next time.                       So that's what I created over the last few days. I'd like to hear what you knex gun gurus have to say about it and if I've created anything your interested in.   Thanks for looking! JonnyBGood

Knex double shot prototype

Here we have a slightly angled pin knex gun. The pin is slightly angled down, making the pin come in the magazine well angled, hitting two bullets instead of one. It uses an internal flexy bullet pusher instead of the external ones. It shoots two bullets 30 feet using two bands. It has a yellow rod magazine that isn't removable. It also uses a unique trigger system. Its comfortable, light weight and is very fun to use. No sights, its just a prototype.

Determining the cost of building a prototype?

Hi there, I am inexperienced in engineering and building things in general, but I am trying to start a tech company anyway. I am currently in the process of determining the budget cost of building a prototype for various designs of ideas. So I am wondering if you can tell me how much commonly used tools and materials of a DIY mechanical/electrical engineering project might cost. If you don't know because estimates can vary, then tell me from your personal experience how much your list of tools and materials costed you on various projects that you've done. Thank you!

Gripper toy/Prosthetic Prototype

Well its a simple cycle brake (side pull single pivot, brake pads removed) inserted in a glove that can be used to grab objects. The initial idea was to build on it further and have the brake lever fitted under the armpit such that when the arm is moved towards the body the lever gets pulled and the grip tightens to grab objects for persons who might be missing part of the hand from below the elbow. However didn't get any further for various reasons, would be very happy if anyone would find it useful.

Finding a builder to test a prototype

I am working on an item, and it requires a small bit of dimensional lumber, ply, and screws. I am trying to make the plans as specific as I can, but having worked in the engineering field as a draftsman many years ago, I know that mistakes can and do get made. So, I am wondering how I would go about finding someone to test build (without fooling with the wiring and such for the electrical components) my plans to find any errors or oversights, inaccurate or unclear directions, and the like. How would I go about doing that? Is there even a forum on Instructables for people to be test-builders? That would be a great thing if there were.

Question by lancer525

Where to start prototyping with straingauges?

Can anyone recommend a reasonably-priced prototyping kit for straingauges or something similar, and/or a good document on how to actually design around these beasts? What I'm trying to build is essentially a box with a handle on each end, which can measure the force applied inward or outward on those ends. Measurement range would probably about +/- 40 pounds, though I'd be happier if it could tolerate (but not necessarily measure) higher forces just in case someone does something stupid. The measurement doesn't have to be on a smooth curve but does need to be continuous and repeatable so I can calibrate it reasonably accurately. If you think of it as a kind of game controller, where you're squeezing it together or pulling it apart to varying degrees to make the game respond, that's fairly close to what I need. Doesn't necessarily have to be straingauge, but needs to be something with essentially that behavior -- I really want to measure the pressure/tension applied with imperceptable motion (for fast response). And yes, I do need both directions. Unfortunately all the documentation I've found on straingauges talks about the electronic aspects. and says very little about the practical mechanical aspects of working with them. And I haven't yet seen anything resembling a reasonably priced experimenter's/prototyping kit from any of the manufacturers. Yeah, I suppose I could cannibalize an electronic scale for the first prototype... but I'd still like to learn the proper approach and find an experimenter-friendly source of parts.

help creating a biosensor prototype

I will attempt to be as concise as possible. That said, please bare with me if things are explained as well as they need to be, I am very new to this. Determined, but still a novice. I am conducting research as part of an effort to create a wearable prototype. Essentially, I need to combine a ppg heart rate monitor with a infrared thermometer (to measure skin temperature) and to have both devices maintain bluetooth capability. Any input in regards to this would be amazing.  More specifically, I am wondering if there are any DIY ppg heart rate monitor and/or infrared thermometer starter kits? Or resources that will assist with building these elements, aside from tutorials. I ask because it is a challenge to uncover all of the nuance and intricacies with electrical engineering and design without having a sufficient background.  For instance, it is clearly possible to add a bluetooth component to a heart rate monitor, but I am unsure if the two components (ppg hrm and infrared therm) must "talk" to each other while maintaining a bluetooth connection to a website or some other device.  If this is all as "simple" as building these devices separately and adding a bluetooth component to each of them, it would be greatly appreciated if you can provide a specific link to easy sources to obtain the components. I think I can follow along the tutorials, though there are still questions there.  Salud

Has anyone had success obtaining parts directly from companies like this? I was thinking emailing the sales rep, saying I'm working on a prototype, and requesting a sample. Do you think that would work? Could someone point me toward a template for an email that would sound "professional"? Also what type of payment do you think they would expect, would just a credit card number be fine? Thank you.

So it would be on the left or right of the breadboard. I always round ground at the outside, and 5v in the middle. So swapping ends will work. Thanks, and I will keep looking Mick M

Folding Bike Wheel Invented

Traveling with bikes can made easier with couplings and taking it apart, but the wheel has always been a solid item that has to be worked around. This might not be true in the future with this new folding wheel that is made up of six segments. This design by Duncan Fitzsimmons is being looked at by major manufacturers, or so he says, but no matter what it will take a while to come to market and likely cost more than all of my bikes combined. I can only hope that these eventually do some out and the economy of scale makes them only mildly ridiculous in price. link

What wire to use for a prototype board?

I am trying to build a couple of prototype boards (the kind with lots of plated holes), but I cannot seem to find the right wire. I want to solder the wire to the board, not use insulated wire-wrap, but any wire I try is either too thin, too thick, or is hard to solder. In the past I used resistor leads, those seem to be perfect for the task; now I want to buy some specific wire, but I am struggling to get a good search term I can use to find a roll of a similar wire.Do you have any hints on where I could buy a suitable wire for a prototype board? Thanks!

Simple Design and Digital Prototyping Software

Hi guys. I've been making some very simple mechanisms for a steampunk Instructables series I've got planned, and have been prototyping using cardboard and paper. This has actually worked really well, but I'm a fan of the digital realm, too, and was wondering if anyone could recommend some simple, cheap (ideally freeware) digital prototyping software to help me eliminate (or minimize) the paper and card phase? As I say, the mechanics are very simple. Cams, pulleys, levers, gears -- nothing more complex than bell cranks, linkages and basic drives. I think a scotch yoke is about as adventurous as it's got so far. So I'm looking for some nice simple software that'll allow me to build and test the mechanisms digitally, if such a thing exists. I've looked at the likes of Autodesk and Blender, but they seem like a sledgehammer to cure a headache. Even something that runs online in a browser, or an iPhone/iPad app would be good (I've played some physics-based games on the iPad that would almost be ideal if they weren't puzzle games!). Any advice? Cheers guys!

Working SRv3 and Directional Mine Prototype

I haven't had the time to work on the SRv3 in a while so here is what I am thinking of doing. Let me know what you think. I want to release an ible on what I have built up to this point. Which by the way is a working shooting gun that shoots exactly how I want it to I just need the body, front, grip, stock, and bi pod to be designed and built. If you build what I present your SRv3 will shoot 500ft. What do you think? I want to make this gun a collaboration of design ideas so we can all build the gun as a community. Let me know if this sounds fun to you all. If so I'll post pics this weekend! 08/11/2013 Pics of both my working SRv3 and Directional Mine Prototype coming soon! Just a few fun stats of the two. The SRv3 has been recorded to shoot over 500ft and is extremely accurate. The Directional Mine launches 25+ K'nex green rods over 50ft in a nice spread pattern that can be activated by both trip wire and pull cord. Both are shooting great and are extremely fun to use! I hope to get a video and ible/forum up soon showing how to build both and how they preform! 08/14/2013 Go check out the Directional Mine Prototype on my ible NOW!
