Golf carts for racing

Hi, I'm new to this group but not to working on golf carts. I have been working on carts now for 15 years and I just started another venture in drag racing them. This is a lot of fun and hard work though but I really like the people in which I race around. If you are in SC area this May 2011 come join us for a weekend of racing and showing off your cart in Pageland SC. If anyone has questions about there cart feel free to ask!

Racing Game Physics

I've been designing a physics engine for a racing game for a long time now (months? years?) and I think that I've finally got almost everything figured out. The one thing that I don't know about is traction. So far my best guess for a formula is T = X + (Y * S)Where T is the stabilizing force on the car, S is the amount of slippage, and X and Y are two of the car's stats (probably measured in G's). This formula would be applied to each tire separately to account for the suspension.NOTE: The thing that might not be obvious here is that the car doesn't slip at all as long as X isn't exceeded. What do you think of this?

100m race clock

I was just wondering I anyone has ever seen a rig that you could use at home, during exercise, to do precise measurement of the time it takes to run 100m (eg.)? It's a little awkward to do with a stop watch in your hand and there is lots of room for error. You would need a beep to tell you that time has started, and some way to stop the time once you have reached the desired distance. thanks Alan

Sled Dog Racing in the Olympics?!

So, I was doing some research on the Iditarod, and came across an article mentioning that sled dog races were demonstrated in the 1932 Winter Olympics. I came across this (Skip to Page 251), and it supports it! So, why isn't Sled Dog racing in the winter Olympics? I could stand to get rid of Ice Dancing for Sled Dog Racing, anyone else agree? Also, I'm reading Call of the Wild, and it's a fantastic book.

Communication system for Race Car

I am part of a low-budget auto racing team that competes in a series called ChumpCar. We recently bought some two-way radios and are looking to get the car wired for them and also the helmets wired. I have been looking at a number of racing supply web sites for the parts and am astonished at some of the prices. I am wondering if there is money to be saved by making these ourselves? And, if so, where should I start? Here are some of the parts: http://ped-products.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product;_id=31 http://ped-products.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product;_id=23 http://ped-products.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product;_id=46 Here is an article that shows how the mic kit is installed: http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/articles/wiring-helmet-radio/ Thanks in advance, Evan

The Great Egg Race Returns!

Brits of a certain age will remember The Great Egg Race - teams of ingenious chaps using the contents of a typical shed or kitchen to solve a problem of which they have no prior notice, kind of a cardigan-wearing precursor to Scrapheap Challenge (aka Junkyard Wars). At the same time, an international egg-mobile contest was going on; teams and individuals competing to make vehicles to carry a 70g egg as far as possible, powered only by a single, small elastic band. For American readers, it's a similar idea to a mouse-trap car. Well, it's back! Firstly, there's a digitised archive of shows from the Early eighties (the years when I was in secondary education!) available online here (sorry, I don't know if they are available to US viewers, but maybe you can find it YouTube?). In addition, Auntie Beeb is bringing it back, or at least, it's spirit, in the form of a new Wallace and Gromit show, with animated inventions, instructions for making your own gadgets (some familiar to us here, like a vibrobot, others more unusual, like a Magnus-effect car (I'm really curious about that one!). Keep an eye on this show, folks, and on the hands-on page - it could be a great source of inspiration for new Makers, and your own Instructables.

Wanted: A contraption to punch two parallel holes in a pumpkin (see pictures)

I really could use some help with this project. I live in Williams Bay, Wisconsin and the Williams Bay Recreation Department and the Williams Bay Business Association hold a pumpkin race around Halloween. The pumpkins have to have two parallel axles, four wheels. I attached some pictures of what we have been using, but frankly it doesn't work. The contraption we have is a piece of wood, 4x4, with two holes drilled into it. We have two long screwdrivers that go through the holes. Pumpkin pushed up against the wood and the scewdrivers shoved through. We also took off the handle of a scewdriver and inserted it into a drill and that seems to work great. However, the holes were never small enough and the screwdriver can move around inside, which defeats the whole purpose. Also there are only two holes and that limites the size of pumpkin that can be used. I like the basic idea of this Pumpkin Punch. We just didn't have the right tools or know-how to do it right. The axles have to be parallel or the pumpkin will not go straight. We, the Rec Department, use 5/16 threaded rod and six inch rubber wheels. The morning of the race, volunteers help attach the wheels and axles for the children, which is why we need this contraption. I would also like an Instructable made on how to build a pumpkin racer so that the Rec Department can direct people to it for questions. Check out www.wbhalloween.com for some more information on our event. I hope there is someone that can help. The next Pumpkin Race is set for October 30, 2010. Thanks

Tyre table

Hello I have an idea surrounding a racing car tyre which i was given for nothing, as a racing car fan i though this was brilliant. However after the novelty was worn off i came to the conclusion that i have nothing to do with it. I have came up with a use after about a year of it sitting at my parents house, i want to create a table based within this tire, the most basic thing i am wishing for this is a circle of glass to act as a table top, however this idea has developed and i would like to have this top removable if possible where there is another plate of glass on which i could put things, the final evolution would be for this table to light up also, preferable with its own power supply but if this is not possible then mains powered would be no problem. another option i was thingin is if the top of the table was able to be pushed down to turn off/on the light. If anyone has any suggestions of materials and/or components that i could use this would be a great help as i am stuck at the moment. I am unaware of even the typer of glass to use! LOL Many Thanks in advance for any help i receive Matt

Calculate and Display Reaction Time/Elapsed Time

I got my son an Auto World Pro Racing Dragstrip for Christmas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3SNzDs_NJI Great fun out of the box with the starting tree that alerts false starts and identifies the winner at the end of the track. It does this with electric eyes in the track for each lane that see when a car passes over it. Like I said, great fun, but we would like to see 1) the driver's reaction time - the time it takes from the time the light turns green to the time the car moves across the eye at the start - and 2) the elapsed time - the time the car moves across the eye at the start to the time the car crosses the finish. Ideally, this would be displayed for each lane until reset. Total elapsed time and MPH are typically displayed in real life... http://atthedragstrip.com/dragstrip101 I believe this can be accomplished using the existing components in the Auto World kit and an Arduino. The following instructables could prove useful... https://www.instructables.com/id/Arduino-Controlled-Finish-Line/?ALLSTEPS https://www.instructables.com/id/After-Dinner-Reaction-Time-Tester/?ALLSTEPS https://www.instructables.com/id/Reaction-Timer/?ALLSTEPS I am open to all... better ideas, off the shelf solutions, delivered product, or help developing solution. This is something I think I could do with step by step instruction but not something I would attempt on my own. I know just enough to get me in trouble.

Drag racing "christmas tree" lite sequencer circuit?

A drag racing "Christmas Tree" flashes six (6) lites in sequence to initiate a race. The rate should be adjustable and no programable eproms please. The lites should flash "on" then "off" only once with a reset switch to start again. Just a plain simple adjustable timer circuit that a middle school student could understand and use.

Slot car racing - controlling the cars wirelessly

Guys, I and my two boys have a Tomy AFX slot car racing system that we set up and play. We have a load of track so we can set up a long, winding track. The downside though, is that as the speed controllers are connected by a wire, when one of the cars comes off, you have to go over to put it back on the track and one of two things happen; 1) you have to drop the controller, go over to the point where the car comes off, then run back (Me) or 2) run over to where the car has come off, forgetting that the controler is still connected to the track and pull the track apart (the boys) If there was a way of making the controllers wireless, it would be brilliant. It would mean you could stand where you want and not have to waste as much time when recovering your car. As i see it, I would need four independent transmitters, of one channel each. That's about the limit of my knowledge of the wireless bit! The cars get about 22 volts, although clearly the current is not massive. The current controllers are basically a rheastat with a trigger connected to the wiper that contacts the coiled resistive wire. Any of you clever guys out there know of a relativeley cheap and simple way of making this wireless?

PC USB steering wheel 180 degrees 1080?

I've got a GEMBIRD STR-SHOCKFORCE-M Multi Interface steering wheel which I bought new about a month ago. It is pretty much "you get what you pay for" as far as it goes, and its not nearly as good (nor did I expect it to be) as, lets say a G27. Now, I have never used a G27 but I saw some videos, and it seems that it can do a full turn, while this one only does 90 degrees to each side - 180 in total. I'd like to modify it somehow so it can be rotated 1080 degrees like in a real car, or atleast somewhat more than 180. I found it useful in some racing games where turning needed to be quick and sharp, but in some simulation games it just jerked the ingame steering wheel like it were out of cardboard and ultimately I end up parked inside a wall or on top of a tree.(adjusting the steering wheel AND ingame sensitivity setting to lowest didn't help) If anyone needs pictures I'll post them later today.

Getting sponsors for a Monster Lawn Mower

I am thinking of building a "monster lawn mower" for exhibition use, (parades, local monster truck shows, fairs, etc.) However, I am a high school student, and don't have the cash to do this. I was thinking about getting it sponsored by lawn mower companies, tire companies, websites, or even private investors. Has anyone ever tried building a similar vehicle, or getting a large project sponsored? Let me know your experiences. I am willing to take any help I can get.
