Golf carts for racing

Hi, I'm new to this group but not to working on golf carts. I have been working on carts now for 15 years and I just started another venture in drag racing them. This is a lot of fun and hard work though but I really like the people in which I race around. If you are in SC area this May 2011 come join us for a weekend of racing and showing off your cart in Pageland SC. If anyone has questions about there cart feel free to ask!

Racing Game Physics

I've been designing a physics engine for a racing game for a long time now (months? years?) and I think that I've finally got almost everything figured out. The one thing that I don't know about is traction. So far my best guess for a formula is T = X + (Y * S)Where T is the stabilizing force on the car, S is the amount of slippage, and X and Y are two of the car's stats (probably measured in G's). This formula would be applied to each tire separately to account for the suspension.NOTE: The thing that might not be obvious here is that the car doesn't slip at all as long as X isn't exceeded. What do you think of this?

100m race clock

I was just wondering I anyone has ever seen a rig that you could use at home, during exercise, to do precise measurement of the time it takes to run 100m (eg.)? It's a little awkward to do with a stop watch in your hand and there is lots of room for error. You would need a beep to tell you that time has started, and some way to stop the time once you have reached the desired distance. thanks Alan

The Great Egg Race Returns!

Brits of a certain age will remember The Great Egg Race - teams of ingenious chaps using the contents of a typical shed or kitchen to solve a problem of which they have no prior notice, kind of a cardigan-wearing precursor to Scrapheap Challenge (aka Junkyard Wars). At the same time, an international egg-mobile contest was going on; teams and individuals competing to make vehicles to carry a 70g egg as far as possible, powered only by a single, small elastic band.  For American readers, it's a similar idea to a mouse-trap car. Well, it's back! Firstly, there's a digitised archive of shows from the Early eighties (the years when I was in secondary education!) available online here (sorry, I don't know if they are available to US viewers, but maybe you can find it YouTube?). In addition, Auntie Beeb is bringing it back, or at least, it's spirit, in the form of a new Wallace and Gromit show, with animated inventions, instructions for making your own gadgets (some familiar to us here, like a vibrobot, others more unusual, like a Magnus-effect car (I'm really curious about that one!). Keep an eye on this show, folks, and on the hands-on page - it could be a great source of inspiration for new Makers, and your own Instructables.

Why does my lawn mower engine keep dying?

I am in a night class called Design for Industry. In that class we design, make, and test a mini indycar.  We are using the same car from last year, but the previous teacher didn't exactly car about the car, or so it seems. We had to fix the wiring, key ignition, solenoid and starter motor. After we got the wiring and electrical all fixed, we decided to take the car out and try to run it. It did run, but it was rough. If we wanted it to idle while just sitting it wouldn't do it,however. If I (the driver)  slowing opened the choke and gave it gas, the car would start moving and go pretty well. It would go around the track for maybe 100ft. and then it would just cut off. I tried not taking my foot off the gas, but that still didn't work(only caused me to spin out around the corner lol). So we took it inside and put it on jack stands. We took off the carb, cleaned both jets, and sprayed the whole thing with carb clean. We put the carb back on but still died. We can get it to "idle" but it is at a really high RPM. When we try to adjust the idle screw it either revs up more or dies. The previous class and teacher, choked the engine to kill it. So when we took out the plugs they were dark, or rich. We replaced them and the engine still died. NOTE: there was a centrifugal clutch on the car, but it was rusted together so we ended up taking it off. My classmates and I were thinking that the engine doesn't have enough suction, for the fuel pump, at low RPMs.     Model: 303777    /    Type: 1162-E1        /    Code: 03011511

Sled Dog Racing in the Olympics?!

So, I was doing some research on the Iditarod, and came across an article mentioning that sled dog races were demonstrated in the 1932 Winter Olympics. I came across this (Skip to Page 251), and it supports it! So, why isn't Sled Dog racing in the winter Olympics? I could stand to get rid of Ice Dancing for Sled Dog Racing, anyone else agree?  Also, I'm reading Call of the Wild, and it's a fantastic book.

Communication system for Race Car

I am part of a low-budget auto racing team that competes in a series called ChumpCar.  We recently bought some two-way radios and are looking to get the car wired for them and also the helmets wired. I have been looking at a number of racing supply web sites for the parts and am astonished at some of the prices. I am wondering if there is money to be saved by making these ourselves?  And, if so, where should I start? Can a photo finish image produce a false result in a race or other circumstance?

Whether a 100m dash, a cycling race, or boats, cars or motorcycles going in excess of 200mph many times these close finishes are determined by high speed photo finish cameras or even less accurate low speed digital video. My question relates primarily to alignment of the camera in relation to the finish line but also other variable such as the surface of the finish line which could be either crowned or banked. Racers crossing over the line a few mm above another just because they are on either side of the centerline of the racing surface. Water finishes produce even more variables. Using a simple bike race where bunch sprint finishes are common with speeds approaching 40+mph I would place a bank of 9 (or 3) cameras on opposite sides of the finish line. Each camera should in theory produce a slightly different image of the finish with variable determinations of outcomes and results based on the resulting images. How would a judge or anyone determine the "correct" image and true result having only the digital picture? Second - of the photo finish images I have seen it seems the finish line is rather subjective? Is the actual finish on or more frames before or after the determined finish? If photo finish and photos in general admissable in court (myth???) how often is the perpective of the camera being judged considered? i.e. Someone who is significantly off the perpendicular snaps a photo producing an image that is quite different from another person's who is at a different angle in relation to the finish. Thank you!

Escape from Berkeley (by any non-petroleum means necessary)

Now that Convert your Honda Accord to run on trash has won the Craftsman Workshop of the Future Contest, it's prepped to race to Mexico for a chance of winning $10,000.00!Our friends at The Shipyard and ALL Power Labs are running Escape from Berkeley (by any non-petroleum means necessary), the premier alternative-fuels road rally, for the second year in a row. Last year they escaped from Berkeley and fled to Vegas; this year they're running for the boarder. The directions are laid out for you, all you need to do is get to work. Will you be there? If so, be sure to document your alternative fuel project on Instructables!A road race to Mexico, no fuel allowed.June 12-16, 2009Berkeley, CA - "Escape from Berkeley (by any non petroleum means necessary)" is a road rally of alternatively powered vehicles from Berkeley, California to the US-Mexican Border. Part engineering problem, part artistic opportunity, the rally challenges contestants to start their "engines" on something other than petroleum based fuel, and by any means necessary, cause their "vehicles" show up at the border five days later - using only fuels/power/motive force scavenged for free along the route.Last years inaugural race took us from the DIY oasis of ALL Power Labs in Berkeley, CA, to the consumptive excess of Las Vegas, Nevada. Returning to compete for the second running of the race will be 1st Place Rally Winner Jack McCornack from Cave Junction, OR and Runner Up Wayne Keith from Springfield, AL. Registration for new racers is now open. Interested racers should write jim@allpowerlabs.org.All types of vehicles are welcome. All schemes for non-petroleum based transport are encouraged. In short, everything is permitted - just as long as your "fuel" is from a non-petroleum based source, your acquisition of it does not require money, and you start the race with no more than 10kwh of it on board. The full field of power generation and conversion is open for scavenging and creative power hacking.DARPA had a Grand Challenge. . . the rednecks a Cannonball Run. . . and the Auto X prize is still a year away. So in the meatime, NASA scientists and junkyard fabricators will go head-to-head in a no holds barred battle of engineering prowess and creative excess. Hanging somewhat in the balance are bragging rights for saving the world. That, and a grand prize of $10,000.Schedule:June 12th - Race begins at ALL Power Labs in Berkeley, CA. End and overnight in Parkfield, California, the Earthquake capital of the world.June 13th - 2nd leg start at Parkfield. End and overnight at El Mirage dry lake.June 14th - Day off at El Mirage dry lake for landspeed trials. Some EFB racers to run speed trials.June 15th - 3rd leg start at El Mirage. End at Salton Sea, California State Recreation Area.June 16th - 4th leg start at Salton Sea. End at the beach where the fence goes into the ocean at the Border Fields State Park, US Mexico Border."Some entries will arrive at the start line with extreme technical innovation. Others will arrive with only creative excess. The best entries, as well as the likely winners, will need to arrive with both." - Jim MasonNew York Times article on last year's race.

My Belt Sander Can Beat Your Circular Saw

Has your hobby become mainstream when it's covered by the New York Times? Power Tool Drag Racing gets coverage in My Belt Sander Can Beat Your Circular Saw:TEN feet short of the finish line, Barbie Airplane was stranded.A screaming speedster powered by a whirling circular saw flew from a wooden ramp at the recent Power Tool Drag Racing competition in Seattle. The cheerful contraption -- a Craftsman belt sander crowned with a powder-blue toy plane -- had been careening down the 75-foot racetrack moments earlier. Then the sander's rotating belt came undone, stopping it dead.In the neighboring lane, Heavy Metal Waste, a circular saw souped up with skateboard wheels and flaming antennas, had already rocketed past. Cheers of victory rang from the bleachers.along with a nod to our very own Power Tool Racer Instructable:If this kind of tinkering sounds tricky, there's no need to re-invent the wheel, or the saw blade, for that matter. A detailed tutorial at Instructables.com gives step-by-step directions for converting a circular saw into a racer, courtesy of Jeremy Franklin-Ross, co-founder of the Hazard Factory artists' collective in Seattle.More news and press about Instructables here.

Slot car racing - controlling the cars wirelessly

Guys, I and my two boys have a Tomy AFX slot car racing system that we set up and play. We have a load of track so we can set up a long, winding track. The downside though, is that as the speed controllers are connected by a wire, when one of the cars comes off, you have to go over to put it back on the track and one of two things happen; 1) you have to drop the controller, go over to the point where the car comes off, then run back (Me) or 2) run over to where the car has come off, forgetting that the controler is still connected to the track and pull the track apart (the boys) If there was a way of making the controllers wireless, it would be brilliant. It would mean you could stand where you want and not have to waste as much time when recovering your car. As i see it, I would need four independent transmitters, of one channel each. That's about the limit of my knowledge of the wireless bit! The cars get about 22 volts, although clearly the current is not massive. The current controllers are basically a rheastat with a trigger connected to the wiper that contacts the coiled resistive wire. Any of you clever guys out there know of a relativeley cheap and simple way of making this wireless?

I have a question about a project for school with a arduino uno. I have one arduino uno and 4 servo motors and 2 LCD displays, and some jumpwires (male and female) What i want to create is a race course made out of wood and i want to use the motors as levers. You can play this game with 2 players and the purpose of the whole game is to reach the finish earlier than your apponent. To this game i want to add educational quistions with yes or no as a answer. When a guestion is answered right the levers should open. If you answer a question wrong the levers should stay closed. I also want to make sure that if the player reaches the finish some LED lights blink. Is there a quiz program that i can use or could you help me make my own quiz program ? could you help me.
